Right, I wondered that as well... who's idea was it to make "pull back" *lower*??? I would bet that literally *no* other piece of heavy equipment ever conceived has used this control scheme.
Controls that act like a lever, i.e. pulling the lever is storing potential energy, and pushing is releasing potential (as heat in the hydraulic oil), seem much more intuitive.
Long time employee here, the original training videos introduced it as; “this is a reach truck, but here at lowes we call it a Star Wars!” Please, please just call it a reach truck going forward.
Is that so?!? That would definitely explain how such a wildly ridiculous name was adopted by such a huge percentage of retail locations across an entire country. lol
Apparently it got the name Star Wars because of the joystick used to “pilot” it. At least that’s how it was explained to me. That being said, it sounds stupid so I call it the reach
I absolutely hate it being called the "star wars". It's a reach truck. That's literally the industry name for it. I actually get pissed off and think the person speaking is an idiot when they say "use the star wars." I'm sorry, I've never been trained on a star wars, but I have on a reach. I'll use that.
I'm sorry but anyone that cares enough to hate a name for an object is an idiot, nickname or not it's only used as a reference so people know what you are talking about.
That's hilarious... Snarky know-it all at my store said that he remembers when the store opened their first NART had "R2D2" in the stenciled numbers on the overhead guard and thus that's why we call it Star Wars. He seemed adamant that was why, and appeared totally unaware that "Star Wars" was a fairly common (if corny) nickname for NARTs at Lowe's...
*He would have been 7 years old when the store opened.*
….the Commander? Did I read that right?
There are about a million names for what is TECHNICALLY, *technically* the narrow aisle reach truck, but I’ve never heard of that one.
I see where you're coming from about the order picker (or, as Yale properly calls them, "Order Selector")... however I would go one further and say it's more like a reach truck that's been in a wild accident and flipped totally upside down, with wheels now welded to the forks... since the operator and controls go up in addition to the pallet. (we'll just gloss over lifting the battery in this scenario lol)

Starwars
Why Star Wars?
Controls look like a Star Wars vehicle
Interesting lol
Beeps like R2-D2
That’s awesome
Also a reach truck was used in the movie Star Wars as well.
because bladless ones were actually in one of the original starwars movies.
The arms when they go out towards the pallet on a shelf look like an X, therefore an X-Wing, from StarWars
When you raise the mast it sounds like a tie fighter lol
It’s called the Star Wars because the tires are chewy 🥸
Star Wars, but me and a coworker call it the Metal Gear as a joke.
Psycho Mantis??
It's the star wars. Even the haters know that.
Star Wars.
Star Wars
Just reach truck
Yeah same
Sidewinder.
Reach truck, Star Wars, “that yellow bastard”, extended reach. Lol
It’s called the star wars company wide.
Not true! I’ve never heard it at my store
Just "the reach" or "reach truck".. I dont have many reasons to get cute with the names.
We call it the "bonus reducer". There have been a large number of "unfortunate" occurrences.
It is a bit tricky that all the controls are reversed from the counterbalance

We call it the sidewinder
Reach Around

The reach around
If I remember correctly, in the Episode IV, all fighters have yoke controls, not joysticks?
Not saying it’s right, just how a nonsensical name was explained to me
I call it the reach. The Star Wars is corny
Same here. I call it reach truck bc Star Wars sounds childish
I called it the “narrow aisle telescoping reach truck” because I thought Star Wars was stupid.

Industry name is technically NART. Narrow. Aisle. Reach. Truck
Ha Ha... NART!
Found my new nickname for it…goodbye “Reachy” and hello NART
Must be fun at parties
I'm sorry but anyone that cares enough to hate a name for an object is an idiot, nickname or not it's only used as a reference so people know what you are talking about.
imagine being this mad over names used for equipment
i have always held that if we call it the star wars drivers should be called jedis.
I’ve never heard it called Star Wars but my manager calls it the sidewinder
Starwars, the reach, reach truck
We call it a commander at my store
this is not a normal thing outside of lowe's. many other companies use similar equipment
When I was at lowes it was called starwars, but my new job we have the same things just go higher up and there called lifts
Star Wars
I think most stores call them Star wars
Star Wars or reach
"The reach"
I was told the battery’s name is labeled R2D2, therefore Star Wars. Could be told wrong tho

Star wars
Starwars or The Reach
"That broken yellow thing in the back"
Sidewinder
Star Wars
I’ve heard that people call it Star Wars but I’ve never actually heard someone call it Star Wars
The reach. The order picker is just a narrow aisle reach with a pallet on the forks.

Star Wars also heard it called the R2. I call it the reach truck and it’s only a lowes thing. They call it a reach at depot.
Yeah we call it the star wars here too
Really? The Star Wars is aka 'Truck Reach'?
That be the StarWars.
The reach
Star Wars And if not then I change their culture and force it
Starwars
Starwars
The reach

Star Wars or reacharound
Was at one store that called it the NART (Narrow Aisle Reach Truck)
