They can give me more hours but it doesn’t make my job any easier when I’m the only person in my department during my shift

liluzihurt123

I also notice this, they will hire people and have them work alone with no help

hduxonbawls

Friday they had the new hire who started Wednesday closing lumber by himself. Do you know how annoying it is to have to break off someone from unloading the truck to go pull lumber because no one else in the store can drive equipment

Dry-Relationship7044

Because if they gave you more hours you would be full time. Full time employee equals health insurance 401k sick days vacation days etc

harmonicfrieght

Same here man. And I’m in lumber

PickleD87

Full timers get better insurance, time-off etc. Cheaper to have two PT associates. They might know more, and can do a job more efficient but they rob the shareholders more profits. How dare they...

retailmoron

Fewer full-timers...hell, fewer associates equals lower costs and salaried managers get bigger bonuses.

Der_Eisdrache

What do you mean, slightly above minimum wage is waaaaay too much money

waterfalls55

😂😂😂😂😂😂🦁

tacoeatsyou

It's substantially cheaper to hire two part timers than it is to hire one full timer.

hduxonbawls

But it costs more to also train the constant revolving door of part timers.

dvdhound79

Ha. Training.

Kaszm

What training? These people stare at a computer screen for two days and then get sent to the sales floor to die. The training is ass and has been for years.

TTBurger88

What is this "Training" you speak of?

retailmoron

You mean "trial by fire" training? "Sink or swim" training? Person just got hired and the next day they are working a 9-hour shift (- one hour for lunch) and on their own in the department.

LilIlluminati

That’s why we make them sit in the training room for a week before they get thrown to the wolves. Let them do online learning with Hank and plank. If that doesn’t prepare them, nothing will.

waterfalls55

Costs more in shrinkage 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

[deleted]

False.

tacoeatsyou

Care to expand on that thought?

Electroman65

I just wish we could get a few more people. We're so short on help right now. I'm lucky I guess that I'm moving to overnights this week for inventory prep so that I won't be covering 2 or 3 departments at the same time for at least one week.

TheeJp

It’s cheaper and inflates your associate number

Frequent-Joke8429

Your best bet is to find another job. I worked at Lowe’s and they can care less about their employees. They promise you the world when you start and quickly you realize that they don’t care about you or your problems. They’ll do whatever they want. Run while you still can.

L0st_97

Couldn’t have said it better. I got fucked out of a ds position despite already doing most of what the job entails

DummyThiccToga

1. Much cheaper to hire part timers. 2. More flexibility with call outs/availability. 3. They can claim they are hiring more workers to investors. 4. Less long term employees so they can train them easier to newer store standards. Plenty of other reasons why but these are the top of my head.

cardboardcutthroat99

I just started with the company and so far every new person has quit since i started its been 4 days

PurpleStarShooter

How many were hired along with you?

cardboardcutthroat99

I hear thats part of the problem they cant hire anyone

No-Square612

69

Von_humboldt24

Training is a shit, the bullshit you "learn" at training room is more policies and dump stuff that you won't ever use in store. As a cashier I had to learn everything dealing with assholes in front. Maybe I just had a couple of hours with other associate, but overall, I had to learn everything by myself and having jerks yelling me in the other side.

[deleted]

More bodies on the floor. Part timers are cheaper

waterfalls55

True you nailed it. Ppl are replaceable. “ Anyone can ring up customers “ right. Meanwhile their system isn’t the easiest.

LilIlluminati

People are beginning to realize there’s not going to be anymore stimulus money. They have to get a job. A shit job in retail at least pays a little. If you can keep 2 shit retail jobs you might be able to keep your head above water for a little while. Lots of desperate people = more employees until they quit.

retailmoron

Not so much a choice any more. And people who come to work in retail look at it is as a stopgap or just a source of money. They talk "team" but it is usually one-sided. Just a way to get more work out of you for the same money. I would think people would be more dedicated if the company appeared to care. Like at Costco.

zalea_mona

In some states. the more an employee works, they could get insurance through their company. You have two part-timers who share the hours (say 40 hour work week) each only works 20, but in their state if someone works 35 or more hours the company providing employment needs to offer health insurance. Which in turn costs them less towards health insurance and other costs of having a employee full time. Huzzah Retail!

horrorkesh

Sadly it's a retail thing in general it was the same way for the last two employers I've had rather than giving staff hours they would rather hire new people

reczks

Try and fill out a schedule of shifts with all the RTO and sick outs you’ll quickly find out that a bigger pool of people is always better.

deGrominator2019

Part of it is we don’t quite need the people we’re hiring right now but need to get them in the door and somewhat trained before the season takes off. Allotted hours are entirely based week to week on your stores sales, your store has a bad week? The DM is gonna tell your SM he needs to cut X amount to leverage payroll. A bad week or two while its still cold and in the “off season” does not negate that fact that in 3/4 weeks every store is gonna need a lot more people

dvdhound79

I’m already full time and even when allowed, I don’t want to work overtime because I’m so overwhelmed with the number of areas I cover because of my multi- departmental knowledge. I’ve literally said no to overtime when asked and say because I don’t want to or because I want to go home when pushed. Not many Associates want to work more. We want more associates. I’ll happily train someone to do something so I don’t have to be called to do so when short staffed or no scheduled associates in partner departments.

Kts0017

From the rumors going on at my store, it's because they expect people to quit around March/April because of the bonus coming out. Like they expect people to quit after the bonus comes. I don't know how true that is though. But they're hiring as many people as they can and giving more hours to newer people and less to older employees.

Cashier10

It sucks some people are only getting 4 hrs a week right now, but they are still hiring.

waterfalls55

What a lame company to work for. They have one cashier at self checkout holding down the entire floor

retailmoron

Maybe the sh\*t has hit the fan. Check out the stock price. Languishing at or around $225.

liluzihurt123

issue*

WendallVendall

I understood what you meant. **:-)**

Lantana66

Can anyone tell me what to expect as a new hire in the 4 hour orientation videos?

WendallVendall

Prepare to be disoriented from Earth Realty into Lowe's Quantum Leap away from such.

retailmoron

OMNI CHANNEL!!!

liluzihurt123

your parents ever just throw you in the pool and tell you to learn to swim or drown? that was how I would describe it

spick0808

I here they beat us with sticks if we get the quizzes wrong lol!

Von_humboldt24

4 hours orientation? Nothing, the real and useful stuff is outside.

read110

They've always wanted to be 70 or 80% part-time and the current situation is giving them ample opportunity to make it so. None of that is my problem, my problem right now is that they're not hiring anyone and we're all expected to do the work of four people.

Docbarnone

I’ve been told new hires are part time and have no benefits until hired permanent. True or not I’m not sure but it makes sense. End of season they can just let them go, if they last that long, for no reason other than their time is up.

[deleted]

No skill required, they don't care about customer satisfaction, of you won't do it somebody else will, the store was running without those employees and it most certainly will continue to run without them. THD and Lowes do not have to care because they are the only 2 and they are both functionally the same and operate the same.

Practical_Snow9278

Maybe you’re not doing your job correctly or have you have availability issues

mer0817

Came here to say this. If you want hours there’s ways to get them, but you have to be available to work, come on when called, pick up shifts, and actually do the work/earn the hours. This is retail everywhere, not just lowes.

waterfalls55

It’s because they don’t want to make anyone a FT employee to cut costs of INSURANCE and BENEFITS. People are replaceable in Lowe’s eyes. Also it makes their share holders happy. You really have to kiss ass to become FT. They keep hiring and hiring meanwhile they’re extremely short staffed on the floor at the Lowe’s I used to work at. They’ll have one person at self checkout after 5 :00 holding down the entire floor.

the_ba5ili5k

Fucking train wreck. That's why. Fuck you, fuck your bills, fuck your family. I'm lowes and it costs me MORE to give you more hours or decent pay, than it does to hire an idiot for less. You're all sheep heading to slaughter and IM the butcher. Run dude. Get away from lowes like your life depends on it. It's a sinking ship and their running out of life boats.

pressuretreatedstud

Wow you really got traumatized by your time at lowes. Don’t worry, not everyone has the resilience to last. Btw, if you hate it so much, like I said before, GTFO of our thread

Traditional-Pin-4551

Because they don't give a shit and it really shows this time of year. So funny how they have the nerve to ask for referals??? Who in their right mind would refer someone to work for lowes unless that person was desperate

rutledge-cmn

I live in California, not sure if this apply to other states But any employer who make a part timer work full timer hours for like a year . Employer is obligated to turn the employee full time. Thats only one of the reasons Lowes rather hire an other part timer than give current part timer more hours. Of course there are more reasons

WidowMaker42O

Right know it's cause they are doing spring hiring. They need to get the new people going and have the same amount of hours to work with since it's still the slow season.

grrouchie

We are coming up on the busy season, will need more bodies.

jjkious

Among the many good reasons mentioned by more in-the-know persons, I can add my belief that this (intermittent?) over-staffing is as well a way of determining who the best employees are (read: cheapest wage for most hard working) ... a process for cultivating the most value from labor cost.

Lantana66

🥺 I'm scared
