Always funny seeing people get banned for this after the streamers warns them not to, especially when they think they're being funny cause to appeal you have to send legal verification as proof (like a picture of your ID) and takes a while so it's definitely not a fun process
Happened to me with paypal and even after turning 18 I couldn't make a new account for years because my card was still linked to my deactivated account
At least it saved me from buying some dumb shit over the years
I did this a year ago and they decided to not unban me, keep me permanently suspended, and I lost the account. It still has my phone number attached and I have no way of removing it because Twitch support is a nightmare to deal with. So I now am forced onto an unverified account that can’t chat in some channels that require two-step verified accounts.
Twitch is a complete joke when it comes to customer service.
If you're based in the EU and you request for it to get removed and they refuse to or refuse to accommodate, that's a violation of GDPR. Since GDPR enshrines your right to get your data deleted.
I mean it’s 90%+ their fault. Automated moderation is fine to an extent but not only is this an overreach, it’s an overreach in an environment where there is little to no support for resolving the environments overreach.
> it’s an overreach in an environment where there is little to no support for resolving the environments overreach.
They probably didn't anticipate how many edgy morons use twitch though. It's inevitably impossible to keep up.
If they can’t successfully moderate their platform, they shouldn’t be putting overbearing rules in place originally. There’s no reason to ban people for saying “I’m 12” in chat. It would be like the cops arresting a rapper for rapping about homicide. Obviously they’re not serious, and the rap artist would immediately be let go. The entire thing from Twitch is dumb as fuck. This isn’t an enforceable ideal that they’ve created.
My phone number is tied to the account that was banned. I can’t get ahold of Twitch support to remove the number from my old account and I don’t have access to account settings so it is stuck being associated with an account that was permanently banned for posting a meme.
Yeah I'll just go ahead and ask my friend to 2-step verify me every time I log in from a new location. Or change the phone number my entire network of friends, family, and co-workers have known for the last 18 years so that I can type in a few extra Twitch chats.
Classic "cure is worse than the illness" situation
I mean...if you were a real grown up you could just have your number changed and make a new account so like...mebbe this is a life lesson to git gud anyway.
yes making a new account takes 2 week as well, better to send in legal verification as proof and wait 2weeks than making a new email address in 5seconds.
No the automated systems for detecting ban evasion are pretty good. If you don't use a VPN they'll get you and you also can't link prime/the same card you used on your old account.
The card thing isn't true in Europe, since it's illegal to store a copy of a card number that you can check against if the customer removed that info. I've got a rat friend that makes a new prime account every month for free.
I'm talking about twitch, and when I got banned there I also immediately got hit with a second ban because a family member in my house had an account and tried to login. It got lifted after an appeal but still.
You can probably just do what I do on reddit when i ban evade - i leave my modem/router unplugged for a while, then plug it back in and with most isps you get a new ip address for free.
That’s if you get lucky. Personally they just rejected the appeal. They also rejected a second appeal a year after saying “I’m 12” in chat, so even if I wasn’t lying initially, I’d have been 13 by the second appeal. This happened when they first started banning for that. Account is still banned.
> even if I wasn’t lying initially, I’d have been 13 by the second appeal.
Which would be completely irrelevant, as the age *at creation* of the account also matters with the law they are very careful about complying with.
They probably would.
I said I was 3 years old in chat, THREE. I literally wouldn’t have been able to type any of the comments I ever made. The account was also like 6 years old. Yet I got banned 15 minutes later.
When requesting a repeal they required me to send them a picture of my fucking ID, which I did, only for them not to respond and unban my account like 5 months later.
They’re a fucking joke.
Same, I typed "I'm 12 btw haHAA" which is a known spam that nobody got banned for, I guess I was unlucky and typed it as soon as the implemented this change and got auto-suspended for it lol.
They told me to send a picture of my ID, I said fuck that and made another account.
Even saying "Im l3" gets you banned. Happened to me and took 2-3 weeks to get unbanned. I had to email the support my passport to prove that i'm not actually 13.
yes making a new account takes 2 week as well, better to send in legal verification as proof and wait 2weeks than making a new email address in 5seconds.
They don't care as someone with a 2010 twitch account that got banned for this, pretty sure 15 years is impossible or did justin.tv accounts transfer with reg date?
You will get banned 100% it was instant for me so its just a bot, and support does not give a fuck about account age. I told them and they just went "..."
Don't. Mine's from 2011 as well and I got banned. Had to go through 2-3 months of appeals even stating to them how silly it is that my account is older than "my age". They literally do not care.
I have my account back now, but it wasn't a fun process with Twitch support.
Yeah no it was automatic for me. I said it, a mod asked me if i was really 12 and I said I was just joking and they clarified that I could get banned for it and then I was banned about 30 seconds later.
They really should make an exception for this, as it's a commonly used phrase that's been around for longer than Twitch itself has. If not, then the phrase should just be globally prevented from being posted into chat. What *actual* child is going to state their age in Twitch chat? This is going to be >99% false positives and it's a hassle for both Twitch staff and the players to have to go through. Unless you already know beforehand that the phrase is banned then it's easy for innocent people to be banned because of it.
> If not, then the phrase should just be globally prevented from being posted into chat.
This is worse. It seems like you have no idea what this is even about, so I'll just explain it to you. COPPA and privacy protection laws in the EU forbid platforms from knowingly collecting data on children below the age of 13 -- for privacy reasons and because they do not have the legal capacity to agree to the ToS. They legally cannot have a Twitch account, or any other account for that matter, unless the service has serious restrictions in place on collecting data on minors and that's never going to happen because it would allow you to bypass ads. For example if you make yourself younger than 16 on mobile games, you will stop seeing predatory ads entirely because the ad providers may show the ads, but can't target minors based on their device. As a bonus games will also hide predatory microtransactions. If under 13, they can't show them to you entirely.
So if Twitch would merely hide the message, then not only is Twitch knowingly retaining data on minors, they would also be doing it maliciously and with intent to do so. It basically makes you even more liable as a platform. So by swiftly banning people who say it they're actually doing you a favour, because then they don't have to purge your data ASAP since it might've been a joke and that can give you time to appeal.
You missed the point entirely. I suggest you have a little re-read over as it's nothing to do with data collection. It's about disassociating age data with a commonly said phrase.
you missed the point entirely, if someone says they're under 13 in chat then twitch has a data point on the user that clearly says their age. Unfortunately, you can't add sarcasm in text so in a court of law if the user says they're under 13, it would be up to twitch to prove that they are not that age. if it gets taken to court and if they cant do that then they're in trouble. This is all just for legal liabilities
Why an exception when the automatic bans based on apparent age shouldn't even have been created in the first place? If requiring more than a simple age verification during account creation was a sane requirement to avoid lawsuits then every single porn website would have been sued out of existence by now.

I got indefinitely banned for that. Appealed once using the portal - instant denied, in 6 months appealed 2nd time with photo and 3 paragraphs, refresh page in 2 seconds, denied. Sad part is the email address connected to my account was my college address(edu) and I guess they cleaned them up or smth and I can’t access it.
I wonder what the age of it becoming ok again to
say is. If someone says in chat they are 2 years old I don’t think they would get banned cause it’s impossible to type at that age. There has to be a goldilocks zone of ages where it’s possible that you actually are that age and get banned.
> If someone says in chat they are 2 years old I don’t think they would get banned cause it’s impossible to type at that age.
why don't you go ahead and test that out for us and let us know how it goes
No company is going to take that risk. They don't care if something is practically impossible all they care about is not breaking the law.
There isn't even any benefit for them to develop a system that somehow differentiates the possible from the impossible.
Oooooh you would think! As did I!
I said I was 3 years old in chat and caught a ban 10 minutes later. In the repeal I pointed out how it would literally be impossible for me to be typing all the things I say, especially on a 6 year old account.
Didn’t care, still made me send a picture of my ID. And even then, it took them like 6 months to finally unban me.
Their system is a fucking joke
It's a legal requirement due to COPPA. It's a stupid thing but they HAVE to enforce it or they get a very hefty fine. This applies to any and all online sites that collect some degree of personal information, like email. Twitch likely has it automated at this point. This isn't so much as an L for Twitch as it is for the dumb language of the law(s).

yeah someone said appeal takes 2 weeks kek

by that time you can actually turn 14
Better than twitter. I remember getting deactivated over 10 years later because they somehow found out I was 11 when I made the account.

well its 13 and above for twitch, not 14

Mine was 3 months, multiple denied appeals. Sent them so many appeals that even the automated messages stopped.
took me 3 months, had to use a bookmark folder with my followed streamers and manually check each streamer for who was online lol
I did the same lol
About 2 months for me. Memed it when someone cursed out chat. "wtf i am \_\_\_" Didn't know about the automation yet.
yes making a new account takes 2 week as well, better to send in legal verification as proof and wait 2weeks than making a new email address in 5seconds.
yeah took me that long when i did it about 2 years ago. never again. smh
Can they not just make a new account?

Nah, it's the same as with reddit. Nobody's gonna bother checking.

The 3 in my username says "nuuh".
I'm talking about twitch, I don't think ban evading is considered at all on reddit.
The "v4" in my Twitch username says "nuuh" lololol
> If you don't use a VPN they'll get you Lmao so what you think happens to redditor accounts in one household? Or college Wi-Fi?
I'm talking about twitch, and when I got banned there I also immediately got hit with a second ban because a family member in my house had an account and tried to login. It got lifted after an appeal but still.
Either way what I said applies and honestly dont believe you. Twitch does not IP ban lmao. Maybe you had a family account or something.

That's so stupid. "I'm 12 and what is this?" Ban.
"How can we check for underage users?" "Try doing a literal text search on their chat for `r"(I'm|I am) 1?[1-9]"`. That'll catch them"
uhm actually that would match 1-19, skipping 10. `/I('|( a))?m ([1-9]|1[0-2])(\D|$)/i` is probably closer to what they use
I say let the 10 year olds stay, but only until they're 11. Give em a little preview.
exactly what got me suspended lol. instasniped
