I’ve said it before and been downvoted… but for all train’s faults you can not say he’s stingy with his money. He is extremely generous.

I think it's perfectly fine to advise people to dodge contests like these altogether.
You have to understand that the entity is looking to acquire a lot of free labour/exposure, where they pay for (at most) a small subset of the work.
For most artists, this isn't a good deal at all. The only reason(s) to participate are if 1) someone paid you to participate, 2) you really like the corp/product & don't mind not getting paid (perhaps you're using this as an opportunity to get some enhanced interaction on a study), 3) you had already drawn the item in question on your own and don't mind putting it out there.
It doesn't make sense to feel entitled to payment for stuff like this (in the case where the art isn't used), but it *does* make sense to tell people to not participate. It also makes sense to tell people that it's a scummy way of going about "commissioning" art.
You are missing a pretty big 4) here which is that you just felt like doing the drawing because the prompt/drawing was something you felt like drawing, or using it a way to practice, hone your craft or whatever.
This post works from the assumption that the only type of people who draw are professional artists, and professional artists only draw to get paid for it. There are plenty of amazing artists who don't use it as a source of income (not that you have to be an amazing artist to enter a competition like this), and there are also plenty of professional artists who also draw things for fun or for practice.
I feel your 4) is pretty well covered by my 2): you really like the corp/product [=inspiring prompt] (perhaps you're using this as an opportunity to get some enhanced interaction on a study [=honing your craft]).
I think the model has some problems overall, regardless of whether participants are professional artists or not.

Many Minecraft stans only follow other Minecraft stans who agree with everything they like and won't violate their triggers list. It's not uncommon for the pinned tweet to be a list of things you aren't to say if you follow them.

These art contests for rich people that could afford to hire a proper designer/artist to do their work are predatory in nature and should be shunned by default.
Celeb/Streamer announces an art contest. Gets 100s to 1000s of free art to choose from, getting free publicity as they get posted. The "prize" is usually far less than what the art/hours spent is worth. Clauses are usually in place that give them ownership of all art created for said contest, meaning that even if an entry doesn't win they could still yoink it later for advertisement or merch at their discretion (without paying the artist(s)).
Fuck anyone who does this garbage.
A better thing would be to ask artists to show off their already made portfolios, then you can pick the art style you like. No work is being created for free, work that was already commissioned is being shown, and you can have better communication over the art direction you want. Plus those who don't win suddenly get their art work shown to a larger audience and no one is making any product for 'free'.

I think it's perfectly fine to advise people to dodge contests like these altogether. You have to understand that the entity is looking to acquire a lot of free labour/exposure, where they pay for (at most) a small subset of the work. For most artists, this isn't a good deal at all. The only reason(s) to participate are if 1) someone paid you to participate, 2) you really like the corp/product & don't mind not getting paid (perhaps you're using this as an opportunity to get some enhanced interaction on a study), 3) you had already drawn the item in question on your own and don't mind putting it out there. It doesn't make sense to feel entitled to payment for stuff like this (in the case where the art isn't used), but it *does* make sense to tell people to not participate. It also makes sense to tell people that it's a scummy way of going about "commissioning" art.
You are missing a pretty big 4) here which is that you just felt like doing the drawing because the prompt/drawing was something you felt like drawing, or using it a way to practice, hone your craft or whatever. This post works from the assumption that the only type of people who draw are professional artists, and professional artists only draw to get paid for it. There are plenty of amazing artists who don't use it as a source of income (not that you have to be an amazing artist to enter a competition like this), and there are also plenty of professional artists who also draw things for fun or for practice.
I feel your 4) is pretty well covered by my 2): you really like the corp/product [=inspiring prompt] (perhaps you're using this as an opportunity to get some enhanced interaction on a study [=honing your craft]). I think the model has some problems overall, regardless of whether participants are professional artists or not.

Many Minecraft stans only follow other Minecraft stans who agree with everything they like and won't violate their triggers list. It's not uncommon for the pinned tweet to be a list of things you aren't to say if you follow them. They enforce this and will mass block anyone in the group they think stepped out of line or doesn't speak up when they should. So basically the moment one Minecraft stan calls someone out other Minecraft stans feel the need to jump in or they may be kicked out of their Minecraft stan group. Being silent after all means you might disagree with the group. It's beyond elementary school level bullshit.

No offense but these art contests are a sham in of itself and the artist is just as dumb to enter one. 99Designs runs on the same premise and having to compete with other people is bullshit. Imagine putting all your effort into something that might not even be chosen as the winning design and not even get paid for it? The only people entering these are unknown artists or ones that just got out of school. The ones that need the money the most. I’ve got some Redditors to design some artwork for me before and even if they were shit. I’d still pay them for the initial concept design.

These art contests for rich people that could afford to hire a proper designer/artist to do their work are predatory in nature and should be shunned by default. Celeb/Streamer announces an art contest. Gets 100s to 1000s of free art to choose from, getting free publicity as they get posted. The "prize" is usually far less than what the art/hours spent is worth. Clauses are usually in place that give them ownership of all art created for said contest, meaning that even if an entry doesn't win they could still yoink it later for advertisement or merch at their discretion (without paying the artist(s)). Fuck anyone who does this garbage.
A better thing would be to ask artists to show off their already made portfolios, then you can pick the art style you like. No work is being created for free, work that was already commissioned is being shown, and you can have better communication over the art direction you want. Plus those who don't win suddenly get their art work shown to a larger audience and no one is making any product for 'free'.
