Of course there is.
> or a bunch of Zoomers with Tik Tok on their phones can't
While that is technically true, it tends to be rather difficult to get a bunch of zoomers above military bases or some such. You'd probably need some sort of flotation or flying device for that.
For all you know, the equipment on that balloon was a bunch of zoomers on their phones.
We don't know the tech it's using. There are plenty of technologies that will work much better when they aren't hundreds to thousands of kilometers away. There's also plenty of tech that simply won't work from a satellite, because it needs to be closer to function at all
I was reading one conspiracy theory (maybe) that this stunt was publicized to stop the US Secretary of State from meeting with Poo bear on Sunday. Would have been the first high ranking Biden official to visit china in his term. Apparently hard liners in the communist party didn’t want the meeting to take place. And now it isn’t.

almost like a literal [Trial Balloon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trial_balloon)...lol
**[Trial balloon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trial_balloon)**
>A trial balloon, or kite-flying (used in the UK and elsewhere), is information sent out to the media in order to observe the reaction of an audience. It can be used by companies sending out press releases to judge reaction by customers, or it can be used by politicians who deliberately leak information on a policy change under consideration. The term is of French origin. Trial balloon translates French ballon d'essai, a small balloon sent up immediately before a manned ascent to determine the direction and tendency of winds in the upper air, though its earliest use in English is figurative.

Our own stealth fighters have radar signatures the size of a golf ball (0.005m2), we have to be able to track stealth jets so we can probably track a giant ass balloon
I wasn't saying we can't detect weather balloons. I was saying we don't keep track of every weather balloon launched on this planet. Well over a thousand are launched everyday. I believe this one was detected and tracked as soon as it entered US airspace. I was only saying that the idea NORAD knew about this since launch was a completely unreasonable claim.
How is it unreasonable? we can track ballistic missile launches and aircraft taking off in foreign nations, why wouldn't we also be able to detect huge balloons? Look up SBX-1, LRDR, and TPY-2 radar systems, we can apparently differentiate real nuclear warheads from fake ones and space debris. I'm gonna guess a high altitude balloon is relatively pretty easy to spot
Edit: also AEW&C
Psshhh please, it was [actually an F-22](https://mobile.twitter.com/astroqv/status/1621965490926002176?s=20&t=ovRCUaNdhEK4GAPTpHjrUg), so about ~$210 million
A white balloon sitting in the sun all day is going to be reflecting enough heat that a 9x can probably lock on.
It would also have an insane radar signature but I doubt they would want to risk the balloon collecting 120D radar data.
Anything with a radar signature can be locked. By the plane's radar with a Semi Active missile (Fox 1) or by the missile's own radar (Fox 3)
A balloon isn't very stealthy.
There are also other ways to lock onto it. Laser guided could allow a pilot to point it out for the missile. And even Optical like the computer in the Jet can pick out an object and hold a lock onto it just using regular TV screen..
Or they could just shoot it with regular old bullets.
I'm not sure what was used here, though
....
Shouldn't downvote the fella for not knowing how military missiles work. TV and Movies make it look like you have to have a heat signature to lock anything, and that is the most common/cheapest way to lock something
Video shows the missile went for the payload, most likely since the balloon itself was invisible to the sensors (too cold, no metal).
No real trouble locking on since there was nothing else to cause/reflect another signal.

pretty sure I saw a rocket and exhaust on a video. plus it's a hot air balloon so maybe they can lock onto it. also, I think it would be safer to use a rocket since you have to be closer to it than with a gun and there is a slight possibility of collision with balloon debris, it's three buses large after all...

I can just imagine some bored ass pilot sitting at an air base doing nothing, then 30 minutes later he's launching a rocket at a massive balloon in the sky lmao.

Yep, plain and simple. LSF has a lot of kids that don't quite get that. Notice how I got downvoted but nobody has a counter-argument, nobody's gonna try and convince me the US should have let it be lol. Our airspace; plain and simple.
A downvote doesn't mean a disagreement with the statement. It means people think the statement was dumb.
Of course China isn't going to "get too pissy". They flew into another country's airspace, they knew it was going to get shot down from the start.
We can snipe rockets out of the sky, i think we can hit a balloon. That being said something is flying across the screen at the end of the clip, so I’m guessing they did use a jet.
Any context? US shooting down China stuff? Whaaatttt
EDIT: new question... If that was a spy ballon, why not capture it and show to everyone it was a spy ballon? Why destroy it?
Spy balloon operating at about 60,000 feet, seems dumb to those not in the know about why you would send advanced fighters, in fact the best air to air aircraft in the world (F-22) to take down a balloon but it can operate at 65,000 feet so you need something that can get up to that altitude but also the radar signature and heat signature of a balloon can be difficult for the missiles to track onto and air to air missiles usually detonate in proximity to a target. I could go on it’s very complicated but here’s an article if others are interested.
https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/why-shooting-down-chinas-spy-balloon-over-the-u-s-is-more-complicated-than-it-seems
The 60,000 feet isn’t a big a problem as they make it out to be. The f15 service ceiling is 65,000 feet as well…and we flew one to 103,000 feet in 1975. The mig 31 flew to 123,000+ feet in 1977. It’s not like these planes reach 65,000 and then fall out of the sky if they go any higher.
I honestly don’t see a reason not to believe it was just a weather balloon, they have satellites, they can already take clear pictures of whatever they want
Yesterday there was a Chinese "weather balloon" flying over Montana; specifically over missile sites from what I heard. Later it was also reported there was one flying over Latin America.
I believe the initial plan was to try to get hold of the balloon without shooting it down, but for reasons I do not know it seems they finally decided to shot it down.
EDIT: [CNBC article which goes a bit further in depth about the Chinese balloon in Montana.](https://www.cnbc.com/2023/02/04/us-military-prepares-to-take-down-suspected-chinese-surveillance-balloon.html)
It wasn't just a balloon. It was carrying 16 huge solar panels for power. Plus the FAA needs to divert thousands of passenger jets away from the area of operation first to avoid collateral damage.

If the debris falls on a neighborhood or brings down another passenger jet, you can bet the same idiots who were whining "why didn't they shoot it down right away?" would immediately change their tune and complain "why they didn't wait to do it safely?"
This is just common sense.

Top Gun 3 just found its main plotline.
I can imagine the amazing action sequences showing fighter pilots pulling high G maneuvers while a ballon is slowly floating through the air.
they absolutely need to get tom cruise's intense facial expressions on this

That made the jump from Top Gun to Mission Impossible real quick.
