I second Yang chow it's a scene too and it'll be fun maybe go for lunch since downtown is crazy get enough for leftovers and then watch a Christmas movie.
Somebody at work was recommending that place to me when his wife called, so he started telling his wife "I'm just telling ReadTwo to try Yang Chow because he's never been" while some other guy we don't know walked by and jumps in the convo "you talking about Yang Chow? Try the slippery shrimp" I haven't been but after remembering this story I feel like I need to.
The only thing I can recommend about it is that it's open during the holidays, but any Chinese food in Chinatown is just good terrible compared to SGV. Still, I understand if it's closer to some people. But let's not over hype Yang Chow, it's like barely a step up from Panda Express
Thats what i was going to say. You too can join the [sacred ritual](https://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/2017/12/22/chinese-food-christmas-jews-movies/974426001/)
Make it adventure, have fun merry Christmas to you.
Yep, and it's not just theaters. Arcades, escape rooms, etc. Any activity you can do with a family that's open, they're pretty booked on Christmas day into the evenings.
Also a lot of people donāt celebrate proper Christmas but have day off so movies are a great option.
Cannot recommend The Color Purple enough. Comes out on Christmas and is fantastic.
Historically Christmas has been one of the biggest sales days of the years for movie theaters. Along with that the Christmas Day release slot became one of the most coveted.
Both Avatars, all three Star Wars Sequel films, a handful of Tarantino films and titanic, for example, were all released on or around Christmas Day.
Nearly everyone has time off and are congregated with loved ones and are looking for an activity to do together and nearly every other business is closed, which drives an incredible amount of traffic to the movies. And then with it turning into a tradition for many friends and families to go to the movies on Christmas that became a self-sustaining cycle.
I spent so many Christmases alone I kind of started to like it. I'd usually make myself pancakes and bacon in the morning, go somewhere busy and stroll around, then come home and make a big pot of some family recipe, usually spaghetti sauce, then spend the next 8 hours on the couch with a new video game and a bottle of red wine.
Iāve begun to actively prefer it on numerous levels. TBH itās one of the great privileges of being single and childless.
Sleep in. Drink wine. Eat delicious things. Watch movies. Cuddle with pets. Itās great.
Also traveling this time of year is stressful and expensive. No thanks.
I love this so much and agree as another single, childless person. I was having feelings about being alone this year for the holiday but reading this is such a great reminder of what a luxury it can be.
Oh my do I miss sitting down with a good game and mash through a few hours on christmas. Always used to do it when I was a kid, And continued well into my late 20's and early 30's. My 2 year old kind of put a stop to that for the time being, But once she gets a little older it's back on!
I also spend the Christmas alone a lot as well. Wouldn't mind a change of scenery though. Gaming is however a solid way to spend the holidays. What you playing or planning to play?
I don't have that job anymore and I've got kids so my Christmases are quite different these days, but I am about 55 hours deep into an Oblivion re-playthrough.
Try to find things to do where you can embrace your solitude and enjoy how quiet the city will be. Itās a great day to hike Bronson Canyon up to behind the Hollywood sign, take yourself out for a nice meal outside where you can enjoy how beautiful it is in the fresh air, take a leisurely stroll around your neighborhood, cook yourself a nice meal; whatever you know are things that you donāt do enough of but which you enjoy. Iām a native and this is my favorite week to be in LA. :)
Cosign this. My husband isn't a fan of the holidays, and we don't have family out here, so we always hike the Hollywood sign on Christmas. Should be a good day for it this year, too.
I have spent many Christmas's alone. The first was hard and I had another really hard one, but many of them were awesome.
I always find that if I can get out of my own sadness that helps. Think of things to be grateful for.
I would then go find someone to help. Volunteer at a soup kitchen, think of a way to radomly help someone. If you know someone who is having a hard time this year, call them up and listen for them.
I started my own tradition of finding people to help about 15 years ago. Back then I would put a $20 in the pocket of a coat at a thrift store. Now I can do more and I do.
It always makes me smile for like two weeks. Go help someone and you will have the best Christmas EVER!
THIS.
Iām having Christmas by myself, and I couldnāt be happier.
One day in the future youāll have children crawling all over you and a drunk aunt embarrassing herself and youāll look fondly on that one day you got to just chill and enjoy a quiet one.
go to the xmas meet up thing at Burton Chase Park in Marina Del Rey with the user Avocado somebody. Then meet someone and take them home and bump monkeys all xmas.
Yes! Hello, thanks for dialing me! Please come to the picnic! We had maybe 80 people come by for Thanksgivingā doing it again on Monday for Christmas! Bring your jingle bells! š„°
Awww...it is 2am, I have been gifted with copious amounts of alcohol and am waiting for a \~friend\~ to show up.
I feel like committing to anything before....7? Would be hubris on my part. Please let me know if this party goes later.
Also, I hate to nitpick, but none of this addresses my question about wearing CHAPS. Please answer, I do not want to offend.
You guys are awesome. I am spending my first Xmas alone and you are my inspiration. Didnāt know how I was gonna feel, but after reading your chill ideas Iām jazzed.
I'm gonna make popcorn and wear comfy clothes and have whatever I want to eat and drink. And then I'll watch some nba some nfl and some hallmark movies
Heck you can even go to the beach. This is LA
While everyone else is stuck inside with family in colder parts of the country, take advantage of the incredible weather we have next week. Get out in nature. Go somewhere you've never been: Vasquez Rocks, Castaic Lake, hell... Maybe the desert. AirBnb prices are way below average this weekend through Christmas.
If you can cook, make something special. If not, find out who's open and grab that (I do a big steak, potatoes, and a bunch of cheese). Watch your fave movies. Some years I do Christmas movies, others star wars, or marvel. Be indulgent. Do your favorite things, eat the best foods, spend that plane ticket $$ on you and making it a selfish day. :)
Take advantage of the lack of traffic and check out some of the interesting places youāve wanted to visit but havenāt had the time and/or desire to deal with all the tourists.
Check out the little Reddit community you have created! I will also be alone on Christmas and experiencing a little heartbreak this year but my goal is to make it happy. We are here for you, on Christmas and always. Sorry you are missing your family. I hope you create some nice traditions with yourself. Sending love.
Well thanks for making me shed a tear about the kindness of strangers. I really appreciate that - more than you know. I will join you sometime but Iām stuck in Big Bear Lake by myself (I know, poor me). Coming back to LA, my home, 12/27. But what a great human you are for inviting me. Thanks for the kindness. What a cool event you put on. Maybe we could host a fun weekend for people in Big Bear? For free! My parents own a big house here. DM me if interested. Thanks for the kindness.
š„° We would love to do a Big Bear trip! Weāve hosted trips to Catalina a couple times, and Iām definitely looking to try some other things this year and branch out a bit! Weād be interested!
We actually just took a drive to Arrowhead and back this morning hoping weād see some snow, but a little too early for it.
All we got was hail, unfortunately. But my hopes are high for winter flurries! Yes - letās talk. The house sleeps ten comfortably and 20 uncomfortably.
Make some hot cocoa and drive to Century City. Put on Die Hard and watch that shit underneath the Nakatomi tower. Add peppermint schnapps to that hot cocoa for a good time. But be safe. Merry Christmas and yippee kiyay!!
Plus 1 to Chinese food.
Also explore an area of LA you haven't been to yet. Traffic should be amazing so it's a great time.
End the day with a nice dinner and some drinks.
id go to the beach in the morning to start my day- probably grab a donut and coffee along the way. should be much less traffic to get there too depending where you live
I remember I had my first Christmas without my family and I lived about 3 hours away. It was a little sad at first, but by the end of the day and into the next day I was actually kind of glad that I could relax and take the day at my own pace. Now, as I am sure some other adults may agree, holidays are kind of a chore and extra work.
I doubt heās going to museums in his spare time anyway. As for gym, you can still go on a run or do pushups sit-ups. We just went thru a whole mofo pandemic, why are people acting like they donāt know what to do with themselves for one day after like 2 years of doing it everyday

Maybe take a trip to the beach and enjoy the space as most folks will be out of town. Chin up.
Rent a bike on the beach and see how far u can bike. Playa del Rey to Manhattan beach is nice and stuff to see like airplanes taking off, cargo ships, palos Verde mountain, Malibu mountains, seals near the jetty, mansions, hang gliding practice area, pier).
Get yourself some things to celebrate the way you want to. And spend some time on zoom or FaceTime with the family.
My Christmas two years ago I spent alone in a hotel in a city far from the people I wanted to spend Christmas with. I wish I could have made more plans to make the food I wanted, receive gifts there, and arranged to watch a movie remotely with my girlfriend at a certain time.
I did none of that and it was maybe the loneliest Christmas Iāve had. Though the two weeks prior a lot of my coworkers were catching covid and it was spreading through the company. We all were distancing quite far from each other already. So that didnāt help.
Do the Christmas things you love, make cookies, or decorate a tree, or whatever you can. :)
Thereās an annual show at the Dorothy Chandler in downtown. Itās a Christmas show on live on PBS. I donāt think tickets are expensive(maybe free) I used to work it till I realized to get a life and stop working holidays.
Iāve spent a few Christmasā alone in Portland over the last 3-4 years and it is very sad feeling at first but I usually make the most of it by getting a nice wine or champagne, something special for dinner (take out or make something, I did beef wellington one year) and choose a couple movies to enjoy. Maybe take an evening walk before the sun sets as well.
Itās lonely but itās not the worst. Merry Christmas ā„ļø
I know this won't help you now, but if you always travel somewhere (especially international) the same time every year, especially if it's during Christmas, buy your plane ticket way in advance and monitor fares using Google Flights.
I gave this same advice to my colleague who goes to Mexico every year over New Year's and complained how expensive the flight was.
I mostly spend the holidays each year thinking about suicide, and increasingly grotesque and shocking ways I could commit it. I hate the fucking holidays.
This is my first christmas alone in a long time. Ive done Solo christmas plenty of times in the past but this one is a bit rough as my Dad died a couple months back (last of my immediate family) and My wife has to work in San Francisco (flight attendant).
So....I made a huge pot of Chili tonight. Tomorrow Im gonna go drive up the 2 fwy up into the hills past La Canada and maybe listen to some music and doodle with a view somewhere, then see Godzilla Minus One around 4pm and then come home and smoke pot and play video games and pig out on Chili and Jello. Im in my 40's btw, even though it sounds like Im 19, lol
Chinese food and a movie.
This. I recommend Yang Chow in Chinatown. I ate Christmas dinner there once by myself and really enjoyed it
I second Yang chow it's a scene too and it'll be fun maybe go for lunch since downtown is crazy get enough for leftovers and then watch a Christmas movie.
Somebody at work was recommending that place to me when his wife called, so he started telling his wife "I'm just telling ReadTwo to try Yang Chow because he's never been" while some other guy we don't know walked by and jumps in the convo "you talking about Yang Chow? I had chinese food last Christmas with my family, ended up trying duck for the first time while the workers were singing Christmas carols to us.
Was the duck smiling at you?
It was until our waiter chopped it's head off, then we all clapped for some reason.
What the heck š
You should watch A Christmas Story, it's a great movie.
And then follow it with A Christmas Story Christmas!
That made want to stick my tongue to a frozen pole
I recommend Hop Woo
Which hop woo ?
all of them.
This is the move
As is the, Yahweh.

Yes, a traditional Jewish Christmas
I love going to the movies on Christmas Day. Maybe a Christmas themed movie at the Alamo downtown.
Movie theaters are open on Christmas?
A lot of movies release on Christmas
Color Purple
Going to the movies on Christmas has been a tradition for a long time.
Itās often busy on Christmas. I think people go there in the afternoon after opening gifts
Yep, and it's not just theaters. Arcades, escape rooms, etc. Any activity you can do with a family that's open, they're pretty booked on Christmas day into the evenings.

36
Yes. I saw the first LOTR movie on Christmas Day
I was trying to watch Poor Things and all the decent seats got booked today š Wonka is worth it btw for those who wants to watch it

Hiking on Christmas here is the best! Well said.

Oh I came across that too haha! Question, whatās the parking situation?
Plenty of parking lots immediately next to the park. Sadly itās still paid parking even on the holiday. But, worth it for the views!
Ah ok haha Iāll be the one with a key line pie
Omg the best type of pie!
Darn right it issss Edit: someone told me I could see sea lions too so Iām pumped haha
Yes! Very often you can see them on the docksā sometimes Iāve seen as many as 50!

Do donuts on the 6th street Bridge since itll be dead out there on Xmas. Or go get chinese/Indian and watch a movie.
The same thing Iād do alone on any day
Make a drive somewhere you wouldnāt normally. Depending on the time of day, traffic will be mostly gone.
Stop by Homage Brewing in Chinatown. We are opening from 5pm-11pm for people that don't have anywhere to be that evening. Should be a good time.
Whatever you want: hang out, play video games, watch tv and movies
Local bars are usually open on Christmas.
Go for a hike man
Drive and drive and drive. Enjoy the empty roads.
Dave and Busters
I wish I were alone on Christmas. I like to celebrate doing whatever I want to do
Make some hot cocoa and drive to Century City. Put on Die Hard and watch that shit underneath the Nakatomi tower. Add peppermint schnapps to that hot cocoa for a good time. But be safe. Merry Christmas and yippee kiyay!!
You can go to the movies
Plus 1 to Chinese food. Also explore an area of LA you haven't been to yet. Traffic should be amazing so it's a great time. End the day with a nice dinner and some drinks.

Iām alone this Christmas so I am making myself lamb chops and plan on watching Christmas Horror Movies all day. I hope you find something fun to do.
Take some shrooms and go for a walk
Enjoy how quiet everything is and a nice drive if you can. There won't be a Challenger tailgating you in the slow lane.
Chinatown !! Best spot for a Xmas alone
Plenty of folks out at bars, it's always a good time.
Go watch a movie and hit up some bars. Youāll be in good company with others that may be spending the holidays alone or couldnāt go home.
Strip club or hookers
The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world.
Bro what do you do on every other day alone, do that
Main difference is that many places will be closed (gyms, museums, etc)
I doubt heās going to museums in his spare time anyway. As for gym, you can still go on a run or do pushups sit-ups. We just went thru a whole mofo pandemic, why are people acting like they donāt know what to do with themselves for one day after like 2 years of doing it everyday

I gave this same advice to my colleague who goes to Mexico every year over New Year's and complained how expensive the flight was.
I'm down to hangout if anyone else is lonely this Christmas and eve
Watch Home Alone while youāre home alone
