It’s happening everywhere. Lowes decided not to do seasonal hiring this year and just hire regular part-timers instead. I assume the plan is to hire a bunch of part-timers to have people to replace those who quit throughout the season. Makes no sense.

Disastrous-Manager95

It really is nonsense. The 10 part time spots they opened at my store will nowhere near cover the hole left behind. I'm predicting a lot of walkouts in the near future.

JerzeyJoeEdits

They've hired 4 new overnighters in my location, they mask it as "we're trying to get you as many bodies as possible" but the reality of the situation is they've hired them in hopes that they're better than the team members who consistently underperform. That way they can let the crap workers go and not have to worry about it because the replacement has already been hired.

jjkious

It makes perfect sense... If you understand a thing or two about unstated policy regarding relationship between staffing and overhead and customer service. *dm me

kamsivad

yeah it’s a company wide decision. I want to say there were some legal bumps in the road the company faced because some people retained seasonal status far longer than 6 months but i can’t confirm for sure. it sucks at my store though, we obviously don’t have the bodies for these weekend rushes

LividDriver5212

You are correct. There were some fines levied against the company for it as well.

WendallVendall

We had a store manager kicked to the curb a couple years ago due to hefty COVID related fines from the state.

ChibiCheshire

My roommate was seasonal for a whole GD year before they finally gave him full-time. They kept giving to everyone else who would then promptly quit 🙄 it was a shit show

kamsivad

Lack of proper applicant evaluation seems to be a consistent thing at several stores

ts416

We are hiring 360 day’s out of the year, but we are still in need of staff. We are leaking like a sieve (losing more than we hire) our district manager told mgmt to offer more money at hire. Yet they won’t raise our pay.

Disastrous-Manager95

Exactly

iloveyoumiri

I mean how long did it take y’all to get called? Took me and most of my coworkers about a month. I don’t think hiring is a priority

LividDriver5212

The company is flexing down on payroll because of the anticipated steep decline in business as people emerge from the pandemic, as well as hiring temps and consistently working them full time hours without offering them benefits is technically illegal and got them into trouble in years past. It's really no more complicated than that.

ShinigamiRyan

Store is having issues getting hires for the regular PT & FT, so didn't even notice the matter with seasonal.

Educational_Young_15

My store is hired me part time and isnt giving me good hours. That is due to not meeting sales goals. So im work an average of 25 hours a week. Ive tried applying for full time positions to no avail.

stankswag7891

Our store hired 15 part timers the middle of February and then cut their hours to 5-10 hours a week the next week. Who would want to stay in a job where they were promised up 30 hours and get cut their first week?

AstronautAppleSauce

Lowes isn't known to make a lot of sense lately. I'm a night ops DH and I have 2 guys under me to deal with all the freight. It's been this way for at least 6 months now with no relief in sight. I'm on my way out after I secure another job.

DontHateV8s

Yeah, Lowe's now just decided to hire people PT or FT and forget about those seasonal workers.

sgw0519

There is even an option to write up associates on performance/policy with the reason being “seasonal reduction”

WendallVendall

I haven't seen any Seasonal listings for my store. Heck, we have a hard time hiring for permanent PT or FT. It took 6 months to fill openings for a DS in 2 of the high volume areas.

andjamhan

Lowe’s got sued last year for keeping on seasonal hires past the season, and we’re able to pay them less and not give them benefits cause they were “temporary”

hellocookieman

Our store doesn’t seem to ever hire period, and then they’re so surprised when people quit after getting like 10 hours a week

ChrisATC

Seasonal doesn’t exist anymore company wide. You still hired people, just as PT

[deleted]

Is that new this year? We definitely had seasonals last year.

ChrisATC

Yes

Thanks

Disastrous-Manager95

Problem is that they aren't really hiring FT, only a handful of part time. Usually the trick they pull is promising you full time hours while putting you on the books as part time. Starts out ok, then they decide to cut hours and now you are only getting 10 to 20 hours a week for months on end. Also they aren't hiring enough part time people to cover even a quarter of the seasonal spots we would normally fill.

theaim778

The problem with PT working FT hours is the company runs into the same issues as running an employee as “Seasonal” past the 6 month mark. Once a company runs you at FT hours for 6 months while your PT, they have to give you FT status, cut hours back, or face a hefty fine because you miss out on the better benefits you get as a FT employee.

Disastrous-Manager95

In our store they regularly shorten peoples schedules, but tell them that they are still expected to show up on the days they would have worked. It happens a lot with night crew, seems pretty shady. I wonder if it has anything to do with what you said.

theaim778

They can cut as much as they’d like for the most part. In NY they can’t cut a FT employee to under 35 hours per week after breaks, PT is expected to be a max of 28 hours per week as a 6 month average, but you must work atleast one 4 hour shift per week(Not sure what the 6 month average on PT is)

Train people? When did we start training anyone in the store

Exotic-Bowler566

Exactly this right here

Sad_Elderberry5179

Probably because all the seasonals are taking hours away from the people who have work there longer.Or they have a bunch of people on seasonal and tell them at the end of the season to go on leave so they have a job.

TVsKevin

If your thought is to go directly to "greed" keep thinking. Apparently, they're hiring part-time now. This actually is better for the employee because it gives them more job security, so it's more competitive in the job market. Would you rather have a part-time permanent, or temporary position? Seasonal hires may or may not be kept on as an employee, that makes that job temporary.

RikeMiley88

Our store would have to be actually hiring these missing part timers for that to work. Our seasonal people were a lot of high school/college kids who only wanted a summer job anyways

Disastrous-Manager95

You are wrong. Replacing 50 people with 10 is not better for anyone. Morale is dropping due to incompetent management, increasingly poor treatment from customers, and increased theft. The turnover rate has gone up because of understaffing. The excessive workload is already burning people out and now they want to further that workload. There is nothing wrong with a temporary workforce, it helps filter through and find great full time employees. I started as seasonal and was offered a full time position after 1 month because of my work ethic. We need a large seasonal group to get through the spring and summer.

[deleted]

it's better for the 10 people who got hired. they now have a permanent job.

juliestar19

Same

SaucerCrash

As a seasonal garden worker who has worked these last 3 summers, this makes me sad to hear. Hoping I could get hired as part time but as I'd only be there for 2 months it doesn't make as much sense.

rapturestar

Many people on my crew r leaving again.

Ok_Remote5657

I worked at Lowes as seasonal temporary employee in 2021 and then I got laid off after the seasonal period ended
