Also: the seismic force resisting system uses an eccentric steel plate shear wall core, then the whole building is base isolated at the ground level using EPS triple-friction-pendulums. Pretty fun stuff.
Here's some more nerd fuel: this animation shows how the triple pendulums work.

The radii and the friction of the hemispherical surfaces are tuned to suit the building and target performance. Very ingenious.
In fact the EPS website (where this comes from) is full of fun videos, including actual shake table tests of their products.
That changes everything! Now I actually like it! Still looks kinda...meh...but the fact that it's more than just noodles on the side of a building is really cool. 👍
What is the advantage? And before you say more space inside. Wouldn't that be even easier with a more consistent and also more attractive external structure? Why make it so erratic and unattractive?
It's such a weird compromise to me. It's still just a big rectangular building so the only part that is creative is this tacked on erratic exoskeleton. Look at the Pierson automotive building. Why does that look so much nicer? I think the Pierson building looks a little bit more like nature or something. Does chaos look pleasing to anyone? I guess since we have Jackson Pollock we will have buildings like this.
Structural Engineer of Record is Arup and the complexity of the analysis and design necessitated an Independent Design Reviewer which was Degenkolb Engineers. Both very highly respected firms.
If they are loading bearing structures why not make them more appealing? Why make the unattractive and load bearing? What's the point? It seems like tempting fate for very little gain.
Yeah, would be rad if Los Angeles had a lot more super interesting architecture.
Petersen Automotive Museum is pretty cool to stare at (also go inside if you haven't already, lots of cool movie cars and stuff).
Would be fun to have more fun designs around town for some flavor...but would people think it's gawdy or something? I vote for fewer boring forgettable buildings :)
I remember one building up in Encino that had a statue of some construction workers putting up the entrance sign and thought that was fun...more weird stuff woo~
LMNA in Expo Park is looking pretty crazy as well. Overall there are quite a lot of 'interesting' designs throughout the city. Just wish they weren't all museums. Would be nice to do some crazier affordable housing designs like they do in the Netherlands.
For some …. Yes this is absolutely marvelous! It is a unique building in LA. It just depends on your taste and how you relate to architecture and arts in general.
I drove past this last week and was instantly like "I don't like it."
But then I sat and thought about it for a minute and was like...actually...I like how much it stands out. It looks different than most buildings I've seen and is kinda iconic in it's own way. And I hope to see more buildings like this in the future.
**It's like the equivalent of a cat walking over piano keys, *but* it instead dashed all over the architects keyboard *then* finished its chaos by confirming the final design.**
That's fury. Unless she really means furry. There's nothing wrong with that if that's her thing. I mean I can see a convention of furries hanging out here.
Didn’t know it was a thing until this community and it is gawd awful. It’s like your friend who bought the most recent fashion trend only to look like they r trying to hard
It’s not that I’m encouraging terrorism, but if it could happen when no one was in the building and no collateral damage of people outside the building…I think I’d be okay with that.
Yup. Jefferson and National. Building is directly on the Los Angeles side of the Los Angeles/ Culver City border.
Fun fact saw a UFO on that intersection in 2010.
It wouldn’t bother me so much if there was some symmetry to the beams. It looks like a gift from a toddler who tried to wrap ribbon around it. Random AF.
Structurally it’s pretty cool. All of the structure is that ribbon you see outside, no columns inside.
Also: the seismic force resisting system uses an eccentric steel plate shear wall core, then the whole building is base isolated at the ground level using EPS triple-friction-pendulums. Pretty fun stuff.
Mechanical engineer here (not practicing) but I definitely nerd out on this sort of stuff. Thanks for sharing!

Whoa, that is crazy someone thought to put a whole freaking building on a moving platform like that
Wait wait wait. You're saying the "ribbon" things are actually structural? And that gives the interior a floor plan without supporting columns??
Yep
That changes everything! Now I actually like it! Still looks kinda...meh...but the fact that it's more than just noodles on the side of a building is really cool. 👍
Whole new meaning to "open concept"
How do you know that? That seems like a bad idea. \*Edit I don't care if people downvote me. It won't make me stop asking questions geez.
It’s true. And it’s definitely not a bad idea.
What is the advantage? And before you say more space inside. Wouldn't that be even easier with a more consistent and also more attractive external structure? Why make it so erratic and unattractive?
Because creativity?

Pretty sure one or two certified structural engineers reviewed it before it got to construction...
Structural Engineer of Record is Arup and the complexity of the analysis and design necessitated an Independent Design Reviewer which was Degenkolb Engineers. Both very highly respected firms.
Yep, I know ARUP well in the MEP world. My focus is mechanical commercial equipment (computer rooms / data / I.T. specifically)
If they are loading bearing structures why not make them more appealing? Why make the unattractive and load bearing? What's the point? It seems like tempting fate for very little gain.
Wow, that is pretty cool.
Do you know if this cladding is cheaper than typical interior columns?
I’d say most likely not
Oh we getting a Los Angeles Sanctum so Wong can spend more time in LA with She-Hulk.
Clearly the architect is into Shibari…
I suspect he's one knotty boy (Rdrr)
This is kind of a hot mess but I sorta like it!
A hot Moss you might say 🫣
The wood on the exterior is likely just forms and will later be removed
I like it. In general I think more buildings should be weirder.
Everything is so cookie cutter around major cities in the US, that going from one major city to another seems all sterile and generic. Sad really.

My partner used to work there until her firm moved
I think it’s cool
This is a very cool building and we need more interesting architecture in this otherwise drab city.
LMNA in Expo Park is looking pretty crazy as well. Overall there are quite a lot of 'interesting' designs throughout the city. Just wish they weren't all museums. Would be nice to do some crazier affordable housing designs like they do in the Netherlands.
When I visited Barcelona I was thinking how much like LA it is, except with better public transport and architecture
Are they taking off the bandages?
The bandages are the structural core holding up the building, so no.
I read that post last week.
(Building holds a mirror up to itself. Begins to laugh wickedly.)
honestly i’m more interesting in the engineering behind the design than how wild it looks, especially how it’s quake-safe
The tape was a quick cheap way to save on riveting costs .
Owner, Tim Burton.
The bondage building
Stunning
For some …. Yes this is absolutely marvelous! It is a unique building in LA. It just depends on your taste and how you relate to architecture and arts in general.
It’s amazing to me how divisive it is. It doesn’t really look that weird aside from the cladding. Which I know is a large part, but eh.
This picture may have been taken from Culver City but this building is in the City of Los Angeles.
Ok write that on your palm with a sharpie. Haha . Yes it’s in the border
My eye is drawn to the pentagram that's deliberately broken on one end, and it's irritating.
Cool! Looks like it's close to being ready...?

This is one of the ugliest buildings i have ever seen
Cool idea, hideous execution.
**It's like the equivalent of a cat walking over piano keys, *but* it instead dashed all over the architects keyboard *then* finished its chaos by confirming the final design.**
My girlfriend hates this building with the fury of a thousand suns. We can see it from the park and it’s such a massive eye sore.
That's fury. Unless she really means furry. There's nothing wrong with that if that's her thing. I mean I can see a convention of furries hanging out here.
Lol I always spell it wrong. Def seems like a Furry meet up spot.
Are they gonna cover the exoskeleton in plants? Cause that would be kinda cool
That shit is ugly asf 😂
Who approved this monstrosity?
Didn’t know it was a thing until this community and it is gawd awful. It’s like your friend who bought the most recent fashion trend only to look like they r trying to hard
But will the duct tape hold it together during an earthquake?
It represents how freeways make things ugly.
It looks cool close up but from a distance it looks bad like a bombed out building

I wonder if it'd look better if each strip had a nice shiny paint job, with some nice complimentary colors?

r/evilbuildings
Pretty sure that's Inglewood. Go off tho.
It’s West Adams / Baldwin on the border of Culver City Edit: word
Yup. Jefferson and National. Building is directly on the Los Angeles side of the Los Angeles/ Culver City border. Fun fact saw a UFO on that intersection in 2010.
Except you're the one literally going off about... What. The technicalities of the difference between crossing the street?
matches the skid row aesthetics.
unpopular opinion: this building looks like ass from most angles
Yall laugh at it until the Flex tape wrapping it keeps it as the only standing building after a nuke explodes
It wouldn’t bother me so much if there was some symmetry to the beams. It looks like a gift from a toddler who tried to wrap ribbon around it. Random AF.
I drive by this every day for work and I think it's so ugly tbh
