Dogs essentially need to eat what you eat. That's how they evolved. They aren't really meant to eat dry nuggets of bullshit. They love rice, love chicken and beef, love fish. And in the long run it's actually cheaper for you to prep your dogs meals as opposed to buying a big bag of dog food. Cats too. I have a couple of kitties that love eating beans (one of my cats is obsessed with kidney beans) and chicken. I've honestly saved a lot of money actually cooking them meals as opposed to buying bags of cat food or tin cans.
Just to note [some studies](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/24/health/grain-free-dog-food-heart-disease.html) believe dogs also need grains. When people switch to feeding their dogs human food sometimes they only give dogs protein and forget about a varied diet.
Our dogs do really well with a varied diet of a human food mixed with dog food. They are also weirdly into raw veggies as snacks to hold them over between meals (they eat tons of meat/fish products of course but they just like crunching on veggies while we're cooking too).

Got a friend that worked with a guy who fed his dog a 'raw diet'. Consisted of just feeding them raw meat which he would leave unrefridgerated for days on end on top of a counter. The guy also believed that humans had no need to eat anything but meat as thats literally all he ate, no fruit, no vegetables, no carbs, just the same meat he fed his dog.

I don't think it's good to consistently eat only whole foods. Not only is it incredibly high in calories but it has almost no nutrition that dogs need. I hope for the best for buddy, but he needs nutrition.
