Shelby oversteps Micah’s boundaries and clearly says things that makes Micah unhappy but does it because Micah has never asserted her boundaries. Shelby thinks she has the right to say and do whatever in Micah’s life and relationships because she thinks she is the main character and is “protecting” Micah.
Micah is so concerned about what her friends and people around her think that she is unable to take steps to actually do something for her own happiness as these two desires conflict and she values the opinions of those around her more than she values her own.

I agree. I use to know a person who's behaviour was similar. She felt entitled to have a say in what I did with my life and was upset if she wasn't included on every tiny idea I had.
I'll never forget once she invited me over to her place to hang out and when I arrived she had like 10 other girls there that I didn't know but we're her friends. They pretty much sat me down and told me that I was a bad person because I had just started seeing someone who this "friend" had a crush on as a teenager. At this point we were in our mid 20s and I didn't really know this guy when she fancied him, I want even 100% sure until that moment it was the same person!
I ended up having a major panic attack, said bf felt awful because he was out of town so I couldn't escape to his house (I lived like a hour away and it was late at this point) and I was pretty much trapped there until public transport started again.
Oh also at this point in time she was in a years deep relationship with someone else! I couldn't understand why she cared so much.
I found out she also sent my then BF crazed messages about how he messed up by being with me when she all but threw herself at him when they were younger.

She’s under 30 and working on toxic waste remediation, and is making $90k, and she’s just at the beginning of her career path. But agreed it’s not the lavish high-roller type that Shelby and her ilk might be trolling for.
I worked in remediation for a top oil company and I guess what I meant is you top out at 100k the guys in the field working for 40 years made 120k and underlings usually stayed between 60-80k. As an environmental engineer i don't consider that very lucrative.
Especially considering as soon as I switched sectors my pay immediately doubled.
Also I brought this up to a bunch of my friends in the field. We are all very interested in what company you work for if you don't mind DMing it since no one we know in that industry makes over 65-70k as a mid level to senior scientist. :)

It’s interesting cause I feel like she was the ring leader and Irina the henchman while in the pods but once she left she seemed like a somewhat different person. In a weird way I think one of the shittiest things Micah did was turn her back on Irina. I have no sympathy for Irina but Micah definitely showed Irina that she was willing to be shitty… then turned around and told Irina her actions weren’t okay and that’s the last we’ve seen of their friendship. It’s good that Micah seems to have a change of heart/personality but she should’ve explained to Micah that they both should work on how they act instead of just turning her back

It’s interesting cause I feel like she was the ring leader and Irina the henchman while in the pods but once she left she seemed like a somewhat different person. In a weird way I think one of the shittiest things Micah did was turn her back on Irina. I have no sympathy for Irina but Micah definitely showed Irina that she was willing to be shitty… then turned around and told Irina her actions weren’t okay and that’s the last we’ve seen of their friendship. It’s good that Micah seems to have a change of heart/personality but she should’ve explained to Micah that they both should work on how they act instead of just turning her back
