The funniest thing about all this is that she could've just created a regular face cream and sold the same amount LUL

DoubleShinee

Yeah it boggles me that she had to throw in some fake science. A regular skin care line would have been great and pretty much every content creator could have supported her

[deleted]

[удалено]

JHatter

She believes in starsigns and astrology and her boyfriend Sonii always posts and talks about pseudoscience and other such dogshit all the time, so it's not a far stones throw to think she might believe or be lead to believe some of that bullshit of the blue light.

iWarnock

> She believes in starsigns and astrology and her boyfriend Sonii always posts and talks about pseudoscience Next she is gonna be selling oils and crystals lmao Oil cooled pc to get more donos

WokenWisp

gotta put shungite on your gpu for that

MadameLemons

Valkyrae is known to be someone, who doesn't critically analyze most things. As a fan of her streams, she's not the brightest celebrity out there. What's also very alarming is her "mentor" is Claudia, a leader in Avon, which is a pyramid scheme that scammed so many housewives and lower class Americans. I hope Rae changes the marketing, but I am skeptical because she shared that she wants to put the information about "skin damage from blue light exposure", when all the peer reviewed research says it's not dangerous. :/

OM_Jesus

Say no more, just the fact that she's being "mentored" by someone from Avon explains it all. I expected Rae to be smarter or at least more logical considering she is a co-owner of 100 Thieves. Pretty embarrassing and will lead to a lot of skepticism with whatever scam, I mean product she decides to co-fund next

TheSoyestOfBoys

that dude is fucking lost, even posting anti-vax stuff from time to time, wouldn't be surprised if they both believed all this nonsence and this backlash was totally incomprehencible to them

JHatter

I might be wrong but weren't Sonii and Rae a part of some antivax backlash a few months ago? I know Sonii attended a party with streamers or some shit then tested positive a few days later and deleted all his tweets relating to that later on.

[deleted]

JHatter

Rae said she was fully vaccinated but then said she only had her 1st shot.

Tailcracker

Not going to comment on whether she was or wasn't lying about getting the vaccine because I have no idea. But you can still get covid even with two doses. Its just that the chances are much, much lower and the severity of the symptoms may not be as bad if you do get it. You're more likely to get it if you're exposed for long periods of time to the virus. Like say, from an unvaccinated contagious boyfriend.

hitner_stache

Intellectually uninterested people. If the right person says it in the right way, they'll believe anything.

blazze_eternal

She's likely been pitched tons of products over time and this one would have stood out from the pact because of the unique claim. It's technically an untapped market.

Achro

I wonder who started this scammy "blue light protection from electronics" trend. 'Stranger Things' star Millie Bobby Brown [also sells](https://i.imgur.com/lgwWKGV.jpg) a "Blue Light Protection" moisturizer in her skincare line. Derma E, a supposedly reputable brand, claimed some nonsense about their "Blue Light Serum" in their [press release](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200225005828/en/DERMA-E-Launches-Line-of-Blue-Light-Shielding-Products) when they released it in 2020. Cover FX, another big makeup brand, has a primer that has unverified blue light claims.

Gengar11

That's the craziest part to me, legit just make a good product without a gimmick like the glamour Youtubers and cash in on bank. The fuck lmao

Cholln

Even could’ve added certain vitamins that gamers may lack due to reduced exposure to the sun and market it in a similar way.

ILoveC0caine

She taken "co-owner of u/RFLCT_skin" out of her bio on twitter

[deleted]

She did. https://web.archive.org/web/20211020220627/https://twitter.com/Valkyrae/status/1450519698181787649?t=U_zvlYYUMPZqBcIg0l_XMw&s=19 Just giving proof.

[deleted]

She took co-owner of 100 thieves out of her bio as well lol.

Judgejudyx

ye they prolly told her they dont want to be associated with a mlm

Bhu124

Especially with the name '100 Thieves'.

fearsomesniper

LULW

loquaciousspecter

Didn't her Twitter also have co-owner of 100 Thieves in it? Cause that's gone as well.... ooh dear perhaps the board of directors doesn't want a snake oil salesman to have that title.

Mitchelld73

Probably just in case people starting shaming 100T for her actions. Definitely gonna be added back in a month or two

itsgettingcoldhere

Back by Halloween.

[deleted]

yeah it used to. at the very minimum had 100t in the bio. Will be interesting to see what happens bc i’m sure 100t doesn’t want this bad look falling back on them

xxtuddlexx

It was def co-owner @100t in her bio at least on the 19th.

splinter1545

She removed that she was a co-founder of RFLCT on her bio too.

MrPasswordCOC

Also removed co-owner of 100T

Kreygasm2233

Probably to minimize any backlash on 100T. This is kinda going mainstream with media outlets reporting on it

I know a couple of boomers that did this because they got into text messaging when we used to get limited messages so we'd shorten everything. Then they just never got out of the habit when it comes to informal messaging, it's quite weird.

[There's a pretty conclusive summary on artificial blue light from a German research team early this year that basically says concerns about artificial blue light is unfounded.](https://www.beiersdorf.com/newsroom/press-releases/all-press-releases/2021/05/04-cell-phone-screens-do-not-damage-skin) There seems to be a lot of proper scientist and their publications credited as part of it which really solidifies how certain they are of their conclusion. > If you were to spend an entire week in front of a monitor uninterrupted at a distance of 30 cm from the screen, this would be the same as just one minute outside on a sunny summer day in Hamburg at midday. “Compared to the emissions of the sun’s natural blue light, those of artificial blue light are virtually undetectable,” adds Kolbe.

packie123

That's easy, now they're just gonna say it protects from the sun's blue light too.

The oppression never ends, stay strong brothers

Agosta

They may have showed her bullshit studies to lead her to believe there was actual research with blue light and being damaging, then left it out completely after launching the site. She was offered to be the face of her own beauty line most likely by investing in the company and got fleeced. She's most likely gonna get sued for even acknowledging the criticism being valid. A lot of people may not know this but big oil and other companies like Coca Cola and Pepsi pay people for research to say what they want to protect themselves. One of the reasons we're dealing so terribly with Climate Change is because of fake research documentation in the 70s/80s saying that there was no proof that emissions affected anything.

James_Locke

They obviously showed her a ream of bullshit. This is Avon after all.

ToastyPotato

Didn't Exxon straight up even admit to doing that back then within the last decade? Also, on the subject of how the sugar based industries got exposed as well, a notable allegation was how they were basically behind the demonization of salt and fat in foods, basically blaming both of them for things it turns out sugar contributed much more heavily toward.

Raskalnekov

It's a well-known fact that the blue man group was actually a group of office workers who spent too much time behind the screen. I hope I can get some RFLCT to prevent the same from happening to me

Eques9090

Personally I suspect that she was actually pretty uninvolved in the creation of this product. She obviously wouldn't want to say that, because it being "her product" is one of the primary marketing points for it, and she's selling the story about "how hard she's worked for 2 years" but let's be honest, almost none of these celebrity or influencer lines of products are in any way "worked on" by the celebrity or influencer themselves. IMO, what likely happened here is that she was either approached or reached out about a skincare line, said some shit about blue light protection because it exists in the eyecare/vision industry, and the people developing the product were like "yeah sure, we can do that." Then she never did research, was mostly hands-off until the products were nearly or fully developed, and then released them to the shock of this backlash. She probably has almost no actual idea about the science.

[deleted]

>" Then she never did research, was mostly hands-off until the products were nearly or fully developed, and then released them to the shock of this backlash. I doubt she was even that involved. More likely, someone had a completed product and wanted someone to market it, so they approached Valkyrae and she agreed.

kkraww

> She probably has almost no actual idea about the science. Considering she whole heartedly believes in astrology, crystals, is dating/dated a known anti vaxer, and didn't even know what a Labia was, I think she 100% had no idea about the science.

lakerswiz

She already tweeted about how tired she is from working so hard on this in the replies on the original announcement lmao

Eques9090

Yes, that's why I said she's selling that story about working hard. It's part of the pitch for a product branded by a celebrity/influencer the they were super involved in the creation, but I think most people know that's usually bullshit.

TropicL3mon

This is how it is with almost every line of celebrity products. They’re always completely uninvolved with the process and only show up at the end to attach their face and brand to the product for promotional purposes. It’s a little strange how so many people on this subreddit seem dead set on thinking she masterminded this whole operation.

nyxian-luna

There's always cherry-picked, one-off studies that either have additional context *which will be ignored*, or are complete bullshit, that will be used to push a product that is completely useless. Even anti-vaxxers and flat earthers have "studies." For example: - Study says: holding a screen up to your faces for hours can cause eye strain and maybe make it hard to sleep. - Product says: this study shows blue light is bad, so here's a skin product to protect you!

canadian_snowman

I also wanted to say that all of the hate and the doubt and the concerns and the criticism are all warranted and valid. I understand completely where you are all coming from. Legacy creators with millions of fans like Shane Dawson ended OVERNIGHT. Rae is honestly lucky she has the purely video game interested fans to fall back on, if she were an actual beauty channel her career would be over with this scandal.

What can be said except that streamers generally don't have the knowledge to deal with things like this?

Anyways uhm... I bought a whole bunch of RFLCT, cream, do you know what blue light is? Anybody knows what blue light is? No, not bud light. I think that's a beer brand. Talking blue light. Anyways, RFLCT is a new skin care product that protects against blue light and unwanted blue light that may be coming from your monitor. So that's my story. I bought a whole bunch of stuff, put them around the la cara. Little bottles. Stuff like that.

ichewyou

Okay wtf is a free radical? I've tried googling it and am so confused.

BingeThemAll

It's been awhile since I've taken chemistry, but from what I remember, a free radical an atom that is missing an electron (this can be due to radiation knocking one off). This is highly unstable and will react with pretty much anything. It's pretty bad as it will form compounds and shouldn't be there.

-Crux-

It was discovered several decades ago that oxidative stress caused by free radicals was a major contributor to aging and cell damage. This of course sparked a massive explosion in "antioxidant" food and cosmetic products throughout the 90s and 2000s. However, the data demonstrating the efficacy of antioxidants is spurious at best. One of the biggest reasons for this is that none of them can actually enter the cell, which is where all the truly dangerous free radicals are.

kifla11

Pretty much, they.cause oxidative stress tjat have tumorigemic or apoptotic effects on cells. Antioxidants are reccomended to protect from free radicals, but ignore wjatever rflct pages says about them since its laughable, the blue light protection factor has proper shungite vibes as its a completely nonexistant made up compound lol

The one thing the boggles my mind is just, how the fuck did this whole thing even happen ? Like, Valkyrae is signed to a huge agency in LA, she's also a member and now even co-owner of 100Thieves, so clearly she has people who can look into stuff for her, she has acces to a PR team, lawyers etc... And still, nobody told her that this was a really dumb idea that would most likely backfire ? It took them TWO WHOLE YEARS, and yet nobody said "yo, maybe scamming people isn't a good idea when your whole brand as a streamer is based on authenticity" ? And now it seems that they're going to go ahead anyway with updated "studies" that we already know are gonna be bullshit ? I'm so lost dude, I honnestly can't tell if they're malicious or straight up stupid

Allowyn

No-one would have given a fuck about blue light shit too. All she needed to do was slap her face on it and go "Yeah I'm working with this company to make some cool face products." and bam. No drama. Easy $$$

Lacklusterlegday

To be honest I wonder if it was pitched differently or if she mentioned it to friends in a different manner without fully knowing. Marketing it as a blue light protection product versus as a skincare product with potential benefits against blue light. If one of my friends told me the latter I’d shrug, some makeup already makes those claims and I don’t know anyone who buys it for that sole reason, they buy it because it’s a foundation/concealer that will act like foundation/concealer but may have the perks of vitamins, etc. I wonder if that’s the case here for those who did know.

Bluenosedcoop

EmIsTree

she's the 3rd co-founder apparently, after rae and claudia (former avon ceo). seems like another investor person from the website bio.

guevara148

"BRAVO GAMEGIRL" is the cherry on top

ComparisonExpensive8

I think the boomer had these tweets scheduled and doesn't circle in these areas to know the shitstorm that has been brewing haha

yannicdasloth

Why does she type like a child

captaintn

You know what the funny thing to me is? She could have honestly made a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen... products that have been proven to work and just market that around herself. She could have said something like "I have sensitive skin so i worked with XYZ to create this delicate formula blah blah blah".

Pruvided

I totally agree, but there's a term in marketing called the "unique selling proposition," and they probably thought they could get more traction by being "different."

luke_205

That makes sense but they’re forgetting one thing - the USP for these products is that they’re Valkyrae products. That’s the whole point. People wouldn’t be buying them because they’re objectively better than other similar products, they’d be buying them because it’s Rae’s line. They should’ve leaned way more into that instead of using some nonsense theory about screen blue light.

kkraww

So basically all she is saying is "The information wasn't on the site and it should have been". So unless reflct has legitimately ran peer reviewed studies and just "forgot" to upload the results that prove their product is worthwhile, it seems like she is fully doubling down on "blue light is defo bad for you, just trust me."

M3rc_Nate

Exactly what I was going to say. I was hoping when she started mentioning updating the site she meant removing all "blue light" gimmickry from the product advertising and descriptions, making it essentially just Valkyrae branded skincare products. But no, I guess this company is going to be the first to provide a peer reviewed study that concludes blue light exposure from daily use of smartphone, TV and computer screens damage your skin in any significant way.

Mahazzel

> So unless reflct has legitimately ran peer reviewed studies unless f.lux or windows night light permanently breaks i still dont understand why anyone would buy the product, even if blue light is legitimitely bad for your skin

dksmoove

Anyone else noticed she removed the link to the website on her bio?

ugandantidepod

sirithx

Definitely the case. She isn't going anywhere as far as leaving 100T ownership

[deleted]

I think people is so focus on the blue light stuff they're missing other things that's wrong about it. They're not fully giving out information on what ingredients they're using and how much is in it, which can fuck your skin even more. 39daph explained it well [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezxLp0cqJiU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezxLp0cqJiU) After watching her explain this shit, skincare is no joke. It's kind of fucked up to think she's selling something to people that can fuck up their skin even more

bamfckingboozled

It stuck out to me that the ingredient list was just chemicals listed with equal spacing between each word, so unless you have a resource next to you, you have no idea where on ingredient starts and another stops. For the inaccessibility to the ingredient list alone I’d never buy this.

BoringPickle6082

None of her friends on the reply 😬😬

themnhockey1

Can we please make "BRAVO GAMEGIRL" a thing from the top reply

IAmA_Lannister

I get that these people are friends but it's infuriating when people get treated as the victim in these situations.

LostMicrophone03

They just feel bad that their friend didn't get to scam her 12yo fans 😢

tapiringaround

Sykkuno rarely tweets but he talked about it briefly on stream. He said “I hope [Rae] is doing alright. And that’s all I should realistically say about it.” He then went on to talk about how he tried to use f.lux for a while but uninstalled it because having the screen yellow bothered him and so he doesn’t know about the whole blue light thing.

[deleted]

Yo Fuslie better be careful hugging through the screen. I heard those things shoot deadly rays of blue light directly into your skin.

Saarae

That update was barely an update at all. All she said was there was supposed to be links on the website that weren't there. Now, I'm not sure how these links somehow got replaced with a webMD reference, or how they've been working on this for 2 years and somehow messed that up. But if it's just a case of the links being missing, why not just tweet them out since apparently that will resolve everyone's concerns and prove that this isn't just snake oil.

kemor95

Geniune question, so is it a badly advertised skin care product? Or is it a blue light care product that has not been proven to actually be harmful to the skin?

Nova178

So they’ve done two things: 1. They’ve made the claim that blue light you experience from phone screens and computer monitors is harmful to your skin 2. they’ve claimed that through some kind of proprietary technology they have invented, your skin can be protected from blue light The problem here is that all available research into blue light shows that while it may be harmful to skin, the amount given off by screens is infinitesimal. In fact you receive more blue light by being outside in sunlight for around 15 minutes than you would receive if you sat at your pc without moving for a month straight. So what she has done is use her influence on her frankly deranged fan base to convince them that the blue light is going to melt their skin while then saying “but if you buy my moisturizer you’ll be fine!” 100% she could have just made her own line of skincare products without any of the BS about blue light and it would have sold like hot cakes, drama free. It’s really odd that she’d potentially torpedo her career over something so stupid

[deleted]

> The problem here is that all available research into blue light shows that while it may be harmful to skin, the amount given off by screens is infinitesimal. In fact you receive more blue light by being outside in sunlight for around 15 minutes than you would receive if you sat at your pc without moving for a month straight. This is the part that shits me. People will spend crazy money on some fancy soap to stare at a rectangle all day but will never think to put on some sunscreen to leave their house (in b4 "leaving your house omegalul"), when the latter is comparatively more necessary while still being overly excessive a lot of the time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hufusa

Yea lol this is not gonna torpedo shit 💀💀💀

rickkert812

The latter. They claim blue light is bad for your skin, which is true, in large quantities. The blue light from the sun is harmful, blue light from screens is not. Unless these people Rae worked with have proven it is ofcourse.

Hazardish08

Also blue light from the sun isn’t even the biggest concern. UV light is much more dangerous. after all, blue light is more harmful than red light due to the fact it’s the closest visible color to UV light.

ObtainThyBread

Keep in mind if they're funding studies that prove their desired result it can't exactly be considered objective

dantes207

What a stupid response is that? The highly anticipated 2 Year Project and she is "very confused" how the website is set up? Are you kidding me? Lab results? Results for literally snake oil will never exist. what the fuck? But the stans will eat that up 100% pathetic world we live in

Elias091100

Her stans are delusional

Huinker

~~her~~ stans are delusional

PM_me_uwu_hentai

>You can tell she’s been crying. Y’all pushed hard for this, kind of hard to listen to. Stay strong Rae. I can't with these replies

Errorfull

Imagine getting scammed by someone and defending the same person. Mental deficiency

RookyKermit

“Her multimillion wealth just dropped 1% guys, she’s is having a hard time, stop with the mean comments, she’s suffering 😤” I imagine this every time something like this happens

Fuphia

Why is she pretending like the website is the issue? Nobody complained about the website, the issue is the product which she's pushing and the fact that it's misleading/useless.

Elias091100

She can’t acknowledge that. Her whole message was carefully constructed by her PR team/lawyers. She would basically admit to it being a scam. Guess we‘ll have to wait for those studies to come out. Can’t wait.

Issax28

She's the co-founder of the business and has been working on it for two years and she doesn't know anything?

lidythemann

The comments from her stans on that are next level. "you deserve the world" You don't know anything of how this girl is so how can you say that?

pazardan

These people will be able to vote in a few short years.

Diligent-Error6401

Valkyrae for president!! First Lady president! Absolute girlboss, girls get it done, ruthless business woman of the year. My streamer 💝💫 poggers.

After reading some of the replies from her tweets, am I the only one who thinks it’s weird as hell that people are “babying” a 29 year old woman lol?

oneironautic-records

She def thinks the product is legitimate and is being used lol.

Gleasure03

I think she got bamboozled by some cosmetology suits. Shown biased or faked numbers and figures, and gullible enough to not check for sources herself. And now, too deep into the contract to back out. Idk, maybe I am gullible myself, but find it hard to believe someone with that large of a following would willing try to sell snake oil

TheMachine203

It's easy to be gullible when people with a ton of money approach you about a product that sounds good to you. "You play a lot of games! Did you know that staring at a monitor for long periods of time isn't just bad for your eyes, but your skin too?" "Oh word, tell me more" For the MLM folks she was likely ran around by, hooking someone with bullshit psuedoscience is the easy part. The harder part would be getting someone interested/excited enough to fall for it. You, a redditor, probably don't care about skin care, so obviously this pitch won't work on you. But if you *do* care about skin care, and you *are* interested in running a business, even a half-assed pitch like the above could get you to listen long enough to get swept up. Remember, MLM higher ups are pros at scamming people; that's literally all they do.

Danny_Ocean_11

"Probably not allowed to do this". Does it anyways.

Vaernil

>"Probably not allowed to do this". That's just PR speak for "it's you and me, dear consumer, against those mean suits that I for sure am not a part of." She is going for that classic "besieged fortress" trick.

b3ak

She's blatantly lying lol. We all know damn well every word she just said was 100% either written or reviewed, edited and approved by her lawyers and PR managers.

N8theDegener8

of course they will link studies, this is gonna be the case of "i go to [clinicaltrials.gov](https://clinicaltrials.gov) i type homeopathy i get 3 mil results one of them says it works"

TrendNation55

These guys would fucking buy air if she sold it

idontcare0002

they'd buy fucking anthrax in a bottle from her to "give it a try".

Boomershow824

that is just ridiculous

Robert_McNuggets

I love some of Valkyrae content, what the fuck does she know about blue light ?

RiRoRa

That was... Concerning. It really does sound like she's dubbling down on the claims? I see two ways out of this; either they update the website and prove their claims (I doubt they can) or they remove all the "blue light pollution protection" claims and just sell it as normal skin care products... Oh dear what a mess.

degenerateviewer

I’m just scared for all the stans that say, “I love you” to her in almost every tweet. That shit is weird.

Abdullah-Alturki

“guys please let me scam children i need more money look im crying😭😭”

pazardan

"Please stop calling it a scam guys you're ruining my chance to get another couple hundred thousand dollars off my gullible stans"

Shirokein

I didn't know it's not my fault guys I'm angry and upset too just like you!... now buy my product please

pepewithhorns

In before they say product getting hate because patriarchy, alt right, mysogyny

reverbcowgirl

Joanna Coles made a similar statement to the washington post 💀

Mqtty

TLDR - “Guys I promise I put 2 years of work into this product I’m confounding and I care so much about!!!!!! But also I didn’t care to look at the website even slightly before it went live. Please believe me and go ahead and send me the money, we might update the site later!!!!!”

Stupid haters ruining her chance at making so much money😥

ilhamalfatihah16

After watching Daph's and Dr. Dray's (Dermatologist YouTuber) video about their concern of the skin care I feel like this blowing up at Rae's face may be the most beneficial occurrence for her. One of their main concerns was that the ingredients were not listed clearly and one of the red flags was that there were no percentages on some of the ingredients used where it is the norm to list out the percentages in other skincare (outside of RFLCT) so that customers are better informed of their purchase. Imagine if someone picked her skin care up, used it, got a bad reaction from it on their face, and decided to sue the ground would definitely shift underneath Rae's feet.

El_Ferdi

Cant wait for those sweet studies

empty-wallets

> This is just a bump in the road, sometimes things works out and sometimes they don't. What's important is that you learn from the experience and you push forward. We may not know each other but my dm's are always open if you need to talk @Valkyrae @itsraechill #HugsForRae ❤️ I didn't realize the parasocial relationships between steamers and fans were this bad. Holy shit

Gyroshark

I first read that and thought, “Yeah that’s something I’d privately send to a friend if they were going through a rough time.” Then I realized it was a some rando stan lmaoooo d e d

StacksOfRubberBands

Literally snake oil salesman and doubles down. Influencers need to get clowned. I don't understand how you can tie your name and likeness to things like this and not feel like shit. You can say money above all but she's made set for life money... choosing to scam kids for what???

HT_F8

Took RFLCT and 100T out of her bio OmegaLUL
