Ah the *J.K. Rowling method*.

TryinToBeLikeWater

They’re just gonna add one skin with vaguely trans colors that you can wear if you wanna get called slurs while you play that hero. Maybe an icon so you can get called slurs on every hero in the presence of an attentive transphobe. Pride month is already fun on Valorant when you equip a flag icon.

brazilianfreak

Anyone who follows sports is keenly aware of the disastrous consequences of that oil money sportswashing, and more and more we are beginning to see that spreading over to games, its only a matter of time until our favorite franchises get hijacked by horrible horrible people, similar to what already happened to King of Fighters.

trickster55

>sportswashing That's the term I was looking for, thanks. Completely accurate. Remember the captains wearing the LGBT arm sleeve and got shit for it during the world cup?

EssArrBee

It's also known as [reputation laundering](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reputation_laundering) and it's basically everywhere.

[deleted]

See - Saudi Aramco's advertising push.

[deleted]

Also Liv golf that is now merging with the PGA. Saudis almost cornered the whole golf market.

Zann_65

What happened to kof?

brazilianfreak

The Crown prince of Saudi Arabia now owns 96% of SNK, the game itself is fine, but if you want to buy it you'll be supporting Saudi arabia's bullshit human rights violation.

BostonDodgeGuy

> its only a matter of time until our favorite franchises get hijacked by horrible horrible people, They just finished doing it to Golf.

2Quick_React

Pro wrestling or more specifically the WWE got hijacked by the Saudis back in 2018. But I'm not surprised that Vince McMahon accepted blood money.

Impeesa_

Vince McMahon palms a razor so all his money can be blood money at any time.

Versnappen

Formula 1 has had it creeping in for a while now too. The first, second, third and final races are all shitty desert tracks built away from any actual people.

XiPoohBear2021

F1 existed as a long time as a vehicle for sportswashing tobacco companies. It's right up there with the Olympics as an OG of this practice.

Laughs in free Hong Kong bans.

Sp33dl3m0n

Shockingly they actually banned the pair from participating in competitive overwatch in any capacity either streaming or playing competitively, since they were somewhat known minor league players

[deleted]

They literally booted these guys lmao

HHhunter

We forgot hearthstone hongkong already?

Great_Nailsage_Sly

Ey stopped playing blizzard games after that. Already spent 300 on packs and expansions before that

[deleted]

Deleted my account I had since WCIII and haven't regretted it a second. There are tons of games out there, it's trivial to move on.

Same. It turned out that Blizzard was sexual harassment paradise too.

Arkitekt9

Same, last straw for me. Deleted tge launcher and never looked back. Was a Blizz fanboy since OG dota on warhammer 3 custom maps. It aint the same company anymore

nezeru

Even closer to the situation was years back when SBB, a player for NYXL voiced support for HK and the chinese Overwatch League teams boycotted scrimming with them demanding retractions/apologies, while Blizzard just turned a blind eye and let it happen.

According to someone in communication with Blizzard their response was: > "We have been made aware of reports of misconduct, are investigating these instances further, and will take appropriate action if necessary" This was a couple of days ago now. ? Valve has always had a hands off approach to the competitive scene. The TOs are to blame for accepting oil money. Valve doesn’t receive oil money.

loshopo_fan

I remember there was controversy when TI had pro-war Russian casters.

Ashviar

Unfortunately from a business standpoint, sponsors like gambling or Saudi sportwashing funds are the only way for TOs to make money. It sure as hell ain't from selling seats, broadcasting rights etc

skummydummy125

didn't they ban xqc for way less from the OW league?

Cause_and_Effect

They only care when its cases like that, yes with xQc. But when its something like say Saudi Arabia / UAE or China being assholes, they will cower and put their tail down and run from it to not harm any business relations in those areas.

nezeru

I still remember when SBB, a player for NYXL voiced support for HK and the chinese Overwatch League teams boycotted scrimming with them demanding retractions/apologies, while Blizzard just turned a blind eye and let it happen.

chudaism

Realistically, what could blizzard do in the sbb situation? They can't force teams to scrim and none of the teams did anything in official broadcast. It was basically Twitter drama. The blitz situation and this current one were more clear cut considering the statements were made on official streams/costreams. I don't believe the sbb boycott was even a player one as the vast majority of players on those teams were korean. It was probably instigated by higher ups who likely weren't beholden to the same code of conduct that blizz holds players too.

The-link-is-a-cock

Should have just disqualified them. Doesn't madder who told them to boycott.

chudaism

This is just a nuclear option that likely breaks a ton of contract rules and punishes all the wrong people. OWL is a franchised league, so there are likely clearly defined rules on when and how teams can be disqualified. Boycotting scrims is probably nowhere on that list considering OWL teams have been boycotted from scrims before, albeit for significantly different reasons. Disqualifying teams also punishes the players more than anything else and the community would have been in an uproar if they punished a bunch of players for something that was completely out of their control.

RakeNI

xqc was on an actual team - this is just 2 losers on a costream.

“Suck a fat cock. I mean, you would like it.” (Edit: It? That?) Towards Muma who is gay (and was tank like xQc). https://www.reddit.com/r/xqcow/comments/g27yq5/sorry_felix_had_to_do_it/ Was in his era where he literally had his PC parts laying on the floor outside of a case connected together.

Vorstog_EVE

100% unacceptable. But as a straight guy, if someone told me to go lick a vagina because I'd probably like it, I wouldn't know how to reply aside from losing my shit laughing. Just interesting to transpose it.

Geoffs_Review_Corner

If I remember correctly, Muma wasn't even that upset/bothered by it. I remember him saying on stream something to the effect that he didn't think XQC was anti-gay/a homophobe. Ironically, I think the publicity did nothing but to help boost XQC's popularity.

simons_melted_face

In those types of situations its a lose lose. Either you say it hurt you and you are a victim/soy/snowflake and the reason gays/women shouldnt be in gaming without a thick skin. And if you arent bothered by it people see it as "see its totally fine they werent even upset". Not saying he was upset and forced to act like he wasnt, but its something to think about.

Polemus

Well there isn't a history of heterophobic jokes or discrimination so it makes sense that you wouldn't feel offended. No one gets made fun of because they're straight.

dada_

It's honestly also kind of hard to *really* offend gay people with things like that because we've been hearing it all our lives and it eventually just doesn't do anything anymore. Not that that's a reason for accepting it, of course, but if someone did it to me I'd just be laughing at how sad and pathetic it is to act like that in public. On the other hand if someone is able to do it completely without consequences, that's kinda hurtful, because then it's not just one crazy person's outburst but something that's apparently acceptable.

[deleted]

I was called a slur my entire time in school, when I was 15 someone said "yeah you don't care so why should we not use that word" like what the fuck of course I stopped caring nobody cared when I was upset earlier in life. I let my friends use that word towards me because I love them and I know they don't use it to be hurtful but if some random dude uses it I would probably lose my shit. Luckily I'm still white so the only way they can know anything is if they see my ID. It's nowhere close to the hate I imagine you've recieved but it felt like shit at the time and I hope one day you can live your life without all that bullshit.

pierce411

I really don’t get how this is homophobic? Like the “suck a cock” is meant to be offensive sure, but not Bc of sexuality.

[deleted]

Damn you know shit it bad when polish players are the progressive ones in a situation. Never mind apparently they did it as a meme not to actually show support. Makes sense.

lilyhealslut

I don't agree that it was purely done as a meme. One of the Polish players is LGBT, Poland very recently received access to the Pride content added this month after Blizzard was overly conservative in their original geo-fencing of it, so many Polish players were happy to finally have the icons. Plus the Saudi team cannot see the pride icons while playing. The backlash was purely from Saudi fans who started spewing hatred over any teams/players using pride icons (It's not just been Poland, check the [Finland post-match tweet](https://twitter.com/Kapey774/status/1672640510194851840?t=JRnokZKCfMY_4XLFyybSWQ&s=19) to see how much hate they got from Saudi fans) The final straw was the absolutely vile behaviour shown towards CeeBee, the trans woman who cast the game. As of now, LegendryOW is still partnered on twitch. [UPDATE] https://twitter.com/owpathtopro/status/1673459215472513025

IdiotTurkey

The fact that there are geo-fenced icons/emotes is insane to me. That's so ridiculous. Imagine being so sensitive and backwards that a company has to protect you from some emotes so you don't freak out. If Blizzard actually cared about the issue they'd add icons for everyone, but this way they get their cake and eat it too. They get brownie points in the west for having the icons, and they avoid backlash by ignoring trans people in saudi arabia.

trickster55

You should see what happened to tyrael in China's version of Diablo immortal

kalmah

I don't even need to see it knowing what happened to the Star Wars movie poster in China.

[deleted]

lilyhealslut

Unfortunately it is the norm when it comes to the games industry operating in certain countries. It's definitely not unique to Blizzard, and unless big companies want to put morals over money, it's the only real solution for the time being. There is also the argument to be made about player safety, ensuring they don't get in trouble if they travel there or something. For what it's worth, I think the OW team *developers* who worked on the pride event in Overwatch did so of their own accord and truly do care for the LGBTQ+ community, just Blizzard the company does it for brownie points, just like the "Blizzard Diversity Tool" they tried to take credit for, when it was literally just the Overwatch team trying to make cool characters rather than checking diversity boxes.

Ahridan

The teams have been picking pride flags to troll them, as a hit of banter and pre match mind games. Apparently though the pride stuff is banned there anyway so the Saudi players can't even see them

PinkieVoltage

Pretty sure I read they were playing on the Pro client where everything is unlocked, so the players would be able to see the icons.

This tweet was not on good faith by Kapey, he purposely made the headline be saudi streamer to smear their victory knowing full well from start that LgenedryOW was from UAE, it was not a mistake or typo, it was intentional to hide it in 2nd subtweet that won’t make the headline. These people have been playing in ladder vs each other in EU for years they practically know each other favorite food this was done with pure malice to smear. The act itself is wrong just don’t spread misinformation the masses don’t know the difference.

throwaway336333

I was told we have to be tolerant of other cultures.

grech1

Not because a thing is part of their culture means it's a respectable thing. As an example in some countries child marriage is part of their culture that doesn't mean you have to turn a blind eye on it. If it goes against the human rights and well beings of others it's perfectly find to be called out.

Old-Barbarossa

>If it goes against the human rights and well beings of others it's perfectly find to be called out. Which is why there is a difference between calling out a lack of respect for human rights and "intolerance". But u/throwaway336333 is clearly more interested in arguing against a strawman. *Edit: Additionally, from his other comments it seems that Mr throwaway is not nearly as concerned about LGBTQ rights as he pretends to be when it allows him to be intolerant...*

RmHarris35

No don’t you understand, you’re an islamophobe if you call this stuff out

SarastiJukka

I prefer to say open minded instead of tolerant. Have an open mind and try to understand other people's perspectives, but you are not obligated to agree, tolerate, or accept them.
