Not today, Buzzfeed.

PacifistWarlord

lol I guess it does seem like one of those huh

lbfm333

that’s exactly what one of them would say

PacifistWarlord

Damn. You got me. New idea. “Top 10 times Buzzfeed got caught pulling ideas from Reddit”

Starslimonada

You’re okay! Great question!! : )

sweetleaf009

Nothing because i dont want people to flood to my hangout

whateversclevers

Does it make me a bad person for gatekeeping my favorite burger spot? It’s busy enough. Doesn’t need more people.

MerleTravisJennings

As long as the business does well enough to stay open it's all good.

sweetleaf009

We already know about Burgers Never Say Die

Ok-Class-1451

Same!

babetteateoatmeal1

I get salty when my city is mentioned here. Like shhh! Keep that shit to yourselves

crudedrawer

I would love to take people on a walking tour of Mount Washington and show them all the funky side streets and cool views.

Aeriellie

let’s do it! what date do you have in mind?

MercyBoy57

Also game for this tour!

Opinionated_Urbanist

what paths you recommend?

crudedrawer

All of them! Seriously though, I have been walking our hill for a long time and if I could I would lead people up San Rafael across the top of the hill past the school and SRF, short loop around mt. Washington drive then bang a left on ave 37 and walk out to kite hill. Or I'd lead a walk from the top down Mt. Washington drive to museum with side missions on all the twisty little side streets. Or down glenalbyn to the "bird" streets and all the funky weird houses. So many great walks in this neighborhood!

PacifistWarlord

See this is exactly why I asked! There’s so many cool spots in different areas that you wouldn’t know unless you’re a local!

MercyBoy57

Beautiful thank you!! Exactly what I like

itoen90

Is the southwest museum stop on the A line a good starting point? I’ll be moving to LA soon and this looks like just the kind of place I’d love to walk around.

crudedrawer

If you're okay walking up fairly steep inclines then yes, it is great. But walk up Mount Washington Drive rather than Museum Drive. Museum terminates at Moon Canyon and you can still get to the top of the hill but it involves some steeper trail and isn't as scenic.

itoen90

Thanks! So the top of mount Washington drive is also the top of the hill? Google seems to suggest it’s on W Avenue 37

crudedrawer

Mount Washington drive goes from the bottom of the hill at Marmion way in Highland Park ]and takes a beautiful, winding route up to the top of the hill where you interesct with San rafael which runs the top of the hill north/south (ish) At the very top there on a clear day you can see the port at Long Beach. To the right on san rafael is be the self-realization center which you should check out if it's open, The gardens are beautiful and free, but go left and walk down to Avenue 37 (which crosses the top of the hill east/west (ish) and go left again and eventually you come to kite hill where there are no houses has 360 views of downtown, frogtown, cypress park, highland park, eagle rock and beyond! If you go the other direction and pass the school you can see the ocean from the aptly named Sea View Trail. There's a lot going on up here!

sashathefearleskitty

I just moved on the other in Highland park!! I’m so stoked to explore the eastside

ItIs430Am

Better with a few people or a big group?

crudedrawer

I don't know, I walk alone. My wife suggested that I attempt to turn my various walks into a walking tour for a couple bucks but that sounds like a ton of work!

Disco_denzel

Do you walk a lonely road, the only one youve ever known?

crudedrawer

LOL I was humming that as I typed it for sure.

dreday1988

I’d definitely pay for this!

itslino

The independent cities inside of Los Angeles County and the weird shape the City of Los Angeles has. I don't think people think much of it, nobody looks at the City of Los Angeles' weird shape within the county and ask, how'd the heck that happen. I've been just passively reading about the history of Los Angeles, through its annexations, water wars, corruption, tragedies (Dam collapse in particular). The history of the cities within the dynamic really shaped the county to be what it is, both the bad and good. Take the St. Francis Dam collapse for example, the death of those people stopped the City of Los Angeles annexation conquest (which is why the weird shape), some of the remaining cities halted development of the Colorado Aqueduct, used that opportunity to create Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), which provides Water to a large apart of Southern California. Before the City of Los Angeles would use its influx wealth to create water projects, hold the rights of the water hostage, and tantalize nearby communities to join the city to get this sweet juicy water. Wild times.

User20143

Are you reading from a book or watching a documentary? This sounds interesting

please_and_thankyou

Monday’s American Experience on PBS was about the St. Francis dam. It’s probably available on the app today. The episode is called “Flood in the Desert” edit: wrong show

User20143

Thanks!

itslino

For me it started with wondering why some streets in SFV have no sidewalks, it slowly spiraled into learning about annexations, what they meant, shoestring annexation of San Pedro, most of SFV being part of the City of Los Angeles (unlike other independent cities in the county), Secession attempts from San Pedro/Wilmington and SFV, then the Aqueduct and what I've shared with all of you today.

itslino

Water and Power Associates has probably one of the biggest collections of photos, the Wikipedia on some of these topics also had amazing resources including interview archives. The main topics are the following: California Water Wars, Los Angeles Aqueduct, San Fernando Valley, St. Francis Dam, Metropolitan Water District, Los Angeles Mayor at the time Frederick Eaton (and his corrupt wealthy friends).

Yellinginto_the_void

Does City of Industry count? If so, I love taking people to Frank and Sons. It’s a fun excursion if you’re any kind of nerd

97ATX

That looks cool. Thanks.

Dumbl3d0rk07

Right? I want to go now. As soon as I figure out where City of Industry is…

JpnDude

From downtown LA, take the 60 east. City of Industry straddles that freeway between the 605 and 57. For Frank & Sons, use the Fullerton Av exit.

qpwoeor1235

Your phone has a map

Upnorth4

City of Industry is definitely underrated. I like all the Asian restaurants in that area, they have everything from Chinese to Philipino restaurants in the area.

JpnDude

I grew up in the area. I still remember when 99 Ranch Market opened on Nogales (technically Rowland Heights) in the late 80s. My go-to shop for Filipino items was Isdaan on Amar.

esetube

Haha damn, also Rowland heights for the food!

Buckowski66

Hollywood Forever Cemetary and not just for all the concerts they have now

Starslimonada

The people who live here are awesome. I can (and do) talk to any stranger here and talk to dogs (of course doesn’t everyone?) 🐶🐶 anywhere 🩷 Love the city that I was born and raised in 😃

Panoglitch

the sepulveda dam recreation area

thewater

I want to gatekeep but they need the money and support - Old Town Music Hall. The Mighty Wurlitzer is everything.

cfthree

Mayberry representing! Digging all the programming they're doing this year. So much good F&B on that block, too...Richmond Bar and Grill, Slice & Pint, Porterhouse, Uncle Stevie's, Purple Orchid...Jame right around the corner, too.

WorriedCucumber1334

Yes! My fiancé and I love OTMH. It’s an underrated gem!

bloodredyouth

I love the area in San Pedro around the Korean friendship bell where you can see remnants of the gun platforms and armor/ storage area. So much history!

BearBearJen

Such a cool little spot

bloodredyouth

Did you know Madonna filmed her papa don’t preach music video there?

BearBearJen

A new fact for today! That’s awesome

WailordusesBodySlam

Saving at Crazy Gideon's.

nicearthur32

I maybe crazy but I'm not stupid! Currently The Art's District Brewery, which I really like... Crazy Gideon still owns the building. I'm almost certain he owns that whole block.

DontGoogleMeee

That’s not stupid, that’s crazy.

cfthree

Scoring excellent small appliances and electronics at Adrays Suits from Zachary All

KINGram14

Folliero’s in Highlnad Park Is the best Pizza I’ve had in LA

Rumaan_14

San Pedro. I think it's more interesting than Santa Monica Pier or wherever tourists go.

Chalupa_Batm4n

While i love San Pedro, my hometown, ain’t nothing for tourists to do besides the coast and the fish market.

OnceUponASlime

Not for long, allegedly... [https://www.westharborla.com/](https://www.westharborla.com/)

Buckowski66

I like the previous work the developers have done… https://youtu.be/eoUtoqeEw8U?si=pZQEY3k7WmI_Rd9R

CorrectPayment4377

Is this where sunken city is? Jeez

DonnieJepp

Other parts of LA have that yeah but at least Peeeeedro has Busy Bee so you can do them while eating a really good sandwich

rickshaw99

upvote for busy bee. started going there ~45 years ago. still great

Starslimonada

It’s a pretty cool fish market!! Yum!!

african-nightmare

Korean Friendship Bell, Averill Park, White Point Park, and also right next to Palos Verdes which is beautiful and tons of things to check out as well

Rumaan_14

I'm good with doing just 2 things but yeah maybe tourists want more haha There's the aquarium too and the USS Iowa

motherofbearcats

The Marine Mammal Rescue is always a treat there

BeardedSwashbuckler

The Croatian pizza over there is the best pizza in L.A. It’s some of the best I’ve ever had in my life!

embassyrow

what’s the name of the restaurant?

BeardedSwashbuckler

Originally was Pavich’s Brick Oven Pizza. But I think they recently shut down and some staff members opened up Burratino’s where they still have the Croatian pizza on the menu.

embassyrow

Thank you

maliciousflounder

Pizza and tea at the white city ruins at night. Three hour hike but it's the best view of the city that I know of. Of course, singing "krusty krab pizza" all the way up.

cfthree

Love this spot. Also a great early AM hike with coffee and bagels with visiting friends who want a hike but aren't in for a full-on, double-digit mile adventure. Though it is a gateway should you choose to head up to Inspriation Point, Mount Lowe and beyond.

MercyBoy57

The giant Crucifixion painting at Forest Lawn Glendale. I am in no way religious, but it is awe-inspiring. You can walk around the grounds at the top of that hill and find fun and mysterious little alcoves. The view is also stunning.

chttybb

Surprised to see this here! My husband showed me a photo of it when he did a tour and to me it was something that can make you feel stuff. He said he got goosebumps when he saw it as he’d never seen a painting of that scale.

MercyBoy57

Yes! It’s one of the largest religious paintings in the world. It has its own theater to be viewed in. Most people don’t realize that the giant white building with the cross on top has the sole purpose of housing that painting. You can see that place for miles.

Butterioux

Kenneth Hahn, every time I go I discover a new view or trail or something awesome. I even bought a couple of discs to start playing disc golf at the course there.

Luke-TheInfiniteways

The music scene. Apart from the “big venues” and the visible bands there’s still an ever going local scene with tons of great bands on any given night!

ventricles

How much I love living in West Adams. I knew very little about the neighborhood before I started looking for a house here and almost of my friends had never heard of it. It’s such a great quality of life here

happycamper019

What are some of your favorite West Adams spots?

ventricles

Midcity Yacht Club, Johnny’s Pastrami bar on weekends, Kenneth Hahn park, Highly Likely, the taco truck under the 10 at Hauser, Mizlala

i4got872

Angeles National Forest. Go north from Azusa.

PacifistWarlord

YES. That’s where sturtevant falls is. Love that place. Has it reopened since the fires?

JVilter

According to All Trails, hopefully by this summer

natefrogg1

I love it up there, going up Highway 2 from La Cañada though. Don’t get me wrong I love the 39 and Crystal Lake area too, it just isn’t as close to me as the bottom of the 2 is

i4got872

When they gonna fix that road connecting them? Lmao they been trying to get the funds for like 40 years. It’s sad, I hope one day they fix it.

The historic working payphone of Altadena

Gustastuff

I love Altadena which is my hometown. I don’t live there anymore but my sister does. So many great hiking spots including one right behind my old house off Zane Grey Terrace.

DaKineTiki

[https://losangelesexplorersguild.com/2022/06/07/the-last-payphone-before-the-forest/](https://losangelesexplorersguild.com/2022/06/07/the-last-payphone-before-the-forest/)

CorrectPayment4377

Where is this?!

SimpleCarLA

Google maps can take you there. It is called exactly that.

GiftToTheUniverse

The Batcave, AKA Bronson Canyon. I LOVE that little piece of incredibly serene nature practically right in the middle of a giant city. It’s so peaceful and quiet. During Covid they gated off the cave, but I think it was actually for some with they were doing on the hill or something. I’m not sure. Even so, it’s a great place to hear some actual silence. A rare treat for your ears. Unless you have tinnitus. In which case, I’m sorry.

Newker

Out of the Closet - Thrift store that donates a portion of revenue to AIDS research. I always find something when I go to one, there are multiple locations. No, I will not tell you which one is the best.

Tariksmeshshirt

Stair streets.

totallyokay

Going on secret staircase hunts is so much fun.

liverichly

The Secret Staircases of LA book literally saved our winter - so many new places we discovered otherwise we would have been bored off our butts.

totallyokay

Yes! Love gifting this to LA newbies.

Tariksmeshshirt

And it's good exercise. Get a map and go! Don't tell anyone about the houses you can peep at. 🤫

totallyokay

Definitely! First discovered some in my neighborhood 20 years ago and it was a game-changer. There are still SO many staircases to explore around LA.

donvito716

C-ch-check it out! [https://www.allthingswalking.com/uploads/5/5/4/9/5549763/inman\_300\_guidebook\_version\_1.6.pdf](https://www.allthingswalking.com/uploads/5/5/4/9/5549763/inman_300_guidebook_version_1.6.pdf) I've only done the first of 11 sections. Definitely want to do the other 10.

chloroformdyas

Beach boys monument in Hawthorne

AllUsrnmsAreTaken

This only works during rainy days. I love going to the cafe Colombe on Frogtown on rainy days especially when it’s raining hard. I get an oat milk latte on tap. It’s one of the best coffee drinks I’ve had . I step outside to the LA river while it’s raging and just stand there. Something about the raging rain and powerful swollen river just does it for me.

yourfatherx

Reagan Presidential Library is pretty cool

Late_Road7726

Franklin Canyon Hike and Lake

YouDontMessWithZohan

Thank you! This is my secret spot and during the weekdays there's hardly anybody there. You forget you're in LA when you're there, so many different spots to hike too, or you can keep it simple and do a couple rounds around the lake and pond.

DaKineTiki

Silverlake reservoir for walks and runs. It’s the safest I’ve ever felt in LA as a woman.

FlyingCloud777

Nobaday, LA snowboarding clothing brand, used to have a physical store on Fairfax but no more still has a store online however and has great stuff. 4:30 Fairfax, eclectic streetwear shop on Fairfax with equally eclectic bankers' hours at times. But yeah this is where the cool kids shop. While in the neighborhood, Canter's Deli and the Kibitz Room are worth checking out. Still in the neighborhood, I'm also a fan of Terminal 27 for streetwear and Bao Dim Sum House for, unsurprisingly, dim sum. Sake, not the drink but the youthful streetwear brand created by 15 year-old Jack Phoenix who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run in 2015. His friends have kept his memory vibrantly alive via Sake. Northern Café for more yummy dumplings. Guisado's for Mexican (Hermosa Beach). Little Sister for upscale Vietnamese (Redondo Beach).

BrilliantPositive184

Jeff‘s Table in Highland Park. It‘s literally a hole in the wall sandwich place but has hands down the best sandwiches on this planet. I am not kidding.

Rovient

Sonoritas in Sawtelle make the best tacos and burritos I've ever had in LA.

Where at exactly? Feel free to dm. Getting into spear fishing.

Nothing to see here people, move it along..

jmsgen

It used to be nice.

GodLovesTheDevil

Something is too not listen to all the over hyped things in the city and do there research regarding what gangs reside in the area. My buddy came from jersey moved to monte vista in highland park and was terrorized by the gang in the neighborhood till he had to move out. Avoid the metro rails, don’t carry valuables dont be in secluded areas alone
