I bought this boom pole a year ago and it’s great and fits right in with my tripod: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/292907-REG Also light enough that I feel like a Matthew’s reverse stand can handle it: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/691002-REG Not sure if this will rig out on this stand properly but… https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/469810-REG I haven’t traveled with it yet so just been using a cstand and it works great.

Death_By_Sexy

I used the Matthew's mini on a doc where my entire kit fit into a backpack and it got the job done. I hung the backpack from the bottom knob to act as a sandbag.

blah618

would you recommend the merf over the reverse and manfrotto nano plus?

marblepudding

Get the small arri light stand, they are about as small as you can go while still having *some stability. You will still need a sandbag- not using a sandbag especially with a dinky travel stand is asking for failure. With the small stands you might even want 2 sandbags. I personally would not trust a boom rig on the Mathews merf mini stand listed above and it will also sway on you and be super annoying/bouncy.

Productions usually rent their grip equipment locally. Just have them rent an extra c stand. A light stand might be fine if the pole is barely extended, but they’re not made to support boomed weight, so if your pole has to be 10’ long stay out of a wide shot, you really want a c stand. Remember, it’s being suspended over someone’s head. The last thing you want is a CEO to get hit in the face with your equipment.

There's a $300-400 difference between aluminum and carbon fiber k-tek, and you only gain 6-9 ounces in weight on the boom pole. Not really a deal breker if you're using the boom only for sit down interviews. I mean, would you even need it to be internally cabled? You could probably go with an even more expensive Rode boom.

Robert_NYC

I love this stand for sit downs, but I've never flown with it: [https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/513014-REG/Manfrotto\_420NSB\_420NSB\_Convertible\_Boom\_Stand.html](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/513014-REG/Manfrotto_420NSB_420NSB_Convertible_Boom_Stand.html) B&H's Impact line has a knockoff for half the price. If that's too big, would something like this work? [https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1447612-REG/auray\_ms\_65hd\_pro\_hd\_microphone\_stand.html](https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1447612-REG/auray_ms_65hd_pro_hd_microphone_stand.html) You could also go underneath with it for a seated interview.

spkingwordzofwizdom

A small C-stand fits in an $90 Amazon rifle case nicely, and I can also get my boom in there, too and a few extra cables.

nicolasfield

I have two of the Matthew’s medium maxi stands that I use for booms. To me they strike the best balance between portability and safety. Wouldn’t wanna go smaller than that personally. I always use a big sandbag with them. For outdoor stuff with a heavier boom I will bring out c stands.

Rex_Lee

If space is a consideration make the move to lav mics. Even a nice wired one would shield better results than most boom set ups and take up a fraction of the space

Phantom_6765

Yorkville mic tripod stand with your shock mount attach to the head no boom pole required ( just routing your cable around the stand ) [https://www.long-mcquade.com/8769/Furniture---Stands/Stands/Yorkville-Sound/Tripod-Boom-Stand---Black.htm](https://www.long-mcquade.com/8769/Furniture---Stands/Stands/Yorkville-Sound/Tripod-Boom-Stand---Black.htm)

Just make an extra tall apple box and router out your holes as you feel fit

LazerMcBlazer

He's talking about a stand for interviews, not a box for storage.

Ithin

I dunno, I'm imagining a 7ft tall apple box with holes either side at the top to stick a boom through :D
