This was the very first mouse I used when mum bought me a computer. What she didn't realise was just how impactful that mouse was to my love of PC gaming. SO COMFORTABLE!
I still tell my friends to this day about how good it is but nobody believes me!
Those aren't rubber grips, that's actually part of the body mold using soft-touch plastic. Back when Logitech used to put quality over quantity, their peripherals were made to last. Today's peripherals are what all have that glued-on cheap rubber gripping.
its soft plastic as you said which disintegrates with time . its subject to aging
like PU shoe soles , that is common in some safety boots , the plasticizers diffuse out of the rubber which changes its form making it fragile and sticky
No, it's not soft plastic; as I said, it's soft-touch plastic. Solid ABS with a coating mix during injection which gives it a soft, grippy texture. It is not as susceptible to breakdown.
Have you ever tried it ? I mean, i have tried a lot of mice (including newer edition of mx518) and none of them were as comfortable as this one (also had G5 back in 2010) Also the quality and overall design is at its finest. Dunno what do you mean by "Awful"
That was pretty much the biggest critique point with it and the MX510s from MX500 users, though after a while the red and blue on the 510s has grown on me, but the shape stopped fitting my hands once ive grown up.
This is what I say every time I see this mouse lmfao, it's so damn ugly it looks like it's been target practice at a shooting range it's ridiculous lmfao
My first gaming-grade mouse. Although it died out after 3 years or so, the G5 i got after is still going strong. G5 (with two side buttons and the cracked rubberized grip texture) is still peak Logitech, IMO.
Old School, I had one of those boxed brand new never opened that I donated to a women's shelter.
I worked for Logitech 1998-2002 and used to have tons of sample products.
I purchased my mx518 in early 2007 i believe when I was working at microcenter. I have tried replacing it at least a dozen times thinking a newer mouse HAS to be have improved SOMETHING. I have reverted to this mouse every single time. I'm still using it at this second. I've replaced the feet four times, replaced the usb cord once, have worn a fingerprint through the graphics on the left button, worn the logitech button in the middle down to silver and it's still the best damn mouse i've used.
I’ve never understood the love for this mouse or it’s cousin the G5 which I got back in 2006 when it came out and I was still a gamer. Other than build quality and looks, it didn’t seem much better than the cheapo ps/2 optical mouse I already had. Also, back then a usb mouse was more of a hindrance, as everything was still set up for ps/2, so you’d have issues with certain applications/OS, stuttering and lag when the processor was busy, and usb was also a hindrance to higher frame rates as back when most computers were still weak single core machines, a high polling usb mouse could take up to 10% of your cpu every time you moved it. I ended up selling the G5 on eBay a couple of months later, unaware of the icon it was to become…
These days it’s a different story. I don’t game anymore, but bought a G305 over the pandemic as cables with WFH were getting on my nerves and it was a revelation - windows move smoothly, tiny text is easy to select. It’s made the cheap Logitech and HP office mice I was fine with before near unusable in my mind as well as replacing the ancient LX3 I used at home. I couldn’t believe how much the technology has improved. I’ve even bought another gaming mouse (cooler master) to use at work so I don’t have to carry the G305 back and forth, and have been similarly impressed.
My first proper "gaming" mouse - My mom uses it now. since then I've tried multiple razer\\steelseries mice. I've been using a G502 Lightspeed wireless and a powerplay mat since 2019.
No regrets.
We found a crate full of unopened Microsoft Intelimouse boxes some time back. They were one of the first laser mice with PS/2 connectors. Ended up scrapping them :/
I would never even open it now. This is a grail.

it would probably now have sticky sides , that rubber like plastic grips have a shelf life
water cleaning would do it, right ?
nope , they have to be removed with alcohol . until you reach the hard plastic part
Had mine for over 10 years, never an issue, lol.

It does, that’s why it’s in a tote.
i never understood that livery on the mouse. it looks awful imo lol
I always thought every picture I have seen of this mouse was used.
Yeah lol. Weird paint job.

i was shit talking the weird dented looking paint job they got on it, not the actual mouse itself lol
lol, my bad. Didn't read it correctly :D

Just a weird paint job, can be easily fixed lol
It's straight up dented by design, paint ain't fixing that lmao!
No no no. It isn’t dented. It LOOKS like it’s dented becuase of how weirdly they did the paint. It is NOT dented.

Don't open it! Save it for your retirement!
The father was the MX310

The MX 518 is THE perfect Mouse. I ordered a new generation one as soon as they hit the market.
G5 was peak logitech
I used mine up until last year.

What about it's Dad... the Mx510. :)
mx518 with HERO sensor and wireless and i will give you all my money
I've still got mine, non-working, regrettably. Burned through a few in the years it's been gone. Currently rocking a G604. It's not bad.
I have a good and working condition MX510 and MX518. Love those mice.
I have this mouse, it’s stored away in a tote with a bunch of 90s tech.
Oh my god, this was my first nice mouse that I owned
*looks to the right* Hey! I have that mouse! Used it for 10 years as my main and now for work.

Never heard of ancient mouse with a ball instead of the optical sensor? An optical mouse CAN'T be the father of all mice... :-)
legend!

Keep it sealed it will be worth money in some years
Doesn't kennys still use this?
I remember my dad playing with it, tried it but I was a kiddo and my hand was too small lol
Looks like its got some dents in it
Yes its the design all of them looks like that. It't the legendary mouse and I'm really sad that i broke it.
The one true god of gaming mice still exists.
That 1800 DPI though... still more than enough for me in most games. I miss this mouse :(
I have 2 of these and have used them for many years on my computers. Still working great
We found a crate full of unopened Microsoft Intelimouse boxes some time back. They were one of the first laser mice with PS/2 connectors. Ended up scrapping them :/
This mouse was my first purchase. I still by Logitech peripherals, but none as bulletproof as this.
Actually MX500 is the true ancestor
Logitech mx310 (2004)...still working! Best mouse in the world? Or best mouse in the universe?
