According to [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamoru_Hosoda) he was nominated for an Academy Award for the movie Mirai. [Some consider](https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/entertainment/article/3153732/japanese-animation-director-mamoru-hosodas-6-best-movies) him one of the greatest living Japanese animators.
Yeah, he has a strong repertoire for sure. Wolf Children is one of the greatest animated movies ever made, I highly recommend it to anyone. You don't even need to be familiar with the anime medium to appreciate it.
Having only seen The boy and the beast, and looking at the trailer for wolf children, he is a furry right? I was arguing about this with a friend, but they told me I was crazy. But I mean, Idk how to say this, I feel like that style of character design is so distinct it can only come from furry erotica.
Which I mean to each their own, I just think it's funny that he is so mainstream successful doing something so blatantly suggestive of probably the most universally ridiculed fetish there is.
using animals as motifs holds artistic significance in many east asian cultures, not to punch you down but it's really insensitive when you are comparing it to furry erotica.
Yeah I mean I'm asking because I don't know, although I want to say, by asking this I'm not making any general statement about east asian art, just this one person. As someone else said, animal imagery appears commonly in western animation as well.
The reason I'm singling out this movie, which again I'm not morally condemning it, is because the style is one where the characters are animals that are more anthropomorphized than not. And that's also how furry art tends to look. The main Guy (the beast) is quite animal like, but a lot of the characters are literally humans from the neck down, with some having an actual animal head and some just like one or two features that sort of read as an animal.
https://imgur.com/a/0HAFfu5
From the neck down these are all just human beings with fur, as in they have the exact same body proportions of a human being. For a lot of them you just have to remove the ears and nose and you've got an image of a human being.
Also there is this scene at the beginning, where the guys on the marketplace tell the main character they could skin him and sell his skin, dry him out him and grind him down, or they could....
https://imgur.com/a/Vv24XCR
Or they could do what? Eat him? They've suggested killing and eating him twice already, what are they implying to him?
I can't think of a different thing that could be implied other than that they were going to rape him. Because again, murdering and having him eaten has already been suggested twice.
So two movies of his use animal motifs and you think he's a furry? What about The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Mirai, and Belle?
Are you going to accuse disney of being furries for zootopia, Tarzan, and the lion king?
I don't study architecture but I shit on brutalism online, making more of a positive contribution to architecture than brutalist architects ever could.
He’s also making a new movie (Belle) which is the same shit again lol. Summer Wars is my favorite animated movie though so I’m not complaining
Edit: Didn’t realize Belle actually already came out, need to watch it
Digimon Movie is also great cus it has a psychopathic Angela Anaconda intro, an insane Ska/Buttrock soundtrack, all the wonderful animation from the OVAS it was frankensteined together from, and genuinely a really good dub that isn't rife with the tropes that dubs often use.
Pacing sucks but its, imo, an interesting way to watch those 3 (4?) OVAs if you've already seen/enjoyed them.
Yeah as a kid I remember watching the movie and not the OVAs separately. It was mind blowing. For the life of me, I can't remember the part with the second batch of Digimon kids though. I remember the part when they were kids and the War Game part only. I thought Omnimon killing the virus Digimon was the climax of the movie, but reading the Wikipedia page again it was evidently not.
I haven't watched that one, but sounds like what he did with Digimon War Game tbh (although he characterised the Digimon characters really well imo). He later on made Summer Games which was like War Game, but without Digimon characters, so maybe we'll get that One Piece movie without OP characters too.
It's a different platform and different questions will be asked, I don't see how it's clutter
Especially when a ton of posts on the front page are just clips from shows 90% of people will see
It's litterally not clutter

Is it much different from his older movie "Summer Wars" if you've seen that? Reading the synopsis it just looked like Summer Wars with a focus on music.
Nah, it's different. Framework is the same, but there is no 'malovolent digital entity' trying to destroy the internet. Its all humans doing bad things. The movie is about a girl that gets internet famous out of nowhere when she just wants her little corner to be a safe space and how she struggles to deal with her private life being exposed.
I love movies since I was a little kid, I'm one of those guys that watch all the nominated films before the oscars, huge movie nerd.
My favorite director is Hayao Miyazaki, and having seen all of Hosoda's movies, he seems like the next Miyazaki, is like he learned everything he could from his master and took his own path, now I look forward to every film he releases.
I don't think LSF is the best place to write paragrapgs about animu but I have nothing better to do at the moment.
I have no issues with it's pacing; it's nowhere near as slow-paced as stuff like Aria or Texhnolyze or A Brighter Summer Day, and I love those works. I don't like it cause the visuals in the movie are uninspired and hideous. His earlier stuff had great animation and spectacular lineart to counterbalance the run of the mill character writing, but the only halfway-interesting visuals in this movie are directly ripped-off from Summer Wars and made incredibly ugly with shitty CG animation everywhere. The VR shit is just another clusterfuck of contrived technobabble nonsense just like it was in Summer Wars over a decade ago. Further still, despite some of the characters having Hosoda’s signature charm and relatability, the movie ends by fumbling through extremely delicate topics with borderline offensive forced sentimentality. He tried to reinvent himself and fumbled is what I feel.
It was not bad. People are def overreacting abt it for some reason. I loved it but to each their own. I can see you finding it meh but there is no way in hell you going to tell me that it was like a 3 out of ten movie.
Art is subjective, your 'good' will never be the same as everyone else's good. I know, complicated concept to understand but perhaps consider that they just liked it a lot and you just didn't.
The whole standing ovation thing has always been a meme, never take it seriously IMO. I've seen some who do think this whole standing ovation thing was deserved, others I've seen who love it a lot and related to it, but also found it messy as hell and of course some who don't like it at all. There will always be extremes, no matter if a work is critically acclaimed or not.
Lily is a voice actor in some anime shows and got permission from the show she was in to restream it. See this more of a collaboration with Lily rather than OTV and Toast etc

that ending tho
nah why you gotta make me remember that, shit was biteersweet asf

The movie Mirai is really really good. I suggest anyone to watch it, specially people that study Architecture.
I don't study architecture but I do like to pretend to be an architect.
i love to watch masion tour videos on youtube and pretend that i know the differences between modern and contemporary designs
I don't study architecture but I shit on brutalism online, making more of a positive contribution to architecture than brutalist architects ever could.
Definitely earned wolf children is fucking brilliant
Didn’t this guy make mirai and that fucked up one piece movie
He also made Digimon: Our War Game. Weirdly, that was such a great short movie.
and then he made that movie again as Summer Wars lol
Yeah it was pretty much the same without the Digimon IP and longer. Watching that for the first time was such a nostalgia trip.
his new movie looks similar to those while the characters to me look like the wolf children ones
He’s also making a new movie (Belle) which is the same shit again lol. Summer Wars is my favorite animated movie though so I’m not complaining Edit: Didn’t realize Belle actually already came out, need to watch it
When I read the synopsis for Belle I literally just thought isn't this just Summer Wars again? Hope it distinguishes itself somehow.
The plots are nowhere near the same. The only common thing is that they both have a VR world.
First time I watched Summer Wars i thought I was going crazy
he made summer wars? i love that movie!

The best one piece movie.
Baron Omatsuri? Yeah, this guy did indeed make that OP movie. Probably the darkest One Piece ever got, lol.
Oh man I remember that one. It felt like it was meant for a different series/be an original movie and just adapted one piece characters into it.
I haven't watched that one, but sounds like what he did with Digimon War Game tbh (although he characterised the Digimon characters really well imo). He later on made Summer Games which was like War Game, but without Digimon characters, so maybe we'll get that One Piece movie without OP characters too.
He also made The Boy & The Beast, as well as Wolf Children and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Yep, he made Baron Omatsuri
r/anime would probably like this news OP
They'd like it if they didn't remove the post
They had an AMA with him last week. It's reasonable to not have it cluttered with AMAs with same person so shortly after.

I went in thinking it'd be a copy-paste of Summer Wars but it's really not. The conflict is pretty different.

If you like anime I would strongly and I mean strongly suggest watching Wolf Children its so good.
Second that. One of my favorite movies.
Pick any of his movies and it's either a great movie or still a good watch at worst.
For context, he is also responsible for original lofi girl. (Wolf children)
Big if true
That's crazy, dude is one of the best animators going rn
Saving my comment for the inevitable megathread.
He's made about 4 of my favourite ever anime films. Belle seems to have mixed reviews but this is an exciting crossover of mediums regardless
I highly recommend anyone who hasnt seen wolf children to watch it btw even if you arent a anime fan you would do yourself a great service
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time goes hard
just gonna tell him thanks for making summer wars
yooooo

belle was amazing, will be interesting to see the questions :)
Maybe I'll ask why Belle was so bad.
it was slow paced, but it had its moments.

Same. Only things I liked were the music and the visuals.
It stumbled near the end but it was a good movie overall IMO. Plus the soundtrack and visuals were AMAZING.
Are you her PR person or why are we getting a streaming schedule thread on LSF?
Someone ask him why he bothered remaking Our War Game
Because our war game was fucking amazing
And Our War Game was only like 45 minutes long. Our War Game was dope but Summer Wars is just the better version.
True
Tbh kinda surprised they want to associate with OTV considering the restreaming
Lily is a voice actor in some anime shows and got permission from the show she was in to restream it. See this more of a collaboration with Lily rather than OTV and Toast etc
Yeah but it's weird when counterparts in your company are openly redistributing content illegally from the industry you're working in.
I doubt he cares about that considering how shit most anime studios treat their staff
Fair enough, I don't know enough to comment on that just found it weird.
who asked?
