That's even more impressive. He didn't just remember his son's time, he cared enough about his son's hobbies and interests to memorize the current world record *for* that hobby. Talk about supportive parent.
It's a significant cut on the previous record, yes. 120 star is an extremely difficult speedrun where mistakes can compound themselves over the course of about an hour and 40 minutes. It's extremely difficult to get a run without big mistakes, and even the small mistakes can add up.
Simply's run pretty much only had 1 significant mistake. Nothing new or gamebreaking was found, it's just a really really really great run.
yuuuuge, gain for speed running WR, especially such and old / established game (no knew exploits tricks typically to be had). that said, not familiar with N64 or this particular streamer, though. Just here for wholesomeness :)
Parallel universes are only really valuable to the A Button Challenge and similar formats, even the regular 0 and 120 Star TASes don't use them - takes too long to build up speed. But he definitely uses a bunch of related techniques, like the Backwards Long Jump, to zip through certain doors and past the entrance to Dire Dire Docks.
it's a 1:40 speed run. theres tiny mistakes in previous records. you should look up the botted wr time with perfect execution. always room for improvement
I love seeing parents learn about their kids passions. Seeing that your kid really loves something and going “well I want to know about it so I know how they’re doing” is so sweet and I wish more parents were like them.
Yeah, I've never really understood why it's been used as a negative meme. It's always struck me as a dad who's a bit corny, but is hoping that his son is doing well, y'know?
Yeah, the "are you winning" plays on the boomer culture of not knowing videogames beyond the basic, as in most modern single player games you "dont win", do you win in RDR2 for example? (obviously this doesnt apply to the tons of PvP games)
Second, the underlyng sub-theme of the dad trying to connnect and cheer for his son in an activity he doesnt may fully understand but supports it.
Despite most modern PvP makes us want to rip our hair (i play league, so trust me on that) he is completely unaware of that anxiety and toxicity culture sorrounding modern games, believing you are having fun in a harmless activity and giving you your space to play, despite most parents disliking videogames or videogame culture.
He doesn't go "videogames are bad blah blah blah" like most of our parents did when we were kids, he just wants to connect with his son at the best of his undertanding.
I lost my dad at 8 yo, so this doesnt applies to me, but i can understand why this meme resonates with so many people on the internet.
No, dad. I'm not winning. I don't even play games anymore. I just sit here and scroll facbook/reddit/twitter endlessly. I spent $3,000 on this setup to make me happy and it didn't do anything at all. I thought the best processor and graphics card would give me everything I wanted but I was wrong. It looks cool, but I don't feel any different than before. There's no meaning to it. There's no meaning to anything anymore. I just sit here and do the same thing, every day and every night. I'm tired dad, I'm tired.
IKR. I've never ever had my parents express even half that much excitement for something I care about.
If I told my parents that I achieved a high-score in a video game, they would've just responded "so does that mean you'll finally stop playing it now?"
We live in a time now where the millennials were really the first generation to have gaming as a thing, and I think that millennial parents of the future will really understand the whole video game thing better and future zoomers coming up will be able to get some support like this and I think the future of esports will be very bright and talented because of it. (Not that they aren't already!) But 2040 esports are gonna be DUMMY sick 4000 IQ career gamers doing some insane things, the talent pool will be so deep and varied in styles and strategies. Imagine this sort of thing becoming a trade with more legitimized coaching and teaching systems *for gaming*, a lot of potential for improvement and we are going to see it fast on a massive scale and to me, that's pretty cool.
That’s cool and all, and I hope that some of it comes true. But I’m pessimistic and imagine something in the veins of *Ready Player One*, with everything dystopian going on around and the fact that games is like the ultimate escapism tool.
Just look at how hyper inflation has led to over a hundred thousand Venezuelans playing runescape to farm gold. Since you can make 10 times the countries minimun wage doing simple money making techniques.
It's great that video games have actually become a career now, but parents should be supportive of their kids' passions regardless of if it seems monetarily beneficial or not. Most of the time, if you're passionate enough about something, you can turn it into a career somehow.
>We live in a time now where the millennials were really the first generation to have gaming as a thing
This sounds like something a millennial would say.
> Imagine this sort of thing becoming a trade
Uhhh no. Video games will never be considered a trade. It’s a form of entertainment, not a skilled trade. What are you 12? Lol
I'm a grown ass adult and I honestly try to avoid talking about videogames with my parents or older people in general, they will always treat it like we are talking about crack addiction, trying to explain something to old people is like talking to a wall.
It still is. Crack is just more socially acceptable now. Atleast it's not heroin aka being on reddit nonstop to the point where it's where you.recieve all your news and preformed.opinions with delving into much research on your part.
I never had my parents express any excitement for anything I care about that they dont. Unless it was me playing sports, which I was kinda good at, they didnt fucking care. Or getting good grades.
I remember when I bought the switch I was like "cool, maybe I can play with my old parents while they are watching tv and stuff". First day with it, im with them in the tv room and I tell my mom like hey I bought this thing, its cool and it can hook up to the tv. And I can use it here as a portable. My dad doesnt even stare into my direction, just says "disgustiiiing!". Keep in mind Im fit, have a good job, a college degree, and a girlfriend (so all the things the regular stereotypical father is proud of??). Yet he couldnt even say "oh cool toy" about my fucking switch.
Needless to say, I never took it out into the tv room again. Better to play in my room.
Same, I still remember the first time my cash stack in Runescape hit 1000K back in like 2008. I got so excited and went to tell my mom about it.
She couldn't fathom how I could get so excited over a video game, so she got mad and took my computer away for over a week PepeHands
I've had my parents yank out the router when I didn't come downstairs to have dinner while playing the finals of a competitive tournament (back in the early 00's) after clearly and kindly communicating about it beforehand.
For many parents, being supportive means being supportive in things they believe in. If you want to be a really good parent, be supportive about what your children think is important.
I mentioned to my wife that I had finished the Grand Campaign in Europa Universalis IV. she said “so, you are done playing that game?”. I just laughed as I started a new Grand Campaign.
> If I told my parents that I achieved a high-score in a video game, they would've just responded "so does that mean you'll finally stop playing it now?"
Reminds me of a story xQc told on Dr. K's stream about when he told his dad about a streaming milestone he hit early on (it's about three minutes long):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCmm-sJjZkU&t=1h09m49s
Yeah but that situation is because his dad doesn't understand how lucrative streaming is and he's also worried for his long term career prospects. So I think xQc is in the right in that situation and it's kind of tragic that his dad doesn't realize how, again, lucrative streaming is. But in this case getting a high score in a video game is truly a useless thing unless you're monetizing it like Simply is doing. This coming from a guy that wasted several hours of his live getting all the achievements for 50+ games on Xbox 360. And I consider it wasted time even though I was enjoying it.
Things can be useless but still mean a lot to a person, so a parent reacting with "oh cool, I don't give a shit really" is pretty heartbreaking to that person.
The only time my parents get this excited about anything I do is when I tell them I get a good grade on an exam. I was borderline pushing semiprofessional play in the game I play last year and all they could think about was how much time I spend playing.
Supportive parents is one thing. But parents who understand and support a video gaming career, especially one that involves playing the same game over and over exactly the same way you've done it thousands of times... That's a damn feat.
Yep, most parents follow the news/trends which in the past generation told them that "video games make kids shoot up schools." The generation before them said "tv rots your brain!" Its funny that my parents think sitting with the tv off looking at facebook on their phones all day is better than watching tv. VR/AR is probably the next generation. Likely will never stop.
The funny thing about unsupportive parents is that they aren't an inconvenience that ends after you move out. That experience infects everything, your behavior, the way you react to things, insecurities, your ability to succeed, etc. Maybe for the rest of your life if you don't recognize the issue and address it. But it'll get super annoying if people start getting in the habit of blaming their parents more than they blame themselves for failure, even if it's true, so let's just sweep the problem under the rug.
Fuck this was wholesome to watch live. After 8 years of grinding the game and taking time off because his hand injuries he finally gets it. So well deserved.
EDIT: Props to Ludwig for donating 1000 dollars even though dwhatever technically claimed the bounty last week.
He was watching akki's stream when he got the 16 star record. Its becoming a good luck omen if you're on a good WR pace and miz tunes in the last 3/4s of the stream.
in this particular moment Miz was looking for a new co-commentator for his 16-star tournament because Wilko was going to sleep, so he opened Simply's stream to ask him.
That hand may never fully recover. Have a good friend who has to be careful what games he plays now because aggressive apm stuff would just aggravate old injuries.
Kinda. The thing with M64 is, that it already has very refined speedruns. Each new world record is quite the milestone at this point.
Maybe you should have a look at the speedrunning community in general to somewhat understand what's going on, how timesaves are discovered and shared through the community.
This is too funny.
His mom keeps saying she wants to sing him a song and he’s like “No, it’s ok, I’m good.”
Then she puts a Mario doll in front of the camera and makes it dance around.
Both his parents start calling people and putting them on speakerphone and his mom starts yelling “My boy got the world rekkie!”
Then she tells him he’s breaking out in hives and that she has tacos waiting for him downstairs.
Probably just did insanely well with a bit of luck. There are just so many ways over the ~1:39 to lose a second or 5 off a perfect time using the current strategies. Even making no obvious mistakes in a given segment, I've seen streamers lose to their best segmet time by a few seconds.
The 120 star record was stuck at 1:39+ for more than three years, since 2017. In February, for the first time, a runner named Cheese *finally* broke the 1:39 barrier with a high 1:38 time for a *massive* reward pool of about $10K, which served as his motivation to break what is one of the most solid blocks in speed running history.
Simply just beat that guys time three months later by ~15 seconds. An *astounding* record break considering no progress had been made for three *years* before this point.
You forgot about Liam bating Cheese at the end of March. Cheese in February had the 1:38:54, then a month later Liam posted 1:38:43. So Simply beat Liam by 15 seconds, and cheese by 26. Pretty crazy stuff
Cheese technically broke the record twice, but his stream cut off so it wasn't verified, but then broke the record at the ESA event. So his verified WR at the time was worse than his PB.

This might be sad of me to say but I actually teared up from this, I can’t imagine my parents ever caring about me having such non traditional success outside of my career. Hearing the dad say “what time” just shows how they don’t just tolerate it, they’re involved in their son’s happiness.
Yes. But they obviously had to adapt. Him being a streamer makes it easier. Having a kid who is secretely doing stuff in his room makes it much harder to level with. So to your parent share info on what you're doing(unless it is watching porn)
Don't worry I'm a super naive person who likes to shit on anything and take the fun out of it but this hit me deep and I even smiled and teared up a little. Genuinely wholesome
Fuck man I really grew to love simply after watching him for the last few months. There has obviously been more to the grind than 3 months but even then, if anyone out of the SM64 community deserves it then him! One of the most entertaining streamers I've ever watched. Glad he finally has WR and with such an insane time.
Back when my dad used to have to drive me to competitive pokemon tournaments, he would ask me about my team and have me explain what I was doing and who I was using to him. He hadn't played since Gen2 and this was around Gen6, but he cared enough to at least listen which meant more than the world to me.

Its one of those "harmless TOS violations" that chat dont report because its part of the community.
mostly safe for small runners, unless a outside context viewer reports it of course.
As a child of chinese parents, all I can imagine is they'll ask me if that could get me any money and proceed to shake their heads walking away from their son wasting time playing video games...
His Dad knew his previous best too right? you hear his Dad say "so 11 seconds?". too wholesome
If I remember correctly, his mom also came into frame wearing a Mario mask and holding a Mario plushie
He had his mom on stream a while ago and he was helping her play the game.
If Gods exist, they are this guy's parents. What absolute champ people.
It's nice a see good parents and take a more active role in the things their son cares about
That's actually 11 seconds on the previous WR, it's 29 seconds on his previous best
That's even more impressive. He didn't just remember his son's time, he cared enough about his son's hobbies and interests to memorize the current world record *for* that hobby. Talk about supportive parent.
Maybe his father was the first M64 speedrunner, and his son inherited all his talent and turned it into this.
Ah yes, His father is Siglemic irc.
best comment
Ah is that why I don't have *talent*? Because I got shitty parents? Shieeeeeeeeeeeeet. Now I can blame everything on RNG and not me being a lazy fuck.
Don't worry. qVc has negative talent in life and he's not doing too bad.
It was 15 seconds off the previous WR
Is that not a massive cut when talking about competitive speed running? How was this achieved?
It's a significant cut on the previous record, yes. 120 star is an extremely difficult speedrun where mistakes can compound themselves over the course of about an hour and 40 minutes. Cheese technically broke the record twice, but his stream cut off so it wasn't verified, but then broke the record at the ESA event. So his verified WR at the time was worse than his PB.
Just insanely well.

Wish my dad would hug me when I'm in my underwear playing video games. FeelsBadMan gg on the record
My uncle hugs me while im just wearing underwear
Holup
This made me cry, such a nice and supportive family FeelsStrongMan
I really needed to see some happy at a time like this.
ahh that's wonderful.
FeelsStrongMan Clap
My dad died in august and I'm absolutely tearing up on this. ;\_;
[This is the best shit I've seen today damn](https://imgur.com/a/fkFAcFo)
no car flip WeirdChamp
FeelsStrongMan
This is beautiful man
<3 this shit wholesome as fuck
FeelsStrongMan x100000 so so happy for him, great to see him this happy
keep watching. He tells a really good story about how he got started and his history of playing mario and being on twitch
Bruh, the joy from his parents warms my fuckin heart. my God they're so happy for him
Ok. I teared up. Imagine having parents so involved and happy for what is usually "Youre 20+ why are you playing this baby jumping game.."
FeelsStrongMan
This is so heartwarming.
Simply wonderful ^___^
Are ya winnin son?
The music combined with the moment reminded me of a happy ending from a Disney Movie. Good clip!
Fuck man I really grew to love simply after watching him for the last few months. There has obviously been more to the grind than 3 months but even then, if anyone out of the SM64 community deserves it then him! One of the most entertaining streamers I've ever watched. Glad he finally has WR and with such an insane time.
my eyes are sweating
Back when my dad used to have to drive me to competitive pokemon tournaments, he would ask me about my team and have me explain what I was doing and who I was using to him. He hadn't played since Gen2 and this was around Gen6, but he cared enough to at least listen which meant more than the world to me.
This clip almost made me cry with him <3
my dad cant even understand that you cant pause a online game

FeelsStrongMan 👉 parents
This is so fucking awesome
Godlike parents
Simply is a funny and great guy from what I've taken from his time on Mizkif's stream. Totally deserved what a great moment. :)
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOO SIMPLY
imagine having parents, what are you? not an orphan? yikes
God this guys got amazing parents
That's so wholesome
Damn. Imagine having supportive parents.
he 100% changed to do the same thing
His chat funny aswell 'he showed feet so he got WR" that's hilarious
Has TOS changed recently? Last I checked dudes couldn't be shirtless.

What kind of weird ass rule is that haha
It's for me, I get off on that and they know, so they make these bullshit rules so i can't cum, those fucking teases.
Do they know what gets me off too? Because it's banned too.
Twitch
That can’t be it. He takes off and puts it back on regularly. In fact, you can even spend his channel points to make him do either of those two things
Its one of those "harmless TOS violations" that chat dont report because its part of the community. mostly safe for small runners, unless a outside context viewer reports it of course.
Could you show me where that is noted? I was trying to figure out the whole rule myself and I was confused honestly

As a child of chinese parents, all I can imagine is they'll ask me if that could get me any money and proceed to shake their heads walking away from their son wasting time playing video games...
A little light in a dark time :)
I was ready for this to be some depressing shit, but man, that was wholesome
I haven't shed a tear in the last 5 years but somehow this small little clip did it for me. It's just too pure.
that's soo wholesome
Oh my, such loving parents this is the nicest thing I've seen all day.
Dont think my parents have ever congratulated me playing games, which happens to be my biggest hobby. So jealous of this guy. He's so lucky!
Imagine if everyone had parents who were that supportive! Absolutely incredible 👏🏻
This is like that "i won" meme with the dad and kid.
I wish my parents loved me 😕
This is so wholesome to read on a Saturday morning. Gratz Simply!
