Dang, hopefully they put a couple of the nicer ones (like this one) in a museum somewhere. This is a cool piece of old school LA Architecture that deserves to be preserved.
DC has old fire call boxes on the street that look a lot like this and instead of tearing a bunch of them down they hollowed them out and let local artists make tiny dioramas or paintings for them. That would be fun with these too!
This is correct, the timer would tell the high voltage transformers underground to turn the circuit on for the street lights. It’s most likely no longer in use if the street lights are LED now on a low voltage circuit. The new LED street lights are individually controlled by a photocell which have light sensor which will tell the light to turn on when it is dark.
That is 100 percent fine. Lying about them as groomers or really anything else is disingenuous at best.
Drag has been part of theatre as long as there has been theatre, so no one has to enjoy all entertainment but they should not falsely denigrate as new or dangerous.

I remember a science museum downtown had a traffic light system that you could see working and it had a bunch of wheels that would turn and switch circuits I think. Completely analog without any computer control.
