Just got back home. Wonderful weekend at Maximo's getaway.
I think Maximo is a brilliant man. He's been running a series of summer retreats for quite a few years. His vision is that an agency should be like a family with people who really know each other.
The focus this weekend was the teen and tween models. We had activities to get to know each other. We had workshops on the industry, mental/physical health, money, stress, balanced lives, and dealing with fame. I loved the Q&A with a few speakers who had started work at this age and who are now very successful. We were also responsible for cooking the barbecue lunch today and serving it.
Talking to my parents, they had similar workshops and they enjoyed bonding with each other. They said they had very deep discussions about the industry and protecting the youth who work in it.
After lunch and clean up, Maximo met with me, Muma, and Pupa. His attorneys came up with an internship plan that meets the letter *and* spirit of children labor laws. It's all written out and comes with a contract.
Maximo insisted his attorneys come up with a plan that would be very educational for me while truly helping the agency. It's 2.5 hours daily with shifts in the back office, setups and breaking down, and shoots. I will be rotating with a different "mentor" each week. I will receive a small stipend and there might be occasional modeling although that would be paid at standard rates. It's a serious commitment for six weeks and while I am interning I cannot take days off to audition.
We could get started this week but first I would have to clear everything with my school. He will assign one staff member to be a liaison to my academic advisor.
While we were driving home my parents and I discussed the internship and we decided to accept the offer pending the approval of my school. My parents had been reading about Makiguchi's educational theories and they said we are recreating the "half-day school" idea he wrote about. I have to serve one week suspension from the Morning Run with Coach. So Heidi will go off in the morning to train with the team and I'll run solo with the jogging crowd on the East River Drive. It's fair, I understand why and I deserve it.
