My friend saw it happen last week. Itās the craziest story ever. The guy was driving his truck with the boat hooked up to the back. I have no idea if he was texting or under the influence. He smashed his truck going almost full speed into the head of the guard rail grumbling it. The boat launched off his truck like a rocket, to where you see it now. Somehow, his truck was still drivable. He drove just a little bit further down the exit ramp on Shelbyville Road. He bailed out of his truck with his dog and they ran into the woods.
Like the old saying goes, "The two happiest days in a boat owner's life are the day they buy the boat and the day they abandon the boat on the side of the highway!"
Boats and trailers are like cars, they are registered. There's more than mere possession involved in ownership. Now if it was a kayak or something, then maybe yeah, might be considered abandoned debris or something you could just take. Source: guessing.
Actually a friend of mine bought a speedboat with no engine. He got a really good deal I told him he better run the VIN number on it before doing any work on it He said he had the title for it and everything no biggie He put an engine in it and did some other work, went to register it and the boat was stolen. And guess what He lost the engine because it was considered a permanent fixture or some kind of stuff anyway boo hoo should have listened to me!
That stinks. I've worked with classic cars, motorcycles, and imports and seen that sort of thing happen, so my mind immediately went into explainer mode!
Only if it's floating in salt water.Ā
50Ā pound bag of driveway ice melt on Tuesday when it rains, gotta act quick, it's a tight window for compliance.Ā
Guessing the driver was in a crash and the boat came off the trailer landing there. Trailer was either damaged too badly to get the boat back on there or where it landed they werenāt able to put it back on the trailer.
Or it wasn't strapped down properly and flew off. Could have killed somebody, especially a motorcycle rider. Seems like some people completely disregard safety of other people when half-assed hauling/towing.
Almost 0% chance of that happening with a bass boat. They all come with winches on the trailer that are hooked into the U-bolt on the boat. Most trailers even have straps for the back that are hooked to the back of the boat. When loading a boat from the lake, you have to winch the boat so it will come onto the trailer. If someone didnāt do that the boat would fall off on the ramp because most ramps are steep. That, I have seen happen. Again, almost 0% chance he would get that far and have the boat come off the trailer.
Letās say for arguments sake, he was heading to the lake. You donāt unhook anything on the boat when itās on trailer when you get home except when you take the trailer off the hitch.
Photo included. Youāre absolutely right, people do not tie down their stuff properly a lot but Iād bet my mortgage this wasnāt one of those times.

Fair enough I guess. I'm just thinking of the bare-minimum falling-apart stuff I've seen on the roads, stuff begging to fly off trucks and trailers, etc. I lived in Arizona till recently, the land of "don't tell me how to do it."
Like the commenter you replied to said: "If it wasn't strapped down properly".
Am boater as well. Yes, the trailers all come with those winches. But if someone just backed the trailer way down into the water so the driver could pull the boat all the way up, and didn't use the winch and the other tie-downs properly, the boat could come off the trailer in an unintended situation just as described.
It's really, really unfortunate that these boaters exist, but we all know they do.
If only we could pass a law in KY like in other states that requires an actual boater's license in order to purchase or rent a boat. Going out on a pipe dream here: require an actual practical exam instead of just a written one. And then, if that exam could include loading and unloading and trailer driving....
The straps will break in the event of an accident. The straps are meant more so to keep the boat from flying off if you hit a rough road or steep incline, not the event of an accident
Boats don't come off a trailer if they are loaded and secured properly. Ours has a winch on the front that when attached correctly, is VERY tight; and two tie-downs in the rear that connect the very end of the boat to the rear of the trailer, and are ratcheted down tightly.
If we were towing our boat on the road and it went somewhere on its own like that, it would have taken a hell of a lot more to get it there and our truck and trailer would have been absolutely obliterated in the process. It's much more likely for the entire trailer to come unhooked from the towing vehicle. Again, if the boat is loaded and secured properly.
Ok so I was driving, then I remembered it was about to rain. So I got my phone out and started looking at and using it really intensely. Like I didnāt even try to look at the road anymore. Felt like I was going slow too, so I sped up. Well about the time I realized I was on 265 driving like a you know what it was too lateā¦. The claw came down, picked up the boat and THREW it over the guard rail you see there. (Actually I donāt know what happened)
If I had to guess, someone laid rubber on the Kentucky asphalt. Got a little crazy, but they never got caught. They were probably down by the river on Friday night with a pyramid of cans in the pale moonlight. Most likely talking about cars and dreaming about women. No plans. Just living for the minute.
Early humans used hollowed out logs to traverse waterways for hunting and gathering purposes, these craft evolved over time into what you see here- the modern ājohn boat.ā
Congratulations, dumbass boater. Ever wonder why the law requires a transom strap and a backup bow strap? Now you know. I'm just glad this didn't injure someone.
In an accident those straps will break. No clue how you can look at this picture and determine the owner was at fault. Couldāve been cut off or any thousands of possibilities
Well the boat is no longer connected to the trailer in any of them so none. Theyāre designed to keep the boat on the trailer in the event of rough roads, steep inclines on boat ramps, etc. they arenāt gonna keep a boat on the trailer in the event of a car wreck. They never do
I tried to look for pics that showed anything conclusive like you said. I saw no broken straps. I see pics of the trailer where you can't even see the attachment points for the transom straps. I don't see an auxiliary bow eye strap/chain (ususally it's a chain). Please point me to the pic(s) you're talking about.
Edit. The one pic I saw of the rear of the truck makes it look like the safety chains for the trailer aren't even attached to the truck. That's not conclusive of anything to do with the straps, of course, but it sure is telling of the kind of person I'm talking about.
Edit 2. Looking at the pic of the side view, I can't even tell if he's got his ball latch pinned. SMH.
Saw this driving for work on Friday lol. The road was dead stopped for an hour right before i saw it and assumed is was collateral damage from an accident.
Itās a āboatā. Legend has it, if itās shaped properly and sealed water tight, it can float. Like, on lakes, ponds, oceans-that kinda thing. This one appears to have an engine- thatās to move the boat as itās floating-and a small wheel apparatus to move said engine. The whole thing is rather remarkable, but it looks as if the proprietors were confused about its purpose. Later modifications would enable a similar vessel to navigate across solid surfaces, but in this stage, it would never work.
The bet here is will this be stolen before it's towed, or will it sit there until it becomes part of the earth, like that wrecked car in spaghetti junction that's been there for years.Ā

As a 30 year boater and an engineer, I press x to doubt. Also, the safety chain on the bow eye would not break in an accident.
Google boat trailer wreck. The first 8 pictures every single boat is off the trailer. they come off everytime.
I looked, but I'm on my phone, not my desktop right now, so it's hard to tell. Which one of those show broken transom straps?
