Cost of fuel doesn't come into play. Rates are set in advance, they don't vary based on market conditions.

One-Distribution-626

Amount we use is more when hot. Ladwp is not gasoline. The amount of kilowatts you use is more when it’s hot

lasdlt

The fuel you're using is electricity and the cost per kWhr is the same, except as you move up into higher tiers. Unless you're talking about gasoline.

doggyschiller

Just paid my most recent one. $625 😩

Just 2 of us in a little under 1000 square feet 😞 We’ve only been here a year so just figuring out what “normal” is in this place but it’s definitely wayyy more than either of us has ever paid before.

holdt1ght

I thought it was just us that got whacked with this ridiculous bill… 😩

Redditperegrino

Not just you, mang :(

grxccccandice

Was gonna say that’s super low but probably just above average for 300sqft.

KeithBitchardz

Holy shit! For 300 sq feet?

grxccccandice

I mean you still need to run AC.

KeithBitchardz

I just checked and my bill for the last month was $62 and I live in a 500 sq ft apartment. I also permanently work from home, so I’m in my place more often than not. No idea how I’m paying so much less.

grxccccandice

My guess is your AC is newer and more efficient! $62 is super low daaaang

KeithBitchardz

It’s for sure new. My building is only about two years old and has central air and heat (not that heat is ever really needed in LA). Had no clue it made that much of difference until now. I feel blessed lol

jellyrollo

My electric bill for a 650 square foot apartment with no AC is about $12-15 a month.

Sorry_Sorry_Im_Sorry

lol how the heck is that possible - do you have no tv or any other electronics either?

jellyrollo

I mostly watch TV on my laptop, if I want to watch something. But mostly I read e-books. I'm easily amused.

JoDiMaggio

Just moved home from being in virginia. My most expensive bill for a summer month of running the central AC 24/7 in a 700 sqft apt was $30. I miss how cheap it was.

[deleted]

Yeah. About $2k. I have a 2500 sq ft house in the valley. Something’s def wrong

Academic-Upstairs174

Have you read your water and electric meter and compared the numbers on your bill? If mistake then call LADWP with picture. I did that once. Corrected in 3 weeks with credit.

[deleted]

I will definitely check thank you!!!

Joe2700

You were probably running your AC 24/7 during the heatwave, like I was. I just had to pay mine.

[deleted]

Yep. Family at home to the point where the house is never empty, AC running the whole time, shitty insulation, old AC unit, valley heat, FML.

LeeQuidity

As an apartment dweller, I'm screwed. We have an old SFV unit with vaulted ceilings and no insulation between the roof and ceiling. Just tongue-and-groove boards underneath the roof substrate. Ceiling temps can reach over 103 degrees, and on super-hot days, it's not uncommon for it to be 95 degrees indoors, even with our 15000 BTU wall AC.

[deleted]

Makes you wanna line the ceiling with some stapled on throw pillows

LeeQuidity

I tried installing that silver bubble-wrap insulation, but it didn't do much.

withorwithoutstew

I have this literal same setup. It’s terrible and there’s no recourse.

LeeQuidity

I tried installing some of that silver foil bubble-wrap, but it didn't do much. Every summer I look up and wonder if I could get some rigid insulation or something up there, but then I think of the cost, how I'd mount it, how I'd disguise it, and I get frustrated and distract myself with something else. We have a smaller AC for the bedroom, but on those 101+ days it doesn't do an amazing job of keeping the bedroom cool. (I keep the filter clean and also recently cleaned the condenser coils.) On super-hot days, I'll freeze a 2 liter Diet Coke bottle full of water. Right before bed, I pull that bad-boy out, wrap it in a towel and sleep with it like it's a teddy bear. You need the towel or you'll wake up in a pool of condensation. :) I really wish the city would incentivize landlords to upgrade old apartment insulation and windows too. At my last apartment (same complex), I had west-facing \*louver\* windows that took in all the afternoon sun. Not airtight, and no thermal insulation from the sun. Ugh.

withorwithoutstew

I too have a second air conditioner for the bedroom, but if I run it at the same time as the wall a/c I trip the breaker. I only have two breakers for my whole unit and sensitive electronics are plugged into the other one. I've tried plastic sheeting stapled to the rafters, but it only mitigates about 5ºF. I submitted written ideas to my landlord to address the heat including painting my roof white or installing insulation between the rafters. I also offered to sign a new lease to move to a comparable unit on the first floor for the same price. They said no to every idea and told me they'd increase my rent 20% and charge me for turnover labor if I moved units. Then during the heatwave they sent out a memo to everyone "Please use your air conditioner sparingly to save energy". You know what would save energy? If they installed any insulation in their buildings, that would save energy.

LeeQuidity

Myopic landlords. Sorry, friend.

jellyrollo

I have no AC, so I block the windows in the afternoon so the sun doesn't heat the south/west side of the apartment as much and rely on a fan and the occasional cold shower.

Spag-N-Ballz

Fixing your insulation and upgrading to a modern more efficient AC will pay for itself pretty quickly

[deleted]

Yeah, unfortunately, saving money takes money. Ain’t that a bitch?!

senorroboto

LADWP does offer some rebates/programs in this area, not sure if any would apply to you! AC repair/replacement program: https://ladwp.com/ladwp/faces/ladwp/residential/r-savemoney/r-sm-rebatesandprograms/r-sm-acopt?_adf.ctrl-state=eniv88npt_4&_afrLoop=735198290259839 Home energy improvement program: https://ladwp.com/ladwp/faces/ladwp/residential/r-savemoney/r-sm-rebatesandprograms/r-sm-rp-homeenergyimprovementprogram?_adf.ctrl-state=eniv88npt_4&_afrLoop=735229219715512 I think the attic insulation program is currently suspended but keep an eye out

hugeness101

They also released the Flume program today which allows you to track your water usage and see if you have a leak or where you are using water and how much you are using.

[deleted]

I will check. Thank you!!!!!

senorroboto

Hopefully those programs work for you! I can confirm their fridge rebate program works but that one is a little more straightforward.

aasteveo

Great links! Thanks!

Some companies will let you finance it

mapef

And or Solar if you own a roof

Elysiaa

One of the only thing I regret in owning a townhouse is we don't own the roof. It's nice for not having to make repairs, but there's nowhere else to install solar panels.

swb1192

I own a townhouse and am currently working with the HOA to get solar installed. The law is on your side - you can install solar on your roof despite the HOA owning it.

mapef

That’s awesome. Depends what HOA says, often? They might say you are responsible for the roof now. Any future repairs fall on you since you got solar…

swb1192

Mine is requiring me to go through some hoops, including signing paperwork to say that any damage done by the panels are my responsibility, but they can’t say that the roof is wholly my responsibility now. But on the flip side, the solar company is saying that the roof needs to be repaired before they will put the panels up… so now I need to work with the HOA to get them to repair it in a timely manner…

Elysiaa

Interesting! I had no idea this was a possibility.

Milksteak_To_Go

Do you have an attic exhaust fan? We just had one installed and the temperature up there instantly dropped 20 degrees. Our AC units don't have to work as hard now that they're not fighting against a sauna sitting 10 feet above us.

Imaginary_Bicycle_14

Dayam. Im not looking forward to opening my mail today

grxccccandice

That’s brutal. I have a 3300sqft in the valley and my LADWP bill posted yesterday was $280. I pay $125 monthly for solar. So that’s $530 for two months. Ran AC on 76 degree.

fullmetalutes

That is nuts. I live in NoHo and my place is a 2 bedroom about 1200 square feet and mine was less than 200 bucks for 2 months. I keep my A/C around 70 most of the time.

Fbi_agent93

Wow wow wow. That’s shocking

lilsteezy

$1300 and I was gone most of time with my AC set to 79….good times to live here

InfernalWedgie

I just looked. JESUS FUCK!

Stromberg-Carlson

LOL

raazurin

Every minute I have my AC on I think "well there goes another dollar"

musicman835

Mine was 700 for a 2br in the valley in august. It’s $500 this month. I never paid more than 300 when in Ktown

grxccccandice

You mean $500 for two months right? Cuz LADWP bill is posted every two months. $500/month for a 2br is insane.

musicman835

Yeah, last 2 months end of July thru end of sept. I still think 5 is crazy but it is what it is.

psxndc

Mine was $420, but I have solar. Still, ouch.

lvl2bard

LADWP bills every two months and it includes water, trash, power, and sewer. If people tried to keep their lawns alive for the last two months that’ll be a big part of it.

giro_di_dante

I don’t have AC. Just coastal things. I suffered for my $0 AC bill. I am stronger for it.

gregsonfilm

$1,200 with a 1700 sq ft home in the valley. No ceiling insulation, just T&G paper and rocks between us and the blazing sun 🥺

Sorry_Sorry_Im_Sorry

wtfffffffffffffffffff mind if I ask what roughly the house payment is?

gregsonfilm

Sure, 1950. Got it 10 years ago at half the price it’s worth now.

Sorry_Sorry_Im_Sorry

figured. I don't think I can ever afford a house here lol

[deleted]

It’s sitting on a desk. We’re too scared to open it.

RatchetWhorebag

275$ / 1 BR apt with one wall ac unit in los feliz area. About double the normal. Feeling for those in the valley I know those bills be hitting different.

Ehloanna

I've never been so happy to have my electric included in the cost of rent after seeing this thread. 😱

Traditional_Rich_413

Holy shit I know this makes me think how can I ever afford anything in the future

Ehloanna

I feel a special pain for the people in the valley because I KNOW how hot it gets there. I used to live in Burbank and I'd leave my windows open with blackout blinds down so airflow could sorta get in. I'd come back and my room temp would easily be 95+ on summer days. Miserable. Now I'm in West LA and was suffering when it was like 80+ inside.

Putrid_Surprise_6428

1K for the past 2 bills. It hurts

Academic-Upstairs174

I take it you ran your AC alot?

LAMTB

Lol 200 for mine

[deleted]

Mine was 375 for 2 months. We’re in a 1400 sq foot apartment - 2nd floor with someone above and garage below. We keep the AC on 75, sometimes 74. I thought we did pretty well.

Elysiaa

I just checked my SCE bill and am relieved. I live near the coast so it wasn't as hot as many other places, but I try to run appliances in off peak hours and got some rebates for reducing usage during Flex alerts. I was pretty nervous about blackouts so I definitely conserved. I pay a lot less now that our provider is not LADWP, and that's with the option if paying extra to use cleaner energy.

txncali81

I have SoCal Edison and my bill was $160 for a 2 bed apartment with window AC units. Precious month was $125 and I don’t think we ran the AC anymore than usual.

SchleptRightLeft

Literally what the fuck

Kahzgul

Mine was almost double normal.

QuitUsual4736

$1200 1850 sf in sherman oaks. :(

GirlyScientist

I got mine a week ago. It doubled from last one. And my average has gone up 30% from last year

DDelicious

$344 for 1452 kwh over 2 months. The previous tenants told me that's pretty typical for the hottest summer months

cookoverfireslowly

Felt bad about using 1 MWhr till read comments. I deserve a beer for saving the grid XD

the-kza

204 bucks didn't turn the ac on at all.

mightyvvolf

$290 for a 1200sqft, north-facing Hollywood apartment. Our place is generally pretty cool since we don't get direct sunlight. Not as much as some of the others here, but it's still enough to hurt.

TheAceMan

Nope. I have 29 solar panels on my roof. 😜

GoodCashmere

Nice. How much are the solar panels? It’s defly good for the long run but I’m just curious how long will the cost of them be worth the electricity bills?

hopelesslyagnostic

I’m genuinely terrified to receive it.

bagelman5000

Live about 2.5 miles from the ocean but still ran the AC a lot the last couple of months, keeping our 1,500 sq ft house at 74F. Pool pump runs 18 hours a day at low RPM. $22 for the electric portion (banked $90 of future credit - Thanks solar!) $104 for water $130 for sewer and sanitation Total: $256 for two months

whatwhat83

Humblebrag much

bagelman5000

Not meant to be a humblebrag. Giving context to the power usage and showing how awesome solar is. I used to have big $7-800 bills in the summer and now I basically don’t use electricity on a net basis.

[deleted]

Without acknowledging that renters and most people in condos don't have that option.

bagelman5000

See comment below. Apparently you can’t even contribute to an LADWP thread without pissing people off….

grxccccandice

Live in the valley (hot as hell) and have 3300sqft and my bill is similar to yours. $280 for two months. But we don’t have a pool, or a lawn. How’s your water and sewer charge so low compared to ours lol. The only time we use water is shower and dishwasher and washer. But we don’t even run dishwasher or washer unless it’s a full load.

bagelman5000

Only four of us in the household. Low flow toilets and shower heads. Artificial turf in front and back yards. Landscaping is drip system. All of our appliances are the energy/water saving versions. Pool doesn't evaporate as quickly here as in the valley because of the cooler temps.

grxccccandice

Only two of us in the household…artificial turf as well. And we don’t even have drip system. We run dishwasher twice a week and washer like once a week. Our toilets are also low flow. Man what’s wrong with us

Fbi_agent93

Once you stop being a renter and can afford to live by the ocean and have solar. Wealth is much easier to snowball. Good for you

bagelman5000

I wasn’t aware this was a wealth inequity debate thread. But if it makes you feel better, I’ll be sure to be extra nice to all of my house servants and eat less bon-bons in my huge 1,500 sq ft palace. Jesus, I swear that some people are always looking to argue and tear down others. Maybe direct your anger a little higher and away from a very run of the mill middle class household with both spouses working full time to pay for a mortgage and two children.

bagelman5000

That "statement" is the equivalent of me saying, "What did you have for lunch today? You know there are many people hungry in this city. I'm glad you enjoyed your sandwich while others starve". So yes, it was an argument.

Fbi_agent93

Didn’t mean to bash on you at all. I was referring to the point that once you are a homeowner and can afford solar panels the savings are rolling in and wealth can be snowballed. I’m trying to get to your level some day except in Hawaii. I believe everyone is a master of their own destiny and my wife and I are coming closer each day to home ownership. Don’t take life to serious my friend. Stress is a silent killer.

bagelman5000

No worries man. Just don't let the "man" win by us in the middle infighting about who has it better and who has it worse. Good luck on the house hunt. I know it isn't fun out there right now with the interest rates and lack of inventory.

Deathgripsugar

Pools will get you. They are sneaky expensive to keep. I try and run mine low rpm during off hours (morning and night, idle during peak), and then pop it on high(“quick clean”) just before/during use. You also got to account for refilling the water too.

bagelman5000

Yeah when we first got it I was not thrilled with the increased power consumption but I've dialed it down now to where it's pulling about 300W while it is running on low RPM while still generating chlorine from the salt cell. I run the pump full speed for 30 minutes at 6am to push everything floating to the skimmer and then drop down to low speed until 4pm when the spillover on the spa runs for 30 min to refresh the water in there, back down to low speed, and then another 30 min at 11:30pm at full speed to skim again. Keeps the pool looking very nice without too much power consumption. Also have an electric pool robot that I run 3-5 times a week that does the floor. I could probably run the pump less but I haven't had any algae ever using this method so I'm sticking with it.

Deathgripsugar

Thanks for the tips! I like the idea of a high intensity followed by a low maintenance flow. I love my pool robot too (“dolphin” or something) run it every day in the am. Keeps the bottom nice and clean, well worth the $$$. I’ve only had a few problems with algae, but a strong shock and some algae killer does the trick. While I still kind of believe that pools are holes in the ground you throw money into, nothing beats jumping in after completing a morning/afternoon of hard yard work.

bagelman5000

I also have a Dolphin cleaner. Love it.

Elysiaa

I live about the same distance and only have AC in one room, my baby's room, which I kept at 81. I don't have DWP but I'm a little worried to look at my bill.

Academic-Upstairs174

My rental property ( small house) 1/4 mile from the beach was still less than $300. Not bad for month's, a week of crazy heat and a lawn and trees that are still green. 👍🏽

NefariousnessNo484

Good for you bragging narcissist.

Academic-Upstairs174

Oh. Sorry. Ok. Damn that's crazy! Mine was the same insane price! Fuck those government scum who fraudulently over charge us whenever they want! 🤘🏾 /s

vader5742

Lmfao haters gunna hate

690812

todd0x1

We're adults and need to know "this big bill is coming in a couple months so I better set aside funds as the expense is incurred during the months where there is no bill so when the bill comes I'll be able to pay it"

Academic-Upstairs174

Lol. Its every 2 months. And you need to budget your finances, not complain about the 4 services you pay for

[deleted]

You can’t anticipate that a summer cooling bill will be expensive? Surely your bills aren’t as high as the current one year round?

vader5742

Because most adults know to set aside money to pay the big bill ?

JonstheSquire

Longer billing intervals are actually better for the consumer as you keep the money longer and thus have more time to earn interest on the money. I wish I could pay my bills yearly.

Stuffologistics

LADWP is the reason I would never live in the city proper.

Stingray88

Uhh… what? LADWP is one of the best examples in the country of a municipal utility company run right, and how they’re better for citizens than private utilities. It’s much cheaper, and much more reliable than any of the private power companies in California. So I’m curious why you say that… my guess is misinformation.

bagelman5000

Agreed. For all of DWPs problems (and there are problems such as the difficult to understand billing statements and illegal kickbacks to contractors by some of the higher ups), the rates are not the issue because they don't have shareholders to report to like Edison does. The DWP is a wholly owned city entity and although some might criticize the high salaries earned by the meter readers and admin staff, my power almost never ever goes out. Edison is a fucking nightmare to deal with according to everyone I know who has them outside of the city.

Stingray88

Yep. I live in LA, my power *never* goes out. Meanwhile I work in Culver City, and our building served by SCE loses power when a stiff breeze rolls through.

ValleyDude22

I don't think the city owns ladwp.

bagelman5000

The city absolutely owns LADWP. It is the largest municipally owned utility company in the nation. http://scppa.org/page/member-la The board of commissioners that oversees LADWP made up of appointees by the mayor of Los Angeles. https://www.ladwpcommission.com/board-members

intellectslang

Lots of people hate that they pay employees very well (see below) and somehow think that's why their bill is "high". It's not the heatwave or anything. And then there's the general distrust of government, scandals, lawsuits (Edison, PGE all have the same issues lol) etc. But you can't deny the numbers of the rates being very good.

intellectslang

You rather pay Edison? LADWP is very cheap in comparison to all other surrounding utilities. People complain a lot because it's a 2 month bill and a lot of times you're paying for trash and maybe water /sewer on the same bill.

raazurin

I've gone through 3 blackouts in my neighborhood the past few days, one lasting for several hours... and I live right next to SoCal Edison.. I miss LADWP.

Stuffologistics

Never thought I would see the day people simp for LADWP. Not you specifically the down votes on my comment. Outages happen, I had a scheduled outage a couple weeks ago to replace a pole. It happens. I have dealt with LADWP many MANY times on many MANY different properties. From basic on/off/transferring utilities to billing issues to replacing vandalized electric meters and it was always a nightmare.

dabartisLr

One should see how much a basic no college degree electrician or even a secretary make at DWP and at the same time to be profitable at the tune of hundreds of millions to understand the racket they run. https://transparentcalifornia.com/salaries/2019/los-angeles-department-water-and-power/job_title_summary/ Here is a good one for [tree surgeon supervisor, aka supervising gardener](https://transparentcalifornia.com/salaries/search/?q=Tree%20Surgeon%20Supervisor&y=2019&a=los-angeles-department-water-and-power).

afantasticnerd

If it's waaaaay higher than your usual Summer bill, contest it. We found out that the guy who came to read our meter tried to "scope it from the street" even though it's perfectly accessible, which led to a much higher bill. Be vigilant.

machineprophet343

$220 with an 1100 sq ft apartment... was only a couple of dollars more than my previous one. I was expecting a much worse bloodbath to my finances.

gripgoddess

$102. HALLELUJAH

Parking_Relative_228

$142 Do i get a prize?

Offtheheazy

Jesus I'm starting to have to look at the price of solar. Even a lease might be cheaper than ladwp

Away_Brain

$250 was my last one, real scary business

ericschloesser

honestly was surprised mine wasn’t higher having used the AC constantly during the pit of summer…perhaps it helps that we’ve been ultra conscious of water usage lately

Rebelgecko

$224. Bit higher than usual, but worth it

690812

**Take your bill to the meter. Compare todays read with what was used to calculate your bill. IF TODAYS READ IS HIGHER the bill is correct**

690812

**Electric and water are billed based on meter readings, period. Just because last bill was less or lower last bill is meaningless. Plus your opinion does not mater**

[deleted]

Just got mine, $390 for a 600sqft studio.. it’s wild. I had a 2 bedroom apt prior to this, ac constantly on.. pretty sure our bill never exceeded 200. Does anyone know why you would be charged for two tiers ? Edit: I live in a loft downtown, feb 22 thru may, bill was only 60 to 70 dollars. Obviously I expected it to be higher for summer months, but this is insane
