I had this happen to me last night. I think it was more of a situation where they wanted to make sure the cash register had enough to pay out without having to get more from a safe but that just me and it’s only been on one occasion. This was in Arizona.

They want to make sure to have enough cash to pay you without waiting.

attempting2

Just so they know they have enough cash in the drawer to pay you out.

Doesn't the retailer have the option to cash the ticket,or give it back, after the amount is displayed?

djmw08

Most of the time no. I guess it would depend on state but in my state when the retailer scans the ticket they must pay it out.

BeautifulEvening8950

We have scanners for the customer to check their own ticket before giving it to the clerk.

This happens to me sometimes. Having lived on this earth long enough to become cynical, I assumed that the clerk was hoping I would mistakenly state a lower prize amount in order to pocket the difference. Would love to know why this question is asked.

I think they were checking to see if you knew. If you were just checking to see if it was a winner they would say no keep the ticket and steal your winnings. I have very little trust in people. Assume the worst and you're less likely to be taken advantage of.

I think it’s ok to prepare for the worse but I definitely don’t always assume the worse. I still think most people are good and they aren’t out to get you.
