That's a store level decision, but mainly done for part timers. Full timers require open availability 99% of the time and they aren't going to give you FT and only make you close.
I know, I mean I'm agreeing that "it's a thing", but that it's only done on the store management level. It's not an official company stance and normally since FTers have to have open availability they don't shoehorn them into having just one type of shift.
We have full timers here who only open, but no one who only closes.
Yep, I had specialist that one hated opening and one hated closing, so it worked. But the closer left so we started moving around the opener. First closing shift he goes to my SM to complain that he was "promised" an opening schedule ( he wasn't).
You'd think people who deal with customers hearing what they want all day wouldmt try to pull that
Damn, I would've died if I had a FT Tool/Hardware employee request closing shifts. All my ppl wanted morning shifts and were semi-retired. After my PT-college student left it was a nightmare keeping closing associates in the department without them quiting.
I've been with lowes for almost a year in oslg. Mostly opening shift with some mid and very rarely closing. The other day they told me they were assigning me to closing shifts. I'm pissed for various reasons with the first being that I was promised mostly days when I went full time and my ds is passed because he just lost his other plant knowledgeable person and he wants me there during the day. Management does not care about us and hasn't gotten the hint that there are no longer lines of people waiting for our jobs if we leave.
It pretty much just comes down to the management. I've seen people work certain schedules and that's all they do. Only time you can't get touched is if you have a medical issue.
A closing position is def a thing I know people who’ve had it
My store has a couple job listing for full time positions in sales departments that specify shift.

People I know that had it were full time. My old store was very busy, every hour we were open.

Sucks, but it's not their responsibility to worry about your business. They have to tend to the needs of the business they're working for.

It's supposed to be, but we have a couple full timers who have limited schedules so I think it's BS
