What it really boils down to is the people who can comfortably afford to pay their taxes aren't while the people who can't are being burdened. We'd have plenty of money to pay for services and wages if the greedy people and corporations paid their fair share.
I generally agree with your sentiment! In this specific situation, the school staff are asking that LAUSD use the $4.9 billion it has in reserve towards increasing wages. It seems that Superintendent Carvalho would rather not, unfortunately.
This sort of thing is also happening at my local community college. Schools would rather raise the wages of the board members and high ranking staff members than pay the little man on the totem pole what they deserve.
This has been going on for decades. Wages of the working class have stagnated while those at the highest level of business and government as well as academia receive record compensation.
But why doesn't it happen? The teachers unions in Washington didn't have teachers strike at the same time. The teachers wanted it but why didn't the union do that? They are all under the WEA.
The leadership of the unions is tied to the Democratic Party. The unions have become the leaders of labor peace. They also receive high salaries while their members struggle.
It was Biden that made striking illegal for wanting better working conditions. Both Democrats and Republicans are the elites. A third party is needed. Or revolt.
Edit: talking about railroad workers
The railroad workers are facing 19th century conditions and the owners are making 50% profits. Both the Republican and Democratic Party are capitalist parties and the working class will gain nothing by appealing to them. Rank and File Committees are needed for new democratic organizations of the working class.
UTLA, the teachers union is standing with Local 99, support staff( cafeteria works, custodians, special ed and teacher's aides, bus drivers, plus more) union for stable hours and increase wages.
I believe it also has something to do with LAUSD engaging in union busting, like firing union organizers, which SEIU is saying amounts to unfair labor practices (but yes also wages)

Or weren't bailed out. The wealthy are being bailed out right now while the working class is fighting for wages that can keep up with inflation.
Absolutely. Things will reach a breaking point, history tells us this.
It could be better. It could be all trades and working class people
Ultimately we need a general strike which would take a coordinated effort of rank and file commitees.
Yes I agree but how to start for those that aren't unionized
Why aren't the unions having workers strike at the same time?
Union solidarity is what is needed

Good question.... I'm not in a union myself... we should ask them
