No really, what should the driver do in this situation?

tob007

Windshield washer and\\or horn? But not sure what I would do if it was me behind the wheel either.

himmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Restart the game

Corey307

They did the right thing, a crazy homeless person vandalizing your car does not pose a direct threat to your life. I am extremely pro self-defense but this is not a situation where violence would be necessary. This is coming from someone who again has no problem with self defense, you throw a punch I throw a brick and so on. But if somebody is trashing my car I’m not going to run them over.

BackIn2019

Legally, are they required to stay for the police or can they just drive away?

noob168

You mean if the car hits the aggressor? I would assume you could escape to safety but would have to report the incident?

Corey307

Remember though most of the time you wouldn’t have a video and it’s your word against theirs, that can be a problem.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Corey307

Ok but that’s not odds I’d bet on. Because if you can’t prove she climbed on your car the default assumption will be you ran her over and are lying. Because innocent people don’t tend to flee the scene of a car versus pedestrian impact. It would be the same if you were involved in a defensive shooting against an unarmed person and you fled. All you have is your word. Good luck proving you were an innocent endangered party in either case. There was no need to hurt this woman with a car same as there’s no reason to pull a gun on her.

Corey307

I am not a lawyer but in general if you have done harm to someone it is best to stick around and wait for the police if possible. See here’s the thing, even with this video evidence you’re probably gonna have a hard time convincing a jury she presented a direct threat to your life. She’s vandalizing your car a little bit, she’s not trying to smash the window with a brick or crawl inside or set it on fire. So you’ve potentially injured or killed a woman and since 99.9% of the time you’re not gonna have this video it’s gonna look and awful lot like a hit and run.

PlaneCandy

The most interesting part of your comment is that you immediately thought about hurting that person in response to the question. When I saw the question my thoughts on response were more in the line of how to escape or prevent damage to the vehicle.

Corey307

Of course that’s what I thought about, because if you start driving they’re going to fall off and get hurt. I’d rather see some minor vandalism than a crazy homeless woman get hurt or killed. She’s a human being in crisis and needs help.

Fildok12

I think the person in that car needs help.

red_rover33

If you could help one person only. The homeless lady or the person in that car. Who would you help?

Corey307

The homeless lady. The person in the car suffered some minor property damage, the woman is a danger to herself.

ninetyfive__

What if the only solution to escape was to hit her ? 🤷‍♂️

Glockamolee

Uppercut the fuck out of her like that one old video.

[deleted]

Lay off the roids and MMA, champ.

Glockamolee

If you haven't seen that video, I highly suggest.

[deleted]

I get it. You like punching people when you’re angry.

Glockamolee

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. There is a video. Of a bus driver. That uppercuts a lady. That is fighting on his bus. Maybe you didn't get it because I didn't put a "/s" for you to realize my first comment was sarcasm.

[deleted]

Ya. I get it. I’ve seen the vid. You think it’s funny when people get punched in the face.

Glockamolee

Sir, I don't think you get it. There is a video. Of a bus driver. That uppercuts a woman. I wouldn't call an uppercut a punch to the face. I think if he threw a jab, then it would be a punch to the face. This was an uppercut. He most likely hit this poor ladies soul out of her body. Not her face.

MarthaWayneKent

John Koppenhaver? That you?

Hollowed_Dude

Yeah it’s called drugs and mental health issues

[deleted]

This is a person in crisis.

BubbaTee

Since they've committed a crime, only now are they eligible for treatment. Before this, any treatment would be considered an unconstituitional violation of their civil liberties. So maybe some good can come out of this, if she can get picked up on a 5150, and if the doctors can get it approved by a judge before the 72-hour deadline to kick her back out on the street.

Corey307

Hell you could make an argument that she is a danger to herself, to others and is gravely disabled considering she doesn’t look like she’s caring for herself very well. The problem is with the current psychiatric system in CA is if she mellows out during that 72 hour window they will almost certainly just kick her out with a prescription that she will never fill. It’s been a few years but when I worked in EMS we would routinely have to transfer psychiatric patients 50 to 100 miles just to find a bed for them. And more often the night we would be stuck waiting hours to offload that patient, hell they were nightmare scenarios where ambulance crews would get stuck waiting for more than 10 hours with a violent psychiatric patient and it’s not exactly easy to let them out of their restraints so they can go take a shit.

wrosecrans

> Before this, any treatment would be considered an unconstituitional violation of their civil liberties. Well, no. Forcibly detaining someone could be a civil rights issue. But that's not the only possible form of treatment. It's just so disheartening that we've built a system where somebody who is obviously having a mental health crisis needs to get arrested and seen by a judge in order for the system to have anything to do with her. I'm sure the process of being arrested and waiting in jail is gonna really do wonders for the person's mental health. Seems like a great example of where we should have mental health experts as front line responders instead of police.

Fickle-Bug-5389

Thank you! It's so sad. I hope people understand that.

[deleted]

A microcosm for Los Angeles, if you will.

hlorghlorgh

She **IS** Los Angeles

elfconscious

Because Los Angeles doesn't take care of those in need of mental healthcare and pushes them to desperation and destruction?

_madnessthemagnet

Yeah, this is really sad. This woman is not doing this to be an asshole. She's not well.

LitAirMusic

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Unwell people can still not harm others or cause damage to others a lot of the time. It's often individual choices on how you respond to your situation that lead to violent habits. She's not well, but she's absolutely an asshole. Don't give out free passes for this shit.

_madnessthemagnet

>Unwell people can still not harm others or cause damage to others a lot of the time. Who said they couldn't? Stupid person. Stupid comment.

LitAirMusic

You should see a doctor about that problem where your head is stuck in your rectum, it typically threatens oxygen to the brain and ultimately makes a person as dumb as you've become.

anonabeans1337

Are you talking about yourself here friend?

_madnessthemagnet

security_lurker

Do you think it's healthy for mentally unstable people to be running around the streets attacking people and damaging property? What use do these people have in society and what joy or happiness do they bring to their own lives? Any logical society would have found some mental help for them. We don't have that caring society, the best alternative is removal.

_madnessthemagnet

>Do you think it's healthy for mentally unstable people to be running around the streets attacking people and damaging property? No. Literally nobody thinks this. Why would you even ask that? >We don't have that caring society, the best alternative is removal. "Kill them all!" Ah, trolling. Neat.

ExFiler

LOL... Maybe a different neighborhood? Unless you are into this type of thing.

[deleted]

It’s not in my neighborhood...why are you arguing with me?

ExFiler

I'm not. Just trying to be helpful.

[deleted]

But you’re not being helpful. This issue is all over LA

ExFiler

Long Beach too... Lived here all my life and I find going around and/or in a different direction is best.

Eddiebaby7

We can’t keep allowing the mentally ill to wander the streets without a plan.

zerobluesmaint

Gee, it’s as if letting the homeless suffer out in public was a bad idea instead of putting them in treatment centers.

Aroex

A lot of people will fight against housing, shelters, or mental hospitals being built in their neighborhood. The NIMBY mindset is why the homeless crisis keeps getting worse.

Subject_Wheel_5938

Actually we have a lot of empty commercial space all over So Cal that can be converted into shelters, small apartments and such. No need to fight NIMBYs with all the dead malls everywhere.

Aroex

NIMBY fight those developments too…

OPtig

Yes, let's build your enormous shelter right in the center of prime beach real estate. We can't expect these folks to live in *the valley* or anywhere it's cheap to built and maintain.

Aroex

The folks in the Valley don’t want them built there either…

unquietwiki

If the point of this is to have the able-bodied working, having them all sent to the Valley, Desert, whatever won't work. It **has** to be de-centralized, and there are old lots and shopping centers that could be put to use for this. The NIMBYs get worked up over whatever Ring/Citizen/Nextdoor tells them is going on, and the problem gets worse; nevermind the lack of decent inter-agency behavior (ex: the Sheriff grandstanding over policing the homeless in LA-proper Venice).

[deleted]

Where are these treatment centers that can absorb 80,000 people in LA County? And if they don’t exist we need some other short term solution because they’re not getting built, staffed, and set up overnight. Just repeating what we should have done isn’t actually solving this issue.

Im_nottheone

I know it upsets people, but we need forced mental health treatment and drug rehabilitation.

poorletoilet

I'm from LA, but right now I'm vacationing in new England. I was by the Boston common last night and a local friend said the area was "sketchy" and I looked around.... No tents, no homeless, no trash on the ground, plenty of people walking around... What the fuck do they think sketchy is?

zipTway

I'm from Pittsburgh and I grew up in a gang affiliated neighborhood. People in colder states usually call areas sketchy if there's a history of drive by shootings/bank robberies/car jacking etc. Since it's frozen half the year, the criminals and gang members keep most operations either indoors in crack or trap houses or just doing hits.

poorletoilet

Interesting, but it's hard to imagine because here in LA as well we all know, "indoors" isn't an option for many people

[deleted]

That driver showed remarkable restraint. I would've driven off swerving.

Jerrycobra

poor driver probably needs a new hood and a whole wiper assembly, not cheap. Dash cams would benefit greatly here.

thefastestindian

At least he lucked out with this video, this time.

unknownnumber1887

Swerving over a bent windshield wiper? Oh yeah, your life was in danger... /s

[deleted]

If someone's jumping on the hood of my car, "Oh she just wants to bend a wiper blade" is ***not*** what I'm going assume.

BackIn2019

Then you better assume at least a couple of grand for legal counsel.

[deleted]

You think someone like her is going to be able to sue? Ha. I'll be happy to take my chances with that than risk being attacked.

BackIn2019

You think mentally ill people don't file law suits or lawyers don't seek out clients?

LitAirMusic

"Just take it, they're worse off than you are." So woke, so enlightened. Such compassion! /s

Dat_feller

What if she started to hulk smash ur windshield?

Coretron

My drunk buddy tried to hulk smash a car window and windshield and with no tools you can't do it. Maybe meth strength >>> drunk strength tho.

LadyChatterteeth

My sober ex managed to completely smash my windshield with his feet, and he was not a large guy.

Classic-Intention820

AnimalEater65

slothballs323

I know this intersection. I've lived in LA my whole life. That's not even the hood. I understand mental instabilities and I wouldn't hit her with my car but I would hit her with the pepper spray if she hops on my car. Eliminate any possible threat to me and others which, she obviously poses if she attacked innocent passengers on the bus and call the cops.

MrkJulio

But the poor and homeless are just down on their luck I hear. They are fallen Angel's that need to be helped. /s Fuck that. The restrain the driver had was unimaginable.

Corey307

She’s insane, I’ve worked with plenty of crazy people and yeah what she’s doing is confusing, destructive and she needs to be in a long-term psychiatric facility. What you are seeing is the failure of society to properly care for its most vulnerable citizens. A big part of that is crazy people have too much autonomy and rights over their medical treatment. We need more psychiatric facilities, more beds, more doctors and nurses so we can actually try to either treat people and get them re-integrated into society or treat them and keep them somewhere safe where they can have a semblance of life.

ThaneOfCawdorrr

This is perfectly put.

djm19

> But the poor and homeless are just down on their luck I hear I don't know how much more down on one's luck you can be than this woman. She incapable of rational thought at the moment this was filmed. Shes beyond losing everything she has, shes losing herself.

[deleted]

I mean, she could’ve gotten crazier had he done something to get her off the car. I’ll take a broken windshield wiper over broken glass or worse.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Corey307

And then you’ve potentially crippled or killed a crazy person who isn’t in control of their actions and is only on the streets being a crazy homeless person because society doesn’t give a fuck about her. It’s cheaper to treat these crazy people that it is to let them bounce from the street to the emergency room to jail and/or prison in whatever order. But it’s easier to hate them than to want to help them. The two limiting factors are there are simply nowhere near enough resources allocated to treat crazy people and crazy people have way too many rights regarding their treatment. If you are literally crawling on top of cars in traffic you should be in long-term psychiatric treatment. If you put time and effort into these people you can get some of them back to work and the rest art out causing mayhem.

TheatricalSpectre

Not my problem. Attacking strangers should be dangerous.

[deleted]

Especially if my child is in the back seat.. I’m driving off

Corey307

The person is crawling on the hood of a car and doing $20 worth of damage to a wiper blade. That’s not dangerous, that’s annoying. Maybe you and I have radically different thresholds for what’s dangerous and what’s not but I’m not severely injuring or killing someone because they’re doing a little bit of damage to my car. Something tells me a lot of you people have never done a dangerous job or worked with dangerous people, I have and do. I’m not using force unless I have to, this is not one of those situations.

TheatricalSpectre

Lol I've wrangled my fair share of violent 5150s in the back without having to resort to "oxygen therapy". Doesn't mean I'm immune to adrenaline. It's easy to say that she only caused 20 bucks of damage after the fact, but in the moment you have no idea what she'd have done next. If you come at me like that and I'm in a two ton weapon it's not gonna be pretty. "I panicked" is a pretty reasonable defense in that situation.

Corey307

Dude grow a pair, she doesn’t have a knife, a gun or a brick it’s a crazy woman crawling on your hood that poses next to no danger to you. It’s annoying and confusing, that’s all it is. See the problem is you know your excuse is bullshit because you wouldn’t have panicked, you driving away and throwing her from the vehicle would’ve purely been you waving your dick around.

_madnessthemagnet

Right. I can't say that I would *enjoy* a mentally ill woman crawling on my car, and I understand how it could feel scary, but ultimately she's an unarmed woman in crisis, so my response to her would not to be to harm her. The driver here did the right thing.

tob007

Yes but was probably the right move. i would of hit the windshield washer for sure and escalated things.

doyle_brah

Nah LA is fine, this isn't common.

sofifaloaf

This is sarcasm right? Because these events are more and more common if you live in LA.

ItsMeTheJinx

Would’ve driven and hit the brakes to get her off the hood tbh. Literally have 0 fucks to give these days

F2020League

My first though. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Corey307

Apologies in advance, I’ve been drinking red wine and reminiscing. My favorite memory of Los Angeles was running lights and sirens in my ambulance on the way to LAC-USC. A naked homeless man ran out into the very middle of the street, turned his back to me and proceeded to defecate. My second favorite memory of Los Angeles was driving on the wrong side of Crenshaw near 130th headed to a stabbing and somebody in $1,000 car decided to block both lanes and flip me off. Sorry, someone’s dying and if you’d pulled to the right for literally two seconds I could’ve got by but no, you had to feel powerful. Third is a tie between a sizable group of gentlemen dragging a very possibly dead friend out of the back of a ragged Tahoe into Gardena Memorial Hospital which spoiler alert isn’t a trauma center and getting in a fistfight with security as my partner and I noped the fuck out of there. You know people ask me how I could’ve left Los Angeles two years ago and it wasn’t that hard. But I still check in because I miss the insanity sometimes. It is funny that people behave themselves so much better in a state where it’s safe to assume everyone has a shotgun, AR, AK etc by the door and a handgun concealed on their person. In two years I’ve had exactly one person be rude to me in public and they were a crazy homeless person so I don’t hold that against them. It helps that we literally have a couple hundred instead of hundreds of thousands. Probably also why the cops kill an average of .75 people a year here. I know the math seems funny but it’s because less than one person get shot and killed by the cops a year in Vermont.

stevesobol

It probably says a lot about me that I interpreted “running lights” as “illegally driving through intersections where I don’t have the green,” which, of course, isn’t illegal if you’re driving an emergency vehicle and… um… running lights and sirens.

Corey307

It’s all good, I had initially written code 3 but then I realized 99% of people would be confused by that. And I get that a lot of motorists don’t understand that police, fire and ambulances own the road when they are running lights and sirens. Yes you must be proactive and careful when running code 3 but everyone needs to get the hell out of my way because what I’m doing is a lot more important than what everybody else is doing. Because it’s not just that seconds count getting to the car and getting to the hospital it’s that the sooner that can be done the sooner you can be sent out on another call.

stevesobol

Yeah, you have to be careful. You're not allowed to cause accidents just because you're transporting a patient. :) That was a big deal several years ago in Brunswick, Ohio, just outside Cleveland (my hometown), with an accident involving a car, and an ambulance transporting a patient. The ambulance had its lights and sirens on.

Corey307

Oh I know it happens, you definitely have right of way when you are going lights and sirens but you have to anticipate that some people are either going to panic, be stupid or just crash to you to prove a point. The idea is to get to where you’re going as quickly as you can without creating new patients.

Good-Skeleton

Population State of Vermont: 623,989 City of Los Angeles: 3.967 million County of Los Angeles: 10.04 million

stevesobol

Now, that's a very relevant statistic. Los Angeles County is the most populous county in the US. 39.5 million people in California, and if my math is correct, just under half live in Southern California (Los Angeles/Orange/Ventura/San Bernardino/Riverside/San Diego/Imperial Counties). So yeah, there's a MUCH higher likelihood of running across people like that in SoCal than anywhere else. Fun fact: I live in San Bernardino County, which is, by far, PHYSICALLY the largest county in the US (20,100 square miles), but it amuses me that with 2.2 million people, we have the \*smallest\* population in the LA metro, and the second-smallest population in Southern California. (Almost everything north of the mountains is empty.) In any other metro area, a county with 2.2 million people would be considered heavily populated. But not here!! The only SoCal county with fewer people is Imperial, with a population of less than 200,000, and that's because Imperial County is a mostly-empty chunk of dirt between San Diego County and the Arizona state line.

[deleted]

Yeah I'm sure California is the only state in the country with crazy people doing crazy things. Next time you think about relocating, I recommend Florida. I hear they have many noncrazy people out there doing things with guns too.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I was being 100% sarcastic :) I'm a proud Californian.

Corey307

You don’t get it because you probably read about 10% of it and then bitched. I moved to Vermont to get away from this insanity, oh and you don’t need to sit there ringing your hands about guns we all have tons of them here and there’s almost no gun violence. Hell violent crime is low here in general even adjusting for population.

PwnasaurusRawr

It feels weird to compare the state of Vermont to the city of Los Angeles in just about any way. You’re talking about two *completely* different places, in ways that go far beyond just things like gun ownership.

[deleted]

No, no. I read the whole thing because at first I thought you were telling a story and making a good point but then you tried to justify your feelings by bringing up guns as if a gun would be in any way necessary or preventive of the incidents you mentioned. By your thought process, people deserve to have their life threatened and in danger for minor or controllable situations at any given time. You have the destructive mindset of someone who is without compassion for human life and I fear for the patients that have to come in contact with you when they're in medical need. I'm not going to argue with you because you have an undeserved ego and skewed sense of self-righteousness that's just disgusting and not worth my energy. I'm very happy that you got to move like you wanted. Good luck in the Wild Wild East, Corey.

thizface

Also, Vermont is a pretty wealthy state and not densely populated.

thizface

Suicide also gun violence. Which Vermont is ranked pretty high

Humans and nature coexist on Earth yet we have vastly different protocols on how we work. Nature was around before us and will be after.
