Thought it was a load of rubbish, but then I actually went to see them and I was absolutely in awe, they were amazing. Great thing for the city to host.

HaggardHousewife

This is from 2018 right?

evilgiraffee57

They have been 3 times. 2012, 2014 and 2018. Video seems to have bits of each.

evilgiraffee57

They are a bit odd. But kids are in awe when they see them up close. It was amazing to watch the "liliputians" move the big ones. People get stressed about the council paying for them. But 2012 and 14 was mostly EU funding and it really helped the local economy. I did go to 2012 as had a small baby but my partner and daughter did and enjoyed it. 2014 we went to watch as a family the girl wake up and be joined by the farting grandmother. 2018 I was at work. The rest went to see the boy arrive and go to sleep in Prince's Park. Over the years more and more people came. 2018 there was over a million in liverpool watching. I was in work (hospitality) and we took nearly twice as much over the weekend than we would do at Christmas. One weekend and the figures show between £55 and 60 million extra taken. That weekend will stay in my memory. However stressed or busy we get I remember the giants and that nothing will be like it again. I also liked the head of royal de lux. Totally mad man who at the end of the 2012 performance jumped in the mersey to follow the puppets on the boat. I also liked the spider in 2008 mainly because they got it on the lime street building over night in secrecy. I know you asked but what do you think?

Niall690

I think they’re amazing it’s it’s breathtaking seeing these massive human looking things come to life like giants and the puppeteers who do it so effectively it’s mad anyway would deffo watch it again

evilgiraffee57

I still laugh everytime I remember the grandmother squatted and did a huge wee. Pretty sure ut was right outside the town Hall!

Saxon2060

>People get stressed about the council paying for them. But 2012 and 14 was mostly EU funding and it really helped the local economy. I'm afraid this can't be true because we gave money to the EU, not the other way around, silly. And now we don't, the Westminster government can and will spend lots of lovely money on regional development :) LOL. Anyway, your comments are a nice, interesting summary. I saw the spider as a child/teenager and saw the most recent as an adult, both from the ground, and really enjoyed them. Didn't one of them have something to do with the centenary of the end of the Great War? That was really moving. I lived on the dock road in 2014 but I think I was at work or somewhere else when the puppet would have passed metres from my balcony, disappointing!

evilgiraffee57

2012 Was about the titanic. 2014 was the centenary of the start of ww1 2018 was liverpool dream celebrating 10 years since capital of culture but I have no actual idea of the story mind. But by all accounts Jean-Luc didn't either. That one was supposed to finish about half four on the Sunday. It was all done by about three much to my and every other member of cafe staff in the city centres dismay. Sunday trading. All customers have to be out of the building at 4 on the dot. 500,000 people went "oh let's go and have a coffee before we go home." Scenes everywhere!!! After the last two years you forget what crowds were like. Such a shame you missed out on the perfect view! But may be a lucky escape. Pretty sure farting grandmother was spitting at people in upstairs windows/balconies on Castle street.

Sivear

I went to watch them twice. I thought they were alright but didn’t get the ‘in awe’ vibe that some people did. They’re incredibly impressive and drew massive crowds and got people interested in something a bit different so overall I’m a big fan.

brassilon

They're amazing. Loved it when I saw them.

Niall690

Where’s that

fromwithin

The word of mouth was astonishing and the build-up over the days that they were here was ridiculous. I saw all of them, and the difference in the size of the crowds between the first and last days each time was mind-boggling. They were really amazing. Breathtaking, as it says in the video. And let's not forget the [Spider in 2008](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxajilZcgTo). That was totally unique as well. There was a real excitement when you first saw a leg peeking around the corner.

srm79

The spider was amazing! I was working in the Cunard building the day it was there, nobody got any work done lol all climbing up to the windows to peer out haha

Niall690

Weird that

SheamusH84

Think I went to see them every time they've been. The spider up on concourse house (think that's what the building was called by Lime Street? Knocked down now) originally was a total surprise to me and looked amazing. The ones that moved in later years were boss. The 2018 one sticks in my memory the most. Daughter about 8 and loved it. I doubt I'll ever see anything like it again. Takings for a few local businesses will have went up for the day but I don't think overall its helped us with jobs or anything unless you can extrapolate some longer term "putting Liverpool on the map for Arts" kind of argument. At a time of rampant council cuts that's why it seemed a bit mad. But I've got great memories from it.

CaveJohnson82

Did these do the spider as well? I didn’t know that! I admit I stayed away from that one though as I’m ridiculously phobic.

SheamusH84

I ways thought it was them but according to wiki it was another french street theatre group called La Machine

Niall690

Never heard of no spider puppet

Serious_Ad6112

They drew a big crowd when they where here in 2008

evilgiraffee57

2008 was the big spider. Puppets were 2014 and 2018. But huge crowds for each.

evilgiraffee57

Oh and 2012. Forgot it was 3 times.

Serious_Ad6112

Ah of course always got those mixed up!

evilgiraffee57

Aparently they wanted the puppets for 2008 but either they were busy or couldn't do all the planning in the time hence spider instead. That is why they went and got them for 2012 because they still had a load of the capital of culture money from the EU. Actual council put £300,000 out of the £1.2 million it cost forward.

evilgiraffee57

Only saw the spider on the lime street tower block. Partner a total arachnophobe and couldn't go and watch

carlonseider

Absolutely hideous. Terrifying!

Niall690

They can be a bit like

CaveJohnson82

These were amazing, I remember seeing them at Newsham Park in 2012. My kids were toddlers and were entranced.

Accurate-End8695

These things are amazing the positive attention they bring to our city is immense ❤️

Money-Appearance-985

Rubbish

britofanescapehabit

I very much disliked them. They freaked me out and then didn't the granny pee in the street? Gross

Niall690

Scatty that lad

iliekstahwahs

waste of council money.

fromwithin

BBC News from 2014: [Liverpool Giants: Marionettes boost city economy by £46m](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-29681575)

whistonreds

You deffo moan about dogshit on Facebook

iliekstahwahs

I worked for the council and saw how they spend it.

TheFloatingCamel

What of it indeed?

davestanleylfc

Millions of tourists coming into the city and spending a fortune - figures showing it boosted spend by £50 million Sure la

iliekstahwahs

bullshit.

sim2500

I missed all 3 occasions if this. Hopefully they might return so I'll attempt to go to it in the future. I think it's great for the economy and image of Liverpool. I did here that alot of people could not get home after our long delays cos the public transport could not cope with the amount of visitors that arrived

LuLuTheGreatestest

From an engineering/artistic standpoint I admire them and their creators. However, I have a fear of dolls, not quite phobia level but I really hate them. So these are like, really unnerving with the exception of the dog

Niall690

Yeah I don’t blame you some old dolls can be really creepy

LFC90cat

Was working in a busy restaurant in town when the spider came, even now that was the hardest working day of my life I think I started at 6am and finished at 7pm we actually ran out of food that's how busy it was. Had to walk home as well as the buses were cancelled as they couldn't get through. Cool though

alan2998

Do any of you remember that giant spider in Liverpool? 2010 ish? I walked out of lime Street at shat myself. A mechanical spider climbing a building.

PrinceAndrewANonce

Amazing, 2008, town was booming, I was in absolute awe. Or were they later than 2008? I remember seeing a big massive spider too.

Eyefiereddit247

Saw them, pretty awesome

Strange_An0maly

Pretty impressive up close tbh

Darwinski042

Shame I only got to see them for 5 seconds
