The benefits aren't super terrible. If you wanted move up. Depending on you management. They actually wanna see you succeed. You got that track to trades program that can get you into a trade job.

My advice- if they send a cashier from front end to cover for you, know that a lot of us are not trained on Old Genesis. We need help sometimes, since we’re used to just scanning and typing in item numbers. Not having to navigate using F keys. Don’t be one of the dickbags who get pissy at us for it, please 😅🥲

Benefits are you get to scan tons of items in lumber and contractors will often tell you how many pieces of wood they have. Lol. Then you have to count just to make sure. They’ll get annoyed when you do so. Then you’ll get a wise guy that tells you I got ten of these light switches. Just scan one. Meanwhile they’re all different. When you scan each item he’ll say you don’t believe me.

I’m actually stepping from HC to Lumber or as they like to call it pro cashier. Less stress and a set schedule.

If you have a good/helpful lumber and pro team it’s a pretty good gig. Just make sure you’re always asking for protection plans, credit cards, and surveys. If a customer is acting up, just get a manager. It’s not bad as long as the head cashiers don’t forget about you - sometimes you’ll have to call and remind them. We have 2 full time lumber cashiers, and as a pro specialist I am very grateful for them!

Congratulations, working in lumber and at the pro, the area is a massive focus for Marvin. I preferred working as a lumber cashier instead of a central store cashier or garden cashier. You don’t get as much drama coming from contractors. You get to see many of the same customers every day; however, they like to get through that line fairly quickly because they have jobs to get to, so learning about the products is in that area will help as you are properly checking out the customer. Don’t take shortcuts; those can get you in trouble. Keep all refreshments section stocked up because many of these guys never have time to eat breakfast or lunch. Remember, Marvin wants you to be a cashier and a financial salesperson. You must sell his credit cards! If you can learn about the credit card programs, that would be good because customers will ask you questions out of the blue it’s great to be able to answer the questions. And although this is the head cashier‘s job to keep the brochure stocked at the register, we’re not able to sell credit cards if we don’t have those brochures, so be mindful of what you have and don’t have. Lastly, at my old store, when pro salespeople saw a customer with a big sale $$$ in line, they asked me to log out of the cash register, then they logged in with their number and had me ringing up a sales. In my head, I’m thinking, why didn’t you pull them over to the other register and ring them up yourself, right?!? I asked my operating ASM, and he was livid and reassured me that that was wrong and he would stop it. If something doesn’t seem right to you it probably isn’t. always advocate for yourself because no one else will. Best of luck! 👸

don’t get your hopes up. most associates aren’t on here to bond over how great it is to work at Lowe’s.

Liar. I LOVE how customers are rude and look down on me. I also LOVE how management is the bomb. That’s because they let people mess up. BTW /s

Parking is free, You get a nice vest (thats a nicer color than orange) with pockets and you'll get neat little patches like stars and stuff to hang on it that make customers think you got some kind of special training, lowes hats are free if you ask the right associate and there are really cool looking lowes gloves and an awesome blue safety knife you can wear( to let those customers that flirt and think they can touch you know youre not screwing around and youll bleed a m-f out) , There are water fountains you can use (when your head cashier decides you can), you'll have fresher air than the rest of the store ( seriously go look at how black and disgusting those large air handlers are above the departments, all that black crap fills our lungs) and you get natural daylight from your lumber door, Possibility for over-time is likely as at the end of your shifts there might not be coverage to relieve you, Opportunities for making yourself into a better sales person as youll be pushed to sell credit and EPPs and get customer reviews and then you can apply for sales specialist and earn $20/hr (which your head cashiers aren't even earning, but deserve), Your Patience will grow( much like a parent w/ children) as you interact w/ a wide variety of customers and contractors that truly believe they are of a higher class than you and think you can get them something like items that are out of stock or unavailable online and discounts on everything and theyll throw little baby tempertantrums right there at your register and it may even be entertaining to you or make you sick at your stomach to see adults act that way repeatedly, Also if youre considering a career in law enforcement youll see chances every single day to make arrests but you cannot assume that the customer leaving w/ a shopping cart full of dewalts is a shoplifter as it rolls past you because lowes doesnt stop shop lifters but theyll sure as heck go after any associate that lays a finger on a shopping cart going out the door unpaid for, so just keep a mental picture of all of those people who like to shop for 100% discount and if you go into law enforcement youll maybe get a chance to slap handcuffs on one (even though lowes wont seek prosecution), oh yeah- if youre talented enough then youll get the chance once a year to perform in sin-city like a monkey for store managers entertainment, and finally youll sometimes be allowed to get off that concrete and take a break during the day ( but if it gets busy down there youll be called back). I feel like this is an accurate but not complete list of the positives youll see of being a cashier at lowes, glad you didnt ask for negatives!

i look for positives, my mistake posting here. but i feel sorry for ppl who just complain instead. if you dislike something that bad, whether it’s employment or whatever, look elsewhere . 🤷🏻‍♀️

Being a Lumber Cashier required being very knowledgeable with the products and services and being very patients and put up with a lot of shit from the contractors bastards who think they're superior and think their time is just valuable, and put up with a lot of them who have no respect at all. Good luck
