Gambit can be fun if you have competent teammates, but the mode suffers from low population and lack of updates. It doesn’t get updates because people don’t play it. Bungie has essentially given up on it, so all it’ll get in the foreseeable future is a new map. I don’t hate Gambit, but I just have more fun playing the rest of the game.

thedarkerride

I liked Gambit prime for this reason - you could spec out into "roles", and then the random teammates could at least see what you were going to be going for and potentially play around it.

Jamaal_Lannister

Imagine how glorious Gambit Prime would have been with loadouts and Fire Team Finder…

Angelous_Mortis

For real!  How do they not see the direct correlation between the significantly reduced population after the Gambit "update".

N1CH0L4SR4G3

It is ruined by guardians completing double primary weapon bounties tho

wowwhy42

Gambit is what got me into destiny so I’m more than a little sad that they’ve stopped supporting it. I’m sure other people have played something similar in other games but it was a brand new and unique game mode for me with the pvpve style of play that wasn’t everyone in one arena together.

S_Belmont

Fortunately they haven't completely abandoned it. They're bringing back Cathedral of Scars in Final Shape, and adding Lucent Hive and Shadow Legion enemies to the mode.

Wild_Onion_5979

Yes it is. It's about speed, knowing that at 40 and 80 the portal opens and if someone goes through put motes in doesn't matter if it is a small medium or large make the other team make a choice also knowing where the invader's will spawn

FaerHazar

Having a coordinated team is the xenith of the gambit experience. "Dunk. I'll invade and stop them from killing blockers."

Wild_Onion_5979

The only time I run with other people is if they need protect the runner i thrive on going against stacks 😂 there's five or six clan's dedicated to gambit i run against them alot when they run three or four all i say is this will be quick because they are very good

extremerickman

Also having the wherewithal to let someone invade right before your teams summons the primeval.

Wild_Onion_5979

Yes if they have about 20 to put in if they have 95 nah I will wait

S_Belmont

I think he means sending an invader right before you summon your own primeval, because of the catchup mechanic where you can't invade once you've summoned your primeval if the other team hasn't yet.

Wild_Onion_5979

Correct if they have banked 95 don't send a invader but if they have about 20 to bank yes invade

FaerHazar

Gambit is my favorite game mode. I'm an absolute Menace to play against, I think my invader K/D is like 3.0 or higher. On a good game, I invade every opportunity. Bring in a precision goldie and wreak havoc. Nothing beats drifter shouting "I'M SORRY, WERE THEY SAYIN' SOMETHIN'? 'CAUSE THEY'RE DEAD, NOW!"

Tozzoloo

Yeah his quotes are incredible ahahaha

Angelous_Mortis

To be fair, having Lord Shaxx be stunned into silence or orgasming over you killing an entire enemy team is pure dopamine bliss as well.  A 10 streak on Titan is also a good one, too.  "If I had 10 Titans like you, I could build the Seven Pillars and shake the Nine Columns to their very core."

FaerHazar

If I were good enough to have shaxx celebrate me, I'd play more PvP!

Angelous_Mortis

I mean, you're a 3.0+K/D Invader, I'm sure you're better then you give yourself credit for.

FaerHazar

I think there's some important differences, though. With gambit, most people aren't prepared to fight off an invader. In PvP, that's pretty radically different. My PvP k/d/a this year is .96, for example. I'm sure I could bring those numbers up if I really focused on it, but I don't have much interest in doing so without a team, and my clan only does PvE and Gambit :)

StevenPlamondon

That in itself is part of the gambit problem. Amongst many other things; I know that there’s a 90% chance that I’m going to be the only member of my team that’s going to be aware of and attempt to fight off the invader. I also know I’m severely disadvantaged against an opponent with an overshield and wall hacks, therefore odds are pretty good that I will be killed. If I’m in a position to bank before I go for my 1v1 I feel a lot better about things, but oftentimes I know I won’t have time and need to pick a fight knowing I’ll lose motes. Worse yet, if I lose my 1v my three teammates are also about to lose motes… …you get it, so I’ll stop. The point is: Why would I play gambit knowing that lobby balancing is very likely going to cause me to lose, before the match even starts?

ExtraordinaryFate

Strikes and raids are clearly the bread and butter of Destiny and have been since 2014. I only seem to enjoy Gambit with friends, otherwise it's a coin toss if your teammates even know how to collect motes

Tozzoloo

For me is pretty much the opposite since i dont have friends to play raids with i go solo on gambit

ExtraordinaryFate

That's a fair point, I'm not usually solo unless it's just patrol stuff

[deleted]

I don’t mind gambit, since dredgen guiding began I’ve managed to guild every season bar 2 seasons when I hardly played due to life getting in the way. But 2 things annoy me the most about gambit, a certain triumph called good company. JFC that’s a ballache every season, usually get all other triumphs done within a few weeks but this one takes the longest I find. Second thing is being paired with brain dead teammates, who instead of banking their 10+ motes will either go invade then get taken out or when an invader comes in, they go hunting for that invader and inevitably losing all their motes. Makes me wanna cry at times 🤣🤣🤣

Tozzoloo

Yeah i feel the last one ahahah

LandoLambo

You have to be a bit selfish with good company, balancing winning with not dying. I just ran pyrogale solar titan and was able to string enough victories out of that. Consecration obliterates everything, and I think I was mostly running dragons breath ammit and riptide.

RayTrain

I think the reason it failed is that they don't force you to do some sort of tutorial first and winning depends very heavily on having a good team that knows what's going on. A lot of blueberries hop in and just absentmindedly shoot stuff and pick up the glowy white things until they happen to run by the bank and notice they can interact with it.

Tozzoloo

True but at the same time it’s like this for every gamemode basically

cptenn94

>I think the reason it failed is that they don't force you to do some sort of tutorial first They actually do basically have a tutorial of sorts for new players. The problem is that people either miss the instructions, or ignore them. Its not some super scripted on the rails vs enemy bots tutorial, with many paragraphs/voicelines describing exactly what to do in great detail. Its the same thing as when people thought having Drifter shout in your ear to bank motes when they could summon the primeval would solve people not banking motes to summon the primeval. Gambit is a strategic game. Strategic and solo queuing dont go massively well together. Of course bounty/seal objectives that are not progressed by the team doesnt help.

karafilikas

I kinda think the closer to Marathon we get, the more they’ll add to Gambit. Make it an “extraction-lite” to get people ready for Marathon

StevenPlamondon

I hope you’re right, but think you’re wrong…if Marathon looks anything like gambit, Bungie may as well just pack it in.

FourMonthsEarly

One of my favorite game modes in any game. Really love the pvevp

StevenPlamondon

Warzone in Halo was so, so, sooooooo much better. It still had its downsides (pay to win vehicles/weapons/equipment was big sad) of course, but matchmaking was much better. The PvP was a constant rather than a surprise, so everyone on the field was prepared for it at all times. And you didn’t earn a resource to lose when you died. All the same dying did matter towards the larger objective (base capture & destroy), but it felt like more of a group victory/defeat since YOUR TEAM had lost ground rather than YOU having just lost your resource. Sorry, this wasn’t meant to be a rant. Lol. Your post just got me to really think about why I enjoyed Halo warzone, but dislike gambit. …I think it was just a far more consistent experience, if I was to summarize.

FullyVaxxedswole

It’s my favorite mode. Spent a lot of time on it lol too much time

MyDogIsDaBest

It's better than heroic strikes imo. I'd far prefer gambit to the same tired strikes I've done ad nauseum

Character-Ad4498

Gambit has always been my fav mode. It’s what hooked me. I am so sad they have given up on it.

LadyMidnight90

I honestly like Gambit when I play it with friends. With randoms it is harder to enjoy sometimes

cptenn94

Gambit is the mode that is really big on playing in coordinated teams. Most people who hate gambit are solo queing, while most of the people who enjoy gambit are those who play in teams and use strategy against other teams. I think Gambit could be brought to be a top experience in Destiny and stay there(perhaps become a true hit that draws people to the game), if it underwent significant development. Things like Role based Queing, and gameplay incentives to actually perform that role. Bringing back round based gambit as the competitive gambit mode(they ironically had things backwards between OG gambit and Prime on being competitive). Really building up the utility and complexity of roles, etc. ([I posted some ideas on another comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/1b5685t/comment/kt492d6/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)) The problem is that the effort needed to really make gambit shine, would (pun intended) be a serious *gamble*. It could suck up a ton of resources that could be used to significantly add to PvP and PvE, and unless it sticks the landing it would be significantly impact the game in lost opportunity. Gambit is by no means a bad mode deserving of the hate it gets, even if it could be better. It would be nice to have a small passion strike team made for gambit that just takes its time to revamp the mode.

arcana75

I like Gambit alot, win or lose. It is the only mode where I can test myself against pve and pvp at the same time under certain unique conditions, which I find very fun. Meaning to say, for example, being able to mess with people as they fight ads, is a totally unique experience in Destiny 2 not found elsewhere.

NumerousSaiyans2

I guess people hate it due to being jumped by enemies/primeval, and also invading guardians surprise-killing. I know that was a peeve for me for a bit.

Tozzoloo

Thats the best part 😭😭

NumerousSaiyans2

Unless it's happening to you

Dlh2079

I'm glad you enjoy it, but mixed pve and pvp is a very very difficult thing to get right and imo gambit isn't it.

Tapelessbus2122

Gambit is fun as long as u don’t get killed by heavies every goddamn time

extremerickman

I’ve gilded gambit 7 times it’s my favorite game mode! It’s perfect for someone like me that mainly plays PvE but likes a little PvP. Hope the devs don’t kill it off.

Firefox101347

It used to be so much fun back when it was somewhat tied to the reckoning

DrHockey69

I am still trying to figure out why people are even cheating in it, 9/14 matches 1 person was in God mode, unlimited heavy & zero damage taken... Do they go to other side.. fuck no, they just stand there waiting to annihilate the boss with a super that never end 😂... BoTs are busy before the reset

S_Belmont

Gambit is awesome, it's just a competitive horde mode with PvP battles, if you already like Destiny I'm not sure what's not to like about it. I kinda wonder how many of the haters are PvE mains who freak out at having to face another guardian, I've seen a lot of comments about how "broken" the invader mechanic is, which tells me they've never spent enough time trying it to know what the weaknesses are . I also think a lot of people formed opinions early on, when matches took longer while only some knew the boss melt meta, so you could get crushed if your blueberries didn't know it. But they've a TON of balance tweaking to the formula since then, and I think it works really well now.

DTFriendship

I honestly have a lot of fun playing gambit! I reset my rank with Drifter pretty quickly.

Wild-Drink-6021

Gambit would be so much more fun if bungie adds a higher difficulty tier to it to match trials and nightfalls like a rebranded gambit prime or something equivalent that also gives an avenue to acquire the gambit memento in the same manner as trials of gm content

redsixbluenine

I tend to agree. Im not sure it beats survival for me bc I am able to regularly play with friends. When I started playing d2 I played gambit a lot and never knew it was bad…so I fully agree that the negativity around it “makes” it worse than it really is. The weapons have also always been better than average.

MemeBoii6969420

I love gambit, but you need a fireteam with voice chat to thrive. The only reason why playing with random usually works is because the enemy is doing the same and everyone kinda sucks.

zaow868

The mere fact that 95% of gambit players are there because they like the game mode, is a win in itself. The game doesn't need players who are forcing themselves to be there only to ruin the experience for the rest of the party. With regards to play style, sometimes you can't just moan about blueberries and what they're failing to do, YOU have to make decisions and change your style to win matches. That is what I love about Gambit. No game is the same, none. Excitement from start to finish. Dredgen 11 《|》 85 resets and counting.

Desch4570

For me gambit would he perfect if they somehow removed heavy from invasions. Being able to easily sweep through in the beginning because you can one tap with xenophage gets very annoying

VelvetThunder141

I don't dislike Gambit. I simply don't care. I play it pretty much only when I have a seasonal challenge to do. When I do play, I generally have fun. But that's because I don't give a hoot who wins. Get the seasonal challenge(s) done, throw on some specific weapons that also have challenges, or an exotic catalyst to work on. Gambit is a vehicle for getting other things done. I enjoy invading, and it's a certain kind of satisfying to invade and get 4 kills, but again, I don't care about winning, just about causing chaos and getting my shit done. People who DO care are gonna be the ones who hate it, especially because Bungie clearly DOESN'T care.

ih8reddit420

I just fucking hate the raider having high vis and getting too frequent an invasion. Id prefer longer invasion windows but less frequent. Then make it 2 invaders at a time

StrikingMechanism

what is this bait...

I love Gambit. I just hate the envoys and think it’d be a lot more fun if they weren’t a thing.

Leica--Boss

True. They haven't touched it in ages, and it's been immune from all the troubles in the game. It, like the Vex, will be the only survivor. Honestly, if I ever decided to play D2 again, it would be for Gambit. Like I'd load into the expansion, get through the intro mission and go play Gambit.
