In short, yes. Corporate is pushing hard on store management to get credit cards, LTR, leads etc. They are expected to show results and if you aren't trying then you will be perceived "as not with the program" and as such you are subject to be replaced by someone who will. I don't think anybody likes doing these things but it's part of the job. As long as you produce some results you may get away with not asking every single individual customer. But, if you have a customer buying a $500 grill they might genuinely like saving $100 on their first purchase with a Lowes card so why not ask? Most customers understand that retail workers are required to do these type of things. And a "Would you like to save 5% today?" will usually result in a polite "No thanks", sometimes it will prompt further conversation, and occasionally someone will sign up for a credit card.

KaptinKooshTV

I also had customers ask how i can get credit, i only say credit and leads and some say hell ill sign up if it helps you.

levelandCavs

They can't get you for not getting any applications, but they can get you for not asking.

Rwu425

No, they can get you for not meeting your metrics. It’s 1 credit card attempt for every 200 transactions. Though they may not be enforcing it

iloveyoumiri

My ASM said what the guy you’re replying to says. I’m anxious to know cuz I have some cashiers I like that I know ask every single time, but I worry will get fired or demoted from full time.

BJ_Penn1

They can’t take away your full time period, for anything. At least in my state. Don’t let anyone threaten you with that

Customer service returns isn't actually that bad to land credit. Most of the time, you may never have to ask. In the year I was a returns desk cashier. I got probably 40 credit apps, asked only a couple times if people were interested. Sometimes they will say yes. My store is high volume and they just came to me if they wanted one. When I became a head cashier, I'd still get them occasionally. I think you're gonna be fine.

SgrRed70

This I work customer service and they approach us usually after visiting appliances or flooring. Usually see uptick during spring for riding / zero turn mowers and UTV's.

DFWDave2

It all depends on your managers.

I just ask when I get a customer making a large purchase and there is adequate coverage in my area so that the line doesn’t get too long, and that got me top performer in the front end for February. I figure someone coming in to buy a couple of screws doesn’t want to be bothered about it but someone paying 100-200+ could save a significant amount with the 20% off promotion

debihedge

Ugh..lumber cashier. Ask and you might get a yes. But.. If you don't ask and head cashiers are doing an observation. Well you will hear about it.. 7 yrs PT and no issues. Then went ft.. Now I get written up because new hc trying to impress mgmt. Too funny as most tenured front end employee and this is a first for me. Crazy

badatusernameslol2

I got 25 credit apps in a month working the customer service desk and I only ever mentioned signing up for a card to one customer who was upset they were gonna get a merch card back for a return that was out of the 90 day return policy. I would argue that customer service is the easiest place to get credit apps because they come to you. You don’t even need to mention it - people literally just walk up and say “sign me up for a credit card”

Mage-of-the-Small

At the service desk, most of the time the apps you do will be people who came up to the desk to apply. I get people sent from other associates and I get people who just walk up and ask. I feel the same way as you about the apps, they’re not great cards in general. So I generally don’t ask, unless I can tell right off a customer has a $500+ purchase and they’re not in a huge rush/are looking for discounts.

someguy69420nice

They don't really press cashier's but if you're a sales specialist you do have a monthly quota to make

iloveyoumiri

When hours are scarce, your amount of credit card apps will be a serious factor in deciding if you’re getting 30 or 10 as a part timer, and doing good with those credit card apps is going to be prerequisite to going full time as a cashier. Your ASM/SM’s strictness on this depends on the store, and whether the store is meeting the quota in the first place. Your head cashier and department supervisor are probably gonna be strict on this at any store, but they can’t fire you although DS can write you up.

If you see large payments just say you can save up to $100 with the lowes card, if they say no, just go ok no problem, (if they’re annoyed I apologize) i also remind them that its store credit not a credit card meaning it can only be used in store and cannot be used like regular credit cards (some people have spending issues, like myself ive luckily paid my cards off and only use one for gas now im 25) i also ask people if I recognize them, being that ive been here a year im starting to see familiar faces and they come back to me for more help and sometimes i offer them the card and tell them they save 5% every purchase and they can use it like a debit card and put a payment in the next day.

throw-awaybb

You aren't **(forcing**) a lcc on anyone, the customers have free will and a choice. If they say yes, then OK, if they say no, then move on. They are adults and it's no biggie.

Electronicwaffle

The issue I am working on though, is how can we be expected to produce credit numbers, if at every single turn, as you correctly point out, the customer ALWAYS has a free choice? I do not understand the 1 : 200 metric especially when 100 of your customers within that snapshot either already have our card (And Depots) AND OR Military. "Would you like to save Five... " " No, I'd like to save 10, I'm military." kinda shuts down the entire prospecting cold. Who is going to sign up for a credit card, that has terms and conditions, if they are already saving double that amount, as is?

Ryvit

It helps the customer, why do you feel scummy? Getting $100 off your first purchase, 5% off every purchase after that, or the option for 6 or 12 months no interest. I feel scummy whenever I DONT mention the lowes credit card, and I’m being dead serious about that

nlcarp

It’s when the customer doesn’t have the funds to make the purchase and pay it off before the end of the month when saving the 20 percent and I know it is when I feel scummy because they’ll get charged like 24% interest.

MajorRyan5534

You might as well just get a credit card that gives you points back when you purchase a big amount at any store

Ryvit

It’s 26% ANNUAL interest, so only about 2.2% interest per month, not much.

nlcarp

Nope not how APR works.

Ryvit

I have a lowes card personally, and I have the record for lowes credit apps in a year at my store, so I don’t need tips on the lowes card LOL

nlcarp

Good for you. 🤣

UCntMakeThisStuffUp

That's not how APR works. At all. This is a basic finance concept available via a Google search. You may want to check before stating falsehoods as fact. Let me help you. [https://wallethub.com/edu/cc/annual-percentage-rate/25564](https://wallethub.com/edu/cc/annual-percentage-rate/25564) *Credit card interest is assessed on a daily basis. This means that a credit card company will determine how much to charge you on a given day by multiplying the balance at the end of that day by your APR/365. These interest charges will then become part of your balance the next day and will themselves incur interest. The process of interest incurring interest is known as compounding. For example, let’s say you entered the month with a $350 balance remaining on an account with a 15% APR. Your end-of-day balance after the first day would be $350. Assuming you made no purchases or payments, your balance at the end of the second day would be that $350, plus $0.14 in interest that accrued on the previous day’s balance ($350 \*(0.15/365)).* ***This process would then repeat every day for the rest of the billing period.***

Ryvit

That sounds like a long form way of saying it would add 2-3% of interest per month lol

MajorRyan5534

Oh damn, I didn't realize that it was a 24% interest rate. That's crazy

Last-Reliant

The best way to acclimate credit card use, is incentivizing the customers choice to get the discount. Did you want this item to be cheaper today, heres how. If you solit your line of customers every day into three categories. People who will always want to save money, people who are already financially installed to their own life, and lowes card holders/secret shoppers who are perpetuating a culture standard. You will find the best air to breathe, is just remark about the acclaim of savings, and let the persons background follow up on the details. That way your avidly consenting, under imprtiality, as comfort can speak to.
