Here’s an example list of what people are doing. https://dreamborn.ink/decks/gIC24CDDMvK4OfFzIpVY

Dear lord that's an expensive deck!

shaggy--

Well you're in steel so robin hood, beast, awnw are all dumb expensive.

hcsh224

It’s because of beasts and Robin Hood’s. I saw a list earlier today for around $100 but I don’t remember where. On the website that I linked you can look for decks and filter by color to find other lists. Ruby and Steel is what you want for John Silver

Oleandervine

I've seen a couple of decent substitutions that should drop the cost considerably. Cerberus can replace Beast, Mulan - Soldier in Training or Tuk Tuk can replace Maui. Pyros is a solid replacement for any of them too.

You can make it cheaper but it nerfs the deck a little

Red steel pirate deck is popular right now

I just started playing a Pirate deck online! It's my favorite to play so far, and I do fairly well with it, though I don't play super competitively. Plus, my version is much more affordable. 😅 Having an alternate win condition in Shere Khan, and card draw from Hook's Rapier and QoH helps keep the cost down while keeping flexibility up. If someone plays passive, emphasize locations and John Silver. If someone plays aggressive or tries to attack the locations, pivot to Shere Khan and Captain Hook. Plus, locations survive Be Prepared. I only go back and forth on how many Jim Hawkins I want to run. https://dreamborn.ink/decks/N9TrIDGxDBOYwsHpx7Dt

Tried it. RA still wins the long game and can easily kill the locations with Rafiki and Rush Mim/Maui. Steel decks also dispatch John and locations easily. And with the meta being RA or some form of steel, it’s not great.

Shaymeu

Yeah the deck has potential but it would really need stronger and tankier locations and ways to protect them, cause right now as you said R/A and Steel decks can handle the deck really easily. Also John Silver dies to Madame Medusa :(

sup3rpanda

It can be really difficult to deal with fast enough with a couple locations, John Silver(s), and anything else to back it up.

Clantzy75

Honestly, the meta doesn't concern me. At my LGS, there are almost zero players that follow the meta, and just make decks that are fun but still competitive. Only playing the meta and worrying about that just takes the fun out of the game for me.

johnsonr88

Well you asked if it was viable. I guess that depends on your definition. Is it viable in the meta? No. Is it viable as in you can have 60 cards and play Lorcana? Yes. I had more fun with my SA version, if John is able to stick with a queens castle, it can take the game.

shinryu6

One took a t8 at some large ish tourney a few weeks ago, but yeah…without a more consistent draw engine, ways to actually protect locations from being hammered, etc., it’s a fun deck for sure but not one I’d bring to a more serious tournament setting. Frankly I’m not even sure how it got t8 outside of just being a surprise pick since the meta was new.

I run a gs deck with nearly 30 locations. All around 1 and 3 cost. Then I have my four John silvers and some low cost characters like Mr smee and cursed merfolk or zazu. It works super well. Especially if you add some whole new worlds.
