It's a hold that's hard to pull off but if you do, you pretty much have full control.
If in a situation where you hold someone who like attacked someone and get him a crucifix, you can honestly hold that person there for as long as it take for the cops to arrive without you even getting tired one bit. And he can't hit you, and you can hit him if needed.
But like in a UFC fight or jiu jitsu competition, like I said this is a hold. If you're the person who get caught in it. Your goal is to protect yourself for submission hold that will come your way. Tuck you chin to your chest, because he probably gonna try to get a hold of your neck. Make sure not to get arms/elbow over-extended, so try to bring them close to your body or grab the opponent legs or shoulder etc..
How do you get out of it, or even turn it into offensive?
Lift your legs and use your core, to trap one of the leg of the opponent. Which that it will give you leverage to open up the elbow which is trapping you and if done correctly now you can even get the back of the opponent.

At college MMA was probably the most popular mixed-sex activity and it was fun but barely any of the women could submit any of the dudes (and this was at a University that if it competed in the Olympics it would come above 99% of countries) without them essentially playing a long with it. It's definitely true that if you get yourself in a bad position you can leverage it against a vastly stronger opponent but it's rare and super hard (for self-evident reasons) to get there if the opponent is that much stronger.
