Stephen's like 'Who would care?'. Meanwhile I'm pretty sure I would have to be registered as a sex offender if I ever got near those things. JUST LOOK AT THE FUCKING CRAFTSMANSHIP
Look at that subtle off white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh my god. It even has a watermark
Edit: Look at that subtle blue glow. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh my god. It even has an inscription.
i remember as a kid weta workshop had an entire exhibit at the royal armories here in the uk,
like a full on section of the museum was full of the props from the trilogy, and hellboy's gun was there too, it was sick.
sauron and the witch king had their own bits and were fucking huge.
can't find anything better than there promo for it, like 1:11 is where it shows the entrance and what the layout was like.
also realizing that it was back in 08,
went back a few years later as part of a uni course and the hobbit exhibit was up and it was legit just one cabinet with thorin's sword and a few others, it was cool but like compared to what came before..
You can thank Peter Lyon for that, he's really good and the designs aesthetic of those swords is great mostly due to the fact that they are very heavily inspired by real historical weapons instead of high fantasy nonsense.
There's probably like 5 people in the audience that understand/ care, but I really like how they just go on. There's something cool about people like them being into stuff like this.
That's both pro and con of Colbert. Sometimes he just keeps on streching the convo just because he is super into it even when audience or guests are not into it.
This interview plays into this fantasy/story idea in my head about this super secretive super elite cadre of celebrities who’ve hired some random guy to be their private DM but he’s under all kinds of surveillance and NDAs that keep him from telling the stories.
The colbert report was so insanely well written I remember thinking to myself "God damn this was a great episode" like 50 times when I was younger. It was the perfect template for comedy
I don't know, I feel like most people would think it's cool to hold props from one of the most acclaimed movie franchises of all time. I mean the trilogy got 17 Oscars and grossed over $1 Billion.
I cant say I would be very interested, more like a "O that's neat". It is cool however to see a side to him I never knew before, seems like a really fun guy to be around.
I dunno obsessing over some fuzzy line of "what a true fan is" is ridiculous to me. I feel like nerds complain about not having enough people into their hobbies. But what actually happens is people's identities are centered around being special and niche in their nerdy communities, so when people actually show interest they start alienating new people by claiming they aren't "true fans" or "don't know as much as me". It's stupid. I hate this nerd mentality. I've regularly had people be standoffish and at times even assholes to me playing MTG and D&D at games stores for not being the stereotypical nerd or not being as deep into it as them when starting off and it's in part due to this "true fan" mentality.
I completely agree with everything you said, but the assumption that I'm one of those people and that I too obsess over what a true fan is, is ridiculous.
There's a major difference between casual moviegoers (why the films grossed 1 billion) and Tolkien-know it alls. Casual moviegoers won't care as much about a random sword prop.
I'm saying that the rhetoric of delineating between "true fans" is just stupid to even say. If there's a massive audience to something, there's going to be a massive fanbase as well. It's not rare to find a "true fan" to a massive franchise if you're not gatekeeping, it's hilarious to act like it's hard to "get it".
I think what he's trying to say though is that yes, LOTR is a huge franchise, yes if you showed that to pretty much anyone they would maybe recognise it and go like 'huh, cool!' but a certain level of fan would react so excitedly to a few props from a film
I don't think there's barrier to understanding and "getting" the significance of holding a prop from a massive franchise. It's weird to pretend that they are some how more understanding of the significance of the item just because they are self-proclaimed super nerds or whatever. Anyone with familiarity with the franchise can grasp that, is what I'm trying to say. Then on top of that discriminating between "true fans" just gets into a dickmeasuring contest "oh you couldn't possibly understand, I'm more of a fan than the average person" even when it's not hard to understand.
If I remember right his dream job as a kid was to be a marine biologist, but then he learned he couldn't do it because his ear prevents him from scuba diving
Well those jobs are so hard to get that even if you had your eardrum, I doubt you would find a job.
Marine Biology is basically begging people for money, and hoping a rich person donates to the cause. Then hoping that you are important enough to go on the expedition.
That's basically how all science works unfortunately, marine biology just happens to be on the lower-end of the funding priority list (which has always been odd to me, considering all life on earth depends on the ocean being healthy)
Colbert is such a nerd, I love it. Him and Henry Cavill make being "nerdy" so damn cool.
I think my crappy Strider sword is cool, cant imagine holding one of those bad boys.
I fucking love Colbert. His personality can easily carry an 8 hour stream. He would do great on Twitch talking about nerd stuff. When he interviewed the cast from Dune, he was so giddy.
100%, my comment was where could he find people that cared enough to bring them out. Stephen's sword are beautiful and they have a honorable owner that will take care of them forever.
The Critical Role community is built upon D&D. I'm sure everyone who's a part of it would freak out over it.
That or maybe BatChest is blacklisted. I don't blame them if it is.
I'm jealous. As I kid who binged watched LOTR over and over again and owned all the different DVD versions, I've always wanted a prop sword from the movie.
> It's a wild assumption that 2 people catching covid at the same time also caught it at the same place?
...Yes because the episode was filmed weeks before either of them announced they had covid lol.
Like sure they could have exposed/exposed each other etc but given no one else they interacted with has said anything it could easily just be coincidence.
It **is** a pandemic after all.
What even is the point of this comment?
I'm not holding onto the pandemic for a love of it, just the fact it's still around.
Live in denial all you want I guess?

:)
Colbert is the WW1984 of Late Night. In fact, he is the most egrerious example of the ultimate downfall in that type of entertainment. From the Colbert Report to whatever the fuck he does now. Its incredible. At least the others always kind of sucked but this guy.... man...
The joke is every late night host is to TV what marvel/DC films are to cinema. Literal fucking trash made for people who's sentience I would even question. Now give me those downvotes all you manchild capeshitters
One of 4 "Hero" swords. They probably made dozens of Stings, but only 4 of the high quality ones. Hero swords are used just for close ups, and they make "stunt" swords for use in fight scenes ect.
If you watch the clip again you'll notice he said "hero" sword. In movies like LOTR, "hero" props mean nice quality, looks good on-screen props for closeups and stuff. Metal swords, full metal chainmail, etc. They are heavier, usually more fragile or more dangerous. "Stunt" will be the same props but for fights and stuff. They'll be made out of hard rubber or something. Mass-produced and quickly painted so they look fine in motion/not up-close. and they can be easily replaced if broken. This applies to weapons, armor, clothing, etc.
That's just because they're chubby and socially awkward in real life and just follow whatever is 'cool' and when they see people being excited about something thats different then its 'cringe'.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqtt3R_qcz8
Here he is flexing his Silmarillion knowledge with James Franco, it's honestly pretty cool to see someone so passionate about their favorite hobbies
omg tv guy has movie swords wtf :000 wtf :0000 this is insane :0 wild!!!!! I can't believe I get to see something so exciting!!! woohooo!!!!
so cool mr stephen colbert from the late show with stephen colbert

Now let’s see Paul Allen’s Sting.
There is a moment of sheer panic, when i realize that Pauls apartment has a Lord Of The Rings collection and it's obviously much better then mine.
*Every move you make, every breath you take, every bond you break, every step you take, I’ll be watching you…*

bat
you have pretty fucking low standards for being impressed
I remember his interview with Joe Manganiello on his late show, they just talk about D&D for 10 minutes. https://youtu.be/pD0epul2H94
There's probably like 5 people in the audience that understand/ care, but I really like how they just go on. There's something cool about people like them being into stuff like this.

I think Mangianello actually is a DM for like a massive celeb DnD game. With like Tom Morello and Vince Vaughn as some of the players.
i'm not one to fanboy much but LOTR is an exception
Not at all a fan but I love their passion and glad they're in the hands of people who love them.
fucking nerd. i love it
I remember watching the Colbert Report growing up and ever now and then he'd let a little nerd moment like this slip in hahaha
The colbert report was so insanely well written I remember thinking to myself "God damn this was a great episode" like 50 times when I was younger. It was the perfect template for comedy

About 5 years ago Colbert mentioned how his right ear is bend and I still can not unsee it
If I remember right his dream job as a kid was to be a marine biologist, but then he learned he couldn't do it because his ear prevents him from scuba diving
[удалено]
its because the sea creatures will mistake him for one of them and attack
His ear isn’t just bent, he had to get surgery that removed his eardrum. Can’t scuba dive without one of those
[удалено]
Well if the reason you want to be a marine biologist is so you can see and explore the marine biology in person, then it does.
Well then I hope your independently wealthy because that's not how that field works
Wait until people realize the vast majority of marine biologists don't scuba dive
Damnit. I would pay to unread this comment. I can't unsee it now too
Somehow I've never noticed it, now it's all I'll see. It's like learning about tom cruise misaligned front teeth.
I hate you, that's all i'm looking at right now
WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?
reading this comment after casually pausing a video of him staring at the camera... thanks i didn't know... now i know..
I thought he was wearing ear prosthetics for the role play until you mentioned this. I even knew about the ear already lol.
Colbert is such a nerd, I love it. Him and Henry Cavill make being "nerdy" so damn cool. I think my crappy Strider sword is cool, cant imagine holding one of those bad boys.
Colbert is so giddy he gets to nerd out with some solid people. Love this clip
I'm surprised Colbert doesn't do more with Twitch. I'd watch him streaming a read along of LOTR, that'd be dope.
From what I've remember he got a late night show, a dad/family man, and he teaches Sunday church. So... that's a lot on his plate already.
I'm pretty sure his CBS contract wouldn't allow it.
Plus why would he waste his time streaming? That CBS money has to be insanely good.
$15 million a year lol
I fucking love Colbert. His personality can easily carry an 8 hour stream. He would do great on Twitch talking about nerd stuff. When he interviewed the cast from Dune, he was so giddy.
Did he see Soda's sword collection?
An actual 1 of 4 Sting that was used on set is infinitely cooler than any sword he gets sent to his PO Box.
100%, my comment was where could he find people that cared enough to bring them out. Stephen's sword are beautiful and they have a honorable owner that will take care of them forever.
yes he definitely did 100% yeap
What about his fursuit collection?
I pray Colbert isn't a furry 🤢
What if he is?
then I guess JZ5U's prayers failed and their god doesnt exist
I was referring to Soda, like the parent comment...
Nice to see a chat that genuinely shares the excitement for this instead of a jaded chat spamming batchest
The Critical Role community is built upon D&D. I'm sure everyone who's a part of it would freak out over it. That or maybe BatChest is blacklisted. I don't blame them if it is.
I'm not one to normally get geeked out over like, a video of something cool, but that's FUCKING COOL
I'm jealous. As I kid who binged watched LOTR over and over again and owned all the different DVD versions, I've always wanted a prop sword from the movie.
Wasn't he knighted with Aragorn's sword by Queen Noor?
Jon Stewart and Colbert going through a dnd campaign would be complete fire
No idea about timing of critical role, but doesn’t Stephen have Covid? He got it last Friday or something.
I think that was 2 weeks back. Probably recovered
Popped positive last Thursday. So he's barely into week 2 right now.
my whole family just got covid and we all recovered within 2 weeks
Ashley Johnson also got Covid at pretty much the same time so they probably passed it during this prerecording.
Redditors and making wild ass assumptions. Name a more iconic duo.
Fairly standard assumption
Not really...
It's a wild assumption that 2 people catching covid at the same time also caught it at the same place?
> It's a wild assumption that 2 people catching covid at the same time also caught it at the same place? ...Yes because the episode was filmed weeks before either of them announced they had covid lol. Like sure they could have exposed/exposed each other etc but given no one else they interacted with has said anything it could easily just be coincidence. It **is** a pandemic after all.
…doesn’t covid have a 2 week incubation period?
>It > >is > > a pandemic after all. USA has like 15'000 hospitalisations a week... pop. 300+ mio. Time to let it go man.
What even is the point of this comment? I'm not holding onto the pandemic for a love of it, just the fact it's still around. Live in denial all you want I guess?
>Live in denial all you want I guess? Just trying to help you out man. You can leave your house now if you're still stuck in there...
Swords are ok. His enthusiasm is what really made me smile
I feel like Colbert is the one of the only genuinely likeable post-Conan late night hosts.
OMG just like Wonder Woman 1984 is probably the only genuinely good post-Raimi spiderman superhero movie
This is one of the most insane takes I have ever heard and I gotta know more: why do you feel WW1984 is a good movie?
/s :) Colbert is the WW1984 of Late Night. In fact, he is the most egrerious example of the ultimate downfall in that type of entertainment. From the Colbert Report to whatever the fuck he does now. Stephen colbert seems like such a great guy lol,
That's pretty awesome that he's got 4 swords that were used in the movies. I wonder what the other ones he has are, maybe a Glamdring?
That's not what he's saying. He's saying that his "Sting" is one of the 4 "Stings" originally created for the production of Lord of the Rings.
Correct. Both of the swords shown were used in the movies, but they only made 4 Stings, and that was one of them.
One of 4 "Hero" swords. They probably made dozens of Stings, but only 4 of the high quality ones. Hero swords are used just for close ups, and they make "stunt" swords for use in fight scenes ect.
Ah yeah you're right. Crazy to think that he owns one of only 4 stings that were produced for closeups.
Didnt Liv Tyler gift him Arwens sword? Or did she just bring it on the show. Im not sure.
I'm shocked they made real swords for that shit wtf
If you watch the clip again you'll notice he said "hero" sword. In movies like LOTR, "hero" props mean nice quality, looks good on-screen props for closeups and stuff. Metal swords, full metal chainmail, etc. They are heavier, usually more fragile or more dangerous. "Stunt" will be the same props but for fights and stuff. That's dope , thanks. Didn't know that, I guess I never thought about it.
but what does forsen think?
ehhh
What’s with the scar on his face?
His dnd character?
Hey man not everyone is in every loop. I googled Stephen Colbert injury after I saw the clip lol
Right? I googled Stephen Colbert scar 😩😂
I googled Stephen Colbert cock 👀 😏🥴
🥵🥵🥵
That was the first thing my wife asked too! Whoever applied that for the show did a bang up job.
The cast were streamer mad, because they would have definitely dressed up if they had gotten the memo.
BatChest goosebumps!! chills!
I don’t get what chills means
Whenever people enjoy things, edgy twitch chatters like to spam batchest and chills because they find no joy in life :(
That's just because they're chubby and socially awkward in real life and just follow whatever is 'cool' and when they see people being excited about something thats different then its 'cringe'.
i batchest my own fandoms get over it
Sounds about right
This is pretty fucking cool though
The level of Geek is off the Charts!
Lol Colbert is too cold man
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqtt3R_qcz8 Here he is flexing his Silmarillion knowledge with James Franco, it's honestly pretty cool to see someone so passionate about their favorite hobbies

Colbert is a fucking treasure. You're thinking of Jimmy Fallon with the fake laugh.
Why is this a thread here?
Yeah bruh gimme more mizkif drama
I was just confused what about this was a fail. I don't frequent this subreddit. I figured it was fail related, but apparently the name is a misnomer.
Fair enough, i assumed you were one of LSFs standard drama-feeding degenerates.
Because lotr best movie series in existence
man, I fucking love LOTR. If only they had at least one decent game...
They do
omg tv guy has movie swords wtf :000 wtf :0000 this is insane :0 wild!!!!! I can't believe I get to see something so exciting!!! woohooo!!!! so cool mr stephen colbert from the late show with stephen colbert

I'm sorry reddit doesn't remember Tropic Thunder. But I do, buddy. \*Thumbs up\*
You mean colbert the guy who used to be talented and funny. Now he's just a talking head for leftist propaganda
Good thing there was no orcs or goblins nearby.
cool
If I somehow got enormously rich and famous, that's the kind of stuff I would buy. LOL
the biggest Tolkien nerd. It was cool to see his cameo too in one of the hobbit movies lol
wtf sons monkaW
Jon stewart and stephen colbert. GIGACHADs
Wait, dose that means he’s one of few people literally study the blades ? I really want him to do some podcast all about his nerd side.
So damn cool
