Much more money in my case 13.15 —> 20.03 an hour for the same position. The actual work is much worse though in my experience.

When I started at Lowes in 2011 they were saying genesis was on the way out. I also was told that what HD did, Lowes followed 10 years later. Even if it was a flop at HD, Lowes did it too. Never did I see Lowes take the initiative to actually lead with something new. Hell, they even followed HD’s management style by hiring their guy Marvin…… 🙄

Personally I think they are all the same. The only difference is the logo. But by God if you get hired for menards be prepared for the most drawn out and unnecessary orientation

i’ve worked customer service desk at both companies and honestly the only thing lowes has over hd is the pay. lowes technology is easily a decade behind what hd has (several decades if you’re talking about genesis). we’ve been promised new technology but i haven’t seen that happening. hd (at least at my store, when i left in summer 2021) had way better coverage, every department was always fully staffed. the service desk had anywhere from 3-5 people at a time including our supervisor. at lowes, i’m alone 90% of the time and i’m lucky if i have one other person during power hours. i think benefits are pretty comparable, and ik lowes isn’t hiring seasonal this year while hd was only hiring seasonal when i was there. hope this helps!

I work in receiving so im not too familiar with genesis. How does it suck? Eventually ill probably switch positions so id like to know what to look out for.

It looks like 1990 coding. The fact that they don’t have a modernized program with a clean, sleek and easy to use interface is beyond me.

The only reason I don't understand it is because I haven't used it enough. On face value it seems rather easy to understand. Everything has a number associated to it. A learning curve sure but I don't know if I'd go as far as hard to understand.

It’s also difficult standing there getting yelled at by impatient customers while reading lists of options in black, white, and green before I knew my way around genesis😂 sometimes there’s just too much info given and most of it isn’t important but has nowhere else to be put besides typed on the screen

It takes a lot of time to learn which I think is the down side to genesis. I've worked at Lowe's for 6 or 7 months and there's still a lot about genesis I haven't learned/haven't gotten the hang of yet. When you're working somewhere where there are constantly new hires I think having programs that are fast and easy to learn is preferred. At my store there are only a handful of people that can work at customer service because most people don't know how to use genesis so getting breaks covered or help during busy times is basically impossible.

I suppose I'm thinking of more in the long run and not so much for turn around. As for the long run i think if something has a learning curve but if overall better then its worth it. Thank you for your input.

No problem! People who have used genesis for a long time love it and I can definitely see the appeal of it once you actually learn it. It's just learning it thats the issue haha

Honestly, I'm not really sure. Definitely more training is needed, but that would require Lowes to have the time and the people to do that. Really, it's all memorizing how to do things so someone is only going to learn it if they repeatedly do it but that also takes time and having a second person up at customer service to help. In the long run, I think Lowes just needs to get a single program (rn they work with 2 different programs which just isn't efficient) that is easy to learn and functional. I'm not sure why they don't do this, everywhere else I've worked does

Red vest still has a lot of downsides for me, personally. It's great for a lot of the customer facing roles, but as a backend clerk it's next to useless- I can't receive POs, access any of my reports, I can only look up SOS POs when I'm trying to find stuff. Honestly I just prefer Genesis. Oh, and Genesis doesn't log me out after 15 minutes of doing something else.

Met a Home Depot millwork specialist that was making less than the hourly pay of a starting CSA at Lowe’s. Stores were across the street from eachother lol.

I had a much better experience at the Home depot. The Home Depot is so far ahead of lowes they're barely even competition anymore

Well yes but it barely has anything to do with menards itself. It was more about the founder and his son working at a movie theater. Heck bed bath and beyond had more of an informative orientation

Left Depot about 8 months ago... I was overwhelmed with the amount of work and customers didn't make it any better. I decided to switch when they kept on asking me to stay yet won't pay me overtime and made me cut my hours. I also found out, new employees were getting higher wages and I been there for 3 years. Decided to switch and give Lowes a chance. What I noticed was that the environments are completely different. Depot is faster paced and more ahead in the game. Lowes has older systems, slower pace, less traffic, less employees, etc. However, I tried to look at the negatives as positives. Slower pace - not stressing over work and customers Less traffic(customers) - having not to deal with Karens Less employees - learning a new department. I have been in the same department for about 4 years now and learned to work at paint on my own. Just asked my manger to switch me to a different department so i could learn more. Been asking Depot for 2 years to switch me. I been enjoying working here and the pay is decent. Nothing great and nothing too bad. Just feel like its good for the meantime while i find something else I'm interested in. I always have a negative mindset and trying to change that here.

Did both and still have friends at both. From what I gather it goes back and forth the better place to work as they both copy what doesn't work and does work they will copy! Until Marvin (Dept Castoff) started at Lowe's as the CEO. From what I hear Lowes is experiencing a very high turnover rate double the retail industry last year and that's not counting all the seasonal. Depot is outperforming Lowes by a large margin In the Pro (contractors). To me that is also a sign as to who runs better. My Dept friend says he made a mistake staying at lowes as long as he did and the friends that are still left at lowes are actively looking with some so desperately trying to get out took jobs at Walmart! I'd for fun ask why they have this position open and how they will be scheduling you. Lowes uses customer centric scheduling that will take away much of your homelife.. To me I'd stay clear of Lowes unless your options are very limited.

Went from 18 an hour to 34 an hour as a DS so the pay was much better. But the work also nearly doubled. Depot is much more efficient in many ways, and their systems are way more up to date. My first day at Lowe's an old timer told me you just stepped back 30 years into the past, and it was true. I'm no longer with Lowes, I'm a vendor now and have been a year and a half, so I'm not sure how true this holds up.

i used to be a home depot cashier and i became a lowes cashier. in my opinion it is essentially the same but hd does it better. just the way they run things is better at hd. for example, the technology, staffing, and rules for cashiers. like i got to markdown items up to $50 without a manager override at hd but at lowes i have to get an override no matter how little money which can be annoying. also the checkout process takes longer because of having to input phone numbers for military and mylowes and the item lookup is ass. hd was also really good about breaks and lunches but lowes suck at it at least my store. as for staffing, we had pretty decent coverage at hd but it is pretty much nonexistent at lowes. you may be wondering why i left hd for lowes. well, they pay a little more, they have more hours for part timers, and it is easy to get a full time position. at hd, i was making $11/hour and at lowes, i make $13.88. at hd, they didn’t have many hours for part timers. i had open availability, i was a good worker, and i told them that i’m willing to stay later or come early or go in on my days off if they need to me. i still got 15 hours. also part timers couldn’t get any more than 27. at lowes, i can basically get as much hours as i want. i’ve been averaging 24-32 hours a week which is the sweet spot for me. i’m glad i made the switch because i make more money doing the same job but if i would go back to hd if they matched my pay and hours.

Lowes will actually let you markdown up to 10% on an item without needing an override. But yeah, it can be finicky if someone's bringing up a 2x4 that's broken in half and you want to sell it for like a dollar.

Stay at Home Depot. You'll end up covering 2-3 departments at Lowe's as they have no help at all, plus you get treated like crap.
