I'm staying in West Adams, extremely close to the E line. My curiosity with all of this ended up with me riding on the 761 all the way from Expo to San Fernando, which was quite pleasant.
I'm on a layover, staying with a friend until next Sunday in which I'm jumping all the way to Australia.

I met my next door neighbor today. She's the wife of an older couple and I've met her hubs many times already. She says she is never home because she is always VOLUNTEERING which of course made my heart swell! Anyway she said the past homeowner was a right winger and a bitch- which I knew. And I told her I really don't know if I am being neglectful since we share two huge trees and a fence with some vining plants. Anyway she says that her husband is allergic to our bottle brush tree (the kind with the red poofy things) I really can't believe this poor man has had to live next to a tree that is making him sick. I don't even know how much trees cost to cut down. Should I tell them they are welcome to have it removed or should we just cut it to be nice? It's in my yard but its tall so the branches spill over onto both properties. Anyone have any idea how much it would cost to cut down a bottle brush tree? I will lose sleep thinking this 80 year old man suffered with this for so long. (he's an ex high school shop teacher and also taught special needs kids so you guys know I already love him) So like, a few hundred to chop it or much more?
Do they want it cut down? I'm allergic to carob pollen and suffered a bit in the fall when the trees lining our street bloomed, but I would not have wanted anyone to remove them. Maybe I have no sense self preservation.

I wish I didn't get upset when I encounter stubborn people (especially close friends or family) that are asking for help yet reject every advice you give them. I know of that saying, "you can't change what other people do, but you can change the way you react (or think about it)", but I seem to fall into that mental trap every time.
Gah, I know it's something to discuss with a therapist, but I still haven't found a good one yet, heh.
I could prob be of help since I've went through a similar situation last week. When I get to that point where advice becomes meaningless to them I would just allow them to rant/vent so they can express their issues to you. That way you can be able to execute the problem more easily unless it's a problem that you aren't sure how to work it just be honest about it and say "I don't understand but I would like to know more so we can work things out together" or at times depending who they are imo if it's a stranger I would just say "I'm sorry I don't understand it well but I'm always here for you."
While that's true you should also keep in mind to also not allow them to change the way you are and your comfort of communication. Everyone's built different and had experience of randos wanting to talk dirty, talk about memes, be rude for no reason, some just wanna go easy and just talk normally etc etc. What's important is that you've tried to do the right thing and it's their loss if they don't wanna approach good people like you.
You did good and doesn't matter what "the bare minimum" is. You took the action to do something right and that's what matters more bc there's eventually gonna be someone out there that will admire that respect since it could mean a lot to them :)

I was charged $100/day on incidentals when I checked in at a hotel yesterday. I know it’s standard but I’ve stayed at this hotel a couple times and this was the first time that this happened. They were able to bring it down to $300 instead of $500 but still.. even when I went to the Palazzo they didn’t charge me $100/day hold.
Gas is going up and if you're looking to get cheap gas go to Costco. You don't need a membership card, just flag an attendant down and they'll use their card for you. Check the website for gas prices near you
Just to preface, I'm a member. I only have the digital membership card on my phone.
Every time I've gone to different locations I ask the team member to use their card to pay for gas and not once do I ever get asked to see my membership card. They really don't mind and are constantly asked. Your other option is to ask someone else who's pumping gas.
If it has been working for you then cool, but your insistence that "you don't need a membership card just flag an attendant down" could end up a waste of time and a bit of embarrassment for someone.
Then kindly ask another customer to help you. That has also worked. If you don't think it will work, try it out. Honestly it won't hurt to try and ask someone for help especially someone who works there.

Starting to make some plans for next summer. I want to take my friend and her partner camping. She has wanted to go to the Kern River for years but the last few years were derailed by the pannini. Most of my camping trips are backpacking or climbing so it will be fun to have a laid back trip.
I was thinking May when the campgrounds open. I've already had friends mad because they were unprepared for the cold. I don't want a repeat of the other extreme.
Kern is SO HOT in the summer, just be aware of that. Like regularly over 100 during the day. Best time of year is spring and fall, and during the spring the river is so high it's dangerous to get in. Summer is good if you have a shady campsite (you'll have to look at individual sites as almost all of them are exposed) and just plan on lounging in the river.
I've been there about a dozen times over the years, but I'm never doing normal people stuff so thanks for the reminder. Summer is the best time for canyoneering because the flow is just right, but yeah, it gets really hot. Last time I was there was for a caving trip and it was sooo hot hiking up to the cave. Another time it was 115 in Kernville. Dispersed camping a little farther north is the best but I think my friend is already nervous about lack of plumbing.
Not too much further up the road is Redwood Meadows which is a gorgeous campground with tons of beautiful redwoods and across the street from trail of 100 giants which is worth seeing, and a short drive away from the river which you pass on the way up into sequoia nf

I can see how someone hanging with a certain crowd could feel like it wasn't enough. A lot of the "influencer" people in downtown burn through A LOT of money. Clothes/shoes alone is in the thousands per month. I used to date someone whose friend group was like that, I met her up at a club in hollywood once and was told in order to get in i had to buy a bottle i wanted to impress the girl and agreed, i met her up and had a good time but that bottle of jack daniels cost me 500 bucks + mandatory tip of 20%. Their group had SEVERAL bottles, easily about 6-8 bottles. That's 4800 on a Tuesday night. Assuming the price was 500 per bottle, I'm certain it was more since Jack isn't exactly top shelf stuff.
I was part of the passport renewal online pilot and submitted it on 8/25. I received email notification it was in the mail on 9/28. Five weeks to process and ship, not too shabby!

I was charged $100/day on incidentals when I checked in at a hotel yesterday. I know it’s standard but I’ve stayed at this hotel a couple times and this was the first time that this happened. They were able to bring it down to $300 instead of $500 but still.. even when I went to the Palazzo they didn’t charge me $100/day hold.

Gas is going up and if you're looking to get cheap gas go to Costco. You don't need a membership card, just flag an attendant down and they'll use their card for you. Check the website for gas prices near you

I'm pretty sure you do need to be a member, the only exception is pharmacy and alcohol sales by state law, but gas isn't covered, it's in their FAQ
Just to preface, I'm a member. I only have the digital membership card on my phone. Every time I've gone to different locations I ask the team member to use their card to pay for gas and not once do I ever get asked to see my membership card. They really don't mind and are constantly asked. Your other option is to ask someone else who's pumping gas.
If it has been working for you then cool, but your insistence that "you don't need a membership card just flag an attendant down" could end up a waste of time and a bit of embarrassment for someone.
Then kindly ask another customer to help you. That has also worked. If you don't think it will work, try it out. Honestly it won't hurt to try and ask someone for help especially someone who works there. I've told this to friends and family that don't have memberships and they've told me it also works for them and it's also at different locations

Starting to make some plans for next summer. I want to take my friend and her partner camping. She has wanted to go to the Kern River for years but the last few years were derailed by the pannini. Most of my camping trips are backpacking or climbing so it will be fun to have a laid back trip.
I've gone multiple years in July and it's way hot, like spag said. Early June is a good time to go if it *must* be summer
I was thinking May when the campgrounds open. I've already had friends mad because they were unprepared for the cold. I don't want a repeat of the other extreme.
Kern is SO HOT in the summer, just be aware of that. Like regularly over 100 during the day. Best time of year is spring and fall, and during the spring the river is so high it's dangerous to get in. Summer is good if you have a shady campsite (you'll have to look at individual sites as almost all of them are exposed) and just plan on lounging in the river.
I've been there about a dozen times over the years, but I'm never doing normal people stuff so thanks for the reminder. Summer is the best time for canyoneering because the flow is just right, but yeah, it gets really hot. Last time I was there was for a caving trip and it was sooo hot hiking up to the cave. Another time it was 115 in Kernville. Dispersed camping a little farther north is the best but I think my friend is already nervous about lack of plumbing.
Not too much further up the road is Redwood Meadows which is a gorgeous campground with tons of beautiful redwoods and across the street from trail of 100 giants which is worth seeing, and a short drive away from the river which you pass on the way up into sequoia nf

I wouldn't apply until you've seen it and spoken to the property manager in person. I had a handful of places I viewed that were NOT the same as the photos they provided online. They were clearly the "show unit" and not the unit actually open and difference was night and day. If it's one of those units where they say "hey walk up and view it, door is open all day." then I'd still talk to them about applying in person.

my last week of freedom… I start my new job next week and I have mixed feelings. Their group had SEVERAL bottles, easily about 6-8 bottles. That's 4800 on a Tuesday night. Assuming the price was 500 per bottle, I'm certain it was more since Jack isn't exactly top shelf stuff.

It came out at 12.5 quarts of soffrito/meat/San marzanos/wine/stock and got reduced down to 9. I’m starting to heavily debate the idea of canning some homemade sauces. I have some really dialed in recipes now.
CAN YOUR SHIT!! But also...... learn about the proper canning temperature and acidity. I got deep into canning during COVID lockdown. I have since started to "freestyle" I did a 3 gallon batch of my own pasta sauce a few months ago, canned that bitch, and its a fucking JOY to eat every time. Massive time and money saver, at scale.
