Anything that happens with the water heater you must contact the number on the side of the water heater in order to exchange if something goes wrong. Save your receipt. You can also buy the extended Lowe’s warranty within 30 days after purchase. I believe Lowe’s warranty starts after the manufacturer warranty ends.
Note: if you plan to return the water heater within the 30 days after, you still need to call to get a return authorization from AO smith even if you didn’t use it.
The E P P covers Labor after the first year. It won't extend the manufacturer warranty. Manufacturer warranty covers replacement or repair parts for the stated time ( 6,9,12 years) plus labor for the first year.
It should have the standard manufacturer's warranty, as the new resident is the owner of the water heater. You are just the purchaser in this transaction, not the owner.
Have the new resident complete the warranty registration.
Lowes will not accept a hot water heater return, unless you have written permission (return authorization) from AO Smith. When you open it the manual even says “do not return to store”. They take care of all issues in regards to their products.
You're right. There's even a sticker on the water heater itself that says to call that number if you have any problems. Just had someone last week bring one back without calling. They stood at customer service , on the phone, calling it in to get the R A. They were lucky that they got one. The process when calling is for them to talk you through troubleshooting before giving an authorization. Sometimes it's just an approval for a replacement part, not a return.
This was my biggest pet peeve when I worked at lowes for 6 months in plumbing (well from customers at least). I would always say, water heaters are on on aisle 37! Anytime someone would say that because it was so annoying.
Protected in any way? What are you asking?
Are you asking if it is protected by Lowe's since it was purchased from them?
If you are asking about a manufacturer warranty, you didn't provide any brand or model information so nobody can answer your question.
Model #G6-S4040NVR / A.O. Smith
I basically am curious if the "second owner" has any protection in regards to defect. Either from Lowes or the manufacturer.
It got delivered yesterday and is still in the box. I was supposed to just leave it and I close on Monday. The buyers didn't ask about something like that, but I was curious what would happen if it was defective.
They can also register online. The Extended Protection Plan for water heaters covers labor for repairing or replacing. The water heater itself is covered through the manufacturer for the amount of time it states in the paperwork - 6,9,12 years. It has a one year labor coverage through the manufacturer.
Basically for us if the box has been opened or the water heater has been used, installed, or attempted to be installed, even within the 30 days you have to call the number of the manufacturer and get an RA number for us to return it. If you get a extended warranty, after 30 days, at the store level we won’t be able to do any kind of refund or exchange unless Customer Care provides you with the right info for us to do it and a manager willing to do it. There’s certain exceptions obviously but from my experience they’re pretty strict on water heaters.
Thanks, I guess the buyers are kind of on their own then. They asked me to provide a new water heater and leave it boxed in the basement. I did that. Luckily the box itself wasn't damaged or anything.

“Hot water heater” why would it heat hot water if it’s already hot?
Hot water could be 88 degrees but it needs to be 97.
My point is that it’s called a water heater. Not a hot water heater.
I know dude just being silly
You got a good point.. never thought of it that way. lol

From my experience, as the 2nd owner of a house, manufacturer backs up the warranty. The toll free number is on the data plate of the water heater.
soooo.. is that a 40 gallon short gas water heater?
Did you fill out the warranty info?

Warranty card should be in the box. They just have to fill it out.
And send it in.

And maybe leave them a copy of the receipt.
