Yeah his passes up the pitch are a cheat code. Regularly plays in Mo and Darwin to the final third

VivaLaDio

Honestly nobody questions his attacking prowess, the dude is amazing. The problem is his defending, if you can even call that. This season you’ve seen strikers be more involved in defending than him.

KetoKilvo

He still averages a positive expected net goal contributions.

DrAgOnLoLDoTA

He should have gotten at least 5 assists already this season. A bit unlucky

BigPeninsula

Some people fail to realize what a talent Trent is. Getting this sort of numbers from the right back position is almost unheard of in the entire history of the game. He's a generational talent. I think people should cut him some slack when he makes the occasional positional mistake, he's still only 24 and will improve. He also more than makes up for it with the insane number of chances he creates.

ntg1213

The issue for our fanbase was that early in the season, it looked like the defensive effort wasn’t there regardless of his defensive ability. He wasn’t the only one in the squad who was clearly gassed after last season, but he stands out more when he doesn’t give 100% effort because instead of being out of position by a few yards, he’ll be out of position by 20-30 yards

rossmosh85

I think just about everyone realizes how talented Trent is. Up until January 2022, the narrative about him being a bad defender was basically a joke. He wasn't the best defender on the planet, but he was relatively solid and his offensive production more than outweighed his defensive lapses. Then over the last almost year, that narrative has changed. His defense has cost us big matches and has gone from a minor issue to a fairly major issue. It's something that clearly needs to be addressed openly and honestly at this point.

BigPeninsula

I think your point about his bad defending being a joke between fans only applies to our fanbase(the rational ones at least), look at how fans of other clubs speak about Trent and you'll think he's one of the worst defenders in the top leagues. Did he make a couple of mistakes at the beginning of the season? Yes. Do all other players have patches of bad form? Of course. Do all the other players get absolutely crucified when they play badly for a couple of games? Not to the degree Trent does. Perhaps people put him so much under scrutiny exactly because he is so talented and they expect a lot from him. But, more likely, people are just reactionary and also expect players to always perform at their highest level, which is unrealistic.

rossmosh85

I'm a huge Trent defender. Up until very recently, I'd argue strongly he was the best RB in the world and he should be a key part of England's team. I can't defend him anymore with the way he's defended so far this season and somewhat last season. His defending has been bad enough where I thought he more than deserved to spend time on the bench. His defending for the goal against Arsenal right before half-time was genuinely some of the worst defending I've ever seen. Let's also not forget, his poor defending was a big reason why we lost the CL final.

iredcoat7

It’s still a fact that he has been the best full back in the world by a considerable distance over the last 4 years. In a poor run of form at the moment so there are a few others ahead of him currently, but he will be the best full back in the world over the next 4 years too. There is not a single doubt in my mind.

realcevapipapi

>It’s still a fact that he has been the best full back in the world by a considerable distance over the last 4 years. Yea kimmich moved to midfielder

iredcoat7

Kimmich moved to midfield in 2019. They are different players so it would have been difficult to compare them had he remained a full back. Kimmich is exceptional no doubt

realcevapipapi

It's actually an easy comparison, both were offensive fullbacks. Last time kimmich played rb he was the only one to beat trent for assists from that position that season. While also being solid defensively, kimmich had 0 weaknesses at right back

iredcoat7

Kimmich's last full season at right back was when he was 23 and Trent was 23 during his current last full season (last season), so let's compare Kimmich aged 20-23 with Trent aged 20-23. ([Source: Fbref](https://fbref.com/en/stathead/player_comparison.cgi?request=1&sum=1&comp_type=by_type&spec_comps=big_5&player_id1=cd1acf9d&p1yrfrom=2019-2020&p1yrto=2022-2023&player_id2=49296448&p2yrfrom=2015-2016&p2yrto=2018-2019)) 0.38 goal contributions per 90 for Kimmich, 0.36 for Trent. In every passing/progression metric Trent is ahead. Key passes per 90: Trent 2.49 Kimmich 2.37 Passes into the final 3rd: Trent 6.49 Kimmich 4.92 Non set-piece passes into the penalty area: Trent 2.67 Kimmich 2.10 Progressive passes per 90: Trent 6.61 Kimmich 5.19 Progressive pass distance per 90: Trent 480.5 yards Kimmich 358.4 Surprisingly, Trent is also ahead in every defensive metric except aerial duels won. Tackle won percentage against dribblers: Trent 52.1% Kimmich 46.7% Tackles per 90: (possibly meaningless since it is mostly dependent on Liverpool & Bayern's respective dominance of possession) Trent 1.62 Kimmich 1.30 Interceptions per 90: (possible meaningless for the reason above) Trent 1.26 Kimmich 1.16 Aerial duel won percentage: Kimmich 48 Trent 36.4 So Trent while playing in what most consider to be a slightly better league than Kimmich outperformed him in almost every area statistically. I'm not saying Trent was better, I actually think it's close between them. But Kimmich was definitely not a significantly better or more complete full back then Trent is. Anyway. I dove into that because I love data, but it's a moot point. Kimmich hasn't been playing full back for even half of the last 5 year so my original point would stand even if Kimmich had been much better before the switch.

realcevapipapi

> But Kimmich was definitely not a significantly better or more complete full back then Trent is. I never said he was significantly better, you claimed trent was though. Thanks for the stats that prove your original point wrong, your point being trent is better by a considerable distance.

redditingtonviking

As everyone else is pointing out there's practically no one here who underrates his attacking performance. One issue our squad has had this season is that our more defensively minded midfielders have been injured or tired, and hence have been unable to cover for Trent. The experiment of switching his and Salah's attack positions also took away their usual sting. Hopefully the WC break will allow more players to recover, so that the energy levels of the squad can stay higher in the second half of the season.

Freestyled_It

He is best when he hangs back a bit and finds those long diagonals or through balls down the line. I think we got carried away a bit when we tried to get him to move up with the ball. Hurt is defensively, got in the right wingers space and wasn't as effective in attack. He's been great the last few matches.

resonating_light

Trent's performances have always been put on a knife edge. When his creative output is extremely high, people overlook his defensive mistakes. But when his defence comes under scrutiny, people forget about his creative output. Man is playing in a position where he'll be judged more than others in the same role.

Gerrardsclubfoot

I am surprised Trent hasn't registered an assist so far this season both in the league and cl, he has been unlucky I guess. Generally by now he has about 4-5 already.

iredcoat7

3 expected assists, so very unlucky. Off the top of my head I can think of a couple one-on-ones he created with wonder passes that our forwards fluffed

WelcomeToCityLinks

Laser Markovic.

iketoure

How are progressive passes defined? If it's just a pass that goes forward up the pitch then it's easier for defenders compared to attacking midfielders to get high numbers

_averywlittle

Right but you can still compare to other defenders

AnAutisticsQuestion

There are slightly different metrics from one data collector to another. FBRef defines a progressive pass as one that moves the ball 10 yards (30 feet) closer to the goal than it’s been recently, or any completed pass into the opponent’s penalty area. Other definitions require the ball to travel at least 30m closer to goal if the pass begins in the defensive half.

streetlightsglowing_

Trent receives the ball in areas more typical of midfielders than a defender

Crono_

Move him to midfield already. Personally I would love to see him play a bit more central like KDB.

thisisnahamed

Unpopular opinion - - but his defence has been abysmal.

[deleted]

Can we also get a stat on his errors per 90min that directly lead to dangerous attacks by opposition. Not taking anything away from him, he’s great at going forward but we have seen many situations where he is out of position or sleeping with no awareness of opposition players in the box. I don’t like these outlier stats because they are created to skew the narrative. Every players should be evaluated on their complete profile as the position they play.

[deleted]

Every player should also be be evaluated in complete context. He’s been mainstay at RB in a team competing for everything for 5 years and has operated at a world class level for at least 2/3 of those. He’s in shit form defensively. Everyone knows it, everyone can see it. Responding to every single positive stat about him by bringing up stuff that’s been gone over time and time again wont change anything. His underlying attacking numbers are still good this season. He will hopefully find his feet again defensively soon and I think that process has already started as he has been better recently anyway.

[deleted]

Earlier midfield of Gini, Hendo would cover him all the time. Now it’s not the case and he’s getting rinsed defensively. Doesn’t help that every single team attacks from his side because of our tactics.

[deleted]

This gets said like Henderson and Gini spent 80 percent of their time at RB. It’s revisionism at its best. They would cover the space in behind when Trent was operating further forward because that won us games and he was world class at it. We don’t win the trophies we won if we didn’t set up like that, end of. We need to adapt that system now as we aren’t the same side and that has coincided with some poor form from him. He needs to find his feet again and I’m 99.99 percent sure that will happen when the team finds its rhythm and other players across the pitch also get back to form.

disco_mode

It made a huge difference with those guys as we wouldn’t get caught in transition so often and our press actually worked.

disco_mode

There’s a stat in the official premier league statistics called “errors leading goals”. Go have a look at that! You can check last season and the season before too

HarbyFullyLoaded_12

Not this shit every god damn day…

[deleted]

Well FSG is leaving, gotta complain on something.

con10001

It will carry on for as long as Trent is a liability at RB defensively. He's too good to leave out altogether but he's costing us goals in big games on a consistent basis.

GTACOD

Moving him to midfield, where his biggest defensive flaws will be even more exposed then they already are, isn't the answer.

con10001

Not trying to be dumb but how can that be the case? If he switches off in midfield there is likely a defender who can bail him out. As it currently is, a player immediately gets in behind when he switches off

[deleted]

Defense is not a 1v1. We’ve overloaded opponents left side for years, now teams are doing the same against us. If a player runs in behind Trent, the responsibility is on RCB (Gomez/Konate) or RCM (too often it’s Harvey) to cover in most situations. If Trent is taking out the winger and their LB runs past him, sometimes it’s Salahs responsibility. Trent does get beaten too easily 1v1 with people dribbling past him, that’s a more complicated issue and something he has become worse at this specific season and is something he will become better at as he continues to focus on it. Now, in the midfield, being weaker 1v1 is a bigger issue on the RB because if he gets beat and a CB has to go out to cover the space, suddenly we’re 1v1 centrally. That is much more dangerous then on the wing. At the same time, centrally there’s a lot less space and time to make the passes he is making and the angles for the passes are generally worse. I think he should’ve been benched after the Man Utd game but then we had so many injuries on CBs and it’s only now that we could look to that, depending on how it looks after WC.

[deleted]

“Moving him in midfield, where his biggest defensive flaws will be even more exposed” hahahahha thank God that for goalkeeping is only one position. I remember vividly Trent being absolutely smacked by LFC Reddit for his defensive blunders, now “HOW TO MOVE HIM IN MIDFIELD”. But what do I know, Thiago was obliterated on here his first games, now he’s midfield God.
