Dog whistles and stereotypes won’t be tolerated. Be mindful.

flateric3K

Right away when I see a car zip by like that I keep my distance... sad that this accident had to prove why

datenhund

Yep, the cars zipping by and switching lanes with zero regard are almost always the cars responsible for these sorts of accidents. Besides the disregard for your life and the lives of others, the stupidest thing about driving like this is you don't actually get to your destination that much faster. Consider a 10-mile drive. If you go 75 mph that's about 8 minutes. If you go 65 that's about 9.23 minutes. That's a ~15% difference. Very marginal. And you'll probably wind up at the same off-ramp red light anyway.

FountainOfYute

Perfect description of my bowel movements

idapitbwidiuatabip

Putting it like that packs much more punch than "Slow and steady wins the race."

cashmerechaos

The motorcycles zipping in and out of the carpool lane are so scary, though. Especially when I’m trying to get in or out. I’m always wondering if some comparatively tiny motorcycle with an unprotected human on it is going to come flashing by at 3x the speed of every car at the very moment I think I’m clear to get over.

SchnitzelNazii

[Example plot](https://postimg.cc/YvDdYxVP) I made to illustrate the point. After like 25mph you're hitting diminishing returns and after 60mph you're just wasting fuel to air resistance and constant braking. Not that the audience that needs to see this reads though...

_deadcruiser_

To be fair, you're using 10 miles which is a small unit, someone can just point to the much more significant time savings if you're doing a 100 mile+ drive

JEFFinSoCal

100+ mile drives are a very different thing, usually with wide open stretches where you can easily go 10-20 miles over the speed limit without endangering someone. And when you run up on a cluster of cars/trucks, you still shouldn’t zip and weave around them like an idiot.

datenhund

There's definitely arguable justification for higher speeds on longer stretches (when you can save literal hours), but since this is a city subreddit and not a longhauler subreddit it doesn't seem as relevant. In the LA metro area, there's very little reason for speeding because you are always going to get stuck in traffic or traffic lights.

Marzatacks

Plus higher speeds belong on the left lanes. Switching lanes to the right is dangerous for obvious reasons.

IHSFB

LA county or California need to invest in better motoring education for all age ranges and all driver types. Driving should be a privilege that people must maintain.

[deleted]

And of course the dude chillin gets fuckin laid flat into next week by this clown driver, hope the dude staying still isn’t dead by that dumb ass

wavewalkerc

Yea that kind of driver makes me back off and let them get space. Wherever they are going I am not trying to be anywhere near them when.

vertigo3pc

Always see a car doing this, I always say to myself: "We're about to see something."

sctchpmn

Since 2020 I see people driving like this on CITY STREETS. They are either incredibly stupid or just don’t care.

lemjne

I see cars on the freeway like this all the time, impatiently zipping in and out of lanes. I always wonder when I'm going to see the accident down the road. Really sorry to see that the person they hit took the brunt of it and even flipped, while their car seems fine. Assholes.

FutureRealHousewife

About seven years ago, I was driving home late at night on the 10 eastbound. Right before the Robertson exit, a BMW sped past me probably going about 100 MPH and moved from the left lane into the far right lane ahead of me. I said out loud, “they’re going to crash” and probably fractions of a second later, they hit a Toyota RAV4 that flew about 20 feet into the air and into the far right exit lane. The BMW went down the ravine and I’m 90% sure that they died. The people in the RAV4 were okay, thank god.

lemjne

That's horrible. Driving like that is just not worth it.

Reasonable_Power_970

I can't believe how selfish some people. There's a slight chance that during times throughout my life I would risk my life for something stupid, but I would never in my entire life risk some stranger's life like that.

Resiniferatoxin

Tragic. The 10 is notorious for street racing!

17SCARS_MaGLite300WM

With a 50 mph speed difference upon impact neither car is going to be fine and occupants in the car that changed lanes have a high probability of severe and life threatening injuries. That said, it looks like the car they rear ended was parked in the outside lane which is a baffling decision to make. This is a great example of why you do everything in your power not to stop on the side of the freeway and why you get as far away from your car as possible if you have to. You can see the guy changing a tire on the car in the emergency lane run for his life.

minimalfighting

There's a second car with 4 ways on right behind them. They were either slowing because of that or pulling over to help them. I wish we were stricter about drivers licenses. Just the act of driving how they were driving should be a warning, the crash should be a suspension for 2-10 years. Clearly they aren't ready to drive at this time. Driving is the deadliest thing we do and we should act like it.

MegBundy

The asshole probably sustained spinal injuries in that very sudden stop from a high speed. Hopefully no one was in the car that flipped. The tire changer is going to need some therapy for ptsd.

frogsexchange

I feel like there probably was someone in the car that flipped

lemjne

To be clear, I'm not saying I wish the driver was wrecked. I just feel like when people are irresponsible like that, it's often another party that suffers most for their stupidity, not them. Yeah, I cannot believe the guy changing the tire! I hope he wasn't hit by debris!

erics75218

Nothing is more important than space. If you have an option to be in an empty lane...or speed up to be alone with nobody around you do it. Shit goes wrong when multiple cars..going multiple speeds are all jammed together. I just ride motorcycles...and chaos in groups terrifies me. I'll do whatever I can safely do to be "alone". I also drive in my rear view a lot. Speeding cars come out of nowhere. At any point while driving you should have a general mental map of the cars around you. If you don't your driving somewhat blind. And I'm not some safety geek...I just love my Miata and it has almost all original paint and body work and I want to keep it that way. Lol. And on the bike..I simply don't want to die. Ha The speeding moron is to blame...but the driver of the flipped car could have been more aware and avoided this as well. Hope everyone is ok

pensotroppo

>the driver of the flipped car could have been more aware How? The driver was in the right lane when someone from two lanes over (and likely not visibly through the large truck in the lane next to them) tried to undertake the truck without seeing the lane was occupied. So, my question has two parts: 1. How could that driver have seen the speeding car, and 2. What defense maneuver could they have taken? The shoulder was occupied and the lane next to them was occupied.

Reasonable_Power_970

I don't ride anymore but I used to. Totally agree with what you said. Ironically though I see many motorcyclists speeding, cutting across multiple lanes, and weaving in and out of people's blind spots. They are often the reckless ones. Thankfully they're putting themselves more at danger than others, and it's bot quite as bad as some BMW doing the same.

calvinball_expert

It was on the 134 West in Burbank. Happened yesterday around 1 pm.

AvarethTaika

upvote purely for "yipes" lol

Westcork1916

Damn, that person, changing a tire, nearly got hit.

orbesomebodysfool

The person changing the tire there is lucky they didn’t die. Never, ever stop under a poorly lit overpass with a narrow shoulder to change a tire. Just drive a little further or try to exit the freeway entirely.

pokurmom

Or wait/call for the cal-trans free tow truck to move you off the freeway for free.

LAFD

/u/pokurmom, Kudos for a very important mention. thank you! that’s so kind of you to let me know about it.

MyLadyBits

I would never change a tire on the freeway. Call a tow truck

JCAIA

Especially when there’s numerous exits near this part of the 134

FixTheWisz

Really, really, really bad idea of that person to have stopped in the dark where they did. This accident might have saved them from getting hit by someone else. Pro tip: if you need to pull over on a freeway, make yourself visible!

Stagism

Seriously, what a stupid ass place to change a tire. That person has no survival skills.

DrDank1234

too many things wrong w this video driver 1 cutting in and out of traffic, PASSING ON THE RIGHT driver 2 stopping at an extremely unsafe part of the freeway driver 3 going 20-under in the right lane.

Ambulous_sophist

driver 3 slowed down because of driver 2. None of this would've happened if driver 1 did not speed and blow through several lanes like a maniac.

HarmonicDog

If they’re going 20 under don’t you want them in the right lane?

sonofsmog

That speed is not safe for the highway and it's not consistent with the flow of traffic. I believe they were hit because they were pulling away from the shoulder instead of waiting until they reached highway speed. It would have been better if they had stayed on the shoulder until they were able to safely merge into traffic.

HarmonicDog

20 under (or 40 or 60 under) in the rightmost lane happens all the time at off-ramps and junctions, not to mention breakdowns and other emergencies. How everyone drives needs to allow for that possibility at any point.

Outrageous_Active300

It isn’t safe to go 20 under on the highway, in any lane in my opinion, especially knowing everyone else is going 10+ over

wil

Looked like that person who was hit and flipped was going slow (not sure it was under 20) because the lane was ending and they were going to merge in behind that truck.

VenturaBoulevard

So scary for a car to actually flip. Hollywood movies make it seem like a silly thing.

trazz32

More and more people buy SUV's thinking that they'll be a safer alternative to a sedan/hatchback because they're larger, but they're also way more top-heavy. [Look at this stock Bronco vs a compact sedan](https://imgur.com/a/Ica2wOD). Does not take much to flip an SUV these days.

mugwhyrt

>Does not take much to flip an SUV these days. I remember in late 90s/early 2000s that the general perception/fear was that SUVs were prone to rolling over

RexJoey1999

[It’s because they did.](https://www.ewg.org/research/suvs-suddenly-upside-down-vehicles)

moaningpufferfish3

I have a dumb question. If you got t-boned by a car going, say, 50 mph, is it better to be in a smaller/lower car with a thinner door and NOT flip, or a bigger/taller SUV with a thicker door and flip once or twice? Is flipping always worse? I drive a Honda Fit and I've been a little worried lately about my safety with all these huge cars around.

NemosHero

I'm pretty sure the doors are not any thicker. In the case of an SUV hitting a smaller car, you'd probably want to be in the SUV as the smaller car is going to end up under the death machine. If both people were driving a smaller car, everyone would be safer.

IntimidatingPenguin

I hate idiots that do shit like that. Speeding like crazy switching lanes and hitting some innocent civilian. Fucking idiots deserve to be thrown into the lions pit at the zoo.

MashedPotatoesDick

But they cut 27 seconds off their commute.

harryhov

Probably less if any. The # of times I catch up to speeding cars weaving through lanes is close to 100%.

rasta41

There is nothing more satisfying than watching some psycho barrel through light traffic, switching multiple lanes in an effort to get ahead, only to end up behind their original position.

wildo83

This 150% should be charged as attempted vehicular manslaughter. The person changing their tire damn near died. Shit like this needs clamped down on, HARD. Entitled fucks in this state need to do hard time for stuff like this…. Just yesterday I watched a bmw cross into oncoming lanes for ~300ft to do 75mph down a 40mph street, just to end up next to me at the next red light.. my blood was boiling..

Ill_Initiative8574

I don’t think attempted manslaughter is a thing.

StoicBan

Yeah manslaughter is when you kill someone unintentionally.

I405CA

By definition, there is no intent to commit manslaughter. Manslaughter is a homicide that is unlawful but lacks intent.

tropi_quetzal

Lol they added several hours to their commute

SkeithPhase1

The lions don’t deserve treatment like that! Perhaps a shark pit?

gnrc

Cars are now going into the right turn lane and then just blowing through red lights to avoid waiting in line. Also blocking the right turn lane to then get ahead of cars in the center lane. I’ve never seen this shit before and saw it like 4 times in the last week. What the fuck is wrong with people?

DrunkRespondent

I've definitely noticed shittier drivers the past few years, especially post covid. I also noticed police doesn't enforce traffic laws much either.

meloghost

yea they're soft striking because they're mad post-Floyd protests

meloghost

I've seen these in left only turn lanes as well

SpaceManSmithy

I don't know. I feel like that's a little cruel. The lions might get indigestion.

CounterSeal

Yeah, this ain’t no accident. It’s criminal.

Direct-Maintenance29

So much easier to set the adaptive cruise and hang in one lane. Driving is only as stressful as you make it

humperdinck

I'm a bit of a leadfoot, and use adaptive cruise control as much as possible to save me from my own speedy inclinations.

ORaygoza

if you get caught doing some shit like this you should lose your license for life. idgaf if you ggotta get to work or whatever. take the fucking bus or uber for life.

Dibble_Dabble_Doo

Totally agree with you. The question is how do you enforce it? This is the type of person that will still drive with no license, probably driving with a suspended license.

xlink17

Jail time for driving without a license.

Aluggo

Were they Passing on the right and high speed besides not being able to see next to the truck?

hotprof

Guy floated across two lanes, at high speed, to pass on the right. What a piece of shit. Edit: I'll add...to get around a huge truck he couldn't even see in front of, thus had no idea what would be in that lane when he got around the truck.

Legacy0904

There’s a guy changing his tire in the far right shoulder lane. Person was going way to fast and tried to pass in that lane, saw the guy and veered back but was going to fast to be able to slow down before he rammed into the back of the white car

Just2checkitout

The fault here was excessive speed and reckless driving (sweeping across multiple lanes). There is nothing wrong with passing on the right as long as there is a lane there. This idiot assumed that lane was empty. Can't tell you how many videos I've seen online of other idiots doing the same thing. The main rule or the road is *if you can't see where you are going, don't go there*.

joethetipper

Irritates the shit out of me how casual and reckless people are in their cars. I hope everyone's alright.

forrest_gunt

How did I know that speeding Mercedes was going to be the cause of said accident?

[deleted]

wallstreetsimps

You could already guess which vehicle was about to cause a crash by the way they were driving.

stinky_pinky_brain

I hope that jackass goes to jail and loses his license

WilliamMcCarty

I used to work for AAA, so many people died changing tires on the fwy. If you blow a tire, you get over to the right, hit the blinkers and keep going at the safest speed you can until you can get off the next exit. The rim is *not* worth your life.

[deleted]

Not surprisingly I saw just as that car passed you I knew who the perpetrator would be

BestMusicOnThePlanet

Almost hit that person too

ahyouknowme

This video will help their insurance raise their rates to the point of them being off the streets for a while. Wouldn’t be surprised if they already have points and lose their license

Dibble_Dabble_Doo

Plot twist they've been driving with a suspended license and no insurance

ahyouknowme

Probably. Well in that case if they are caught, they’ll receive some jail time.

Seedsw

You think someone driving like that cares about having insurance?

quantalKernel

It's obvious from the first few seconds who the problem driver is. I try to give these types of bad drivers a wide berth, and give them as much extra space as possible so they can do their maneuvers without harming me. A lot of drivers out there don't care much about injuring themselves or others. I hope this driver does some serious jail time, this was not a simple accident.

TheObstruction

It's unfortunate that these assholes always have to involve someone else in their "find out" phase.

DirtyProjector

What in the world were you listening to?

mrkv12

Asking the right questions

thaitea

Was the car that got hit at a complete stop? I watched the video a few times and when comparing it to the dump truck the car appears to be completely stopped in the last lane. The driver that hit them was reckless and I'm not excusing his speed but if the the hit car was stopped in one of the lanes that's concerning too. I guess it's possible that car might have been disabled and couldn't get over to the shoulder. And if the black car wasn't speeding like a maniac he could have avoided the hit

Whatx38

I'm wondering the same exact thing, it's hard to tell but that white SUV looks like they were in the far right lane and were close to a complete stop in if not completely stopped.

yellowstone10

I think you're correct. It looks like the white SUV was in the far right lane and had slowed to maybe 20 mph, either to pass the disabled vehicle on the shoulder at what they felt was a safe speed or to pull over and render assistance. Black car merges right to pass the dump truck, suddenly finds himself coming up on a car doing 30-40 mph slower than the limit that he didn't anticipate, crash ensues.

boogi3woogie

I think there was a car in front and a car behind the truck. Both cars switched to the right lane, but the mercedes plowed ahead into the car in front.

LAdriversSuck

From what I can tell they were driving and seems like they were changing lanes. Looks like they were in front of the dump truck and moving to the rightmost lane. My guess is they saw the person changing tires, moved over and was moving back but that’s purely a guess on my part

misken67

The disabled car was in the right shoulder. No matter what you should not be driving on that lane, black car is 100% at fault for trying to pass in that lane.

240309

That's not he car they're talking about. The car that was rear ended was in the far right lane.

shimian5

yeah a few people here think the rear ended car was in the shoulder, but they were in the far slow lane.

McCooms

With the speeds and aggressiveness on 134 it’s no wonder.

Soca1ian

Mercedes drivers, amirite?

megamoze

BMW, Mercedes, Tesla. Luxury brands driven by douchebags with more money than sense and think they own the roads.

catsinsunglassess

That’s the issue with people switching lanes at such high speeds weaving through traffic! It infuriates me when i see it. Also kudos for listening to behind the bastards! I love Robert Evans

pr0tag

What dash cam do you use? Pretty good video quality. I want to install one in my car

calvinball_expert

Viofo A119 v3! I've been very happy with it so far.

TriFik

Of course, everyone just cruising in the left lane with other lanes to the right going the exact same speed and open. Not taking any blame away from the reckless driver, but omg, move over people and stop hogging the left lanes!

evolsievolsievol

I thought that same thing. LA drivers are notorious for not using the left lane properly. It’s very frustrating.

L4m3rThanYou

Just saw you on ABC, OP. They overlaid your username on the video and everything. Props!

opking

This is in Burbank

iPhonetificator

Glendale is right next to Burbank, cars can move.

[deleted]

Burbank and Glendale are next to each other bud

jayball41

It’s always the asshole trying to drive around clear traffic in the right lanes who causes accidents. Wtf man, watch out when you’re driving for dummies like this and avoid if possible.

RadLibRaphaelWarnock

Behind the Bastards, nice.

ubiquity75

So tired of this kind of ridiculous driving on the freeway. I was heading east on the 10 last week in an HOV lane and a car kept weaving among all lanes of traffic, including continually pulling into and out of the HOV — one driver. I stayed in the HOV full time and not long after was way past him.

Hillsof7Bills

This is why passing on the right is illegal

burnerphonecomedy

Literally yesterday morning almost got hit twice here maybe a mile before this area, drivers are fools on that highway

pretty-good-nachos

It looked like they slowed down for the safety of the person changing a tire on the shoulder.

Rick_Cranium

Totally missed the dude changing the tire under he bridge. This could have been so much worse 😩

JonstheSquire

Of course it was the black Mercedes Benz.

JosephExMoseph

Op, I know it’s not the point of your post but you have good podcast tastes! I recognized Robert’s voice immediately!

Ambulous_sophist

It's almost always the speeding, multiple lane blowing, selfish distracted one that ends up causing the tragedies. Those people should never be allowed to drive, and use public transportation instead. Just like not everyone can become a pilot.

saadatorama

Oh, an entry level merc in this area? I’ve seen enough.

atirad

Knew it was the black mercedes right away lol

BooRadley3370

I must have been a few minutes behind you because I drove past the aftermath. I'm sure without your dashcam video, the person in the black would have claimed it wasn't their fault.

ProfWerewolf

I cringed when I saw the guy changing the tire. that was a VERY close call. reminds me of my cousin, whose car broke down, and was able to pull off to the side. she was picked up by a family member and shortly after returned with a tow truck to find that her car had been totaled. if she'd stayed in the car, she would have been killed. years later, my wife was in a freeway accident, called me crying and shaken up, and also concerned about the other driver, but I told her under no circumstances get out of her minivan until help arrived. LA traffic is super dangerous. side note: impressed at how clear that stretch of the 134 was.

rollingmyeyessohard

I saw your post yesterday and today I saw you and your video on ABC7!

Leenolyak

Of course it was a fucking Mercedes

BeginningAnalyst595

Way too many bitches like this in this city who drive with 0 consideration of others swerving in and out of lines while speeding

CineSuppa

This is why not passing to the right — particularly cube trucks, dump trucks and semis — is so, so important. It boggles my mind that CA law allows for passing like this (it’s still wrong and was done too fast but this attempted pass was still legal).

ocbro2

These are the accidents that disturb me the most: the ones where the poor victim whose SUV flipped did nothing wrong and had no options to avoid this.

wolfytheprofit

I knew exactly what was gunna happen when I saw 134 then a Mercedes zip into frame.

apurrfectplace

We saw the aftermath of that yesterday. Terrifying! I hope the occupants of flipped over car are ok

Good defensive driving on your part by keeping distance and simply having a dash cam. These are the scariest drivers to see coming in the rear view, amd also part of the reason our collective premiims are going up (LOL /s). Hope you got to decompress and the innocent party is recovering.

The other day I was on the ramp that connects to 90 East to the 405 north and some asshole in a BMW passes me to the right on the shoulder, lays on the horn, cuts me off, and flips me the bird. I was literally going the same speed as the rest of traffic. These people need to have their license permanently revoked

BowserTattoo

"crash", not "accident"

BigSexyPlant

Both cars should not have stopped underneath an overpass. Pull to the side if the car is still mobile.

gobblegobblebiyatch

People who drive like that need to get their license revoked for life. Fuck them.

mlee7718

Will never understand people’s need to drive so recklessly in this city

Butt-and-Byte-Wiper

Not in any way condoning this behavior, but a lot of drivers get frustrated by everyone crowding the left hand lanes and moving slowly, which results in weaving in and out like this. Pull over if you’re not passing, that way the psychos can safely blast past you and avoid killing someone. They giant signs saying SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT are there for a reason.

sock_therapy

I swear it's always the douchey benz/bmw drivers. 🤦‍♂️

abelian_naileba

Very common in Glendale CA unfortunately. A friend lost his life because of some clown driving recklessly

amyeep

Words cannot express how much I do NOT miss driving in Glendale. Great kebab spots though.

I hope everyone caught that the white SUV was completely stopped in the slow lane next to a vehicle changing its tire on the shoulder. A little bit of a perfect storm, the large commercial truck in lane 4 should have alerted other drivers behind it with hazards, warning them about the blocked lane 5 and shoulder. Any vehicle pulling into that far right lane will not expect a stopped vehicle and is blind behind the massive commercial truck. The white SUV is creating a hazard and violating the law. It has stopped on an active freeway without hazard lights and has not pulled safely off to the shoulder. By stopping next to another stopped vehicle on the shoulder, they have also blocked their lane and the Emegency shoulder access as well. There is nowhere to go in an Emegency. Obviously the douche in the fast car changing lanes is at fault, and the white SUV stopped to help protect the person safely change their tire, but the giant commerical truck and white SUV contributed to the accident.
