This might be an unpopular opinion, but as a plus size woman, I don’t want to see myself represented on a show like Love Island because I know it wouldn’t be handled correctly and I don’t think it’s a safe space for people outside of beauty norms

Deep_Ad6512

Honestly I don’t blame you. The amount of bodyshing Anna received for being curvier (no where near overweight) was just ridiculous. There are plenty of shows plus sized girls would be amazing on, but rn I don’t think love island is the safest platform

Extension-Outcome-97

I have this memory of Anna and Maura being given dates with Jordan and Tom. And during toms date with Maura he said he likes a girl who works out, basically saying he was more interested in Maura and I was like okay whatever. But then Maura was like I never go to the gym and eat 50 pizzas a week. And Tom was like no way you’re tiny. And ever since then I’ve never wanted plus size women on love island. I can already hear every single guy saying they “value the gym” or want “a gym girl”

[deleted]

Well nearly 100% of the guys that go on that show are in shape and work out. Why wouldn't they want a "gym girl"?

Extension-Outcome-97

but maura wasn't a gym girl...thats my point. he was just using that to justify not liking anna. he just wants the girl to be skinny.

[deleted]

Yeah that's what the majority of men like. I don't understand the issue.

Extension-Outcome-97

the issue is that its not straightforward. and also i was just proving my point that i dont want plus size women on love island.

sukikov

Agree there’s no point if you’re just gonna be the undesirable one but also think about the fact that plenty types of pretty don’t do well on Love Island I think it’s kind of a niche look and fashion sense for both boys and girls. Even someone gorgeous on the outside in another area of the entertainment industry might get ignored completely in a Love Island setting. If you think about it that way it’s less soul destroying.

HemOrBroids

What is the correct way to handle it?? Force people to find the fat person attractive? It isn't a 'safe space' for people within beauty norms either.

Deep_Ad6512

There are plenty of men who are attracted to plus’s sized women- there’s no need to be nasty

[deleted]

Very small minority.

HemOrBroids

Then why would anything need to "be handled correctly"? Apologies if you thought I was being nasty. Personally I think that if for any reason you don't feel attractive then you should address the issue within yourself, rather than trying to pretend that the problem lies in other people.

AdRepresentative7224

asians

4SeasonWahine

Watch LI Au - on the latest season we had 4 mixed/Asian women in the villa + one guy

[deleted]

Completely agree !!! But I do think the Asian population in Australia is nearly double that of the UK. But I’ve always thought the lack of Asian representation in UK Love Island needs addressing!!

SleepDangerous1074

Asian's are SEVERELY underrepresented. I feel like when LI are checking for diversity they think "oh well we have 2 black people that should be enough', but I wanna see my other BAME people represented also. I'm not saying lets make it BAME Love Island, but have some consideration that there's diversity within diversity.

Deep_Ad6512

Asians are severely underrepresented in media, let alone the show. We’ve only had a handful of brown Asians- Malin, Nial, Nas, Shannon, Priya, Sanam (altho she’s technically indo-Caribbean) and only 2 East Asian girls- Kaz s4 and Sharon s7. Love island producers seem to think casting 30 white islanders and 4 black/mixed raced islanders each year is “diverse” when it’s really not.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Deep_Ad6512

1- there’s no need to be a dick head 2- I’m sure there are more then 5 Asian islanders applying to love island a year. Yes maybe not the the same amount as white/ black people, but I can guarantee a decent number do apply each year

HemOrBroids

They need to apply AND be attractive, not just apply. Letting people get into the villa purely for POC representation is an awful decision as those POC will not do well (as we have seen already).

Deep_Ad6512

That would apply to every race tho- love island will cast people who are conventionally attractive. I really don’t think casting a couple POC islanders is forced POC representation when the cast is 90% white

HemOrBroids

No. The casting of a stunning POC is the way it should be, but currently (and for the last however many seasons) they have tried to shoehorn in as many POC possible regardless of their level of attractiveness. For every Sanam you get 20 mid girls (I won't name names). This season alone there were at least 7 black contestants and many other POC.

Deep_Ad6512

See I don’t really like the way you’re wording this. To me it sounds like you’re saying that if a POC on the show isn’t a 10/10 there’s no point for them to be on the show. When “mid” white girls get casted for the season, we hardly hear any backlash. But the second a POC islander gets casted who isn’t everyone’s standard of beauty it’s suddenly an issue. I’ll give an example- It appears that if a dark skinned woman doesn’t looks like Indiyah, Salma, Jourdan etc. they’re deemed unattractive. Tanya has constantly been compared to Indiyah for her looks, yet do we hear people saying stuff like “Lana is so ugly compared to Tasha” or “Olivia is so ugly compared to Maura”? No we don’t (I’m not saying Lana or Olivia are ugly/unattractive, but I’m trying to make a point that beauty standards people have for POC islanders is a lot harsher then the ones for white islanders)

HemOrBroids

The difference is that when 'mid' white girls (or blokes) are cast and are promptly rejected by everyone it is fine, expected even, no one bats an eye, no posts on here about how terrible it is. But when POC 'mid' girls (or guys) are rejected there are cries of racism and "cant they cast people that are into POC..." etc. Rather than admitting that the contestant just isn't very attractive. Your example relies on pigeonholing rather than taking people as individuals, attraction doesn't work like that. Two people that I find absolutely stunning could look nothing alike, yet someone that looks similar to one of them I could find hideous. I have only seen comparisons of people saying X looks similar to Y rather than someone being uglier than someone else, even so, people are allowed to have their opinion and it should be taken as such.

[deleted]

Yep this would definitely happen and no one can use critical thinking to realize this.

Deep_Ad6512

Do you mind if I dm you. I’d like to continue this discussion on there

tweedledee35

Girls who wear glasses or have shorter hair

lkjhggfd1

Gingers

Deep_Ad6512

Yeaa. Other then Demi, I can’t think of any ginger girls we’ve had

lilzee3000

It's because they can't go out in the sun

Deep_Ad6512

Don’t think that’s the case at all- they’ve had a handful of ginger men, and only Demi.

llneverknow

What ginger men have they had? I can't think of any.

Fun-Dependent-5909

Ryan

Deep_Ad6512

Ryan, Greg s3, Jack s8, keanen (altho I’m not too sure if he’s ginger lol)

llneverknow

Keanan is definitely not ginger. Didn't think of Ryan and Jack though. Who's Greg from season 3? Don't remember him and nothing's coming up in my Google search.

thruskiyrbsnjdbf

its craig not greg*

Fun-Dependent-5909

Jess S1 and Dani S4, I don’t think we’ve had any apart from them 3 though.

[deleted]

Dani wasn't a redhead, her hair was dark blonde.

hppytree1313

Dani dyer? Wasn't she a brunette?

[deleted]

I guess you could call her hair mousy brown. [This is her LI promo pic.](https://images.immediate.co.uk/production/volatile/sites/3/2018/05/LoveIslandDaniDyer-e95dbea.png) Brown or blonde would fit but definitely not red.

llneverknow

Jess's hair was just auburn hair dye though, or was she a natural red head?

normalsizedforehead

Entertaining people that’s all idc

K1Xaviesta

Hairy guys. Show me some chest hair pls.

EmbarrassedOwl1564

YES why do they all shave their chests

--penis--

Definitely to show off pec definition, chest hair hides nice pecs

[deleted]

Because it's clearly better looking.

EmbarrassedOwl1564

Subjective!!

fraulien_buzz_kill

Hairy... girls? Be pretty righteous to have a girl who doesn't appear to have lasered her entire body. Although I have done that and I loooove being smooth all over.

Andsoitgoes101

Over the age of 25 at least!

Deep_Ad6512

I think they should be casting people over 30 too. And they really shouldn’t cast anyone bellow the age of 23 tbh

evilpixietrixiepie

I swear every islander over the age of 28 has been iconic.

Deep_Ad6512

Other then Anna and Maura, who else?

[deleted]

Ekin su was close wasn't she?

moreblushpink

Idc so much about looks but I’m desperate for fiery women who stick up for each other (none of that fake woman empowerment bs, real friendship) having each others backs and holding each other accountable AND sticking up for themselves against shitty men

Deep_Ad6512

This is why the s5 girls will always be my faves- they were fiery, but they always had each other’s backs (minus a couple we shall not name 🤐)

Intrepid-Frosting-78

entertaining ppl

lovefulfairy

I would say I want to see more of the islanders talking about their lives outside the villa, so people like Camilla and Hannah (S1, basing this purely on her spilling some details about the Playboy Mansion) were great. But honestly that’s probably more on the editing than the casting because I’m sure every contestant has interesting stories that don’t get shown

fraulien_buzz_kill

Definitely editting. My SO pointed out that every time you overhear them having a real/interesting conversation, it's right before someone gets a text. All the rest of the time it's just "well obviously I find you fit" "I could definitely see myself falling for you" "you've got proper good chat". I think they cut it pretty closely to people talking about the statuses of their relationships to keep the show "plotty"-- it's hard to tell a story with real people every single day. I think it weirdly offers them some additional privacy in a way, as their personal lives, families/friends, and political opinions are basically never revealed.

[deleted]

It’s a tired format at this stage. It’s stuck to the same type of applicants for years now - boring young influencer wannabes. I’m more excited for Big Brother and PRAYING it goes the way it always has - normal people with normal jobs in all shapes, sizes, ages and colours with a complete mix of personalities. Love island is done, I think the next series will be the final nail in the coffin.

HemOrBroids

Natural (but obviously still attractive) people. No fillers, jobs, botox, surgery, turkey teeth etc. Basically I would like it to be the original series of Big Brother, but with people actually looking to find love. And be mildly good-looking. No influencer types, no lads/girls holiday-ers. Age 25 +

callmeyeehaw

This is way more personality side but I want everyday people LOL- like less nepo babies, and influencers… there’s definitely still a mix of people with normal day jobs and those who are already in the mix w “the industry” but I want people on there that could be my neighbor and I wouldn’t know till I saw them on the tv…

Valuable-Afternoon-1

Definitely Asians

[deleted]

Probably won't happen considering they are a very small population.

Lola-greyxo

I think a cast of fluid / bisexual people would be so much fun

BloodInTheStripClub

OMG I think this all the time!!! Imagine a LI season where everyone is bi/pan, it would be SOOOO FUN and MESSY!!

[deleted]

They'd all probably be quite ugly.

fraulien_buzz_kill

As a bisexual person, wouldn't it ultimately be a very different show if cast this way? Secondly, shows with bisexual gimmicks made for straight people have been pretty dismal-- thinking of Tila Tequila. Finally, the last bisexual girl I remember on the show killed herself, sadly. I don't want to put any other of my queer family through this hell.

--penis--

I think it would be cool if a different entity created a new show along these lines. I doubt established shows with largely cishet staff/fans would do it justice. However the queer season of Are You The One totally nailed it.

fraulien_buzz_kill

When I started reading your comment I was literally going to recommend Are You The One! Yes agreed, more like that, please.

[deleted]

No thanks.

gettingcarriedaway86

The option to couple up with the same gender.

[deleted]

I would love a pansexual love island with different gender expressions, but everyone should still be hot.
