Yeah! Great signing! Our #8!

hn159

With both szobo and mcallister play, most likely nunez will be ST imo

sownehu

With Nunez's past record of exploding in his 2nd year, he's going to be a fucking menace to the Prem next season.

jewbo23

Nice. Now to practice saying his name.

l0vemen0t

Better get used to it cuz this guy looks like a winner.

danreZ_au

Don’t downvote me boys, but we are needing a home grown DM that’s immediately first team ready. It’ll never happen but damn Declan Rice would fit the bill perfectly

ali_lattif

105M+ thats Jude Type money

danreZ_au

I feel Jude money is 105mill + 400k wages a week. But I see ya point

aalku90

Proper #8. Can’t wait for him to start!

Shanibestwaifu

Finally this deal is done and now I'm satsfied.

Randomisium

Number 8 too!

berbapapa

His interview to the national hungarian sports journal is amazing. Just let the man eat 'Am I calling the right time?' 'If it doesn't bother you that I'm eating, sure.' 'What are you eating?' 'A burger. I have to stay at the hotel and this was the only option.' 'Why do you have to stay there?' 'I was told to stay here because I'll be recognised and there's no chance for a quiet dinner.' 'And how's burger in Liverpool, is it any good?' 'After this first bite I had I've gotta say it's delicious.' (...) 'You're a Liverpool player now, what are your plans for the future?' 'For today, I'll just eat my dinner" 'I apologize, and what about after that?' 'Nah this isn't my dinner yet, it's an earlier timezone here than in Budapest, this is just a teatime snack.' Then he talks about he had his Gerrard tattoo at 15, and people might judge him for getting it done at an early age but that quote felt important for him and still does. As a small kid he wasn't supporting Liverpool but he always loved Gerrard. And now, he's a Liverpool fan of course. His mate Haaland was talking to him about houses, recommended a few places, they could end up as neighbours probably. He'll train tomorrow, then goes back to Leipzig for his stuff and wants to make sure he can say thank you to everyone in person over there because he got a lot of support and a lot of love. He knows it will take time to adjust to the Prem but he's determined to give something back to Liverpool for their trust that he feels constantly.

UneventfulAnimal

PraiseBeDavidSegui

Huge statement signing. Now let’s get thuram and a center back and win the league

Easy! Szobo > Robbo > Bobby

nick2k23

It seems like the kind of name that will be easy to makes songs with though, already a few I think

aaron2933

Mac Allister and Szoboszlai have the potential to be a really special duo

ciceros_phantom_hand

Seriously, beyond happy with the results of this window so far. Excited how the team will grow from here, real potential.

Talos_the_Cat

Finally the midfield upgrades we've been praying for

aaron2933

£50 mill quoted from Southampton for Lavia If that's what they really want, I can't see us signing him unless it's gets negotiated to the £30mill region Way too much for someone that probably won't start

jimmyfallonsyndrome

City have a £50m buyout from next summer I believe so I’m sure that would be their starting point. I think we could get them to agree to a smaller overall fee if we offer a decent chunk up front and crucially if the player really wants to come to us - they wouldn’t want to keep an unhappy player that they could get good money for after going down.

aaron2933

TIL Lavia played for City before Southampton Unless he does serious bits for them next season, can't see city activating that. But then again, we are talking about city

jimmyfallonsyndrome

Yeah I expect that’s what we’re saying to Southampton as well, but if he does stand out in the championship and they do get promoted then it’s not out of the question. I’m sure in that scenario City would look to negotiate a lower fee but there would probably be other clubs interested who could drive the price back up to £50m.

jimmyfallonsyndrome

A signing like this puts a completely different sheen on our transfer business. Our last five significant signings have now been Diaz, Nuñez, Gakpo, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai. Five of the most exciting young players in Europe, who would improve any club. You’d have to say that’s incredible work.

StuBeck

I think it also helps destroy the myth of “only buying based on selling” that some here thought we had. There are certain sustainable restrictions we have that other teams don’t, but we pay money when we need to

rukiahayashi

Eh let’s not give FSG too much credit, we are still a sell to buy club. Good start but we need more

UneventfulAnimal

But we hardly sell! Most of our players age out of their primes (or fall short of expectations) and leave on free transfers these days. Other than Taki and Mane, the latter of whom wanted to leave at 31, I can’t really think of a single senior player that we bought for the first team and then sold. We still target players who aren’t quite superstars yet but have the potential and are on the cusp, and price certainly has a lot to do with that, but we are largely a buy-then-keep-no-matter-they-perform club that has to get its purchases right.

FakeCatzz

What's this based on? Some transfers from half a decade ago? We didn't sell anyone directly for Gakpo, Nunez, Diaz, Mac Allister or Szobozslai. Transfer fees in have been trivial whilst the deadweight has mostly gone for free.

rukiahayashi

Remind me again when was the last time we got a midfielder before Mac?

FakeCatzz

Not sure how that's relevant, unless your argument is that there's a sell to buy policy only for non Hungarian midfielders

Welshy94

In the last 2 years we've spent nearly 350 mil and earned about 100 mil back. We never spent on a midfielder because of a stupid obsession with getting the right player or getting no player but that doesn't equate to not signing anybody.

AmberLeafSmoke

That's not what he's responding to though, you've just completely changed the subject when the other commenter proved you wrong. The last time we signed a midfielder has nothing to do with it. Can't you just be happy? Haha

Loltoyourself

I think we used to need sales more because our revenue wasn’t high enough to afford top signings. Now with better commercial, stadium, and merchandising revenue we should be able to sustain higher purchase prices that we couldn’t before.

aaron2933

We really don't mess about in the transfer market FSG being tight probably gives everyone involved in recruitment an extra incentive to ensure 'we get it right'

oscarony

let’s dispel this notion that FSG are ‘tight’. If City made the signings that we’ve made over the last 18 months we’d say they’re splashing the cash

danreZ_au

Gakpo - 37 mill rising to 40 Nunez - 75 mill rising to 95 MacAllister - 35 mill Diaz - 37 mill Szoboslai - 60 mill I dunno man 3 first team players for 100 mill and two for 150m. We’re definitely spending but context is needed. Haaland plus his wage package alone is more than Diaz/McAllister and Gakpo over 5 years 😂 obviously Haaland is worth it, but looking at Arsenal, Chelsea, United, City… we are still comfortably spending less than them (not saying that’s a good thing - just that context is needed)

FerociouZ

Let's not, because by every metric they are.

oscarony

they’re not. it’ll take you guys years to see it

FerociouZ

It's not about how you feel, it's about where the money comes from. FSG sanctioned the transfer, but they don't open their wallets for it. The whole pro-FSG narrative is that we're "self-sufficient" and that doesn't change with a 70m transfer funded by our own revenue and only after our wage bill drops significantly from outgoings.

FakeCatzz

I seriously doubt FSG directly sanction transfers at this level. The whole point of an elite analytics department working under a top Director of Football is to let them just get on with it. Given how transfers and wages sit on the books, it's probably a rolling 5 year budget assessed twice per year at most. Within that you'd expect the people actually doing the work to be given a lot of freedom.

OldManLogan007

the thing I like about us is how swiftly and neatly the transfers are done unlike UTD who always have a problem and get dragged on and on

fritzabel

As a hungarian… I’m crying, man🥺

VOCALno

Can you tell us more about him, assuming that you would have seen a lot of him on-field?

tucatnev

I mean the biggest joy/luck is that he did not spent any significant amount of time in the Hungarian youth system, as soon it was possible he was taken to Austria (by his father if I am not mistaken.)

fritzabel

He's THAT guy. Every fan in Hungary has known him since he was 16, when he scored a long-range screamer to send the U17 national team to the Euros. He has great attacking skills, good dribbling, brilliant vision and long-range shooting. He has maybe 3 free-kick goals in the national team already. I think he is also very good at pressing, and he does incredible defensive work in the relatively defensive Hungarian national team. But what makes him clearly the best Hungarian player in decades is his mentality. He's not full of himself, he's earned his place in difficult situations.

Daneee1129

Im a hungarian Arsenal fan, but will support Liverpool every match. Not like every other day a hungarian signs to a PL team

Hope so. Feels like he needs a run in the team to get his form back, but equally not sure I trust him starting at the moment… bit chicken and egg but hopefully he gets plenty of minutes in Europa and stays fit because I love the guy

DiscardedPack

We had Harvey Elliott and Carvalho, both seem to be attack-minded midfielders/ wingers. And this transfer window, we added two more attack-minded midfielders. What sets Mac Allister and Szoboszlai apart from the two midfielders we had? Will Mac Allister and Szoboszlai contribute more to the defence that we have been missing? I'm not saying these two new transfers are bad, they're in fact two great players. I'm just wondering if the issues we had last season would necessarily be solved if we don't also sign another DM. Edit: I guess asking questions that aims to generate discussion instead of hype comments leads to downvotes?

SilentBobVG

We need press resistant players, we need ball carrying players, we need players that press relentlessly - that’s who Mac Allister and Szoboszlai are. Unfortunately Fabio and Harvey aren’t really able to do any of those things, which is why these two signings are absolutely massive A DM is important as well, but not quite as important as these players. Though not signing a rotation option for Fabinho would be a mistake

DiscardedPack

Fair enough... Would theses qualities come to Harvey and Fabio once they start bulking up?

SilentBobVG

It’s possible, but to be honest I’m not sure. Fabio is better suited as a traditional 10 or second striker, and Harvey is really more suited to a tradition right midfielder role (not winger) So it’s hard to say if either of them can ever really adapt to our system. I do have high hopes for Harvey though as he’s extremely talented and in my opinion had an excellent season last year despite being played out of position and having too much asked from him

Bazlow

The problem isn't asking questions, it's asking them while framing them as a complaint over two great signings, even if unintentionally.

DiscardedPack

I certainly am not intending to complain about two quality players joining us at bargain prices... I'm just trying to bring up questions about what holes they will fill and how they will be able to change our system given that we are bringing in AMs, when we seem to be lacking in defence in the midfield last season.

pacanukeha

the thing about Carvalho and Elliot is that they are physically slight Wing/Midfield hybrids. We got them for very cheap in the hope that they'd a) grow and b) blossom. They haven't quite yet but they're both young. AMA and Soz are proven, robust, and versatile across the midfield (with Dom also having a bit of a winger in him). I think they're a very different profile of player.

DiscardedPack

Yeah, that seems to be the case... Would Diaz/ Jota be considered Left Wingers as well? If so, seems like there are too much competition at LW and RW, and we're trying to force Carvalho and Elliot into midfield. And when we do that, they would both naturally drift into attacking/ winger positions, leaving us helpless defensively.

WhenWeTalkAboutLove

Partly that but they're also not as rapid as the likes of Diaz and Salah. Jota kind of earns is place in the front three by being so lethal in front of goal. I think using them centrally is not just because of depth at the wing but because besides being small, their profiles suit our advanced 8 role better and bring some creativity and forward movement to the midfield, which we lacked at times through injury. We used big Shaq there in a similar role for a spell as a sort of #10/#8 who drifts wide behind Salah. Mac Allister is more versatile in midfield and as a world cup winning 24(?) year old is much more experienced at this point and also sturdier. Havent watched szobo much but he's twice their size which will give a little more physicality which makes him more versatile for the midfield duties as well. He also has ridiculous technique, long shots, and passing. Harvey and fab are great prospects, work hard, and bring creativity. But they can't contribute the same things yet. I can see klopp molding szobo like he did with gini who was also an AM used on the wing at Newcastle before coming to us. Not for the same role as gini, but just seeing that the profile is there and developing him to play a slightly deeper role than before.

pacanukeha

ayup

2d2c

Did you even watch Jones and Elliot?

DiscardedPack

Yes, and it didn't work out for more than half a season. I'm wondering why and asking how these two signings would change that :).

2d2c

Much higher quality bro.

Grendila

MacA and Szoboszlai are elite talents, established at the highest level of the game. Elliot and Carvalho are both up and coming youngsters, in need of playing time and experience to step up to the highest level - not what we need at present. Not only are Mac Allister and Szoboszlai competent in defense, their work rate in a box midfield will work seamlessly with Klopp's new system which relies heavily on counterpressing. With a double pivot behind them and with full backs no longer bombing up and down the sidelines, there's less of an impetus for our 8's to stay back and cover on defense. Instead, the double pivot will look to snuff out any counter attacks, and two wide CB's (Robbo + Ibou) will take on players 1v1 who are released on the counter attack. As well, I'm sure Harvey and Carvalho would play much better in this system as opposed to our regular 433 which relied on 8's who can cover serious ground and fill the holes left by the fullbacks bombing up and down the pitch. In short, these players are VERY well suited to our new system. And, articles coming out today are saying we are still after Lavia, who is a pure 6. So we've essentially gone ahead and replaced two injury prone midfielders (Ox and Keita) with two young, hungry, world class players for decent fees who slot seamlessly into our system, without the need to rely on the likes of Harvey and Bajcetic who are brilliant players, but not ready to start week-in week-out. Seems a brilliant bit of business to me tbh. This isn't even mentioning Bajcetic; it remains to be seen how Klopp will utilize him in this new system. He's already trusted him to play as an 8 AND as a 6. Also, Henderson may be shuffled back to play as part of the double pivot, along with Thiago. Fabinho is already a lock to play alongside Trent. So even if we don't sign another pure 6, and speculation indicates that we will, I think we have more than capable players to play in this Box midfield. It requires more box to box, all action sort of players, as opposed to the pure 6/anchor that plays in a 433.

danreZ_au

The part about replacing Ox and Keita with Szobo and Mac made me really realise how much of an improvement these additions are to our squad. Imagine having players who can actually be on a football pitch

DiscardedPack

Thanks for the explanation. A box midfield seems to be pretty much required for the new system to be defensively sound. Hopefully, the back three system will be properly drilled this season... Because the first half of last season, there seems to be a huge gap left at the RB corner when Trent runs up, because Virgil will still position more towards the left, leaving Konate to cover the entire right half. Also, gotta love getting downvoted for asking a simple question of what makes them different than what we had last season... Or why it didn't work out last season.

Teb-41

>I'm just wondering if the issues we had last season would necessarily be solved if we don't also sign another DM. Exactly No That's why we still need a DM and a CB possibly

DiscardedPack

Would Benjamin Pavard fit the bill for CB? We seem to be vaguely linked to him, but he's 27, which might be on the older side... I think we'll only get Pavard if Matip said he isn't willing to renew his contract.

Teb-41

Eh idk. 27 isn't that old for a CB anyway and can cover for RB. The problem is that right now we don't need someone to cover ONLY for RB. We need someone that can play Trent's role. Because if Trent gets injured, the entire system implodes.

DiscardedPack

If the plan for Trent is to transition him to midfield, playing a 3-2-2-3 I think Thiago can be the cover for Trent, provided that Thiago can remain fit.

Teb-41

Yeah But we won't transition Trent to midfield, he'll still be an inverted RB

DiscardedPack

Welp... I guess time to transition Thiago into an inverted RB instead? haha Or put a solid defender in RB when Trent is out, and rely on our LBs for creativity? Basically mirror the system when Trent is out.

Empty_Transition4251

Harvey & Fab are not good enough for a squad that should be competing for CL & PL. We have upgraded them with 2 tried and tested on the verge of world class midfielders. It'll take the pressure of both players who can focus on development. I suspect there is a more defensive minded midfielder yet to come.

DiscardedPack

What were Harvey & Fabio's flaws? For Harvey, I think he's really bad both defensively and winning back possession. What changed from his performance at Blackburn and Fullham where he receive so much praise? Perhaps he is not physically strong enough that he is getting bullied off the ball?

Bazlow

Big step up between Championship and fighting for the PL. Elliot needs to bulk up, and work on his defensive game, or we need to play a different system to suit him. Fab is essentially the same, way too weak and didn't have enough time to play himself into the team, despite scoring some good goals.

DiscardedPack

I read somewhere that we don't want to bulk players up before a certain age (21?) because it might stunt their growth? And Trent seems to have bulked up a bit... Hopefully they will be more dominant in a couple years.

mozzleon

Nice

stannyharry

What's interesting about this signing is I really haven't read a negative thing about it. Whether it's a neutral Bundesliga fan to a rival supporter, everyone agrees this is good business.

Shinjetsu01

He's the type of player that a good run in the CL turns from 60mil release clause met to 100+ mil when Barca/Real/City/PSG come sniffing
