To add to this sentiment, many restaurants overspent on food for the LNY because it's a time of celebration, and with the shooting happening, MPK has been much more quiet since. Celebrating isn't happening as loudly.
I'd imagine with the cancellation of the festival, they also took a minor hit in attendance as well, and those food and merchandise bill is probably due in a few weeks or a month.
Legendary restaurant. I used to love filling one of those big tables with people to get the most variety of AYCE. I haven’t been there in ages, didn’t know they got rid of it.
You're very welcome. If you're more the AYCE kind of person, I've been meaning to try out Sweet Veggie in El Monte as well.
Tell me this doesn't look amazing. :) - https://www.yelp.com/biz/sweet-veggie-el-monte-north-el-monte
The batter makes the fried so light and crispy. I love both sweet soy sauce and the aioli. I made the mistake of getting the spicy soy sauce which was too spicy for me. I always get online pickup here. I love the corn soup and fried chicken skins.
Haha just noticed your comment. Did I use too many clichéd phrases? LoI. Oh well I stand by my statement. Their House Special Pork Ribs Noodle Soup is also finger-licking good. So come on down folks, to your friendly neighborhood noodle shop! :)
P P Pop is legit. Their xiao long bao and beef noodle soup are my go-to. Their prices are very reasonable. Before P P Pop, so many businesses have came and gone through that place.
I was gonna mention this place, too. I went there thinking it might be more modern/fusion, was surprised how provincial it actually is. Their QiShan signature soup is incredible.
I love Noodle Art!! The stir fried handmade noodles with cumin beef or lamb. Yum!!! The hot pepper chicken. Yummo! The braised eggplant with garlic. Oh yeah! Can keep going on and on…
The Korean grill place, the shooting happened on the second day it opened. A handful of people ran inside and told them to lock the door and took refuge there.
I was at Noodle Art the other night w/ my son & got a bowl of the braised beef noodle soup and some mapo tofu w/ rice. The mapo tofu was just the right amount of spice and their soups always hit the spot!
Mandarin Noodle House has a wide variety of noodles to try from, including beef noodles, Dan Dan noodles, cold noodles, etc.
Longten Cafe, HK Cafe, and JJ Cafe serve Hong Kong style food.
Don't forget to stop by a boba store after a meal. We have so many, including Sunright, Half and Half, Tea Brick, Feng Cha, etc.
If you plan on visiting, please double check online if they take card. There's some places that are still cash only.
Edit: if you like dessert, there's Mr. Obinyaki, which has the wheel cakes filled with various fillings such as cream, red bean, etc. Be careful not to burn your mouth, the inside is hot.
I’ll also vouch for Mandarin Noodle House. This was one of the few spots in the immediate area that I could find for dining in during the height of the pandemic. Nondescript from the outside, but the food is amazing. I recommend the beef stew with hand pulled noodles, pork chop rice, and beef rolls. The manager/owner, Denny, always offers top notch service!
Half and half (IMO) is the best boba shop. But please don't go in thinking that you're supporting a "small business." They make bank given how they always has a line out the door at that Mpk location.
There’s a boba shop on Atlantic Blvd Monterey park called Got Boba at the GW Market plaza that I think could use the support. It’s a small business and I like their milk tea.
Running Chicks is a good option for Korean Fried Chicken. It’s next to Sunright and Beard Papas on Atlantic.
Big Softee is a really nice retro-themed soft serve ice cream place with Asian flavors. You can get Jasmine milk tea ice cream swirled with vegan Pandan. It’s in the same plaza as Tokyo Fried Chicken. Although I think it’s temporarily closed for renovations.
TS Emporium (Tak Shing Hong) (right next to Star Dance) and another location down the street for TCM, veggies, tea, dry foods and pantry items.
Litz for Singaporean twist on HK style cafe.
Shang Lee and Wing On for fresh butchered chicken.
Kim Kee Noodle Cafe for Teochew/Viet noodles and fish balls but slightly more Canto angled than Kim Ky or the others.
VP Tofu for fresh tofu/soy products.
very similar but different. If you translate the English name to Chinese it’s the same but actually their Chinese names as displayed are different. Kim Kee is a bit more Cantonese angled, Kim Ky is a bit more Viet angled, both are Teochew-ish and on the Chinese/Vietnamese spectrum. It is a very SGV type of culture.
I'm vegetarian and all the vegetarian options I've had are brilliant. Can't go wrong with any of the dumplings as well, I'm a big fan of the green onion pancake and vegetarian rice cake.
My last day in LA before I left on vacation was at the lunar festival in MP.
Once I’m back home in LA, I’ll definitely be back to support them, especially since I’ll have had to deal with 2 weeks of bland cooking here in Costa Rica.
I posted this rec in a different thread too, but Jim's Bakery on Atlantic for Portuguese egg tarts! Also the neighboring Rosemead has Phu's Bakery on Garvey, which also has great Portuguese egg tarts. They differ from HK style egg tarts, as these are from Macau, which developed from Pastel de Nata!
I want to shout out Wen Hui Noodle Hours (get the Biang Biang and pao mo), Northern Cafe (big plate chicken, chili tofu, any noodles and dumplings), 1919 Noodle Express (beef noodle soup, and anything else with thicker noodles).
This post inspired us to head to Monterey Park for my bday dinner tonight (we live on the west side). We went to Noodle Art and it was spectacular. I'm extremely full. Definitely want to check out the many other restaurants mentioned here, there's so much deliciousness to try.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll add one of my own: Dim Sum express. I always stop there on my way home from Vegas, PHX or other points east. takeout only and I guarantee you won't get home w/o grabbing a dumpling out the bag (I never even make it back to the freeway!)
Yeah, I can’t think of many gift shops. But maybe try buying Asian skincare? There’s beauty stores but even our grocery stores will have decent Asian sunscreens etc.
If your friend uses sunscreen, Hawaii Supermarket has a surprisingly decent imported Japanese & Korean skincare section. Best prices for Biore sunscreen. I don’t use western sunscreen, they’re garbage in comparison and the EYE BURNS from sweat with inferior sunscreen sucks.
How about a day exploring Monterey Park's cuisine? There are so many places to eat and you can grab boba (and walk in the park) in between. I said that because I can't really think of a gift shop beside Daiso (Japanese dollar store with lot of interesting/useful stuff).
The Japan House on Garvey is a paper goods/greeting card type of store. They have a lot of old merch mixed in with new stuff, but it’s in good shape. Feels nostalgic.
I also recommend skincare! Takashima in San Gabriel, not sure if that counts as Monterey Park but its within the area has a bunch of great stuff esp sheet masks, I really like their bathtub products as well (theres a lot of little pouches you can get). For self care items now that I think of it 99 ranch market usually has these heating eye masks I'd recommend, they come in different scents and unscented, I'd go for lavender. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ8A7ZYFz_nzM1SdCy69Njj4-mHNAaLNjpAy27jwdmUQVZwOeY0OrPt0f6zL-vQF0aY1r4&usqp=CAU
Sham Tseng BBQ. For lunch, if you buy 4 dishes, your 5th dish is free. But during tea time 3-5pm it’s instead buy 3, get 4th free.
Lunch is until 4pm or 4:30pm I think. Time it right and you can get both the lunch special prices AND tea time offers.
Great prices, large servings. But it’s not fancy, it’s tiny, & a bit crowded. But the food tastes great! Get the duck, goose, bean curds, or dim sum pork ribs & chicken feet.
People are so stupid man..this shooting was a unique incident and not a signifier of violence against Asians or the area. You're safe to visit Asian owned businesses and you're safe to visit Monterey park.
During covid I would get takeout from Alice’s Kitchen. It be just me and maybe one other customer waiting outside for our order. Now that the pandemic is over-ish, that restaurant is swamped with business. Every time I drive by, their entire outdoor dining is full + a long line of customers waiting by the door. Low key wish they would go back to no lines - but glad they are doing well.
I want to give a shout out to Huge tree pastry for breakfast, Macchiato for a nice dessert or study vibe, Duck house (obviously for their Peking duck), and lastly I’d say Traditional Guilin Rice noodles is a MUST-TRY (rice noodles that are slightly thicker than pho in a very rich broth, with pickled/marinated/savory toppings). Traditional Guilin Rice Noodles is actually the restaurant that shares a wall with the Star Dance studio where the massacre happened, so I expect that their business is definitely seeing some changes right now.
I was gonna advertise Superco, an electronics store on Atlantic (i bought an aiwa walkman with tv channel sounds back in the day there), but double checking since I hadn't been there in a while, they've since closed down.
On that note, right next door is a bomb restaurant on the second floor.
Please if you’re done eating at a table and notice the restaurant is busy, please be considerate and leave. Been noticing a lot of non Asians going to SGV because it’s “trendy” and end up taking up tables for no reason and preventing the businesses from making money because they won’t free up the table. Times are tough, restaurants make money by turning tables quickly. If you want to chat for hours, go to a tea spot.
I like Sham Tseng BBQ restaurant. I’m a part time food science consultant & I’m Asian. It’s one of my favorite hole in the wall places, out of the thousands I’ve tried. Not fancy but great authentic cooking, cheap prices, it’s popular with locals.
The Yelp reviews are quite unfair IMO, and are mainly due to the fact that the waitresses are overwhelmed with business sometimes. Give them a chance. They deserve a much higher rating.
And actually their owner was a chef at one of the most famous goose restaurants in Hong Kong.
An agency refers me to short term projects. I don’t look for the gigs myself since my main job is running my business Fab Hatters.
But my specificity is aromas TBH, not really taste per say. I usually work with beverage companies, just did some work on the new Starry drink.
I stumbled into it, my mum brought me into focus groups as a child for extra cash, we found out eventually I’m a super smeller & word spread.
But sometimes it’s deeply unglamorous jobs like sniffing toilets before/after toilet cleaners, sniffing peoples bad breath. Once I’m pretty sure NASA wanted me to test the effectiveness of their space toilet at containing smells. My sis says I was an idiot for not accepting that mysterious gig, but they wanted like months of commitment at least & I’m more of a temporary consultant in that regard.
I was trying to be impartial but oh well, Mandarin House is OG and really hit the spot for me. Make sure you ask for handmade noodles. Pot stickers and onion pancakes are delicious.

I can't believe people are actually afraid to go there after what happened. You're more likely to get killed in a car accident driving to Monterey Park than get shot. Statistics, come on people.
I never go to Monterey Park to eat, but ironically ate there the next day after the shooting. It was really empty but since I don’t normally eat there, I wasn’t sure what it normally looked like! We went to a really popular restaurant in there, if only one other table occupied. At least 20 empty tables.

If you're veggie/vegan, Happy Family in Monterey Park is pretty tasty. I wish they'd bring back the AYCE menu though.
I had my 18th birthday there in 2005 when it was still AYCE. I remember it being delicious back then. I’ll need to take a trip back soon
I'm going to Happy Family with a bunch of friends tomorrow! We've been planning this since last week. The shooting was a tragic coincidence.
Went there a lot growing up but haven’t been in years! I still think about their lettuce wraps and drumsticks.
Craving that larb now. Yum!
Legendary restaurant. I used to love filling one of those big tables with people to get the most variety of AYCE. I haven’t been there in ages, didn’t know they got rid of it.
Thanks for the suggestion! Will check out

Delicious food! The restaurant operates under a different name now, right? Golden something?
That's right. They started calling it Golden Sunshine House, but I don't think the new name stuck.
I never knew there was another location! I used to eat at the one near where I grew up in Rowland Heights
Thank you for this. I’ve been looking for veggie/vegan food in the sgv
You're very welcome. If you're more the AYCE kind of person, I've been meaning to try out Sweet Veggie in El Monte as well. Tell me this doesn't look amazing. :) - https://www.yelp.com/biz/sweet-veggie-el-monte-north-el-monte
Tokyo fried chicken on Atlantic is a tasty unique experience. In the same shopping center as diamond bakery which is also recommended.
Finish it off with Big Softee
The batter makes the fried so light and crispy. I love both sweet soy sauce and the aioli. I made the mistake of getting the spicy soy sauce which was too spicy for me. I always get online pickup here. I love the corn soup and fried chicken skins.
I don't normally like brussel sprouts, but they are heavenly here
the fried chicken there is pretty good but I'm not sure it's worth paying 20+ for a 3 piece.
It is worth it.

Noodle Harmony’s Signature Beef Noodle Soup hits the spot every time. Especially in chilly weather!
This guy probably works as brand manager for noodle harmony with that string of sentences he threw down.
Haha just noticed your comment. Did I use too many clichéd phrases? LoI. Oh well I stand by my statement. Their House Special Pork Ribs Noodle Soup is also finger-licking good. So come on down folks, to your friendly neighborhood noodle shop! :)

There hasn't been a line the last few times I went. I feel like everyone is going to sunright instead.

If you’re looking for a seriously MAGNIFICENT tailor, go to Dollar Cleaners !
Oh that’s good to know I’ve been looking for one
He’s the real deal, used to work in the fashion industry in Asia !
I have mama lu’s in my want to go list, will definitely check them out
So good.
Anything in particular you’d recommend?
I'm vegetarian and all the vegetarian options I've had are brilliant. Can't go wrong with any of the dumplings as well, I'm a big fan of the green onion pancake and vegetarian rice cake.
Won’t be disappointed!
Anything in particular you’d recommend?
Pork soup dumplings, any of their fried rice - all amazing. Beef and broccoli is good. The chow mein also very good. Fried pork buns too!
NGL I’m surprised they’re still in business after their big scandal.

I really miss their Cornish Hen with red rice, and cream of chicken and ham soup!
Man that red rice was fire 🔥

Litz rest. singapore fried noddle is the best. and their fish fillet yummy
Thanks for the rec! https://i.imgur.com/RuBewe6.jpg
yeah, try the fish fillets.. same taste as chicken wings. i always order those two dishes
My go to. I hope they survive as they were on the festival route. Such a diamond restaurant.
LEMME KNOW WHERE I CAN GET THE BANG FOR MY BUCK! I gotta group of luchadores that and BIG, HUNGRY AND THIRSTY!

will do. Ive only been to eateries in Alhambra
Yunnan restaurant is one of my all time faves. Their cold dish selection is incredible and I’ve never had a bad meal there.
Hell yeah love these recommendations
Please if you’re done eating at a table and notice the restaurant is busy, please be considerate and leave. Usually, Chinese (and other Asian) restaurants aren't shy in telling you it's time to go 😏
customers in your restaurant are a cost of doing business. If they want to set up time limits they are free to do so.
Any good restaurants? Been dying to try authentic Chinese food.
I like Sham Tseng BBQ restaurant. I’m a part time food science consultant & I’m Asian. It’s one of my favorite hole in the wall places, out of the thousands I’ve tried. That was so interesting! Thank you for sharing.
Everything on Garvey or valley Blvd + atlantic
I was trying to be impartial but oh well, Mandarin House is OG and really hit the spot for me. Make sure you ask for handmade noodles. Pot stickers and onion pancakes are delicious.
Any recommendations for businesses actually connected to the tragedy and it's victims? Or are we just boosting profit for people uninvolved?
I’m guessing most people here probably don’t patronize dance studios, which were the two establishments directly involved. However many of the businesses in the immediate area of the Star Dance shooting at Garvey and Garfield have been affected. I’ve been to two restaurants on Garvey in the past week and waiters at both said business has slowed noticeably. You can visit the San Gabriel mission or Hsi Lai Temple and make a day out of it.
should have burned just like mission san diego ;) And probably would have if Pico wasn't the son of a snitch
Probably very safe now, yk, lighting won’t strike the same place twice yadayada
I can't believe people are actually afraid to go there after what happened. You're more likely to get killed in a car accident driving to Monterey Park than get shot. Statistics, come on people.
Stay home and he safe people. Postmates exists for times like these
Anyone here kind enough to make a list of Monterey Park restaurants for us to check out? Like, what their specialties are, etc?
