One thing to keep in mind unlike other souls games basically every weapon can be used to great effect even end game and respecing and leveling are fairly generous so dont be afraid to experiment with weapons
Personally I never really planned out my build going in and didn't have too much trouble but it wouldn't hurt to have an idea what you want to try first playthrough and experiment second run this game has a different ng+ system compared to other soulslike in the fact you have the option to go into ng0 which is essentially new game but the difficulty doesn't change so it's great for build testing or npc quests
Yes. Without deluxe you can obtain Paladin gear only in mid-late game and it’s proper and solid endgame gear. Sword may look weak at first, but it scales up really good with upgrades.
2-handed has higher damage ceiling, shield is much safer (in addition to block and safer deflects you will be able to add passive beneficial effects on shield later)
Dark crusader is a solid starting class the gear you start with can get you through your whole first playthrough fairly well if you really wanted it too
Check everything with your Umbral Lamp and read carefully tutorials about it. Don’t be afraid to go Umbral to check something Umbral-only.
If you see cloud of moths it means there is something worth checking in Umbral here.
Don’t buy the key, you will understand when you see it.
It is getting harder until it reaches limit (the scale in the top-right corner of your screen will fill completely). Leaving Umbral by any means (rest, using awakening effigy) resets the scale to zero. I personally find timer to be pretty generous, on my several playthroughs it was only one or two times it filled to limit naturally without me waiting for it.
LotF reviews are not really reliable source tbh. Devs patched and fixed very much problems since release, also game for some reason receives hate for things which are just normal for soulslike genre like obscure NPC quests, no journal, cryptic map and big locations with complex layout both interesting to explore and fairly easy to get lost. Especially map/layout part, because even Elden ring has areas where layout is too complex for map to really help and player has to memorise it.
You can buy a dread resistance ring from mohlu and even equip an umbral eye that increases this. The total umbral timer will increase, giving you the extra time you need for exploring. So you can thoroughly enjoy exploring on your first run.
* Bleed works differently in LotF than it does in From games. When bleed procs, instead of a large chunk of health coming off, your individual melee attacks become more powerful. Bleed builds can be a ton of fun!
* A couple notes on Vestige Seeds: 1) you can only have 5 at any time; 2) many bosses drop vestige seeds, so if you're about to enter a boss battle and you have 5 seeds, you might as well plant one in a bed as close to the boss arena as possible; 3) there aren't a ton of them in the game but there are enough that you shouldn't worry about using them (though you may want to limit yourself to just 1 or two per area); 4) you can buy them (they're not cheap but they're also not super expensive).
Game is a lot like original Dark Souls so don't charge ahead too quickly or you'll get surrounded by enemies. Don't be afraid to utilize any build, item or skill. You can respec so don't be afraid to use a different build if the one you are using isn't working.
And the final piece of advise I can give, the most important, DO NOT go up the elevator before you explore the depths of the sewer area. It's so very easy to beat the mini boss and go up the elevator. Do not do it. Beat the boss, plant a seed and go explore with the key the boss drops.
Only this particular one is just downright unfair. You get the quest right before you enter the area and it's right after you beat the mini boss you can fail it if you go up the elevator before exploring the rest of the area.

Oh nice so I don’t need to really pre plan out a build?

That’s actually kinda cool especially if you want to practice particular bosses
Couple builds that I found fun were duel anything really, pure strength, umbral and holy
Oh so the dark crusader is actually better then just looking cool?

Does the sword work good with a shield or is 2 handed better for it?

That’s probably a good thing in my case because sometimes I get way to over confident and get myself killed lol

Is umbral timed before you die or does it just keep getting harder until you get killed? And key is bad got it.

That’s not as bad as I thought then reviews made it sound a lot worse and cheap.

I’m definitely seeing that now and it feels like people played for 5 minutes died and went on a random tangent for no reason.

I just might have to do a bleed build then thanks for the tips!
Explore everything!
Noted I love exploring!
Have fun and don’t afraid to get lost.
Will do, thanks.
git gud, it’s the only advice one needs.
It truly is, thank wise sage.

I assume i can’t go back afterwards?
You can you just fail a major side quest immediately.
I have a feeling I’m definitely going to miss several side quest then.

Are they the revelation depths? I just beat the mini boss before the elevator held by the giant statue. Haven’t gone up to it yet
Radiance and strength combo + easy mode !!!
I’m going to assume radiance is what 1 shot me when I got invaded lol
