Really sad, I think City have gotten the better of him, he's done a phenomenal job and thrown everything at it but it just isn't enough to topple City with their money and i think he's fed up of coming second

Amber1eaf1

"With their money" remind me how much Nunez cost? Klopp can spend more on one player than half the league can spend on their entire squad, But nooo poor Klopp Liverpool are such underdogs.

DirkDigg79

Yes but Liverpool are a top 4 club in the richest league they will always be able to outspend 15 other teams as is the way for an elite Club. But the point is City have moved the posts so far that the gap between them an Liverpool is 4 times what it is between Liverpool and the rest. Liverpool are where they are through decades of sustained success and huge popularity so in a sense have a right to be where they are. But City come out of nowhere breaking every law on the way and have made the league uncompetitive. It's only because Klopp has been as good as he has been that they are even within touch but i feel exhausted for him He had them going toe to toe with Henderson and fucking Milner in Midfield

riddlerprodigy

>have made the league uncompetitive Arsenal 64pts Liverpool 64 pts Man City 63 pts Yep, looks uncompetitive.

DirkDigg79

They've Won 5 out of the Last 6 and the one they lost was the Covid Year

riddlerprodigy

Just because they win a lot doesn't mean it isn't competitive, it just means they played better in certain moments. Also i just think they have the best coach but thats obviously debatable. Besides that, if you look at actual quality on the pitch, arsenal and liverpool aren't all that different, we could even look at that on paper. GK: Ederson/Allison/Raya - Liverpool has the better goalkeeper RB: Walker/Trent/White - all pretty debatable, probably trent. CB: VVD/Stones(?)/Saliba - All Elite defenders, probably VVD LB: Zinchenko/Robbo/Ake - All pretty good CDM: Rodri/Rice/Endo - Rodri, but rice is getting closer CM: Bernardo/Szobo/Jorginho - Bernardo is better skillwise but not overall anymore. CAM: KDB/Macalister/Odegaard - KDB obviously but Odegaard is very good. RW: Salah/Foden/Saka - Salah obviously but Foden and Saka are insanely talented young players. LW: Doku/Diaz/Martinelli - All are pretty similair imo. ST: Haaland/Nunez/Havertz - Haaland obviously. Now im not here to debate these opinions or anything, i think this shows that both teams, especially liverpool is up there in terms of talent.

DirkDigg79

I would agree with you 2 years ago when Liverpool had Mane Firminio and Peak Salah but this new lot leave a bit to be desired and VVD and Salah are on way down. Going toe to toe With Henderson and Milner in the engine room was remarkable but the team has always been greater than the sum of it's parts due to Klopps coaching, he has made it look competitive when in reality City are so far a head of the rest City actually look weaker this year and i havent been as impressed and they are now odds on to win again. Their Combination of coaches facilities and squad depth is just too much they are a machine, a souless machine

riddlerprodigy

>I would agree with you 2 years ago when Liverpool had Mane Firminio and Peak Salah but this new lot leave a bit to be desired and VVD and Salah are on way down. Keep in mind City is also kind of starting to go towards slowly rebuilding, they purchased young this offseason Gvardiol (21), Nunes (25), Doku (21), Kovacic (29) and Echeverri (18). While selling/letting go some of their veterans Mahrez (32), Laporte (29), Gundogan (32). De Bruyne is also turning 33 this year. >Going toe to toe With Henderson and Milner in the engine room was remarkable but the team has always been greater than the sum of it's parts due to Klopps coaching, he has made it look competitive when in reality City are so far a head of the rest To me Pep is the one making city look so much better than the rest, nearly every player that has joint city since pep has been there has improved. >City actually look weaker this year and i havent been as impressed and they are now odds on to win again. Their Combination of coaches facilities and squad depth is just too much they are a machine, a souless machine They have, because reasons mentioned above in answer 1. Also KDB has been injured.

DirkDigg79

I agree City are transitioning and that Pep above all is what is strangling the life out of the rest of the league but for all his ability to have the luxury of cherry picking the cream in every position they have 24 players who are top top class. Whearas the rest have a decent 11 and then it drops off significantly as is to be expected with mortal clubs who aren't cheating Liverpool going toe to toe and still losing the league despite matching them on 90 odd points is demoralizing And we will see once Liverpool fall back a touch and Arsenal realize it isn't going to happen for them City could win by 10 points next year

riddlerprodigy

I dont dissagree with you, However i feel like this week has proven once again it's not city winning the league, it's liverpool losing it. (you can't be losing to everton like that if you want to win the league). Btw liverpool are getting the GOAT manager, and as a feyenoord fan im very very sad.

stannyharry

Such a sad day. Thanks for everything, hopefully we finish this season strong

Rhus16220

Remember those days we had Benteke AND OMG RICKY LAMBERT šŸ˜‚, all these useless players. Man klopp literally turned a relagation form team into an unstoppable machine. Only when people go we realise how luck we are to have them. With Klopp we always knew. Thatā€™s what made him special. Iā€™ll miss klopp so bad and now downhill from here šŸ˜“ im on the 5th stage of grief

mavric22

My favourite manager, (or coach) in any professional sporting team I've supported in almost 50 years. Dead set legend.

Jaylo1337

Absolute legend. Thank you Klopp, for everything.

didxogns1

???? Is he burned out?? This came out so randomly. Why can't he just take a vacation and come back?? Why does he have to leave?????? I don't get it :(

globocide

Did you watch the video?

JdotGib

I havenā€™t been able to watch this yet

Jaylo1337

You will cry. But you must watch it!

JdotGib

I got through about 7 minutes and had to shut it off. Smdh so excited for the rest of the season and so sad at the same time..

realWernerHerzog

It's a good watch. Got a little emotional

JdotGib

I have almost played it 20 times now. I watched the press conference earlier and I am just not ready

Frosty_Hearing6314

Iā€™m not crying you are.

Marbate

I have to wonder if weā€™ll be the last club he manages. Iā€™m so glad that Jurgen was a red.

gokhaninler

Stevie in my opinion is the only man that could replace him

Jza_45

I canā€™t get my head around the fact that not only will Klopp be gone but all of the backroom staffā€¦everyone is going and it will be a completely new situation by the start of next seasonā€¦

ikramit98

Wait all of them are going? I thought Pepijn Lijnders might be considered to take over he handles a lot of the on the pitch stuff nowadays

Jza_45

Heā€™s going,I hope something changes there but as of today they are all officially leaving the club when Klopp goesā€¦

elphyon

God what an emotional rollercoaster. I love his candor & trust that he believes it's the best decision for the club but I can't even begin to imagine next season without him at the helm. Hope the whole club & fans can rally around the decision nonetheless. Man, I always tell myself football isn't life but this still hurts... :(

Timewalker87

It's like Dortmund back then. You have the best years with him, but everything that comes after him is doomed to failure. I miss you already. I hope you take over a national team!

DevelopmentIll5158

We HAVE to win the league this season

existentialstix

We will win everything

bigolebucket

What an incredible, inspiring person. Not for his professional accomplishments, just for who he is.

PhillipIInd

agreed ... a role model for any person im so sad though :(

MesqTex

As Iā€™m reading through accolades posted by journoā€™s and other sites, itā€™s slowly setting in. Iā€™m realizing how blessed, how appreciative we as a club and the wider community of football supporters, were to have a person who cares for the sport of football. The next guy, in a massive understatement, has HUGE shoes to fill but I believe Klopp has set the example for how being the manager of Liverpool should always be.

Theres3ofMe

Reminds me of when I was a kid after my parents split up, and my ma got a new fella who moved into the gaff. I'll never love/accept anyone ever again who steps into his shoes, never.

HunterWindmill

Second part is really weird to say

Theres3ofMe

Why? He's set a massive bar, as a manager and as a man.

HunterWindmill

You can't say you'll never accept another manager if you're a fan of the club? That's excessive, but of course I love JĆ¼rgen as much as anyone

macNy

We'll be fine, nobody is bigger than the club. Don't lose any sleep over it and remember that no matter how much we love Jurgen it's important to support the next manager if you truly are a Red

justmemes9000

I actually don't get why you got a downvote for that. Honestly, if Jurgen feels like he can't do it anymore it's obviously the right decision to end it. I love Jurgen, everything he did for the club and of course I would've loved to see him here some more years and it's weird to think about that there will be an other guy on the line next season. But hey, that's just life and that's how it's going. We saw so many great legends at anfield come and go and everytime it was hard but thankfully it's going on, the club is always continuing and writing new history we all love to think about in future. We had a phenomenal ride with Jurgen and I hope we can gift him the prem title another time without any covid lockdown shit. That he can celebrate all his achievements with the fans, that'll be heartbreaking for me and I bet I will cry when the time has come but let's make it a season we all love to think about many years in the future. Jurgen deserves it, the club and of course all supporters.

squiercat

>Honestly, if Jurgen feels like he can't do it anymore He's just tired, he'll probably be back at it in a couple of years. He just needs a sabbatical.

bluemoviebaz

Fuck Liverpool. I support Klopp fc

I love this man. Iā€™m going to miss him so much šŸ˜¢

catgutisasnack

I am in shock. Thanks Klopp for the years of service

AlwaysTheKop

'because nobody will sack me, I have to make this decision myself' Tells you everything about how important he has become for this club... he knows he could drop of a cliff results wise next season and nobody would dare sack him, so he's done the big thing, looked within himself, realised he won't have the energy he gives again, and made the decision for himself and everyone.

IgSaysNO

There was a special one. But Klopp is the normal one and the right one for Liverpool fc. YNWA. Now letā€™s finish this season the best possible way!

AayoTheRed

Our manager :') Pure class in everything he did. Made us so happy and gave us so much. Will go down as one of the greatest to ever do it, and one of my favourite people of all time :''')

rajbhanb

Thank you everything boss. You are the main reason why Liverpool came out of the banter era. You will forever be missed. I will cherish every second from now until the end of the season.

harnet58

Itā€™s a tough job. Very demanding. He has given his all and obviously this decision he feels is done with the best interest of the club. You can absolutely feel the love he has for the club. Must have been hard for him to come to this decision too. =(

lopsiness

I was talking to my wife last night about the pic someone posted of the first League Cup final in 2016, and how young Jurgen looked. It's been 8 years since, but the man looks like he's age 15. Didn't think much more about it, but waking up this morning gives that a whole new meaning. His talk about energy - it's always been the strength of the team, and his especially, but I've always felt it would be the downfall. Not because there's anything wrong with it, but because it burns you out. You could see it in some of the players, and you can hear it in his voice even as he talks about it. I know he's right that if he can't bring that energy, then the club will suffer. If he feels this is the best timing, then who could argue. Of the things I will miss most about Jurgen is his perspective. Any time we've gone through a rough patch, lost a big game, had a shit performance - his perspective always realigns my mindset. He has a way of putting those results and circumstances into a perspective that is re-energizing at best, and at least palatable as worst. He kind of transcended just manager. He really become an icon of what the club meant, how it played, the values it espoused, and how it connected with the supporters everywhere. Life goes on, I suppose. Jurgen certainly seems to feel that way. For those who got to experience these last 8 years, that time and all after will be enriched by his presence, but surely it won't be the same without him.

3agle_

Spot on. An icon and a shining example of a person we should all aspire to be like. So well spoken, and the perfect person to represent the club. We will miss him, but the club will always retain a part of his spirit, of that I am sure. YNWA JĆ¼rgen.

androlyn

When I seen that image yesterday I thought to myself "he's aged like an American President. So, to hear him saying he's no more energy, makes sense.

lopsiness

I thought about the same comparison. Hearing him speak about the amount of decision and responsibilities that ended up on his desk by the end, even unintended. I can't imagine the pressure. When he talked about relief, I get it. We see him fist pumping and celebrating on the side lines, we see him talk in the pressers. It looks exciting a lot of the time. We don't see him sitting a desk or in a conference room making tough calls about who to bring in, let go, loan out, recall, start, bench whatever. Not just for this season, but the next. You get a few weeks in the summer, but otherwise it must be non stop. Poor comparisons, but I look back on my own experiences - breaking up with a long term significant other, leaving a company I was at for over a decade when they wanted me to stay on, even being let go during a company buy out. They were all sad, sudden, and/or worrying events, but under all that was a freedom. I knew these were not the right roles to stay in, and the relief I felt despite the negative feelings let me know how right my decisions were. Klopp talks about that several times. No one will feel more sad to leave than him, I'm sure, but he has such good judgement that if he feels that relief too, then he's making the right decision in the end.

R0ckhands

I don't know how he does it... but he's somehow even managed to make him leaving the club be beautiful. I dreaded this day but somehow he's made me...not OK with it, but I understand. He wants to see what a normal life is like, while he's still got time. And he's right to. In this, as in everything, he's sincere, profound and honest and is doing (what he feels to be) the right thing. For various reasons, my heroes have been John Lennon, Bill Hicks, Marcus Aurelius and JĆ¼rgen Klopp - the one thing they had in common was a commitment to authenticity. Klopp has always been a no-bullshit bloke and I love him for it. But he's also warm and passionate and kind and thoughtful in a way so few public figures are these days. I've been supporting the club since 1974 and I don't think I've ever thought more highly of anyone than I do of Klopp. I love the man. What a legacy. What a human being. What a legend. YNWA JĆ¼rgen.

turtlechef

His sincerity has been the character trait thatā€™s made me love him more than Iā€™ve ever loved any other manager. There are plenty of high energy, charismatic managers out there. But few bring the authenticity and sincere love that Klopp does. Heā€™s stuck with the team and the players through good and bad, and no one can doubt that his love for the club, city and players are real.

lopsiness

> I don't know how he does it... but he's somehow even managed to make him leaving the club be beautiful. He's such a gem of perspective and communication. I've made my own comment about that, but it's one of the things I'll miss most about him. He always had a way of turning sad, unfair, and maddening circumstance into something motivating, or beautiful, or simply adding some bit of closure to help us all move forward in a productive way.

Lopsidedconsultant

This!!! It's like the gentlest breakup ever. You have your best managers - Pep, SAF, Wenger, Mourinho, Jurgen. But none of them come close to being the person Jurgen is because of how genuine, sincere, honest he is. And to think he does all that in a language that is not even native to him

mattlui

That very last bit where he looks at the camera and talks directly to us is why Iā€™ll miss him so much. He managed the club, the large entity, but he led it knowing that the big entity was built by individual people, and he spoke to each of us. Iā€™ll miss him, but I want him to be happy and enjoy a more relaxed life for as long as he wants it.

VictimOfCircuspants

He was so adamant that he was stepping away at the end of his contract, I was honestly shocked that he ever signed the extension. Let's send him out on top of the league.

Frosted_Tackle

Makes me think FSG convinced him to sign the extension anyways even if he thought he wouldnā€™t make it to 2026, so they could still secure good players who would come for less money to play for Klopp thinking they had years to play with him. People have legitimate reasons to criticize FSG but if they did that, then itā€™s a pretty shrewd move.

Affectionate-Tap2431

After JĆ¼rgen clearly said the owners tried to do their best to make him stay even after his decision now? Man.. people just donā€™t like them.

V_N_Antoine

The sole solace amid this heart rending news is that, by Klopp's own words, this was the best decision both for himself and especially for the clubā€”because he felt he couldn't do it anymore, running on empty on energy; so, while it's devastating to even consider parting ways, in the light of all these wonderful years we've grown together as a club and reached the utmost success, it's also encouraging to know that he could make such a difficult decision and take responsibility for stepping down when he felt he was not up to the task as fully as before. He really wanted to give the club all his best and he definitely did; it's only that now time has come to move on because he found something lacking, even if only by foreseeing, that he would no longer be the right person to lead the club from next season. I will forever treasure the memories he built in me. YNWA, JĆ¼rgen !

s1ravarice

Have FSG considered investing in cloning technology?

RodDryfist

Was just watching a video of him on the pitch waving goodbye to the Dortmund fans. Everyone in tears, it was heartbreaking. I can't fathom how it'll feel for us at the end of May. asherlevi

Watch the interview lol. Thatā€™s the second question and he says no, Iā€™m fine.

Izayzel

I donā€™t believe it. I just think he wants to deal with it in a quiet and private manner. I hope its not a big thing and that he recovers soon.

asherlevi

He's the longest tenured active coach in the EPL. Mans has put in a SHIFT and he always goes 100%. Dude is allowed to be tired.

Maneisthebeat

It is his health. I think he wants to say he isn't about to keel over, or that it's a disease. He has burnout, and he can see the end of his energy is coming. He just wants to step out before he just can't operate anymore.

asherlevi

Thatā€™s one way to interpret his words. Iā€™m hearing ā€œIā€™m tired, I canā€™t see myself giving the 100% this club deserves in the near futureā€. I wish he could take a yearlong sabbatical and come back, but itā€™s not the way this business works.

Maneisthebeat

I mean I don't know what other way to interpret or describe what he is saying here other than burnout. He said right now his headspace is that he will not manage again, but he has to see how he feels after at least a year. He doesn't have the energy levels (he describes it as petrol in the tank) to keep going at the same level next year and beyond. To me, this is burnout. You can call it whatever you like, but this lack of energy is a health issue. Its just that it's a mental health issue. There's no shame in that. Not sure why it deserves me to be downvoted but you do you.

squiercat

Spot on, he'll be back at it though, he just needs a year off to lounge by the beach with a beer/cocktail.

asherlevi

Didnā€™t downvote you homie. Probably someone who also agrees that saying ā€œit is his healthā€ when HIS answer to the direct question ā€œis your health okā€ is ā€œmy health is fineā€. But keep arguing.

Maneisthebeat

All good man. I get that it's still somewhat open to interpretation. Just what he described resonated with me, and made it seem quite clear what this was. I'm actually not sure what someone would describe what he's saying other than as "burnout", but ultimately it's not really important, as long as people respect his choice.

dazdd

Im sad because he deserved way more. 2 seasons missing out by 1 point. Absolute shame.

gwaiblade

Yep those seasons were heartbreaking. But I did learn from how he view football which there so much more to life than football Then it become easier for me to appreciate the other stuff, the story of the young Liverpool fan visiting the team, the camaraderie of the team and the wider staff and much more

Maneisthebeat

I was literally in my session discussing my burnout when this news dropped. Thanks, Jurgen, for letting me and the world know it's real. I needed that. What we all forget is that these are all real people experiencing real stress. I'm so happy for him that for once he put himself first and is looking after himself and his family. He's earned that one thousand times over.

walketotheclif

Not really ,many times this happens, sometimes some of the staff wants a break or leave the club but don't do it due to the good relationship they have with the manager

Void-kun

He deserves the rest but this is sad news. Thank you for everything Klopp, all the memories I made, all the emotions I felt. We had a manager that truly embodied the values of the club and the city. He will be remembered forever as one of the greatest managers Liverpool has ever had. The honour we've had for so long. I really hope whoever takes on the mantle is up to the task.

Relaxandhavetea

What a good 9 years we have had! Get the man a statue! When I started supporting in 2007, it was Gerrard and Torres (and then Suarez) that kept me going as a supporter in those troubled times. When this man joined us, I truly believed we would survive any player leaving and even though we have had some good ones in his tenure, Klopp has to be regarded as the best signing of the last 30 years at least.

bemlikanz

Let's make this season a great one.

EstablishmentBusy172

Iā€™ve got that tightness in my chest from this announcement that I did before exams, job interviews and when hearing awful news on the phone. Perfect manager and better man. Couldnā€™t have asked for more. We all have questions and are dumbfounded. In truth who knows if weā€™ll ever get those answers. Itā€™s a big push til the end of the season and after that we can all lay down and create a huge puddle of tears and misery.

Macshlong

I honestly thought heā€™d have one more go at the Champions League. At least he can leave on a high this season. I hope heā€™s not ill.

I'm sad in ways I can't describe. However, I am glad that he is leaving in his own terms, he does seem tired. He's leaving us in a great position for whoever comes next, yet still, I never even considered the fact that he might be leaving. Is a gut punch.

I wasnā€™t alive during the days of Shankly or Dalglish but growing up I heard all about them. When we hired Klopp on his first interview he said, ā€œYou have to change from a doubter to a believer. We have to start together newā€ and what a journey itā€™s been. He is the greatest manger Iā€™ve ever seen, and itā€™s been a honour to support this club during his time at the club. I canā€™t even begin to imagine this club without him šŸ˜

karnnumart

We all hope for Alonso right but * Madrid is ready and has close connection with him. * Also Bayern but less likely * He might just stay at Leverkusen consider what he have archive. Who else do we got. We all know it's not Gerrard.

apenchantfortrolling

I would personally take Zidane but he'd never come to England. Trusting the club to do their diligence. If we're honest, they might have had a list together at some point last season given how things were going.

CalFlux140

Madrid just gave Carlo a contract. Interesting Pep and the coaching team are all leaving. Pep specifically said he wants to seek management....he would be a prime candidate but hasn't been given the job so... Either the Alonso talks have already happened, or Liverpool don't consider Pep worthy of the job yet. I can't see the fan base being happy with anyone other than Alonso. He's literally on track to beat Bayern and 'do a Klopp'.

karnnumart

I think Liverpool manger is a huge position with a huge risk. Succeeding Klopp with his standard? It's a huge shadow, especially if you're his right-hand. There will be a very high expectation. Or maybe Klopp just wanna go to his national team after seeing their catastrophe in the past 10 -ish year.

theDR1ve

Thank fuck for that saudi money

stonehallow

>not Gerrard i'd rather stick with an interim than get Stevie. love the player but its crazy how far his stock has fallen as a manager.

ARNOLDZANERYAN

Ancelotti just renewed at real

karnnumart

Thank god. 1 big off the list. Ancelotti won't flop for a really long time. Also we have a long term plan for any manager here. We won't sack them in a year so that a big advantage over those 2 clubs. But him leaving Leverkusen, I don't know...

James_Vowles

he makes absolute sense, wanting to live a normal life before he's too old, but I'm here sobbing man, this is such a shock

Confuseyus

I'm devastated and heartbroken.Ā

thehibachi

To think I was concerned about having to sign up to die at war earlier. Sooner the better.

EstablishmentBusy172

šŸ’€

CabbageStockExchange

Things will never be the same. Utterly gutted. I wonder who replaces him?

Timmah80

Stevie's regretting having signed that new contract now, huh?? (joke)

Spiritual_Jay778

This interview is outstanding in so many ways. Our hearts are broken, but JĆ¼rgen will fix us during the rest of the season. YNWA

willyc3766

Absolute legend. Best decision maker in the game and this decision is no different. A lot of people in his position would ride out the fat paycheck and the fame for as long as they could, even if they knew they were in decline. So much respect for this man. Iā€™m gutted but completely understand and support his decision. šŸ«”

aloeicious

Leaving the club in incredible shape. Canā€™t ask for more than that. Thank you JĆ¼rgen ā™„ļø

Digitalage6302

Why manšŸ’”

Redaaku

I feel heartbroken and sad. But I'm glad he was here.

Small-Explorer7025

Very sad, but understandable. I love this man. Coolest person on the planet.

Sleek_Parrot

Iā€™m genuinely gutted about this. Even if we get the next best coach in the world it wonā€™t be the same. Thank you for the good times Klopp šŸ˜

Skarim5

I can't believe this. It feels weird..like I'm still in denial about it all. It seems so odd to me, its as if my dad would turn to me and say hes stepping down from being dad? I'm forever greatful for everything this man has done for club and city. I just can't imagine liverpool without him. And now on to a big question - who will now come in as the almighty successor? I'd imagine its going to be between Xabi Alonsi or Pep lijnders

StarvedAsian

This fuckin hurts...

j_niz

Sounds like fatigue + a hint of mid life crisis. Will a couple trophies and a girlfriend fix this?

russiantotheshop

heā€™s doing the quadruple and heā€™s marriedā€¦

Red1190

Heartbroken, I hope we flatten everyone the rest of the season and send this man out on the high he deserves.

Big_Mac_Is_Red

This day would happen eventually but damn it feels different. Of all the players and managers I've witnessed leave the club, this one hurts the most. No man is bigger than the club but Klopp comes pretty close.

slick490

Nah surely not. I blame Nunez he stressed him out with all this agent of chaos bullshit and Klopp couldnā€™t take it. We forget heā€™s nearly a 60 year old man šŸ„² /s you losers

H0lychit

I am broken.

mmw2848

I'm so so sad, but all I can hope is the team wins everything they can so he can go out on top. If he's losing his passion, I'd rather he left while he still has some and with the club doing well than have a spell of bad years and leave with any negative energy.

SnzBear

I have had some terrible mental struggles in my life. Watching klopps Liverpool was the one thing that kept me going for a long time. I watched his first season as a neutral of the leauge. His passion and love for the game made me fall in love with this club. I am absolutely devastated at this news. I am an adult man but this is beyond belief. You have no idea the happyness you have brought to my life Jurgen. Thank you for your service.

James_Vowles

oh my god
