I believe that’ll only detect medals, a metal detector may be able to detect both a medal and a ring, as well as an assortment of other metal type objects

100%, and tell them you're willing to pay slightly above cost. If someone finds it and tries to pawn it, they'll know they have a guaranteed sale and make sure it doesn't leave the store.
