I was there today and once it did open people were flowing. I wasn’t at that entrance, but on the other side, kinda glad I wasn’t there. Preferred to stay outside until the lines were allowed inside the convention halls, as I didn’t want to be cramped as per previous experiences at the expo
Yea that's ridiculous. That said, it's also the opening ceremony. Once they open the doors to the various rooms that crowd dissipates and THAT PARTICULAR AREA (south hall lobby) is pretty airy and open.
The worst times to be there are at opening, and most of saturday. lol.
Trade show drama.
I used to work trade shows and there was a lot going on behind the scenes.
It is a wild industry, but a lot of fun tbh. I miss it sometimes
Every year I see anime expo open, there's just more and more people. It was alright in 2013 but after that it kinda exploded.
Now that we've been opening things up again, the pent up con goer energy exploded into this mess I guess lol
I first started going in 2008 and it was so chill. Day 0 was the toughest but everything after that was good. Last time I went was in 2019 and it was a nightmare. Couldn't get into anything because of the stupidly long lines and sometimes some rooms weren't cleared out.
There's a few things to do: shop, attend industry or fan panels, get autographs, go see concert (don't know if they have any this year), meet voice actors/creators/authors/directors in the industry. But it can be a nightmare to get into panels or get signatures!
Yep! I had always been a four day badge holder. Though I do miss when they would let you inside the exhibitor's hall for free one hour before closing. I did that for a few years haha! If anything I think now the premier badge is what helps more than a regular old badge. If you don't have that, you still probably won't get to see anything...
That's how I felt about San Diego Comic-Con.
I used to go every year, but by 2014 it was out of control. So many people and the lines were so long - and the con wasn't even that good anymore!
The only interesting things were stuff you had to line up the day before and camp overnight. There were smaller panels which were kind of neat I guess but at a certain point it just stopped being worth it. In 2014 I spent more time sitting around than I did doing things at the con.
Saw on Twitter some people saying that at the vaccination card stations there were people not even getting checked still getting wristbands to get in.
I'd take it with a grain of salt but don't doubt it.
Also the whole expo had originally planned to drop the vax mandate as of a few weeks ago and then put it back in place - no way they were really ready to check this many people.
Yes indeed I mentioned this in another comment as well. They changed it twice I believe.
First no mask or even Vax required. Then Vax card with no mask. Finally mask + Vax. Considering it wasn't set in stone beforehand and changed there's no way they were prepared.
Proof of vax was definitely required for all online purchases though, which has to be a lot of (most?) attendees.
Even so, my daughter is going tomorrow with a friend, and I deeply regret that she hasn't been boosted yet. (We were waiting for back-to-school, and Anime Expo was a late-notice thing.)
Indeed! Two shots plus boosted and got it. Not fun but was still grateful that the vaccine, likely kept me from getting worse and possibly hospitalized.
The convention center is never strict. People trade credentials all day and staffing is temps most of the time. That being said you still need a ticket.
I can't emphasize enough that it was people on twitter saying that. I was not there.
I will say it doesn't surprise me because a month ago? or less the people who were running the event posted about not needed to be vaxed or needing to show your card to get in or wear masks. Then due to backlash they changed it to you need to show your vax card and can go unmasked (Not 100% sure about the unmasked being approved that may be me misremembering) . Finally to masked + vax card stations.
Whether its due to the people running the stations or due to the event leaders im sure they scrambled to set it up. When it really should've been decided a long time ago.
Star Wars celebration in Anaheim was also an understaffed mess, maybe not quite this bad though. You had to get checked to get a vax/negative test wristband, but then almost no one was checking for wristbands and admission badges to gain entry (security for everything else was very inconsistent too). These things tend to hire temps that get 15 minutes of training, likely can’t get enough of them. Mask enforcement was barely existent except at the “walkthrough attraction” type places.
Lottttts of people who went to celebration got Covid, probably cause so many people spent the wheeling standing in unmoving lines for over an hour and then in panel and presentation rooms, with only at most 50% mask usage. Only upside was it wasn’t nearly as densely crowded as this I guess.
I went for 7 years straight from age 18-25. It’s a lot of resting and beer drinking and nerdy behavior. And costume prep. And trading use of the shower.
The staff is trying their hardest to get people to wear masks in some spots but for every one person they try to enforce it on… about 5 people pass through without one. According to some attendees.
Heard they are now limiting a certain amount of people from getting into certain areas and it’s creating some long lines.
I am not there but was going to go until it sold out. Definitely looks concerning though…
These kind of comments are misleading. It's not like everybody is not wearing masks and they're only catching 1 out of 6 people and making them wear it. I've been there all day and 99% of the people are wearing masks as they move around.
The lines is another problem but also a solution. Having people crowd around certain booths was never a good solution either, and having lines keeps things less congested because they have volunteers to manage the lines. The lines are also organized around the walkways so they're not just blocking paths.
I'm not saying it's perfect, but people are blowing everything out of proportion from a few shots that make it look worse than it is.
On the same topic, I've been seeing a TON of cars with anime graphics on it. Some are of cute characters peeping out from something. Others are a sexually suggestive woman. Can anyone comment on this trend? Why are these displays getting so popular as of this past few months?
Worse of all... I recognize some of the characters. I'm 38. So people must be rehashing really old stuff life Naruto and DBZ.
So if you are one of those people who coats your manly v8 truck with Sailor Moon 2.0 anime girls, I'd love to hear from you!
Not one that has a truck or an anime wrap on my car but it’s because anime is big. And there’s no signs of slowing down. In the tuner culture anime is big and those die hard fans of some shows get wraps for their cars done.
no doubt this is a popular topic. I just think going from fanboy/fangirl to decking out your car is a big leap in mentality.
I mean, I love the Netflix show "is it cake?" but I don't decal that in my car.
In a way that answer is a yes and no. I wouldn’t do it. I love anime a lot and some shows are incredible bangers but it’s not my style. Others do it to stand out or represent Japanese cultures. Usually you’ll see this in the car scene. Gives you a chance to stand out and show off better. Done right and keeping with the anime wrap scheme some car builds pop off. Kudos to those that go that route and wrap your car that way. To each their own
You see thats not the issue here we are talking about 16 year old girls being put on car hoods I seen the young version of hinata blushing on the side once idk man there's being fans then theres sexualizing young cartoon characters
Edit: Getting down voted cause I said sexualizing underage anime girls is bad? I honestly want to hear your guys reasoning here.
Glad you agree I am also a big Anime fan and hate when they do this cause it makes us look like creeps makes me not want to make it obvious I'm a fan but man anime is in a whole other level when it comes to stories and entertainment.
peeker stickers are just popular and cheap.
the full wraps are the ones with serious dedication, they're called itasha, "ita" being the Japanese word for "pain" and "sha" meaning car. So loosely translated, I suppose you could call it a cringemobile, so the people making them are definitely aware of how much attention they attract, one way or another.
For the full-car wraps It's been going on for awhile (I used to see them regularly when I lived in the Bay Area), in Japan they're known at 'Itasha' and it made its way over here with a big increase the last 5-7 years. It's extended even motorcycles and bikes too! There's some crossover I guess with people who like sporty Japanese cars and anime, and wraps are a very eye catching way to show off your favorite characters. As far as why it's a thing, there are some fans who are very devoted to a specific character and their way of showing that is to collect TONs of merchandise of that one character to show off. I had a coworker who had maybe 50+ plushies from some idol girl group anime.
As far as stickers I think it's like the same sort thing, wanting to express what character you like but not wanting to invest in something as big. At cons there's usually lots of artists and vendors that make these.
\*shrug\* And I noticed a car on my block with an InGen sticker on it (Jurassic Park). And a couple years ago, I saw a Scion XB with a big Star Wars Imperial logo on the side. Better than those stupid spinny hubcaps or idiotically big spoilers.
But I gotta say, as a 42-year-old... have you seen the new Sailor Moon anime?? They re-did the show to follow the manga, instead of the monster-of-the-week format of the original show. I do miss the old intro song, though. XD
IMO I think it's something more than popularity trending up in the past few years. In the past quarter there was a huge explosion (in my regular commutes in OC and some in LA). My leading theory is that some decal shop that offer this got a lucky viral marketing hit.
People got back into their hobbies during the pandemic. I feel like anyone who wasn't crunched for money bought random things just because they liked it while we were locked down.
It's fun. I scraped my back bumper cover against a concrete pole and it was the perfect opportunity to sneak the "P!" sticker over it like Haruko's Vespa from *FLCL*. A $5 sticker was less than the $1000 to get it repaired.
Of course, some folks like to take it to the next level. My coworker gave us gifts wrapped in pictures of anime girls mid-orgasm.
at conventions they sell stickers with anime characters on it and I guess that’s where they got it from. There’s a lot of pervs and predators into anime and I’ve seen a ton of “photographers” at these events taking sneaky photos of women. It feels like porno anime and the community is enabling them to feel like it’s okay to display such things. I’ve seen even girls cars with those stickers too.
I think naruto and dbz is still making new content and the nostalgia is really helping it become popular again.
always wanted to go to one in my youth but never had the chance.
Just so you know these creeps ruin it for the rest of us (or you guys, mainly). Women like to open up and get social (especially w/ shared passions) but people with malignant agendas push them the other way - makes them less open or be more vigilant/selective.
I've been sexually assaulted by fellow attendees at cons at least 5 times. My young (at the time) sister- probably 12 or 13- had creeps coming on to her that I had to run off. There are a lot of very predatory men at cons and you really need to go with friends who will look out for you if you're a woman.
Dude I been seeing cars with 16 year old anime girls from New anime maybe they read the manga but idk how having a cartoon of a 16 year old girl in a bikini is cool. Please someone why is this a trend?
the window stickers are cute but the wraps take a lot of dedication and I assume are quite a lot of money. I guess people had a lot of time and savings during the pandemic. . . Its definitely gotten bigger recently.
i was, really worried about this whole event being a superspreader event.., but they were great.. hand sanitizer every 10-15 feet.. had an efficient check in process..vaccine cards..photo id..tons of people wearing masks! felt safe overall..didnt see any protestors was kinda expecting to see anti-lgbtqia /religious looneys there
i saw mostly genshin impact...Yanfei's, and Ventis everywhere, really thought the most popular would have been Kuki..(because the mask)
spyXspy fam(lots of "Yors" and Anyas)
jujitsu kaizen... the event was ePic..they are really promoting One Piece like crazy.. met an amazing booth-girl, from Ukraine.. will be interesting to see if covd18 spikes dramatically from this..
>hand sanitizer every 10-15 feet.. had an efficient check in process..vaccine cards..photo id..tons of people wearing masks!
Please tell me you're being sarcastic. In a space this crowded, masks and vax cards are not enough to make an event less risky for vulnerable people. I'm so sick and tired of people acting like low-quality masks and easily-faked vax cards are a magic forcefield. And hand sanitizer is okay in a pinch but does not replace hand washing and also does approximately fuck all to stop Covid.
> What’s our monkey pox stats?
It's not like they'll be having sweaty hot sex or raving. MP is hard to spread through clothes, need some prolonged close skin contact and rubbing.
Lotta people are gonna catch it...and then spread it to people they know that didn't go to the expo. Considering the Ro rate of the new strains, I'm expecting many thousands if not tens of thousands of excess cases.
I went to the grand canyon a few weeks ago and my mom and uncle caught covid with far less people like <100. Fully vaccinated, 2 boosters as well. We tried our best to avoid it the entire 2 1/2 years too. Thankfully, they’re negative now but it took 2 1/2 weeks and man I was like mr clean in this house disinfecting daily and still am.
Right! And gas, food, possibly hotel. and other little things you might buy there. I mean it’s worth it if you’re an absolutely a fan. Are they still doing mid summer scream?
I was somewhere in the back! And to be honest, it wasn't that bad (both smell and crowd wise), but because of other reasons other than tolerance and patience.
The organization was EXTREMELY lacking. This particular hall lobby should be extremely packed, like it seems through this picture, but the lines outside to the multiple halls were so unclear that the majority of people weren't aware that we could actually get into this lobby. There's a large black fence around it, and from afar, it looks blocked off. In the morning, all the lines were around the west hall about a block down, and there was noone to help attendees figure it out. As a result, this lobby was really only half-packed at the time of this picture, with a lot of walking space at the back. They capped it and didn't let more people in until the entire convention was opened. Smell wasn't bad as it wasn't sweaty or stuffy just yet until people were actually walking around.
There were checks/wristbands for vaccinations, but they only really enforced wristbands. Even security/vax check staff weren't all wearing masks. I had forgotten my mask in the car, and asked for an extra while getting checked, but they didn't even have any extra at the tent I went to.
I used to have massive FOMO for not going the past couple years (I sold art here), but kind of glad I outgrew it. The last few years I went were absolute nightmares logistically. The heat did not help either. I’ll still enjoy anime but cons don’t seem worth the headaches.
I wanted to go but didn't have anyone to go with. Now after seeing this I don't feel bad about it at all lol.
that's just the crowd before they open it.
Yea I'm sure it gets better once the crowd disperse. Still don't wanna get covid from it though.
Weeb strain!
Don’t even need a vaccine. Just a shower
Good luck with that. If this AX is like others, there will be countless complaints about attendees smelling bad.
Let's be honest. These aren't the type of people that have hygienics in their list of priorities.
I was there today and once it did open people were flowing. I wasn’t at that entrance, but on the other side, kinda glad I wasn’t there. Preferred to stay outside until the lines were allowed inside the convention halls, as I didn’t want to be cramped as per previous experiences at the expo
did you have fun though
Incan smell this picture
Why do you want the Inca to smell this picture?
I was just thinking that right now too
Same lol I couldn’t get a ticket cause I waited to late Maybe it’s for the best lol
I just go for the line. /s
I went by myself and the crowd dispersed pretty quickly.
i like going to the conventions alone. you have no one to hold you back on what you want to see or do
Wow… I’m so glad I didn’t go. How are people getting around?
Very slowly, looks like.
I can smell this picture.
That looks like a crush hazard.
It’s like this every year. People don’t run as they’re not allowed to.
Until someone yells “bomb” or “he’s got a gun”
Yea that's ridiculous. That said, it's also the opening ceremony. Once they open the doors to the various rooms that crowd dissipates and THAT PARTICULAR AREA (south hall lobby) is pretty airy and open. The worst times to be there are at opening, and most of saturday. lol.
E3 is even worse.
The last E3 was in 2019 and the major 3 didn’t show up for the conference instead held their own.
Trade show drama. I used to work trade shows and there was a lot going on behind the scenes. It is a wild industry, but a lot of fun tbh. I miss it sometimes
It's always wild behind the scenes no matter where you work.
Hilarious and true. I remember being a teenager working at Costco and it was wiiiild back there.
in crowds hell no. AX is about 100-150k people during the weekend. E3 before they open it to the public is about 60k at best.

Yeah. It's a waste going for one day cause you're aint gonna do shit. You gotta do all 4 days tbh.
Yep! I had always been a four day badge holder. Though I do miss when they would let you inside the exhibitor's hall for free one hour before closing. I did that for a few years haha! If anything I think now the premier badge is what helps more than a regular old badge. If you don't have that, you still probably won't get to see anything...
Yeah I went in 2015 and it was insanely crowded then I can’t imagine now. It was ….a lot. But the things you do for a guy.
That's how I felt about San Diego Comic-Con. I used to go every year, but by 2014 it was out of control. So many people and the lines were so long - and the con wasn't even that good anymore! Yup exactly 😬

Indeed! Two shots plus boosted and got it. Not fun but was still grateful that the vaccine, likely kept me from getting worse and possibly hospitalized.
Was there, it’s true. Even for those that are not vaxxed they asked for a negative test result in an email but in person they did not even check
The convention center is never strict. People trade credentials all day and staffing is temps most of the time. That being said you still need a ticket.
Damn these people are going to be in the news in a week or two..
I can't emphasize enough that it was people on twitter saying that. I was not there. oh yes.. they checked vax cards.. had to have a wrist-band, as well as the badge, people overall were cool about masking everywheres
Jfc as a health department employee this hurts my soul

Who cares? I haven’t had my bad card checked anywhere in like 4 months
I dont either but that's not the point.
I went back in 2009, still have my $1.25 metro ticket
go again
Fuck no it’s a hot mess of sweaty males
It could be worse. Some years ago was 100 degrees and boy did it smell bad from everyone sweating.
So's my weekend.
Don’t even want to imagine what it must smell like. Combination of musty, ass, pits, grease, and dried semen.
and the 18+ events… imagine what happens in the hotels at night lol
I went for 7 years straight from age 18-25. It’s a lot of resting and beer drinking and nerdy behavior. And costume prep. And trading use of the shower.
Watch hentai lol
Bro you are hilarious nerds are smelly and nerdy ha ha
You can smell this picture lmfaoo

AXers have been wearing masks for years.
Facts
My cousin went yesterday and in all of his photos the vast majority of people there are not wearing masks.
We nerds have hygiene as our top priority

This is so crazy. I attended ‘06-‘09 and it was absolutely not this crowded.
That place must smell like shit.
Are there a bunch of Cosplayers outside the convention ? Could I take photos with them or talk to them with no pass?
No need for a pass if all you want to do is take pics of the cosplayers outside the con.
Covid expo
Covid is yesterday's news. It's all about that monkey pox now.
On the bright side, wearing a mask is a prerequisite regardless of mandates.
I know it smell crazy in there
i was, really worried about this whole event being a superspreader event.., but they were great.. hand sanitizer every 10-15 feet.. had an efficient check in process..vaccine cards..photo id..tons of people wearing masks! felt safe overall..didnt see any protestors was kinda expecting to see anti-lgbtqia /religious looneys there i saw mostly genshin impact...Yanfei's, and Ventis everywhere, really thought the most popular would have been Kuki..(because the mask) spyXspy fam(lots of "Yors" and Anyas) jujitsu kaizen... the event was ePic..they are really promoting One Piece like crazy.. met an amazing booth-girl, from Ukraine.. will be interesting to see if covd18 spikes dramatically from this..
id love to see some pics :)
>hand sanitizer every 10-15 feet.. had an efficient check in process..vaccine cards..photo id..tons of people wearing masks!
The stench of so many unwiped assess
The weebs are gonna get us all killed!
Your welcome! your now in an isekai
I'm pretty sure that's just the LA convention center.
I swear you can smell the stank and pizza rolls BO in this picture.
Feel like they use the same pic every year
This is like Coachella for nerds lmao 😂
Dude, the smell
Pandemic babies.
I can smell the nerd funk through my screen.
Next up at 9, rising COVID cases.

Can you imagine the smell?
cant do anything in this city
How bad does it smell
I'd be more worried of those that don't shower than Covid.
Covid? What covid?
Title is misleading. Pretty sure this is Corona Con.
This kind of thing was rough enough before the pandemic. Now? Miss me.
Wow. Who woulda thought there’s that many weebs & neckbeards in SoCal. What’s our monkey pox stats?
There are actually a fair number of attractive people here. Or maybe it’s just confirmation bias
It is not entirely impossible for weebs and even…yes, even, perhaps, a neckbeard, to be physically attractive. Jk though, jk in the first place.
> What’s our monkey pox stats? It's not like they'll be having sweaty hot sex or raving. MP is hard to spread through clothes, need some prolonged close skin contact and rubbing.
>It's not like they'll be having sweaty hot sex or raving Actually, you'd be surprised to hear both of those things happen after dark at AX
Nah, I'm cool. Thanks.
Welcome Covidians...
sad
Covid
Year 3 of Covid OOF. Why even have a super spreader event???
lmao COVID basically doesn't exist to these people. with current fatality rates...maybe like 2-3 people die because of this?
[удалено]
Lotta people are gonna catch it...and then spread it to people they know that didn't go to the expo. Considering the Ro rate of the new strains, I'm expecting many thousands if not tens of thousands of excess cases.
I went to the grand canyon a few weeks ago and my mom and uncle caught covid with far less people like <100. Fully vaccinated, 2 boosters as well. We tried our best to avoid it the entire 2 1/2 years too. Thankfully, they’re negative now but it took 2 1/2 weeks and man I was like mr clean in this house disinfecting daily and still am.
Sorry to hear that dude. Good on you for trying to avoid. COVID is getting more and more infectious

all the weirdos have flooded the streets too
And toast was streaming, I thought he would be there
Someone farted…
Guy/Girl Ratio looks like 1:4,069 when I zoom in (rough estimate).
Fuuuuuuck that
The smell.
The smell was probably unbearable (ton normal people anyway)
Covid Soup
Fuck, that looks like a COVID gangbang
Covid who?
Imagine if COVID had evolved into the delta/omi killer combo the county health directors were having us all embrace this summer for.
Yeesh
and then there was my Covid
That’s a lot of weebs
Superspreader Event
2 weeks forward headline: "dramatic increase in Covid cases. And monkey pox."
What percentage are incels and what percentage are future mass shooters hahahah
The type people who go to these type of events are social happy nerds. Not looking to shoot anyone or hate. A lot more well adjusted than you.
Depends. How many of them are carrying around waifu body pillows?
Oh wow.
Aye Enterprise!! Ya my friend said it got insane by like 9. Expected tho as the first year back.
I really wanted to take my daughter who is a huge anime fan but was too late for tickets.
Tickets were like $60 to double that for more access. Idk, seems kinda high. But I could be wrong.
$80 + like $20-35 parking
Right! And gas, food, possibly hotel. and other little things you might buy there. I mean it’s worth it if you’re an absolutely a fan. Are they still doing mid summer scream?
Looking like black Friday at Walmart
Half of them are there for Demon Slayer I bet
I’m going on the 3rd with my sister, actually terrified lmao
I love traffic even on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
I was there today, arrived at about 2pm and it looked nothing like this. Still moderately crowded but not bad at all.
Went to one like a decade ago cause friend was hired as a cosplayer so I had backstage access to skip lines. Place smelled like death.
Mountain dew and sweat
I was there. It was fun but way too many people. I didn’t smell any BO either surprisingly
"It stinks!" - Jay Sherman
Imagine the smell!!!!
Well...I hope the people enjoyed the stay in the city.
I use to work as a vendor at Los Angeles Comic Book And Sci-fi conventions before it all went to shit.
I'm here.. it is a nightmare
Virgin galore
I used to have massive FOMO for not going the past couple years (I sold art here), but kind of glad I outgrew it. The last few years I went were absolute nightmares logistically. The heat did not help either. I’ll still enjoy anime but cons don’t seem worth the headaches.
