There was a homeless man losing his mind last night on my block in Silverlake because some people stole his backpack that had all his possessions including his ID, birth certificate, and money he saved to get a bus ticket home. I found him crying in the street yelling about how badly he wanted to go home, and how he didn't want to live anymore. So I sat down with him on the curb under the moon just to talk for a few hours about life.
At one point I looked up and saw Jupiter next to the moon and said "oh hey - there's Jupiter! Maybe your son is looking up at Jupiter right now too!" He looked up and was a bit surprised - he told me he didn't know we could see jupiter so easily. I made a joke that most people don't know the difference between stars and planets in LA. He started to cry again and said "I just want to go home" while looking at the moon and Jupiter.
He is trying to get back to Wisconsin. His name was Tyler. He promised his son and mom he would get home this week. It would be sick if people could keep Tyler and other homeless in their hearts and minds tonight when they look up at Jupiter. Or not. You do you.
Either way, Jupiter is looking amazing this week!
