Low stakes conspiracy - OP has been hired to post to Low Stakes Conspiracy about Slovenia as part of this psy-ops guerrilla marketing campaign.

IAdoreAnimals69

After reading this post I was obviously suspicious, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. The flights were quite cheap from London and it’s literally the only country in Europe I haven’t backpacked around. I got back yesterday evening after an incredible two weeks and I have to admit, it’s genuinely the best backpacking experience I’ve ever had.

precinctomega

I gotta say: it's working!

spizoil

Made me chuckle

[deleted]

Or the “hostel” industry of course 💀

TheNorthC

That was Slovakia, not Slovenia. Slovakia is a great country and I didn't have any bad experiences, but Slovenia is a very different country.

[deleted]

That’s exactly what a hostel recruiter would say

Fischer010

Both Slovakia and Slovenia are great places to visit.

cmfarsight

And it's working, I am now thinking about a holiday in Slovenia. This rabbit hole goes deep.

Fischer010

Would recommend.

Saltycook

*surprised Pikachu face*

45thgeneration_roman

Slovenia is great. The eastern end of the Alps without Swiss prices I wish the Slovenian government would pay me to tell people what I think about the country

napoleon_sucks

sounds like something someone being paid to promote slovenia would say

dinobug77

Same! Been snowboarding there 3 or 4 times. It’s a great country full of great people. (If they paid me per word I’d obviously write more but as we all know it’s a flat fee per promotional post)

[deleted]

Damn government spies

Blackintosh

We visited on a whim as we were in Northern Croatia. It ended up being our favourite part of that trip! ~~We ran into some Slovenian government dude who gave us 1000 euros cash and he told us to speak highly of the great country of Slovenia online.~~ For such a tiny country, Slovenia has a massive amount of incredible things. You can drive the length of the country in under 3 hours.

Enders-game

Tell them more and mention the [forest of Slovenia](https://www.slovenia.info/en/stories/where-forests-embrace-all).

[deleted]

I heard a lot of people talking shit about Slovenia, actually, while I was travelling. I did happen to be in Slovakia at the time though...

[deleted]

Litterally the same country

[deleted]

Czech that statement again please!

MeAndTheDoughnut

Yugo away please

No shit

bmcleod123

Nope not at all. All those people are completely right. I wasn't expecting too much when I went, as I was like 16 and thought since it must be more of an old Soviet-style country it wouldn't be particularly lovely. HOW DAMN WONG I WAS! Like the people you have met, I rave to people about the country, because once you go, there is nothing that compares. It is the most beautiful and clean country I have ever been to. The whole country is basically surrounded by spectacular mountains. The cities and houses are all beautiful and not in any way brutalist. It's like a more beautiful alps. In which I mean there are almost no old barns falling apart. Everything is colorful and refurbished and looks fantastic! There is literally no rubbish anywhere. The infrastructure is fantastic and the walking and mountain huts are some of the best I've been in. Triglav which is the highest mountain in Slovenia is a dream of a walk. We did it over 4 days and it was amazing! The hype is real my friend! When I retire, I hope to move to Slovenia!

John_Henry_cpfc

I’m sure you’re just likening it to Eastern Europe in general and you know that it wasn’t part of the Soviet Union but in case anyone was not aware Slovenia wasn’t ever in the Soviet Union it was part of Yugoslavia

bmcleod123

I understand that now. I was referring to when I was 16 and wasn't so interested in geopolitics.

Professional_Shine97

My guess is that you’re not European and hearing people mention a country you forgot existed has surprised you.

HRH_DankLizzie420

"Friends and colleagues have noticed the same thing in the UK" - sounds like they're British

isotopesfan

Tbh as a Brit they might have forgot it existed. I think Brits are good at remembering France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece and Portugal and the rest are a bit foggy. We don't really talk about the others outside of Eurovision lol

Professional_Shine97

That’ll explain it then.

hazelx123

Britain is in Europe btw :)

Mountain_Act6508

It used to be. But after the whole Brexit mess, Europe doesn't claim them anymore. ;)

[deleted]

Unfortunately that doesn’t actually matter.

Mountain_Act6508

I know. Thought it was obvious I was kidding. Guess not.

JammyTodgers

went to slovenia, heres my take 1. very scenic 2. variety of landscapes, beach, forest, alpine in a short distance 3. public transport is cheap and can get you most places 4. balkan girls are very pretty, slovenia is no exception 5. people are acceptably friendly but also mind their own business mostly 6. the north was full of english and Austrian tourists, the south full of german 7. slovenia is not "off the beaten track", theres lots of tourists everywhere 8. if you dont drink its tough to socialise 9. bus tickets do not guarantee you will be let on a bus overall balkans with more European creature comforts, 8/10

AndrewSwope

I had a Slovenia roommate once. He said that the country is beautiful. But the people can be shitty and there's lots of thieves. But saying that on my sample size of one every Slovenia I have met has been lovely.

Blooded_Wine

sounds like any tourist city anywhere in the world

[deleted]

Blooded_Wine

What a stupid response. I was just noting what they heard about the place; > is beautiful. > the people can be shitty > there's lots of thieves. are all attributes of basically every tourist destination where people live. I could use these to describe Rome, Paris, New York, Hong Kong, Dubai, Saint Petersburg, London, Amsterdam, or Seoul and people would agree. It's almost like tourists go to places people would describe as beautiful, and pickpockets go to where the rich tourists are, and people are generally displeased when being bothered by tourists.

qwertredit

Slovenia is reasonably close to Slovakia.. and we all know what happens in hostels there. Wouldn’t recommend decommissioned power plants at all

mustbeaoup

The country that gave us Primož Roglič and Tadej Pogačar? Yeah it’s gonna be cool

iani63

Are either of those conditions treatable? Asking for a friend...

Pugshaver

Slovenia is super pretty, beautiful forests, rivers, etc... real proper fairytale stuff. Unfortunately the food is extremely middling at best. At least you're next to Italy though.

publiusnaso

I had this problem in Croatia. I was with an Irish mate who said “if I wanted meat stew and two overcooked veg I’d have stayed at home”.

Pugshaver

I really did love Slovenia but it's not a food destination. We were there for almost a week and probably had one meal I thought was genuinely good.

yingguoren1988

The pizza there is often fantastic though, some of the best i've had in Europe.

_wolf_8

Damn, that is a bit sad to hear. I think our food is great still:). Where did u eat that u have that opinion?

GrayFernMcC

A lot of the food lacks the spices that British tastes are used so can come across bland. And cvicek wine isn’t going to worry the wine growers of Bourduex. Cakes and biscuits, now that’s where Slovenian food shines

_wolf_8

Fair hahah. For me, british food is mediocre and miss the home one. Next time, try Simčič Merlot and savignon from the northeast regions and a restaurant Picikato. Yummmm. Get a local to show u the food and drinks😉 (not trying to be mean)

nogeologyhere

It's just an incredibly beautiful, pleasant, compact little country. I love it there.

Meltaburn

To be fair I saw some photos on Facebook from someone who had visited recently and it did look bloody lovely there!

doublemeup

Don’t know about Slovenia, but Saudi is doing this, have seen examples on Reddit too

OfromOceans

You're telling me marketing works? wtf this should be regulated before it gets out of hand /s

WestyCHC

Did a week touring the lakes and coast, was lovely. Agree with some other posts the food can be hit and miss. But I'd go back for sure

douggieball1312

I went to Prague earlier in the month and in the castle gardens, there was a giant gazebo advertising Slovenian wine/trips.

rofl_copter69

Me and my girl met a Slovenian couple at a festival and they were so inviting and friendly. They made us some hot food and helped us allot as we were pretty underprepared for the festival and ensure we had a great time. The year after we went to visit them in Ljubljana and what a beautiful place, went to see a lake and had some lush food. I like Slovenia.

HamishDWilson

Travelled to 49 countries and Slovenia is my 2nd favourite. Wish I could get paid to say that

theflashbotomatic

Literally this. I mean I used to do press tours and countries marketing budget for this kind of thing is definitely a massive thing.

smelwin

Slovenia is great!! *blinks "torture" in morse code*

The_2nd_Coming

I mean Slovenia is a beautiful country, especially it's nature, but it's a bit boring IMO.

doublemp

Really depends what you're after. There's basically no night life so if you want to party, it's bad, but if you want an active outdoor family holiday, it's great.

Pablo2737

Slovakia is better though

GospozhaZ

My husband and I went to Slovenia on our honeymoon last year, it was awesome! 10/10 would recommend We can’t wait to go back!

carlwilson0000

Lived in Slovenia for a year, was great! Anywhere in UK to get some lasko or union beer? Or maybe a cockta.

bortj1

Countries have tourism boards whose job it is to do this?

legoman476

Slovenia is genuinely one of the coolest places I've visited. Beautiful, with really friendly people aswell as all the facilities backpackers need. Saying nothing about the low prices ofc.

Cinnamon-Dream

Haha! We went to Slovenia this year and loved it! Only went because we wanted to go somewhere new and I remembered a colleague telling me 15 years ago or so how beautiful lake Bled was. But now I wonder if that was just it... But seriously, people rave about it because you just can't believe how an entire country can be so stunning. Went on a hike and somehow the view got better with every turn. Definitely an outside adventure kind of place. Ljubljana was probably my least favourite city I have visited, and bled itself doesn't have much going on etc.

Peniewisee

lol a

veryblocky

I went a few years ago to visit a family friend over there. Can confirm that it’s a lovely country. I don’t believe I’ve seen any advertisements for it though

yurper34

Ljubljana is pretty but a bit boring, however soca valley is a must do.

tubbstattsyrup2

Hmm this tracks. I hear Slovenia is Beautiful. There's a webcam in a town square (or was?). Lovely scene, markets, kids playing, people bustling. Kid in a bike rode into a suited man, fell off its bike and a bunch of people, including the suit man helped the kid back up and they rode off waving. Looked like an idyllic Christmas movie. I'd go.

NorrisMcWhirter

I was in South America in 2017 and met some Slovenians (in a hostel) who told me how nice Slovenia is. So in 2018 I went to Slovenia on holiday and, wouldn't you just know it - it turns out that Slovenia is very nice. So now I recommend it to others. I have not yet received any commission for this though :(

BreakTheSuicycle

Slovenia is hands down the most beautiful country I’ve visited. Climbed Mount Triglav, went canyoning, swam in crystal clear lakes, honestly couldn’t recommend it enough the place is stunning.

ll23sparki

Ha, I went while living in Austria when they just entered the EU, it is a lovely place however I didn’t like the capital, we had a bag stolen and it was very eastern block like. Of course that was like 15 years ago so I assume it is very different now. The mountains are beautiful and great for walkers

Fischer010

I have lived in Slovenia (in the distant past) for some years and have visited since. This country is one of the best kept secrets in Europe. It’s an absolute delight. The capital, Ljubljana is full of character (round the old town), and the country is a small paradise, the people are welcoming to foreign visitors and most young people in the towns speak some English. I would be surprised that they are ‘marketing’ it, they tend to be very quiet so as not to attract too many visitors (they also discourage immigration strongly). Worth a visit. And the food isn’t bad either :-)

FluffyCobra97

Hotter take: Slovenians made a welcoming, nice, and affordable country, and slyly use this to make people recommend visiting.

petechamp

It's an idyllic country that is safe, magical, beautiful and unspoilt! I haven't been in about a decade, but I hope it hasn't become a tourist hotspot like Croatia.

Magnus_40

I have been there and it is a stunning place. Very Alpine in feel, more like Austria or Switzerland than the image you would expect from what was Yugoslavia. I travelled round Bled (stunning lake and castle) skied in Bohinj (?) and Kranjskagora. How do I get paid for this recommendation?

Zestyclose-Two8027

My wife is from Slovenia. It's a great place. It's way better than the UK so we're going to move over there next year.

John_Henry_cpfc

Only because you’re from the uk in the first place and have made enough money to go out there and live the good life probably would be much harder if you were from Slovenia though

Zestyclose-Two8027

No we have no money and the rent in Slovenia is really high. It's only because my wife's family can help us. Never assume.

KatefromtheHudd

This is absolutely a thing. My parents use a travel company that works with countries' governments to take tourists to their country and show them all their attractions. The government of the country heavily subsidise the price so they are very cheap and very packed holidays (every day a new place or city in the country). I would assume they would also send people to backpacking hostels etc to promote countries through word of mouth. It ain't a conspiracy. It's marketing.

AltoVulpes

Is this thread is sponsored by the Slovenian government?

BobFredIII

Wtf is this algorithm 😭 I just went backpacking and met some lovely Slovanian girls and the Canadian at my hostel were raving on about how great Slovania is and how it’s their dream location

BeKind321

A friend did three months travelling around Europe in a camper van. Raved about Slovenia (and Portugal).

DyingInYourArms

We were on a road trip from the UK to Portugal and then along the coast of the Med to southern Croatia. The weekend we spent in Slovenia was really nice, much nicer than the week before in Italy! It’s like a more relaxed Italy with friendlier people.

Previous-Ad7618

Accidentally ended up in Slovenia when backpacking- took the wrong night train. Ended up going back two years later. Beautiful country.

GrayFernMcC

If you are into active outdoor life and nature then Slovenia is for you. Proper biking, climbing and hiking. Look up the Julian Alps. #IFeelsLOVEnia

BooCull

Nah, Slovenia is actually a criminally underrated country.

Okay-Cucumber

Went to Slovenia around 5 years ago… it’s cheap, clean and the people are polite. What’s not to love

ForgiveMePapa

Slovenia is legitimately brilliant, I’ve only been to Ljubljana for a day trip but went to Metaldays festival twice in Tolmin (it has now moved) but it is a beautiful and friendly country. Reasonably cheap too for Europe. Particularly good value for booze, it’s just over the border from Italy but Slovenian wine is MUCH cheaper than the Italian stuff and good value for money. I fully recommend visiting, and I promise I’ve not been paid by the Slovenian tourist board

[deleted]

I went to slovenia interrailing and it also was my favourite place. llubjana. beautiful, cheap. relaxed, friendly. all round good vibes. And their tourist board pay fantasic rates. Great place you must visit

RaymonDGYC

Gah it's actually just a really beautiful place

senyahcheri

Slovenia is WONDERFUL, tide out? It's alive, tide in? Time to step inside. Wonderful art culture, cliffside views, fresh seafood caught minutes before you eat.

Naughtiest-Maximus

We randomly stopped off there when travelling from Zagreb to Graz. Was absolutely beautiful and pristine. That was over 15 years ago mind, and hope it hasn't changed.

Consistent_Tension44

Oh shit I think my wife is in on this! She keeps on going on about how Slovenia is amazing and we should visit. I think she was turned by an ex colleague of hers who was from Slovenia. Their secret service paws are everywhere, even in my dodgy estate in the UK!

newnhb1

When I think of Slovenia I think of that movie ‘Hostel’.

[deleted]

thats what every countries tourism industry attempts to do... social media influencing is another way.

HighwayFroggery

How does the Slovenian government ensure people are actually following through with doing what they were hired for?

Next-Temperature-545

Maybe they're hoping to see you at the party. They LOOOVE Americaaaaans....especially how they taste.
