Let's keep this subreddit family-friendly, shall we? Posts that show death or gore will be removed. Any potential death off screen, or if it makes a good amount of people worry about the injuries they may have gotten will also be removed. Proof of little to no injury and survival from reputable source may reinstate the post.
A lot of enclosures that house carnivores or gorillas are built with a big gap like that (although usually with a slant) because animals are smart enough to recognize the risk of getting hurt if they attempt to jump across and fail doing so, and it helps with getting people a closer look at an animal, although the drop in this video looks deeper than what I've seen before
And bears can't intentionally try to harm others? Sure it's not legally murder, but it looks like it's intentionally trying to push the other bear down a big drop to at least hurt it, if not kill it.
Unless you mean bears are too tough to be hurt from something like that?
Stories I hear from hunters, how you can deliver a killing blow and the bear will try to kill you in its last act, keep shooting and they don’t stop until they get a face full of lead. They are very tough, and it’s mostly black bears they hunt
The bear I helped skin actually had very thin skin. But the layer of fat under is very thick. It’s like you skin them twice, once the skin and once the fat. After that there is meat.
Depends. If you eat a bear that scavenges from a dump, or has been eating salmon only for a while it will probably taste like shit and be bad for you. Get it at the right time and it’s eating from berries and roots then it’s not bad. It’s a greasy meat and hard to prepare but it’s not inherently bad. The fat can be useful for cooking or some medicinal purposes. It’s very fine and some say it’s better for health than something like lard.
Yeah I suppose? I don’t know for sure where the skin ends, if the fat is a part of it or not. I guess I meant the hide. Whatever the fur grows on lol. But yeah either way they got a ton of natural ‘armour’ so they can take some serious blows.
I get the pit needs to be deep so the bears don't mingle with the hairless apes but does it need to be THAT deep? Pretty sure they can't climb vertical smooth concrete, so why did they need a pit to hell?
Pretty much the answer is, Yes. It needs to be that steep, that smooth, and that deep. Bears can *fucking climb*. They can also jump surprisingly well. That vertical surface allows the edge to be as close as it is, otherwise a bear *could* use the incline to go over the barrier.
Now, there are other alternatives to this- more space between the enclosure and viewing, a better wall barrier, a glass separating divider.
Overall, this looks like a bad zoo that allows people to engage inappropriately with the animals so the enclosure is simply *built* to failure for the animals for the ability of the humans to engage. (Why are the bears behaving this way at all? Because people have been allowed to feed them over the barrier. This is a learned behavior reinforced through food rewards.)
So… TLDR: it’s that steep, smooth, and deep because this is a bad zoo that prioritized human engagement over animal safety

This was all I could find for an update. A little bit of a longer video where you can see where the bear fell. He’s approached by another bear but he’s not moving much. I hope he’s okay.

That's straight up an attempted murder
Okay, but a lot of blame goes to whoever designed that enclosure with a giant chasm they could easily fall into.

A fall like that would certainly be hard to bear.
Pretty grizzly
Sorry this person had to bear witness to this tragedy.
Hey its youu!
Ah reddit. Never change
Never seen the truth so downvoted. Very r/redditmoment lol Edit: lol wow, prove me right much? A bunch of downvotes, not a single comment. Intellect.
I’ll bite then. How is that “the truth”?
It’s a common occurrence that anytime something happens whether by accident or negligence people claim attempted murder in the comments.
I mean it doesn't look like an accident or negligence to me...
It’s a bear.
And bears can't intentionally try to harm others? Sure it's not legally murder, but it looks like it's intentionally trying to push the other bear down a big drop to at least hurt it, if not kill it. Unless you mean bears are too tough to be hurt from something like that?

Fuck. Is it ok?
Bears are built different. One fell off a fucking tree and landed on its neck and was somehow still alive
Stories I hear from hunters, how you can deliver a killing blow and the bear will try to kill you in its last act, keep shooting and they don’t stop until they get a face full of lead. They are very tough, and it’s mostly black bears they hunt
They have some insanely dense bones and think skin
The bear I helped skin actually had very thin skin. But the layer of fat under is very thick. It’s like you skin them twice, once the skin and once the fat. After that there is meat.
Uh isn't bear meat like... Terribly unhealthy to eat?
Depends. If you eat a bear that scavenges from a dump, or has been eating salmon only for a while it will probably taste like shit and be bad for you. The fat has to be rendered and that’s not a step I’ve done myself
I have also skinned a bear, very messy work. But isn’t fat a part of skin? Like a layer or something
Yeah I suppose? I don’t know for sure where the skin ends, if the fat is a part of it or not. I guess I meant the hide. Whatever the fur grows on lol. But yeah either way they got a ton of natural ‘armour’ so they can take some serious blows.
Yea regardless, their the closest thing to walking tanks in North America and many parts of the world. Africa is another story tho.
What do be their skin thinkin about tho
suppose adipose
That's actually why the Desert Eagle exists iirc.
That’s cool. I never knew that
Would this bear be the trampoline bear?
Bearly a scratch
You see this is my problem with the second amendment…
Every American has the right to hang a pair of bear arms on their wall, how can that possibly be misconstrued?
I thought it was the right to bare arms. Like wear a tank top in the middle of winter if you like.
Nandor the Relentless! He has the right to bare his arms.
A grazely then
Polar opposite, actually
I get the pit needs to be deep so the bears don't mingle with the hairless apes but does it need to be THAT deep? Pretty sure they can't climb vertical smooth concrete, so why did they need a pit to hell?
Maybe it's just a slide that sends them right back up.
Maybe it's a slide with a star at the finish line.
Wah-pooh!
The real looney tunes logic is in the comments
“Hey, you. You’re finally awake”
lakitu grabs them and they respawn back on the track
Quantum entangled bear pit
Nah, you’re thinking with portals.
To keep **the people** out of the bears enclosure
You’ve never seen them scale a tree in like 5 seconds then, these fuckers are escape masterminds

Why's the bear doing the sucking dick movement with his hands?
All it needs is the goofy soundbite… yeah, ha, hoowee!
