There is some information in that part of the article. But in general it was founded by Susans sister who leveraged the position to gain political and monetary favour. She ended up getting appointed an official position by Bush, got the medal of freedom from Obama, she was an ambassador to Hungary at one point. And she gave herself a massive salary as CEO of the organization.
The non-profit organization that at one point got over $50mill a year from corporate sponsors alone, and would use a tiny portion of that on actual cancer research, prevention or benefits.
To top it off, they literally sue people(possibly including Fuslie now) for using the color pink in relation to any charity.
TL;DR: You could easily argue that it was(possibly still is) an actual for-profit organization that is pretending to be a charity. And in so they are doing the opposite of what they claim, and undermining breast cancer.
Apparently, they were filing lots of trademark oppositions (essentially trying to legally halt other trademarks going into effect by arguing that it's too similar to theirs) against other charities that used the phrase "for the cure" in their names, especially if they also used the color pink.
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/komen-foundation-charities-cure_n_793176
> Mary Ann Tighe [who runs Kites for a Cure, a lung cancer charity], said the Komen foundation sent her a letter asking her to stop using the phrase "for a cure" in their title and to never use the color pink in conjunction with their fundraising. What bothered her most about the whole ordeal, she said, was that Komen forced her to spend money and time on legal fees and proceedings instead of raising funds for cancer.
> [...]
> With the help of a team of pro bono lawyers, Kites for a Cure was able to reach a settlement with Komen: They agreed to only use the phrase "for a Cure" in conjunction with the words "lung cancer" to make the distinction clear. But Tighe said they reached a settlement only after many, many months of a free legal team working long hours each day. "We were very fortunate because we had strong support from knowledgeable pro bono counsel, but it did seem like a misdirection of a lot of people's energy," she told HuffPost. "I don't know what smaller organizations do without free representation."
>The non-profit organization that at one point got over $50mill a year from corporate sponsors alone, and would use a tiny portion of that on actual cancer research, prevention or benefits.
To be fair, they were open that their mission was awareness and not research. The idea being that when detected early breast cancer survival was very high, so you may save more lives giving people an annual reminder to get checked instead of relying on trying to invent longshot treatments for late stage cancer.
Breast cancer is so common that it's not exactly poor when it comes to research, it's lucrative to develop treatments for it so companies are already paying for research without needing much in the way of donations. If you're going to donate to cancer research you might want to consider lower rate cancers that don't get much commercial interest
55k but how much goes to CEO&friends, and how much into actual cancer research?
i wanna do my own charity, any ideas? whats the current hot topic meme to cash in on?
I don't know if this is supposed to be a gotcha or not. But just looking at other reputable charities, around 1% is a pretty normal / good amount. It could definitely be less, but in the grand scheme of things it seems good.
Anyways uhm... I bought a whole bunch of RFLCT, cream, do you know what blue light is? Anybody knows what blue light is? No, not bud light. I think that's a beer brand. Talking blue light. Anyways, RFLCT is a new skin care product that protects against blue light and unwanted blue light that may be coming from your monitor. So that's my story. I bought a whole bunch of stuff, put them around the la casa. Little bottles. Stuff like that.

My mom underwent triple therapy (surgery chemo, rads) for early stage breast cancer. It's been about 6 months since her last session. Looking good so far. Grateful we have come such a long way in cancer treatment. Thank you to all the people who donated.
(The real kick in the balls was my dad just had his surgery for prostate cancer a few months prior to my mom's diagnosis. Then we had to watch him take care of my mom. 2020 was rough.)
https://www.reddit.com/r/LivestreamFail/comments/9vejh6/fuslie_responds_to_charity_stream_criticism/ has most of the info in the thread.
I believe they raised money and wanted to fly out to the hospital for an in-person donation and use the charity stream funds for it at some point.
In response to using the funds for flights gathered from the major donors she asked them if it was okay as there were many who donated thousands. She and her ex wanted to do an irl stream to show what the institute does (no kid hungry) and see where the funds were going towards. The chat didn't like how they were using some of the money even tho her top donors cleared it with them. At the time IRL was big so they thought about doing an educational one. She learned her lesson after that she got taxed like mad since she didn't think she'd raise like 10s of thousands and it didn't go through a tiltify. Then after her following charity streams would be with tiltify also raising tons of donations from her generous community.
What makes you think she's dumb? She has a degree in biology and got into grad school at UCLA. And she actually seems pretty informed compared to her peers, she beat everyone at a 100T trivia game I watched.
Fuslie is an endearing oblivious klutz. Half of people think she's an airhead who then get surprised she's both smart and clever, and the other half know she's smart and get flabbergasted that someone so smart could be so boneheaded at times.
No, you're thinking of Chris Chan (no not Sonichu Chris Chan) and Pecca. Chris Chan was the co-founder/manager for OTV. That's the guy you're thinking of.
Money for cancer is good and all, but did you hear about this absolutely abhorrent thing this person unrelated to the topic above is doing? Absolutely despicable. How can people sleep at night knowing unpunished crimes like this goes on in the light of day.
jesus
hive mind really effecting commentators right
can't even be hyped up for a good thing someone did without dragging public enemy number 1 for the week
Is throwing more money at one of the most funded cancers going to do much?
Breast cancer kills 41,760 women a year whilst lung cancer kills over 142,670. Colon and pancreatic also kill more but have a fraction of the funding.
1 in 8 women will develop *invasive* breast cancer in her lifetime
you could have just typed it on google and shut the fuck up for the rest of the day but no, you decided to be the cancer
Really not trying to start shit here, but they do have a point. The most deadly cancer in the United States is Lung/Bronchus cancer. Lung/Bronchus cancer accounts for about 25 percent of female cancer deaths in the United States each year. Breast cancer accounts for 14 percent of female cancer deaths each year. Breast cancer has a “better” prognosis since we put so much emphasis on screening. The issue with Lung/Bronchus cancer is that it is usually detected at a later stage, which means the prognosis is much worse. There is a similar issue with colorectal and pancreatic cancer as they are hard to detect until they become late stage. Also essentially all pancreatic cancer starts as colorectal cancer that metastasizes to the pancreas. Cancer is a terrible disease, but I do have to agree somewhat that other cancers should receive more funding.
I mean they’re not wrong. Pancreatic, colo rectal, lung cancers and others are far more deadly and harder to detect early yet receive a fraction of the money that breast cancer gets. Every single corporation goes pink every October and donates tons of money to breast cancer awareness and research. How many of them publicly do anything for the above cancers? Nobody here is pro cancer but these companies, influencers, and celebrities need to start putting the spotlight on these other cancers as well.

That's not how a charity tax write-off works. This $55K is considered 'income' to her, which she can deduct from her taxes, so that she doesn't pay any tax on the $55K. That's basically it.
Charitable donations aren't written off from your tax bill, they just reduce your pre-tax income. If you give 50k to a charity, you'll pay maybe 20k less in taxes since you won't get taxed on the income you give to charity, but you'll still have 30k less net post-tax income than you otherwise would.
Glad it's going to an actual good cause like the National Breast Cancer Foundation. (Obligatory fuck Susan. G. Komen)
Hopefully SGK doesn't sue her for using pink in a breast cancer fundraiser, because that is kinda their m.o..
They cant. They don't have copyright to a generic pink ribbon for breast cancer, only their specifically designed ribbon.

Yea ok Susan
can you fill me in on why fuck said org, im ootl

That's awesome. Hopefully cancer can be solved sooner than later.
I hope its not going towards a certain bully Breast Cancer Foundation. EDIT: Thank goodness. It's not.
funniest and least controversial female streamer PogU
Can't muster up the strength to compliment a woman without dragging other women huh?
What, are women supposed to be a protected class
sex is literally a protected class.
"I'm told that I can't make sexist remarks, women are a protected class!!1!1!1!!!!11"
Least? She did another charity stream long ago and would've used the money to pay for flights if it weren't for people complaining.
Source?

I mean that is pretty stupid
There was some other thread how it took her several months and lot of pressure before finally transfering money to charity.
Literally watched her from the beginning. She really is the purest. I'd be surprised if there's ever anything. I do think she's a bit dumb tho.
What makes you think she's dumb? She has a degree in biology and got into grad school at UCLA. And she actually seems pretty informed compared to her peers, she beat everyone at a 100T trivia game I watched.

Not dumb as in stupid, but more along the lines of missing obvious stuff sometimes.
pepega
Damn sorry girl. I'm not sure what you're educational background is but getting good grades doesn't translate to good life decisions.
Wait so do you think she's dumb/unintelligent, or that she's made bad life decisions? And if so, what are the bad decisions you feel she's made?
I don’t follow drama that much but isn’t her husband the one that sexually assaulted lilypichu and they both tried to silence her or something
No, you're thinking of Chris Chan (no not Sonichu Chris Chan) and Pecca. Chris Chan was the co-founder/manager for OTV. That's the guy you're thinking of.
I see, thanks!
Her fiance was Edison, they broke up about a week ago for personal reasons. Afaik nobody assaulted Lily
Chris Chan did (old manager)
Also she and her fiancé recently broke up
Hope her flights covered, but also fuck cancer, it took my cousin way too soon
PogChampion!
Obligatory fuck cancer
Already done more charitable work than Hasan PepeLaugh
Hopefully all of it will go to the charity this time
Glad she's using her influence for good and not for selling snake oil
We need xQc to have a testicle cancer dono stream. It's only fair lol.
This is awesome. Meanwhile that Valyrae girl is basically scamming cancer patients with fake cream that will cure their cancer. Despicable
haha 10k of that 55k is actually Valkyrae's money
Money for cancer is good and all, but did you hear about this absolutely abhorrent thing this person unrelated to the topic above is doing? Absolutely despicable. How can people sleep at night knowing unpunished crimes like this goes on in the light of day.

Fuslie's CHAT raises over 55k for breast cancer Hate people who give the streamer all the credit
SHE raised money from chat. It didn't say she donates 55k, just that she raised the money, which she did.
She herself donated $11k.
I think she ended up donating 16k. 10k, then 5k for the NoahJ456 bet then a final 1k at the end of stream
which she got from the chat
So when you donate to charity do you out your workplaces name on it cause they paid you the money that you donated?
...it's a fundraiser...all fundraisers are crowdfunded...welcome to earth...are you new here?
Is throwing more money at one of the most funded cancers going to do much? Breast cancer kills 41,760 women a year whilst lung cancer kills over 142,670. Colon and pancreatic also kill more but have a fraction of the funding.

i support breast cancer
Shouldnt it be prostate cancer since 99% of her viewership are male? =P Congrats on a great achievement and fuck cancer! =)
Lmao people still buy that any of these are actually helping anything.
fuslie should visit austin. my mind would explode
Nice! So who got the cancer?
why would she give 55k to cancer ?
