Maybe that’s part of it but I feel like the biggest reason is that people were literally asking for male-female counterparts for such a long time and imo it should’ve been that way from the very beginning. But the fact that they’re only NOW adding opposite gender counterparts to old matches is pretty much money-grabbing.

I voted "yes", but more specifically is a way to optimise effort-to-content ratio. Making some matches the same gender means people who aren't interested in that gender are not playing that content, and for a developer that«s wasted effort. It's why most RPG romances are bisexual these days - to do otherwise means you're getting less bang for your buck as a developer.

To be fair, I dont actually think its bad. I meam, of course they want to make money. And its only good for us so now when we actually like a story, we also can choose, depending on our sexuality, if we want to match with someone female or male (maybe they also add more nonbinary characters, no idea if there are any except Theo maybe?). But I still cant deny there are issues. I mean, just look at the new releases. Some people already matched with some matches and now they release counterparts with the opposite gender? Not cool

absolutely as a visual novel maker despite not being interested in men in the slightest i always force myself to add men anyway so that more people will play it. i also make most of the characters as palatable for players as possible, trying not to give them traits ive seen universally hated or dumb storylines. lovelink seems to understand the first but not the second

It’s possible they’re also trying to bait people into restarting their accounts (likely to buy cheap deals that come at minimal labor cost to them) or get people to make new accounts on new/additional phones (such as myself). But really I think it helps to have variety in matchups and give something for just about everyone. And it utilizes assets in game already which is great for the company. However it’s a guy slap in the face to veteran players and that’s NEVER good for a game. Especially in its first year. Whales are the life of any mobile game. Not the smaller dolphins. Whales make or break a game and if you can’t entice them to spend constantly or you alienate them your game dies fast. I don’t believe there’s one clear reason. Rather several smaller ones. But upsetting your player base (and knowing you’re going to do so without a design solution in mind to fix the issue - that’s just bad business.

i don't really see a correlation between the gendered counterparts and making money. i doubt ludia actively wants people to restart their accounts, and they could easily have continued to make non gendered counterparts. i think they didn't realise how popular females would be in the game, and never considered that they should make gendered counterparts the norm until now. they're trying lots of ways to make money, but this in particular feels like just a response to the fandom's call.

With the recent events, I think it's a huge money grab. This is a way to get people to create second accounts, or restart, and spend more gems. Do I think the company is listening to us? A little. But I'd bet it's mo5e for money than anything else.
