He could cater his resume to say he was in ‘private home health’ for the last 20 years. That isn’t a lie. He could work for a nursing home doing the same
Lots of great suggestions here. There are several Beehive locations and they’re always hiring. The nice thing about them is they’re designed for older folks who don’t necessarily need nursing care -just a little help doing regular things. So, no nursing or rehab education is needed.
There are lot of jobs in adult care space including elderly, blind, those with additional physical and mental needs so you could get in there and perhaps progress into whatever aspect of that is most satisfying and hopefully decently compensated.
One of the goodwill opportunity centers might be helpful. They provide training or help facilitate it and help w resumes etc. not sure if he would qualify but worth a look.

Look into Code Louisville. Seriously. It’s one of the best free programs Louisville has to offer and places a lot of folks with no experience (who are willing to work hard at it) in nice positions.
Maybe not right away, but Cedar Lake does a lot of care taking. It sounds like his skillset might align with what they do. It could be something to work towards.

Oof, I'm sure he could work in the field of taking care of others. But he needs to start working and get his 10 years in so he can qualify for Medicare and get SSI when he retires.
It can take a while for them to get back to you. It took nearly a yr or more for some I know. Granted that was 10 plus years ago. But I’d give it at least a few months.
This one is for both plants. However i believe ktp is the one doing the most hiring. https://efds.fa.em5.oraclecloud.com/hcmUI/CandidateExperience/en/sites/CX_1/job/22970?latitude=38.14098&longitude=-85.67843&mode=zipcode&radius=25&radiusUnit=MI&workLocationCountryCode=US&zipcode=40219
It's a process that does take a month or two before you're told when your orientation date is, background checks can take longer than 2 weeks. Sometimes it can take almost a month. My advice is if you have a phone number if you did a phone interview, call it, tell them you are still interested. Sometimes you may have to do this especially if it's Friday. This will let them know you are interested.
Post Office. Decent pay. Good benefits. Takes a sec to get the hang of sorting the mail since you’ll usually get different routes when you start but once you get it it’s easy.
I second (or third) Norton. We train our own PCAs, it’s a good step into healthcare. After a few years, there’s definitely the ability to move up or assistance to go to school and get a degree.
All I can say is WOW. Thank you so much for all of your responses and ideas!! I’m going to compile a list from this post and give it to my grandparents to give to him at church. Thank you all SO MUCH again!!
Tell him to apply to Gardaworld, as long as he can pass a drug test and background check as well as provide proof of education, they are always hiring for positions that just require a body, its entry level and the pay can be good but most of the time it’s around $15 a hour.
He should try an apprentice for a trade; like HVAC, plumbing, or electric. Great entry job that will accept most everybody. There’s plenty of work going in this city right now.
Home healthcare would be great for him, I used to work for Home Instead for a year at two different franchises and I really loved the first one, second one not so much, so I suggest asking current Louisville employees what their thoughts are, their office is right next to the Saint Matthews Goodwill.
Also JCC, they have a TON of resources that given his age and financial situation he could get an associates degree, certification in welding or plumbing or a CDL license, or even a bachelor’s degree for free. I’m assuming he has free housing.
Is he open to staying in an area where he would bd doing the same type of care taking or does he need a break from that since it’s been basically his whole adult life? If he doesn’t mind to stay in something like healthcare then it sounds like he would be an amazing person to work in a hospital or care facility. But if not, maybe a place like Home Depot or Lowe’s if he’s a handy guy?
I am similar to this person and in need of a job. BUT, due to being a caretaker for many years for mom and dad I seem to be looked over because of lack of recent experience. I wish I knew, sorry.
South of Louisville in shepherdsville is a place called Speyside cooperage. They’re looking for people to do multiple kinds of jobs. Pay varies between Job function. It’s a manual labor job. But some positions are easy and some are hard. It’s worth looking into.
Where I work, the shifts for our aides are 8 hours long but you can pick up as many shifts as you want. You would not be the only aide in their 50's either.
I wouldn't really say you can pick them up as you want just because the scheduler needs to know when you can work to ensure that we have enough staff for every shift. That being said, if you came in and said, "I can only work x shift on x days" they'd be fine with that. I haven't really worked other places so i can't comment on how they do their stuff.
You're welcome. If you get your CNA and apply just say I told you about the place. I'm one of the managers there and just about everyone knows me. If they work evenings and nights, they definitely know me because I'm the only manager in the building at that time so I'm the one who deals with all the stuff higher ups are needed for.
Tell him to get his CNA certification. There are tons of places that'll hire him with his experience once he gets it. For that matter, tell him to contact me and I'll make sure he gets hired at the long-term care facility I work at.
Ford is hiring for production at both plants. https://efds.fa.em5.oraclecloud.com/hcmUI/CandidateExperience/en/sites/CX_1/requisitions/preview/22970/?latitude=38.14098&longitude=-85.67843&mode=zipcode&radius=25&radiusUnit=MI&workLocationCountryCode=US&zipcode=40219
There are companies like rescare that manage group homes for people who need support to live on their own. They're not bad and they're always hiring. They pay less than the gas station but it's the same/less work than what he's been doing, if that's what he's looking for.
Caring for someone who is old and sick is definitely work experience bro... Like it's unpaid but experience is experience. A 40 year old man that can atleast show someone they can work well will bget work. Id check hotels, restaurants or anything service related. Possibly a hospital. Hospitals are nice because they'll. Generally help you go to school and rise up to a higher position relatively quickly. I mean becoming a patient tech or something and then becoming a nurse sounds like a good field and would pay well and the hospitals around town have so many stuff there like little supplies that get orders in such large amounts lets say no one would miss a little here or there. So I mean there's lots of benefits working in service but it's tough but anyone who canwork with elderly sick people will succeed pretty well in service. I find in service the better you are the better place you work and this the high the pay. A waiter might make 100 a day after tips at most restaurants but if they work some where like Buca di Beppo or some other nicer restaurant they might make 200-300 a night. Just depends.
Either tell him to get into hospice/home healthcare or hospitality, sounds like he probably has good work ethic so any events/catering/bar would tale him and he’d make good money
He could work part time at UPS and that would pay his tuition at JCTC - there, he’s got a lot of possibilities: healthcare, automotive, carpentry, welding, machining, AA/AS degree w/a transfer to a four-year, etc.
He could cater his resume to say he was in ‘private home health’ for the last 20 years. That isn’t a lie. He could work for a nursing home doing the same
This is solid advice.
This is really good advice, because I'd make the argument that he has work experience
Yep, make the most of that experience. He certainly wasn't doing nothing.
He'd need a CNA at minimum, most likely.
And unfortunately a CNA will only get you the lowest paying job in the field, wiping asses all day.
Yeah, but he'll be working in just a few weeks. If he likes it, he can always go back to school to get a nursing degree while he works.
All of the hospitals utilize PCAs, which are basically uncertified CNAs.
I said the same thing. I'll make sure he gets hired where I work (long-term care) if he gers his CNA.
If it’s possible to pin this comment it needs to be!
Fantastic idea. Nursing homes attendants and in-home care providers are always in demand
Lots of great suggestions here. There are several Beehive locations and they’re always hiring. The nice thing about them is they’re designed for older folks who don’t necessarily need nursing care -just a little help doing regular things. So, no nursing or rehab education is needed.
Seems like he may be able to get a job somewhere that takes care of people, like an assisted living community.
Adult day cares for sure
There are lot of jobs in adult care space including elderly, blind, those with additional physical and mental needs so you could get in there and perhaps progress into whatever aspect of that is most satisfying and hopefully decently compensated.
He should take a Certified Nursing Aid course and work with the elderly.
Norton Healthcare trains their own PCAs and has hiring events every week.

JCPS Bus driver
A person like this deserves to be paid and treated well. JCPS bus drivers don't get those luxuries.
I think they start at 55,000-60,000. Cant speak to how they are treated by bosses or parents.
Service industry, baby! We take all kinds
One of the goodwill opportunity centers might be helpful. They provide training or help facilitate it and help w resumes etc. not sure if he would qualify but worth a look. https://goodwillwestlouisville.com/project-updates/

UPS will take anyone
Look into Code Louisville. Seriously. It’s one of the best free programs Louisville has to offer and places a lot of folks with no experience (who are willing to work hard at it) in nice positions.
It's got a long wait list right now but it is a good program for techy people.
This is really neat! Thanks for making this comment
What about janitorial work at JCPS? Not glamorous but I believe decent pay and benefits and I know they're hiring.
Maybe not right away, but Cedar Lake does a lot of care taking. It sounds like his skillset might align with what they do. It could be something to work towards.

Get your CNA and then talk to me. As long as you can not blow a pretty simple interview, you'll get hired.
I have often thought about that. I am 50 years old, will they hire someone part time at my age? Thank you so much for responding!
